Welcome to the sermon podcast for Watermark College, the college ministry at Watermark Community Church. We help 18-22-year-olds follow Jesus together.
Community [the committed fellowship of God’s people] is not a new invention or church program; it is God’s eternal design for flourishing. Our faith in God is personal, but it is never meant to be private. One of God’s greatest provisions and tools for transformation into Christlikeness comes from Christians living authentic and committed lives together. In this message, Graham will discuss how we are created for community, changed through community, and we must commit to community.
Identity is the internal operating system that controls your external activity. Your belief of what defines and provides your significance, value, and purpose will influence what you do and who you become. The world’s lie is that you achieve your identity, but God’s truth is that in Christ, you receive your identity. In this message, Graham walks through Ephesians 1:3-14 to show 3 aspects of our identity in Christ - we are chosen by God, redeemed by the Son, and sealed by the Spirit. If you believe, receive, and respond to this identity, it will change everything.
1 Timothy 3:14-15 lays out the purpose for Paul writing this letter to the early church: "I hope to come to you soon, but I am writing these things to you so that, if I delay, you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, a pillar and buttress of the truth." As we hop into 1 Timothy 3, we will look at the roles and requirements of church leadership and how we should respond to it.

In this series, we are going to study the eternal character of God. The Bible says that “Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” That he has eternally existed and has always been God. But he’s not just God over the past, present, and future, but He’s God over your past, present, and future. And the only way that you’re past, present or future is going to look different tomorrow than today is because of God.

The Great Commission is simple, we are saved by Jesus and we are sent by Jesus. God, in love, saves us by his gracious authority, then God, in love, sends us out to spread the word. In this message we're going to focus on the promise Jesus leaves us with in verse 20, "And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age." This tells us that when God sends us, he doesn’t send us alone. He sends us not to work for him, but to work with him on mission.
Some of us see Christianity and God the same way. We’ve trusted in God, we’ve joined team Jesus, but we have this impression that life starts in heaven, and for whatever reason we’re just chillin on earth waiting for heaven to happen in some future. However, the reason God left us hear isn’t because you’re on a waitlist, it's because he has invited us into a mission that is still taking place, that he is still accomplishing, that he wants to include us in.
In Matthew 28:18-20, Jesus utters what most of us know is called the Great Commission, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age". Through this series we hope to highlight the two promises and one command Jesus makes in this passage. Our prayer is that college-aged adults will feel empowered to live out Jesus' words and Full Send on The Great Commission.
We hear plenty about the ways that God remains near and present and real even in our darkest days, and that is the Truth. But in this message, we focus on one of the most fundamental ways God cares and provides for us, through His people. He gives us one another, that we would never have to walk alone as we love and serve and comfort one another. Tune in as Daniel walks us through three ways we can comfort and care for those who are hurting.
The Bible (and our world) is full of people disappointed in God, asking questions like, "Where are you God?" & "What good are you actually doing?" Tune in as Graham seeks to help us make sense of life when it simply doesn't make sense by walking through a conversation between Jesus and John the Baptist.
How do I know if I truly know the meaning of Christmas? Listen in as we look at the story of Christmas and 3 responses to the birth of Christ. Our hope is that students can use these 3 responses as a self-diagnostic, a held up x-ray, to where their heart lies and compare that to where God wants it to be.
Anxiety – "a feeling of worry, nervousness, or unease, typically about an imminent event or something with an uncertain outcome.” In this message, we walk through 1 Peter 5:5-7 to see how Peter helps us see that anxiety is a symptom or a byproduct of another source, and that source is pride. Listen in to see how battling pride in your life can help you fight anxious thoughts.
When thoughts and feelings of insecurity are a driving force in our life, life is marked by worry, striving, anxiety and despair. When we are secure, life is marked by freedom, peace and joy. In this message, we examine three faulty beliefs that lead to toxic, insecure thoughts, how to identify them, and the truth about God that equips us to confront and correct them.
2 Corinthians 10:3-4 – For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. You’re not wrong for the thoughts that enter your mind, but you are responsible for how you deal with them. God has not left you alone in this battle, in this message, Graham will help us see how we can fight this battle.
After listening to this sermon, our hope is that students will find comfort in the fact that their sin isn’t too big for Jesus. They’ll be reminded that the same grace and mercy available to them at the cross and point of conversion is increasingly available to them every day of their life.
What we believe about ourselves will determine how we live and what we do. And when we believe a lie, it will be costly or deadly. Jacob walks us through the story of the woman at the well and reminds us how Jesus brings us freedom, and that freedom enables us to live in authenticity.
Jesus came to bring abundant joy to the world. In this message, Graham helps us see 3 ways Jesus came to bring it and 3 ways we can practically experience it.
As we closed our series, When I Grow Up, we focused on the last piece of our mission, My Purpose. God doesn't want you to wonder why you're alive or what you're alive for. Nor does God want you to waste your life. My Purpose is to know God and make Him known.
Graham continues our series When I Grow Up by reminding us that God made us to belong and if we allow him to shape and satisfy that desire, we’ll be able to navigate the changes and disappointments of the world with confidence and security. The focus is that your place is being God's child in God's family.
We’re beginning a series “When I Grow Up”, and when you personally envision your future and whatever “growing up”, regardless of what comes to your mind – the job you have, place you live, car you drive, person you’re married to – one of the fundamental questions you are answering in your mental fantasy is who are my people? Who are my friends? Who do I run with?

Life is hard. Life hurts. By young adulthood, many of us are left scared from, scarred by, and ashamed of our pasts. Oftentimes, many of us doubt that God can use a broken person like us. Thankfully, God can redeem all things. In the last week of our Defined series, Cooper Wagner shares the testimony of Paul, a persecutor of the church who went on to become its champion.
Positions can often seem like the most important thing in the world. To protect our hearts from the pride of positions, we must always pause and ask ourselves this simple question: is faithfulness having a favored position tomorrow, or walking in what God has put in front of you today? Jacob Alger, in Week 3 of Defined, teaches through the story of Korah and his prideful rebellion against God and his people, spurred on discontentment with his position.

We are all met with a choice – let insecurity imprison us, or rejoice in the fact that God wants to use weak people. Heading into a new year we have new opportunities to make resolutions. In this one off message we look at the character of Daniel and the resolutions he made to live a fully devoted life.

For an entire semester, we've covered the war raging between culture and the cross. If you've followed along, you've heard a consistent Biblical perspective on the hot button issues of our day. To help explain the practical ways we can live out these Biblical convictions, we're joined by a gifted panel of church leaders – Derek Mathews (Director of Teaching Ministries @ CityBridge Community Church), Jermaine Harrison (Shoreline Director), and Kara Stanley (Fellow @ the Life Initiative).
