Jazz aficionados welcome the dawning of the next generations of talented musicians who boldly stride into progressive territory. Among the most important young jazz stars in that vein is vibraphonist Warren Wolf, who delivers his remarkable sophomore album, Wolfgang, on Mack Avenue Records. Wolf, a multi-instrumentalist who has also honed his chops on drums and piano since age three, is also following in the footsteps of vibes masters Bobby Hutcherson and Stefon Harris by becoming a member of the SFJazz Collective (both of whom precede him in the vibes chair).
Wolfgang, set for an August 20 release, features two different three-man rhythm sections (pianist Benny Green, bassist Christian McBride and drummer Lewis Nash; and pianist Aaron Goldberg, bassist Kris Funn and drummer Billy Williams, Jr.), as well as two noteworthy duo pieces with pianist/label-mate Aaron Diehl. Rob has shared the stage with the likes of legendary producer Phil Ramone, Tower of Power founding member Greg Adams, two time Grammy winners Paul Brown and Liberty Silver, guitarist Peter White, and 4-time Grammy award winning saxophonist David Sanborn. Rob has also opened for legendary guitarist/singer Jose Feliciano.

The early age of six, while traveling the world as an Air Forcebrat, David Bach began to recognize and work toward his futurecalling. Stopovers all around the world served to widen his appreciation for diverse styles of music. Bach has toured Europe as keyboardist for RCA/BMG recording artist FISHBELLY BLACK. It gave him opportunity to play live dates in London, Rome, and Paris, as well as cities in Germany, Switzerland, and Sicily. Gonzalo Rubalcaba is a jazz pianist. A prolific virtuoso and composer, he fuses Cuban and American influences into a powerful and innovative hybrid. Known for his stupefying and unbridled command of the keyboard throughout the 90s, his recent work has shown broader range. Few jazz pianists are better equipped to deliver a breathtaking solo recital than Havana-born Gonzalo Rubalcaba. The conservatory-trained master has integrated huge swaths of the European classical and jazz traditions, while maintaining bone-deep ties to the rhythmic currents of Cuba. Rubalcaba quickly gained fame on the American scene in the early ‘90s through the efforts of famed bassist Charlie Haden, who was blown away by the young virtuoso. Creatively, everything the pianist touches turns to gold. He’s earned 15 Grammy nominations and won two Grammy Awards for his ravishing collaborations with Haden on Verve, Nocturne and Land of the Sun, and two Latin Grammy Awards for Solo and Supernova (both on Blue Note). Solo piano is the ideal setting for the maestro’s exquisite touch, which you can hear on his sublime new album, Fé (Faith), as well as some of his much-anticipated music from his upcoming release

It was certainly written in the stars that Gretchen Parlato would enjoy the uber respect of a music career. Her Dad, Dave, was bass player for Frank Zappa for a time - Frank didn't tolerate mediocrity. And Grandfather Charlie Parlato was the trumpet player for Kay Kyser...'s big band. He was also player and vocalist for Tennessee Ernie Ford and Lawrence Welk. It's in the genes, this talent!
So, here she is, with her third highly acclaimed project - "The Lost and Found" - and it's still WAY early in her career - but our guest on Monday has already received more accolades that most twice her 35 years. In 2001, she was accepted into the Thelonius Monk Institute. On the board deciding: Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter and Terence Blanchard. She arrives in New York in 2003 - by the next year, she had WON the Monk Institute Jazz Vocal Competition at the Kennedy Center! Yes, that degree at UCLA in Ethnomusicology paid off, but it's the "chops", Baby, that stand the test :)

