In today’s conversation, Judy and I dive into the fashion fads that shaped us and how we view fashion today. From bellbottom jeans and go-go boots to conservative wear and big hair, our stories capture the essence of our past. But here's the kicker: writing these stories isn't just about preserving the past; it's about exploring what these memories reveal about us and how they shape our present lives. With curiosity and reflection, we uncover real gems about ourselves. And let me tell you, we're all in for this introspective journey!

This summer, the Sidetracked Sisters will be blogging and talking about topics that resonate deeply with us. We hope they resonate with you too! We'll explore health and wellness, personal development, family, relationships, retirement, hobbies, leisure, and more. Come September, we'll narrow things down based on your feedback.

So, tune in for some juicy writing and fascinating conversations. Let's make the next chapter of our lives the best one yet! Now, here we go…

In today’s conversation, Judy and I discuss the writings the Sidetracked Sisters did this week about "A Funny Memory of Childhood," and let me tell you, the stories were golden! Three of them were about our kids or grandkids, and only one was a personal trip down memory lane. We laughed a lot, reminiscing about these priceless moments. They were fantastic to capture on paper, but here's the kicker: writing these stories isn't just about preserving the past. It's also about digging deep to see what these memories reveal about us and how they still shape our lives today. With a bit of curiosity and reflection, we can uncover some real gems about ourselves. And let me tell you, we're all in for this introspective journey!

Most people live their lives without answering either. So, we have a challenge for you today... Give yourself permission to decide and create your answers!

Do you ever feel “meh” about your purpose, relationships, career…life? According to Wikipedia, meh (/mɛ/) is a colloquial interjection used as an expression of indifference or boredom. It is often regarded as a verbal equivalent of a shrug of the shoulders. The term "meh" shows that the speaker is apathetic, uninterested, or indifferent to the question or subject at hand. Today Judy and I begin an exploration of apathy. I’ve talked with so many women who have gone through the motions of life for so long that they don’t even know where to begin when it comes to living a full, vibrant, and exciting life. We discuss how apathy develops and the first step in moving out of and through feelings of “meh”. Instead, I look forward to becoming more interesting, improving my memory, and reducing stress. With that said, please put book recommendations (fiction or nonfiction) in the comments. "Acceptance means no complaining, and happiness means no complaining about the things over which you can do nothing." --Dr. Wayne Dyer (Your Erroneous Zones)

Today Judy and I dig into the vintage self-help book "Your Erroneous Zones". This was Dr. Wayne Dyer's first book, published almost a half-century ago. It offers practical advice on how to break free from destructive thought patterns and overcome negative emotions. It was the first book of its kind that Judy had ever read...and it blew her mind back in 1977.

Then we discuss how its concepts are still relevant. We specifically look at two sections: The first is about the useless emotions of guilt and worry and the second is about breaking free from the past and not getting sucked into negative thought loops.

"We cannot become what we want by remaining what we are." --Max DepreeToday Judy and I are open with our audience about some changes we are considering for the new year. We love talking about life "blockages" and talking with others who have overcome writer's block specifically. We love writing and think everyone should be journaling or writing some regular "morning pages". But..in the next podcast season, we want to branch out. We will continue to write, AND we want to explore other options for self-development and growth for those of us who aren't exactly spring chickens any longer.

In this episode and the next, we invite you to help us make the 2024 season even more interesting, relevant, and motivating. Please comment with suggestions, or you can message us with your thoughts!

"Your story matters. More importantly, you matter." -anonymous

Today's episode goes out to everyone who considers themselves a lifelong writer...those who haven't written since a high school English class, and everyone in between. It's for those with complicated life experiences...those who have lived calm, secure, healthy "boring" lives--and everyone in between. Maybe you've traveled to all 7 continents and been married to five different people. Or, perhaps you live in the same town where you were born and raised and have been happily single...forever.

It's time to get your story down on paper.

And we have exciting news!

Not only do we want you to get your life stories down on paper, but we've got some new ideas to help you get it done!

