Do you ever get weak, or fall off? Do you ever feel the shame of drawing away from God during the hard times of life? The disciples of Jesus experienced this same thing, and Jesus shows us His own weakness and His response in His weakness. There is a lot for us to chew on. Here. We will each respond to the question, “Who is this?” When we are faced with Jesus. And, even after we’ve answered this question unequivocally, we can still turn on a dime and refute our first claim with the same passion and certainty. So, we encourage you to join us in evaluating your life to determine if and where you have idols in your heart making it impossible for you to clearly see, and truly know God and Christ His Son.

The smell of a hot fresh baked loaf of bread is one of the best smells I know. In this Psalm another type of bread is described - the bread of anxious work, and it’s not very go0d. God is a good father whose desire is for His children to rest in His provision and protection, and to intentionally stay in that best of safe spaces.

What we teach is important. But so too is how we teach what we teach. Solomon illustrates this just before closing his lesson on living, and helps us to see how graciously God meets us where we are to bring us to a better place by preparing His lessons for us such that they entice and satisfy our longings.

The Psalmist pulls back the curtains here so that we can see behind the scenes on what happens when God’s protection is removed from the land and His people. There is a stark warning and reminder for all of God’s people here for those with the humility to receive it.

Here in Ecclesiastes 12:1 - 8, the preacher moves to his conclusion - his closing argument before dropping the mic. He takes pain to paint a picture of terror and hopelessness and futility. We believe that he does this to invite us to continue wrestling with the question, “What is the true purpose of life?”. Because, in truly wrestling deeply we will come to see the insufficiency of our own power and knowledge, and may reach out and find the hand of God ready to catch us.

Next up: delivery. Why, because we so often are in dire need of being delivered. As the people of God approach His temple with joy, we are absolutely brought face to face with the fact of our weakness and inability to depend on ourselves. This leaves us either ready to fall down before, and into God’s hands, or to turn our backs on Him.

God does not grade on the curve, He grades on the cross. In this last section of Ecclesiastes 11 we hear the preacher starting to wrap up his sermon. On the one hand, we have desires which God has given to us to be fulfilled, as a blessing to us. But He alone will judge if we have gone outside of His boundaries as we life. Yet, our hope is not in living by our own strength within His boundaries, but in the fact that Jesus did for us.

Here in Ecclesiastes 11:1- 4, we are called and encouraged to continue investing even though we investment comes with risk. The preacher points us to the fact that the illusion of control is cruel on the front and the back end - on the front end it blinds us to the real risk that we face, and on the back end it forces us to choose between fear futility or fight. But God’s way is the way of relationship and love.

Being 1 degree off is the difference between landing on the moon, or floating off into space never to return. There are a lot of things which ought not to happen, and many of them are signified by only very small tells. It is then the work of wisdom to watch for those small errors which result in colossal terrors.

Life in God is most often about good, right relationships. Here in Ecclesiastes 9:7 - 10 Solomon points to four areas of life that are given to us to be satisfied in; eating, pleasures of goods, marriage and work. But in our modern context, does his admonition lead us into self centered entitlement and not towards deeper relationship with God. We’ll explore that question here today.

There is a precious peace that can only be found in the comfort of the protection of God. A comfort that satisfies our deepest longings and needs. The living don’t have it any better than the dead, and rain falls on the evil and the good. Even so, there is a double sided good life that God has granted to us. Ecclesiastes 9_1-6 tell us that,first, we are in His hands. Second, he has granted to us relationships which carry forward into, and echo back from eternity.

Whatever we look to to make us happy, satisfied and content has the potential to leave us unsatisfied. So many of us make idols out of the things that we look to for satisfaction, But God alone can satisfy us.

God is inscrutable. This means that He and His ways are beyond finding out. That is, it does not take a lot of work and wisdom to find them out - rather, regardless of how much work and wisdom you bring to the task, you still won’t get close. So, Solomon gives us a surprising recommendation. Try enjoying the good things God has given you today.

What are you afraid of? The Psalmist puts it this way when he asks, “What ails you oh mountains?” The question that confronts us is how will we respond to God. He answers that by indicating that fear of God is the only first response.

So much of life is unfair, and leans heavily towards the absurd. Good healthy people die tragically young while old murderers live out their long lives in the lap of wickedness and luxury. So here in Ecclesiastes 8:10 - 13 Solomon warns us against looking for fast justice and reminds us to press into a good and holy and righteous God who will cause justice to triumph.

There are so many incredible reasons to gif God praise. In Psalm 113 one of the most amazing reasons Is just how far down God has condescended to not just look at us, but also to lift us to his realm and to grant us His eternal gifts.