Acclaimed pianist Keiko matsui took a break from recording after her 2007 release “Moyo” but she has been out there sharing her incredible sound with fans all over the world. She has now returned with “The Road…” on Shanachie Records. This is an incredible work with spiritual and passionate harmonies that have come out of Matsui’s embracing a new journey. She has worked with everyone from Kirk Whalum, Bob James, Hugh Masekala... and Richard Bona during her 24 year career and has been playing the piano since she was 5 years old. Giving back is important for this Tokyo native who was a part of the recording to support the Japan relief effort after the devastating tsunami with the “Jazz for Japan.” She has also been selfless in her efforts to support breast cancer awareness by performing benefits for the and Susan G. Komen Foundations as well as releasing a 4 song CD entitled Á Gift Of Hope” that benefited the Y-Me Breast Cancer Organization. Just this month her 4 Hand Piano Project with Bob James entitled "Altair & Vega" was released. A little girl had a dream that she would be a drummer like her Grandfather, Matt Carrington, who played for Fats Waller and Chuck Berry. When she was given drums at the age of 7, she never looked back.
Flash forward... to a long and amazing career that has included touring and/or performing with Dizzy Gillespie, Herbie Hancock, David Sanborn, Al Jarreau, Stan Getz, the Yellowjackets, Joe Sample, Wayne Shorter (just this Summer) and so many other top-of-mind Jazz, etc. artists. Oh, and the house drummer for the Arsenio Hall TV Show, as well as - well, it's mindblowing.

She had been enduring some challenging news about both her Grandmother and Mom (her best friend). She also had severed a romantic relationship. Processing all of that and channeling emotion into "Unscripted" was a gift. Not only for Michael and Cindy as a work of art, but to those who are about to hear the depth of Jazz that is inside Cindy Bradley -Trumpet and flugelhorn artist with guts and history.

For 35 years, he has created... music for documentaries, animated films, dance and theater. Luis has been a producer, arranger or percussionist for Airto Moreira, Flora Purim, Etta James, Jim Messina and more.
In 1980, he was commissioned to write and record "Costa Rica" for his homeland. Luis donated all proceeds to the Red Cross of Nicaragua, a country trying then to fight back from the devastating effects of Civil War.
There is a body of work that Luis Munoz has created that has captured interest all over the world - for the breathtaking creativity and courage that each project has produced.

Mike Manson is the kind of guest that we love on "Cool Jazz Conversations." That combination of sweet story and selfless attitude gets us every time!A believer in education, Mike got his Masters in Music Performance at Northwestern University. 1995, he met Steve Finkle who become Steve Cole. Steve was playing with Brian Culbertson and introductions were made. Mike was doing the Chicago circuit now, and he was asked to contribute to Brian's "After Hours" CD in the mid-90's. She also was privileged to study under the Washington Opera's mezzo sorprano, Linda Allison.
She has shared the stage with The Whispers, Patti LaBelle, Luther Vandross, Arturo Sandoval and many more.
Mycah is the head of The Roux Project, a band that combines the best of Jazz, Soul and Blues - flavored with the buttered sweetness of Mycah's Creole roots. Her acclaimed CD, "Roux's Fantasy", has been played in both the U.S. and overseas. Kerensa Gray's CD, "Let Me Be Me" features the talents of Baltimore-based and now internationally known, contemporary Jazz guitarist Drew Davidsen. Kerensa and Drew have been collaborators on more than one project, and Drew will produce Kerensa's new CD, with an approximate release date that she will reveal on our show come Monday!

Nils Jiptner wrote the popular tutorial, "How to Make Your Guitar Talk." This German-born master picker has been doing just that since his teens. When he moved to L.A. in the mid-80's, that talking guitar got new legs. Nils got a position at the legendary Valley Arts Music Store - as a teacher. Word on the street grew that this cat was the real deal...composing, a...rranging, and producing at his secluded home studio, there was nothing that Nils couldn't do. Ask George Benson, who worked with him in the 90's. Or the Temptations, whose 1998 "Phoenix Rising" went platinum - thanks in part to the contributions of Nils. "Pacific Coast Highway" - in 2005 - was huge in the Smooth Jazz world. # 1 for 7 weeks, the title track was a whole 'nother story. The Nielson Company's broadcast data subsidiary reports that it got the most spins of any SJ track over ten years - more than 30,000! But we know that there is more to Nils than one label. His film and TV credits include production for the film, "Beyond the Ring" - music editing for the hit show, "Weeds" - music scoring for the Independent Spirit Awards - and more. He also fuels his passion for European Electronica with his alter ego, String Theory. "What the Funk" is the fourth Jazz-oriented project for Nils that also explores his love of R & B and Rock - flavors to create one potently energized Jazz-infused stew :)