Every day of our lives, we are on the verge of making those slight changes that would make all the difference – Mignon McLaughlin

Judy and I talk about "changing it up". Whether you are a writer or looking to be more creative, it's time to flip your schedule, experiment with food, and get out of the house! I believe that we are all happiest when we are creating. Let's get out of that rut and use some of today’s suggestions to adjust our perspective. Lawyers, teachers, computer gurus, sales associates, corporate managers, and industrial engineers all benefit from getting unblocked. Creativity is something that makes us just. feel. good. We should all want to inject creativity into our lives and our work.

In other words, this episode, this podcast is for you...whoever you are...whatever you make.

Today Judy and I dig into the connection between writing and the divine. We both agree that it is definitely a spiritual practice--whether or not that is the intention. In our discussion, we highlight 3 main benefits of looking at our writing as prayer: 1) improved concentration, 2) develop connection, and 3) document your spiritual journey.

And here is one more quote that informed our conversation today…“Writing is one of the most ancient forms of prayer. To write is to believe communication is possible, that other people are good, that you can awaken their generosity, and their desire to do better.” -Fatema Mernissi (Moroccan feminist writer and sociologist)

"Good thinkers always prime the pump of ideas. They always look for things to get the thinking process started, because what you put in always impacts what comes out." --John C. Maxwell (American author, coach, and speaker)And, what does it mean, exactly to "prime the pump"? According to Google, this phrase means "to encourage the growth or action of something. In the late 1800s, this expression was originally used for pouring liquid into a pump to get rid of the air and make it work. Then, in the 1930s it was applied to government efforts to stimulate the economy."

Well, today Judy and I help you prime the pump of your writing. We want to get our words out and down on paper. We want to get our ideas out into the world. But to do this most efficiently, sometimes we have to kind of trick our brains into writing. We want to get that creative water of our thoughts flowing...and that's what we'll get into today...

Today Judy and I get into the all the feels! We dig into WHY we both love to write...and we get deep. We discuss why we write for ourselves and for our loved ones. We recognize that there is a different "why" for us puting writing out for a wider audience--the world really--to read and consume.

You see, we believe that we, all of us as humans, have a deep desire to see and be seen, to hear and be heard, to know and be known. We also want to know that by connecting with others , we can, in some small way, makie this world a little bit better.

Thoughts are the cause of all emotions in our lives. Whatever we decide to believe and think will determine how we feel. -Brooke Castillo (The Life Coach School)

Today Judy and I get into our heads and talk about our thoughts. As a life coach, I talk with my clients about how a circumstance can trigger thoughts, these thoughts cause feelings, our feelings drive actions, and actions create results.

So...we get into 4 questions that will help you shed some light on your thoughts. These questions will help you look at your thoughts about writing and about you as a writer. It is a good starting point to examine some foundational beliefs that could either set you up to be a prolific, motivated, and successful writer...or...not.

Questions:

  1. What do you think about writing?

  2. What do you think about yourself as a writer?

  3. What have your people (family/teachers) taught you about your writing?

  4. What do you WANT to believe about writing and yourself as a writer?

"Writing is like pizza. Cold pizza, good pizza, bad pizza...it's better than no pizza. So remember: bad writing is better than no writing." --Lauren Oliver author of Vanishing Girls

Welcome to the Overcoming Writer's Block podcast episode #137.

Today Judy and I had some fun with pizza. A couple of hours before we talked, I was on a walk with my dogs and listening to a podcast. The speaker was explaining that when they were writing, they often really struggled with the worry, the fear really, of what other people--family mostly--would think of the story. This was a major block to their ability to get their words down on paper.

And, well, my brain went to pizza. (Not sure why...) It started to use pizza as a metaphor to illustrate why other people's opinions should have no bearing on your writing.

In my conversation with Judy, we talked for a while before I hit record. I didn't know if this was too much of a stretch. But we decided to go with the idea and just have fun with it.