Here in Ecclesiastes 8:1-9 Solomon gives a very bsic instruction for living wisely - Obey the King. It is arguable that this instruction was even harder for contemporary readers of this passage than it is even for me today in America in 2024. There are laws that are written, and there are rules that are unwritten, and there are politics and power, and that means that there is the ever-present possibility of being bumped off. Yet, Solomon points us to this crucial fact. God has made oaths to the king, which He Himself will uphold. So we ought to walk wisely before our rulers.

When we think about what is important, living righteously is generally not top of mind for most people. We surround ourselves with so many behaviors and actions that will build a monument to our greatness, Yes in this Psalm (112) we are first shown that righteousness is needed to be remembered, and then we are comforted that there is a righteousness that stands on our behalf.

How does a guy say that there is no man on earth who is righteous, and then say that one man in a thousand is righteous and wise, and then point out that that man is not him? It happens when a man stops pursuing God and tries to fill his unsatisfied heart with wives, and then finds himself completely trapped. The mysterious nature of GOd is clearly seen in the fact of our daily experience that He is not fair. The fool and evil person outlive the wise and good people, and this reality smacks us as being a cruel and deplorable plot twist. But Solomon gently and skillfully continues to lead us here in Ecclesiastes 7:14 - 19 to see that the one thing we can base our lives on is that God is a good creator and father who has called us to walk in fear and relationship with Him.

In this passage the holy power of God is declared with such vividness as He lays out the coming judgment and destruction for the enemies of God and of His anointed King that we are left with only one response _ Be reconciled to the Son before His anger is kindled. Does life ever seem to be a snow globe filled with submarine mines being shaken up by a drunk toddler? May that’s just me… And maybe I’ve already told you more about me than I should. Oh well. In Ecclesiastes 7:1 - 13 Solomon points out that this picture is not too far off, except that God is the one who has made the straight things crooked. So, that is the point of trying to live out a good purpose in your life? Well, Solomon’s answer there is that there still is a point. In other words, even though this passage seems to point to absurdity and hihilism as the only answer, there is a true answer tat is the source and foundation for the true meaning of life - and i’ts worth finding and holding onto.

Jesus told the disciples that it is not what goes into ones mouth that makes one dirty, but what comes out of the mouth. This Psalm gives us a master class on cursing and shows us just how far the heart that seeks to not bless will go. It stands as a warning to us to watch our hearts, and a reminder of the blessing that we have received from the mouth of God. Let us walk in that same manner.

Living in the present requires that we maintain an eternal perspective. If we do not - if instead we live with our eyes focus on the here and now, then we will live a life doomed to meaninglessness and frustration. In Ecclesiastes 6:10 - 12 the preacher reminds us of the need and value of rightly evaluating the length of our life and the depth of our impact so that we spend our energy and time in a fruitful and productive endeavor.

When we recognize that without God we cannot win, we can overlook the basic question of, “Wait, has God actually come with us?” If God is not with us, why not. Are we trusting in our own plans and forfeiting the work that God is performing on our behalf? God is a God of victory who saves us out of His greatness so that our praise would rightly flow back out towards Him.

Work work work work work. No matter how much we labor our appetites will never be satisfied. So, the life spent on working to satiate our desires is a life that will be constantly unsatisfied and depressing and empty. God has given us good things to enjoy now in the middle of relationships as we enjoy the labor of our hands for our good and for the good of others. God, in His kindness, has blessed us with the call to live in the present and to look to Him for our future.

When the Redeemed of the Lord say so, they are saying that the steadfast love of God is seen in the salvation that we have experienced in spite of our stumbling in sin. We are invited to reflect on the cycle of our rejection of God, our falling into sorrow, an then our calling to God and His hearing and saving us.

How do you find meaning in the midst of a never-ending treadmill life? We strive to do well and share life in so many good ways, yet, even in what is being shared, everything is ultimately fleeting and soon to pass away. This drives us to pursue the question, is my life worth any value? Another way to ask this is to ask how many people will miss us when we’re gone. Yet this will often lead to depression, and to missing the relationships around us, and more importantly, relationship with God that is the good that gives life value.

The goodness of God can be a difficult concept to define. In this passage the Psalmist makes it abundantly clear that the goodness of God is very clearly defined by the depth, wretchedness and constancy of our sin. This passage calls us to look back on our lack of faithfulness and to respond out of overwhelming gratitude to God’s steadfast love.

He who dies - still dies. This is the message that the Preacher is giving here in Ecclesiastes 5:13 - 20. The work that we do, and the labor that we avoid are both equally trying to lasso the clouds. And when we are done, regardless of how much success we have attained, the grave welcomes us all with open arms. The Preacher puts this warning in front of us as he continues to help us consider, why are we here?

