No matter our differences, as humans, we all deserve to thrive in this world, irrespective of how we define ourselves."In other words, it's a resounding truth that transcends boundaries - every human, regardless of their uniqueness, has an undeniable right to live and flourish. When it comes to getting bullied at work or school, how would you handle such a disturbance? If you were fortunate enough to have never been bullied in school or at work, you are among the 6% of the population. This means that, according to research published in Forbes' October 2019 edition by Bryan Robinson, Ph.D. Contributor in Careers, workplace bullying has increased by 19 percent since 2008, rising from 75 percent to 94 percent in 2019!! Many folks I've spoken to either deal with this by attempting to avoid the bully (manager, or boss) as much as possible, getting pushed away and actually choosing to leave the workplace, or simply putting up with it. Stephanie tells us in the Podcast for Students in Education, "that we as humans are resilient, and that we amaze ourselves by the resilience within us!" This audio is a mash-up of several conversation threads, but it is really enlightening!! I hope you have the opportunity to interact with us!!

Stephanie Valenzuela is the Director of Alumni Relations at United Latino Students Association and an exceptional human being and leader. She is an undergrad studying sociology at University of California Riverside. Her story is lovely, as is her perception of how she handles herself when faced with difficulties. She is writing a narrative about herself that is empowering!!

Do you believe yourself to be a top performer at work? Someone who has worked extra hours to advance in their career? Do you adore your profession to the point where it has become a part of your life, requiring attention, focus, and complete immersion in the work you produce? What would you do if your body said to you, "OK, you don't like to take days off, so I'm going to give you two tiny strokes to take some time for yourself?" What would you do if your body couldn't perform at the same level it had for the previous 15 years?

Would you give up your newly acquired position now that it is more difficult for you to remember things due to your short-term memory loss as a result of the strokes, or how would you react if a coworker asked you to write something on the board during a meeting, but you physically couldn't because your body wouldn't allow it? You might think to yourself, “Can I do this, what am I doing, am I capable of doing this with my new bodily awareness?” The answer is absolutely yes.

Meet one of the many mentors I've had the pleasure of working with, Jennifer Brunson, a dedicated stellar employee and human being, whose body suffered two mini strokes after 15 years, affecting the way she does things. She is still very smart, and she now works differently, and in today's podcast, her story is incredibly inspirational, her mindset is of a champion and she shares many insights about her life story that many of you dedicated employees can relate to. You've done it before, opting to work 60 to 90 hours a week to demonstrate your ability. Jennifer responds to my inquiry about what she considers to be the most important lesson she has learnt in her life. What she says will take you by surprise.

You may not accept it, but because you are human, you may be reliant on the advice and encouragement of others; you must deal with external validation. I know I do, and for some reason, hearing "you're doing a fantastic job" validates me and makes me feel better. I had to learn to offer myself validation. It's a human need, even if it's difficult since the want for affirmation from parents, peers, coworkers, professors, friends, family members, bosses, and other people can be powerful. So, how do you handle lack of affirmation? By "Keeping in mind that you are the author of your own story!" says Alani Bankhead, CPC, ELI-MP, our guest speaker. Even the most self-reliant person requires validation at times; nonetheless, it is important to remember that you are capable of accepting your own self-validation if you do not receive it from others. In this episode, our guest speaker Alani Bankhead discusses the importance of finding who you are as a person. "At first, it may be difficult for you to speak about what is essential to you because you may be letting go of what the world is pressuring you to do," she says. When you say this is important to me, you're saying this is who I am, and it can be terrifying, hurtful, and vulnerable especially if society rejects your viewpoint." Alani utilizes the metaphor of a muscle to encourage us: “the more you practice being yourself in safe settings, speaking up for what you know is your fundamental value, and building on that on a regular basis, the better you will get!" We are here to give you permission and validation to be who you really are now. BE YOU!!!!

Can I tell you something between you and me? I've had to learn to persevere when I've struggled to understand some complex textbook readings. What are some of the challenges you face in class or at work? Imagine losing your hearing in your left ear and becoming blind in both eyes. How would you handle being a student, or professional? Would you give up and make excuses or would you choose to move forward no matter what challenges you face?  Meet my inspiration, Jordan Puente, an outstanding, intelligent, and brilliant classmate whom I met during the Spring 2022 semester while we were both enrolled in Non-Verbal Communications 350 at California State University, Northridge. Jordan takes us back to the age of eight months when it all began for him, when he lost his hearing and vision. Since he was eight months old, his perseverance, resilience, and swagger, together with the support of his family and friends, have helped him draw closer to the finish line of a long list of achievements and a Bachelor’s degree. If you're feeling down, sorry for yourself, or think academia is too difficult, or you don't have support, I strongly advise you to listen to Jordan's tale and keep going in the direction of your goals and aspirations! Jordan has been cancer-free for 26 years. At the age of eight months, he was diagnosed with leukemia and required a bone marrow transplant. After 24 years, he went to Mt Sac and conducted his own radio show for two years before COVID intervened and cut his time short. He transferred to CSUN and is now a Sports Editor for the Daily Sundial, where he is majoring in Communications Studies with a concentration in Journalism. He is a huge sports fan who also enjoys podcasting!

Being vulnerable is a theme in poetry. Both Carida and I went through an intriguing phase in the Fall of 2022. I can totally identify to her spoken word expressions, and it's such a powerful topic that affects both women and men. We hope that this conversation on weight might shift the narrative toward positivism and self-confidence so that we can love ourselves no matter how much we weigh.

If you are someone who has struggled with weight like both Caridad and I have, this is a conversation worth listening to!

Due to the lack of mobility imposed by the stay-at-home requirement during the global epidemic, many Americans have seen an increase in their waistlines.

In today's episode we have a special poetic expression shared by my colleague Caridad Valle, whom I had the pleasure to be in the same remote Poetry and Performance class during the Fall 2021 semester.

Caridad Valle is a communication and sociology senior at California State University, Northridge. Her ambition has always been to work at a film or television studio, however, her dreams are constantly evolving. As a first-generation college student, she places a high value on graduation. Her parents are Cuban and Mexican, and they have helped her get to where she is now, and thriving is important to her in order to secure her future. We discuss working remotely and the sociology aspect included in the classroom during our zoom meetings. That part of sociology and of the students being "seeing" was completely embodied in our class, and because we were able to experience the essence of human "beingness" while working remotely, it was a revolutionary experience! She discusses a topic that many women face. When it comes to body image, we look into immigrant obesity, our ancestral heritage, and have a heart-to-heart conversation about present society and history. "We want to break the mold that you fit into," Caridad said. This is an incredible discussion on our experiences as students and how we regard our bodies.

When it comes to our education, many of us merely go through the motions to acquire that degree, and then we're left wondering, "Now what?" Many students overlook the importance of incorporating our passion into our aim of earning that degree, as well as determining what type of employment we want to do. In today's episode, I strongly advise you to listen to Entrepreneur Amanda's real-life success story, in which she shares with us vital questions and experiences that we as students may ask ourselves and learn from her along our educational path.

Amanda's business, Inside Out Spa, is thriving in today's recession, and I don't know about you, but I prefer to learn from those who are fulfilling their dreams and making progress in the midst of a historic crisis we are all facing. Listen to her motivational narrative and tell me what you think! We address a variety of topics in this podcast, but one that Amanda brings up is the fact that whatever decisions we make, they will be reflected in our bodies.