"Sometimes people ask me if I regret 'wasting' those decades before I learned to believe in my writing and take it seriously. No, I tell them. I was gestating, amassing experience and material I tap into when I write my poems today." --Rebecca Faust (poet)

As a woman with many diverse experiences behind me, I recognize that life is always changing. We are always learning... something. In each stage of life, it often feels like that is the way it will always be. But, that isn't the case. In writing, sometimes I feel tornado-ish (writing comes fast and easy). At other times, I'm in a more potato-ish place (boring and bland). If life has its ups and downs, peaks and troughs, doesn't it make sense that our experience with writing will also?

Today, Judy and I talk about writing when we feel like it, and when we don't. Because...that's just the way it works.

"I'm the other kind of writer. I don't write every day. I don't have set hours that I write (and I know I should). But I get there eventually...I want it to be an enjoyable process." --Heidi Eliason

Have you ever felt suffocated by your routine and responsibilities, or just longed for some adventure? Heidi Eliason did, so at the age of 45 she quit her job, sold her house, bought a motorhome, and embarked on a five-year road trip with her dog, Rylie. It was a journey that transformed her life.

Through memoir, she recounts the challenges of managing the Green Monster--her motorhome--traveling in Mexico, and getting derailed by Mr. Wrong. She learned--sometimes the hard way--that chasing the corporate ladder and storybook romance was not always a sure route to happiness. She struggled with insecurities, faced her fears, and dug her way out of depression.

Today I talk with Heidi about her process to write the story of this journey.

She hopes that her book, Confessions of a Middle-Aged Runaway, may help others to find the courage to jump off the hamster wheel of the conventional Dream and make a transformative journey of their own. And perhaps you will be inspired, by our conversation today, to write about YOUR journey!

"If you have an idea, you should run with it. That idea was given to you for a reason, and you...YOU are the person who is supposed to take that idea and make something out of it." -- Melanie Gareau

Today I talk with Melanie Gareau. She is a parent, educator, and author who lost a student to suicide and the experience shattered her heart. As a form of self-therapy, she turned to writing. This writing in turn developed into a resource for teenagers and young adults--WHY ME? What now?

Melanie knew that kids don't want or need to be told what to do or what to think. There are enough people trying to do that already. Instead, she wants to empower teens to talk, ask for help, find support, and do what feels right for them. Her book is a resource with stories and practical advice to empower readers. The struggle is real, but it is possible to meet life's challenges and come out the other side stronger and more resilient.

Author Lois Lowry was asked about her writing process and how she got over writer's block (here). She answered, "I write on a computer and I have never suffered from writer's block. In fact, I don't believe in it. It's a made-up term that has taken on some kind of silly importance. Writing is a job. Some days you don't feel like doing your job. But there is no 'teacher's block' or 'dentist's block.' I can't figure out why we have created this mysterious phrase .. only for writers .. which only means 'I don't feel like doing this right now'."

Today, Judy and I talk about the possibility that writer's block doesn't. even. exist. We get into three strategies that you've definitely heard of before that you are probably already doing. And like many well-known, successful techniques, it's sometimes nice to know that you're on the right track. These practices are like a vaccine that protects you from getting all blocked up. Today I interview the author of "Untethered", Deborah Staunton. In her book, Deb tells the story of growing up with a mentally ill, alcoholic father and the experience of raising a mentally ill daughter. It follows Deb's journey through multiple miscarriages and the "untethering" of minds, relationships, and pregnancies.

At one point in our interview, Deb says, "I just have to get 200 rejections and I'm on my way." This statement beautifully illustrates Deb's tenacity when faced with challenges.

In this episode, we talk about Deb's writing process and the resources she has accessed during the process of writing, editing, and publishing her book.

She talks candidly and with encouragement to others who have a story to tell. Her book is a testimony to the resilience of the human spirit and Deb inspires other writers to keep moving forward in the process of writing and getting their work out into the world.

