Renowned allergist- immunologist, associate chair of research in the Department of Population Health, and director of the Center for Health and Environment at Dell Medical School, Dr. Elizabeth Matsui shares her extensive knowledge on environmental exposures in asthma and the structural factors that contribute to existing health disparities. The listeners will be challenged to consider the preconceptions that they have when treating patients with a particular diagnosis.

In the episode we focus on the topic of listening. We explore the barriers to truly listening to our patients and their families and explore strategies to overcome those barriers. We reflect on how bias limits our ability to be open and really hear what patients, especially patients of color, are trying to tell us. We welcome patient representative and advocate, Lorena Martinez, who discusses her experiences and advice for pediatricians. We share tools for our audience to begin to become better listeners today.

In this episode we talk about the societal, cultural and psychological impact on trainees, staff and patients of being a bystander in a medical training environment. We are fortunate to have the expertise of Dr. Jewel Mullen, M.D., MPH, Associate Dean for Health Equity at the Dell Medical School and associate professor in UT-DMS’s Population Health and Internal Medicine departments, as well as Dr. Tina Ward, board certified Family Practice physician and current President of ABPA, Austin's Black Physician Association which is dedicated to the health and education of the African American and under-served communities in Central Texas. Our discussion encourages listeners to challenge complacency and strive towards a work culture that prioritizes speaking out against injustices, microaggressions and blatant acts of racism in the workplace and otherwise.