Money is not the root of all evil, And it’s also not the answer to the problem of evil, or practically any other problems either. In fact, in this warning the Preacher takes the time to lament just how futile amassing, storing and spending wealth is, and how powerless it is to achieve the happy life.

God loves you. but He is not your buddy. It has become easier and easier for us to view God through the lense of friendship - which is a great thing as He is the truest friend we will ever have. At the same time, Ecclesiastes 5: 1 - 7 warns us that He is not like us. He is not on the same level as we are, He is so much above us, in every way, that the only rational response to knowing Him is a response of humble gratitude. Not exactly the number 1 attribute in our society.

This deep extended passage on sorrow is a fertile landscape where the seed of faith dies, is buried and can bear fruit of hope. Psalm 102 points out to us the very human factor of living in and through sorrow. Yet, it also points the listener to look up to see the eternal power of a sovereign and loving God who is bent towards us in our lowest hours.

A love for righteousness forces a decision between radical religious fanaticism, or humble grace-based gratitude. It is helpful to consider the perspective of the speaker. On the one hand, it could be a holy God revealing His posture towards the activity of the wicked. On the other hand it could be the posture of a man who is setting his priorities and actions towards holy living. In either perspective the bar is stupidly high and impossible to get over. Accepting the reality of our depth of sinful fallenness is the beginning to be able to receive the righteousnesss of the only man who ever lived in complete integrity.

Obeying GOd requires fundamental change as his nature chalenges ours. God draws us to obedience through love and grace, not guilt and shame. Recognizing God’s grace despite our failure should produce gratitude and in turn, love and obedience.

In Ecclsiastes 3: 1 - 8 we are again presented with the cyclical nature of life, and therefore the meaninglessness. Yet, we are also given a bit of hope as the preacher goes a little further in in his pondering. Even though the wheel of time rolls on, there are times for everything that happens in life. This gives us an assurance that even when the outlook is worse than bleak, there is still another season waiting to arrive.

Ecclesiastes 2:18 - 26 tells us that All effort is vanity apart from finding purpose and joy in one's labor as from God.Leaving a godly legacy is crucial to a well lived life, but God alone decides an inheritance's recipient. Christ offers hope as the true heir walking in wisdom under the Father's care.
Our hope is in Christ, who received all things from God and grants His followers a sure inheritance through faithful obedience.

In Psalm 96, the Psalmist paints a vivid image of all creation - heavens, earth, seas, fields, trees - worshipping God continuously He demonstrates in this that we are called to bless God's name and proclaim His goodness always God alone is worthy of this praise and worship because of His righteousness, power, and majesty

In Ecclesiastes 2: 12 - 17 the preacher continues to describe the benefits and limits of pursuing wisdom. He has some surprising words for us. You might think that the wisest man who ever lived, and who adjured his children oner and over again to seek wisdom and find and keep it, might put the highest premium on the value of wisdom. But then, you might be surprised by what Solomon says about the result of gaining wisdom.

Saying a genuine 'thank you' does not take a great effort, and yet, for most people gratitude does not come easily. In cases where we have received both a little or a lot, and when we've been tremendously blessed - a feeling of awkwardness, and vulnerability often accompanies our impulse to day thank you.

We're looking ta Ecclesiastes chapter 2 today and we're going to focus in on verses 1 - 11 for this Monday.
Living a life focused on either experiencing pleasure or on building your brand is deceptively alluring. In a YouTube and Tick Tock world the promise of pursuing your pleasures and gaining your fame is that you'll know you've arrived because you'll just be so darn happy and filled up with satisfaction.
But the Preacher has a bit of pro-advice. As one who gave himself over completely to pursuing every pleasure that he would find, he has some reflections to try and help us not waste time on empty promises and smoke screen illusions.

Let's discuss Psalm 94, where the psalmist expresses frustration with wicked rulers and their injustice, but finds solace in God's protection and assurance that justice will be served.
God is the ultimate judge. Because this is true when we are being disciplined by God it is a blessing that leads to growth and a closer relationship with Him. Trusting in God's plan and being obedient to Him, even in the midst of tribulations, is the key to growing in our relationship with our Heavenly Father.

In the third part of Ecclesiastes chapter 1 (verses 15 - 18) Solomon thought he had acquired great wisdom, but realized it was all meaningless and futile. The more wisdom and knowledge Solomon gained, the more vexation, grief and sorrow grew. This seems contrary to what we expect. Today we will discuss how God is after relationship with us, not just giving us wisdom and knowledge. We need to pursue relationship with Him.