Deborah's book Untethered can be found everywhere you buy books including Walmart, Amazon, and Barnes&Noble

You can find Deb on Facebook here and she recommends that you check out the International Women's Writers Guild for support in your writing journey.

"Our dilemma is that we hate change and love it at the same time; what we really want is for things to remain the same but get better." -Sydney J. Harris

Judy and I are so excited for today's episode. We have a BIG announcement...you see, the Sidetracked Sisters are very familiar with change. I think it comes with the territory of being "sidetracked". That said, today we want to share with our listeners some changes we are embarking on. We are ready to get into our thoughts about where the Sidetracked Sisters have been, where we are currently, and where we are going. We want our writing and our podcast to get better. We want to touch and encourage more people. And...we know we can't reach these two goals without making some changes.

Oh, and I can't forget to mention (in the midst of this chaos) that we get into some thoughts about overcoming writer's block.

Change is on the horizon. And guess what? We want YOU to come along for the ride.

"An unexamined life isn't worth living." -Socrates

"An examined life is no picnic." -Robert Fulghum

Judy and I love to write! We write by ourselves and with our Sidetracked Sisters. We like to do legacy writing and come up with blog posts. We also do a lot of journal writing.

In our conversation, we discuss a variety of reasons why journal writing is so valuable. But perhaps the most important reason is that we write to process current problems and old traumas so that we see the lessons life offers.

We do this processing by following a "Think, Feel, Do" framework. We begin by freely describing a problem or circumstance and then getting into the surrounding thoughts and feelings. Then we follow this up with a listing of our actions...how we responded, or how we wish we had reacted. It's a valuable strategy to process and consider how you want to move forward.

"Clean and nourish your brain wisely every day. It can easily become a garbage bin." --Philip Arnold

Today, Judy and I talk about why we like to write first thing in the morning. We get into the fact that I am a "morning person" and she is definitely NOT. This doesn't change the fact that morning writing is so important.

It doesn't matter what you call your morning writing. It is sometimes called "morning pages" or "thought downloads"--but whatever you call your journaling time, it is like clearing out the junk, getting the garage cleared out...just really dealing with the gunk that would otherwise muck up our brains!

“Why doesn’t constant trampling defeat the dandelion? The key to its strength is its long and sturdy root, which extends deep into the earth. The same principle applies to people. The true victors in life are those who, enduring repeated challenges and setbacks, have sent the roots of their being to such a depth that nothing can shake them.”  Daisaku Ikeda

Welcome to the "Sidetracked Legacies" podcast #124.

In today's episode, Judy and I riff on dandelions! We talk about what happens when you stop and smell the dandelions. It opens up questions, thoughts, ideas, and memories for us. We can use this experience as a tool to get deeper into our writing practice...deeper into ourselves. The practice helps to grow our roots.

We also explore how learning and writing are best explored with a playful attitude.

What we really want for ourselves and our audience is to use tools (like dandelions) to live more in the moment, live our best life, and help us appreciate beauty--wherever it may be found.

"Writing helps open you up. It is peeling the onion. We always get deeply into other layers as we pull the one from the outside off. We even get tears sometimes when we do that." --Judy Goodson

I thought Judy was speaking such words of wisdom when she said that. Later, I found out that others agreed with her comparison...Pulitzer Prize-winning poet, Carl Sandberg is quoted saying, "Life is like an onion. You peel it off one layer at a time, and sometimes you weep." Wow. Judy and Carl Sandberg...who'd have known?!?

Today Judy and I got together and discussed how writing is a practice. Thinking about the similarities between writing, life, and onions, we recognize how all three have layers and bring out emotion.

We talk about how we aren't going for perfection in our writing. We use it as a practice. The writing gets us into a writer's awareness of the world and our experiences in it.

Next, we get into what we do when we feel resistance to writing and how common that resistance is when it's time to write. We actually have begun to expect resistance and just...do it anyway!

We give ourselves permission to write whatever comes. It's even ok to let the worst junk come through our pens and sit on the page.

Later we move into Judy's process to write poetry.

Wrapping up this session, Judy and I talk about how writing fits within the concept of the "blue zones". It helps us in a meditative kind of way. It helps us downshift and become more aware of our own minds. It also connects us with our right tribe--people who are interesting to us and interested in us. Writing helps us bond with others who are like-minded.

"Whether you're keeping a journal or writing a meditation, it's the same thing. What's important is that you're having a relationship with your mind." --Natalie Goldberg

Today Judy and I got together and discussed making time to write. Thinking about the quote by Natalie Goldberg, I can't help but recognize the importance of TIME when you are building a relationship. You can't have a deep, solid, intimate relationship with anyone (even your own mind) if you don't devote time to the process.

In this episode, we talk about making time for writing. It's not something that you FIND time to do, you MAKE the commitment to the time.

Some of our favorite people talk about the importance of committing time to write: Hal Erod talks about "scribing" in The Miracle Morning, Julia Cameron talks about "morning pages" in The Artist's Way, and Mathew Dicks in his books Someday is Today and Storyworthy gets into the concept of "homework for life". Each of these people encourages us to make time daily to record our thoughts, experiences, and random brain droppings.

Judy and I talk about what this looks like for us. We get into how writing works for non-writers too. It is for anyone who is trying to do anything creative. Whether you are a teacher, a dancer, a lawyer, a stay-at-home mom, or a retired real estate agent...journal writing, daily scribing, is for those of us who want to nurture our own life experience and connect to an inner power source.

“I must write it all out, at any cost. Writing is thinking. It is more than living, for it is being conscious of living.” -Anne Morrow Lindbergh

Today Judy and I talked about how writers use writing to become more thoughtful and aware of life. Judy uses the analogy of living life as a swimmer diving under the surface to explore the depths when we write about our lives.

We also briefly talk about using small notebooks to record lists, inspirational quotes, and observations that feel important at the moment.

Near the end, we get into the idea that we don't always write to impart knowledge...but to inform ourselves, remind ourselves, teach ourselves, and maybe even use writing to keep ourselves accountable to what is important to us.

Finally, we offer a challenge quick daily writing challenge.

"It's a human need to be told stories. The more we're governed by idiots and have no control over our destinies, the more we need to tell stories to each other about who we are, why we are here, where we come from, and what might be possible." -Alan Rickman

This quote seemingly came out of nowhere when I surfed on social media the other day. When it did, I was speechless and knew I had the seed for something exciting for Judy and me to talk about. So, in this episode, we get into the value of digging up our past and sharing it with others. We discuss the significance of honoring the who and the why of our present, the where of our past, and the what of the future we might create.

"Memory takes a lot of poetic license. It omits some details; others are exaggerated, according to the emotional value of the articles it touches, for memory is seated predominantly in the heart." --Tennessee Williams

Today Judy and I talk about sharing our legacy writing by telling our stories. We use poetic license to share in a way that feels true and elevates a story in a way that makes it interesting to tell and causes our readers to want to learn more. Not that our storytelling is in any way artificial or false, but we want to write in a way that helps us reflect on the experience and draws our readers in.

We also get into how our writing has a connection with meditation. We are able to get into a deeper place and quiet our monkey mind when we put our pen to the paper and remember...

“When you write your truth, it is a love offering to the world because it helps us feel braver and less alone.” -Glennon Doyle

Today Judy and I talked about the need to be truthful in our writing. We want others to recognize that any piece of writing is really a snapshot in time. We talk about how every family has their sh*t and this event, situation, or story just happens to be ours. We also briefly understand that truth-sharing makes our writing relatable and gives it depth. Lessons are made of "real" experiences.

Near the end, we get into the role of "poetic license" in writing and the place of self-analysis in storytelling. Or, to quote Judy, "You can get more attention from your reader and you can make your point more clearly by sharing an experience than by having them suffer through explanation!"

“To be truly seen and heard, to be truly known, is a deep human need. Our hunger for it is so omnipresent, so much a part of our experience of life, that we no more know what it is we are missing than a fish knows it is wet.” -Charles Einstein (American author and podcaster)

Today Judy and I talk about the desire we have to be seen and heard, and known through our writing We give our thoughts and opinions on a variety of kinds of ways to do this. We talk about the pros and cons of morning pages, daily logs, and artistic "junk" journals. We also briefly get into specific journals for dreams, food, books, travel, gratitude, and goals.

Near the end, we share some motivating thoughts on the benefits of legacy writing and ponder the value of really putting ourselves "out there" to be seen by others in an intensely profound way.

"Start writing, no matter what. The water does not flow until the faucet is turned on." --Louis L'Mour

In this episode, Judy and I discuss the exciting task of beginning writing or starting a new journal. We both, however, have a collection of journals and notebooks that we've used to keep our thoughts or record progress toward a goal. Some of them are finished and have no blank pages left. Others will never ever be complete.

We talk about what to do when you start a new journal and we get into the problem of unfinished notebooks and the decision to let blank pages stay blank.

Then we wrap up our discussion with a brainstorming session on "touchstones" that we plan to use when beginning a new journal.

"Man has two great gifts: 'words' to give sound to thoughts, and 'writing' to give thoughts meaning forever."

-Gianfranco Iovino (Italian writer/author)

Today Judy and I talk about what we use to collect our writing and the writing of others that we've saved over the years.

Then we share some of the writing we've actually collected over the years and we get into what we like to use as we journal.

We also get into the possibility that our writing isn't only for others to someday read in the distant future, but maybe, it's also for you--to honor where you've been, what you've done, and what you've learned.

Today Judy and I get into the final C of our "5 Cs of Legacy Writing" series--CRAFT.

In our conversation, we talk about finding and telling interesting stories and whether or not you should worry about using "proper English" when you record your thoughts and ideas. So many people have hangups about grammar, spelling, and punctuation. But we want to encourage you not to let these details silence your voice.

Then, later in the discussion about craft, we get into "voice" specifically. We want to use "voice" in our legacy writing. The way our personality comes through on the page is especially important since you are telling a true story. It is your unique point of view that needs to shine through.

Today Judy and I get into the 4th C in our "5 Cs of Legacy Writing" series--COMMUNICATION.

In this episode, we begin to understand the power that serendipity has in our writing. (That is when you accidentally stumble upon something truly wonderful, especially while looking for something entirely unrelated.)

Sometimes we come totally prepared for a writing time together, sometimes not so much, and occasionally, we are not prepared. at. all. But it really doesn't seem to matter. What comes out onto the page is often surprising. But we feel that it was totally meant to be.

As the conversation develops, we realize that it doesn't matter if you are old or young, male or female, an extrovert or an introvert...we are recording pieces of our lives to communicate and powerfully connect with others.

Today Judy Goodson and I discuss the 3rd C in our 5 Cs of Legacy Writing series--COURAGE!

In L. Frank Baum's famous story, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, the wizard encourages the cowardly lion with a potion and says, "You have plenty of courage, I am sure. All you need is confidence in yourself. There is no living thing that is not afraid when it faces danger. The true courage is in facing danger when you are afraid, and that kind of courage you have in plenty."

Well, we may not be facing DANGER when faced with a pen and a journal but many of us lack the self-confidence to write and want to protect ourselves from the cutting danger of criticism.

In this episode, Judy and lisa discuss courage and the questions so many of us have about getting our thoughts down. Then we get into the questions "Who are you writing for?" and "What have you got to lose?"

We continue our 5 Cs of Legacy Writing Series with C #2--CONFIDENCE.

Statesman and financier Bernard Boruch once wisely advised, "Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind." Isn't that the truth?!? With this in mind, Judy and Lisa dig into the how-tos of having confidence while writing. We talk about being comfortable in your own skin, and in your own experiences. Then we tackle how to dispel self-doubt. Lastly, we get into celebrating individuality.

You know American actress Meryl Streep, well, she is quoted as saying, "What makes you different or weird, that's your strength." We couldn't agree more!

"Carve your name on hearts, not tombstones. A legacy is etched into the minds of others and the stories they share about you."

--Shannon Adler (inspirational author and therapist)

My husband's Grandpa Matt Hoffman passed away peacefully earlier this week. I had just recently really gotten to know him. Since the middle of July, I had visited him about once a week. Now sometimes I wasn't available. Sometimes he wasn't feeling well. But we got together and talked about his family, his memories, his thoughts...his life.

I just brought my phone along and set it on the linoleum table between us. I'd bring up a subject and he'd talk. When he glossed over something, I'd try to get more details. Sometimes I'd repeat names to make sure I understood who he was talking about. (He often would refer to people, long gone, like they were people everyone knew.)

From my first interview on July 12th, through my last interview on November 8th, I have a little over 12 hours of memories, thoughts, ramblings, laughter, and LEGACY.

Now, these conversations are not a memoir. There is no storyline, no character development, he didn't speak with the goal to capture your imagination and draw you into his life.

No.

He was just sharing.

We had conversations where I was interested in the life he lived.

What did he want me and others to know...to remember?

In today's episode, I'm sharing with you the beginning of our very first talk. I begin our conversation with, "The goal of this is...we just want to sit down and talk about you and your stories...what you remember from your childhood...and all the things."

In the next weeks, I will transcribe his memories and put these together with pictures that I took during my visits, scanned into the computer, and then returned on my next visit.

We will put this all together through Sidetracked Legacies and publish it into a beautiful hardcover book for family and close friends. This will be an invaluable keepsake for those who knew him and loved him. It will be a treasured resource to share with the children of his children's children...and their children!

Leslie Ferguson started writing poetry in college to deal with troubling emotions and traumatic memories from her childhood. In graduate school, she was more courageous, and wrote scenes from memory, trying to recapture the mood of much of her life with a mentally ill parent. During the day, she taught high schoolers about literature; in the evening, she studied and wrote, eventually amassing more than 200,000 words about her journey from homelessness and foster care to safety and love. Those words, critiqued, edited, and rewritten countless times, have come to shape the memoir she is proud to share with the world.

Leslie writes about love, loss, and the consequences of trauma, emphasizing healing and hope. Currently, she work in the publishing industry, helping others achieve their dreams of putting amazing stories into readers’ hands.

I'll bet you can relate to this post that my guest shared this week

My name is Jelaine Lombardi and I am a writer. There, I said it.

For years I have kept these words silent, as I feverishly wrote on. I minimized the importance of my story. I could not even speak of my book without embarrassment clinging to my words.

Imposter syndrome.

Who am I to think I can write?

But I did it. I completed my memoir. 117,000 words of it!

I am not saying that I am a great writer. I may not have proper command of grammar or the lovely twist of a metaphor.

I am just saying this. I am a writer!

This week I interviewed Jelaine Lombardi. She is self-publishing a memoir entitled "Running Around Naked". During our time together, we get into ALL. THE. THINGS! We talk about the process of completing a memoir, self-publishing, writers supporting other writers, and about life growing up in a nudist park! I can't wait to share this episode with you so we can all give Jelaine some love and support when her book drops (she'll keep us updated).

Jelaine's favorite places to hang out and connect are the following Facebook groups: Aspiring Memoir Writers, Memoir Mentors, Memoir Writers, and Happy Writers (which is not necessarily memoir but has been great for resources).

Maya Angelou once said, "The idea is to write it so that people hear it and it slides through the brain and goes straight to the heart."

Well, I don't think that any of our attempts at writing a poem are going to pierce anyone's heart, but it was interesting, challenging, and dare I say it...FUN!?!

Judy is the poet among us Sidetracked Sisters and she can come up with a thought in verse as easy as pie. Michelle has written a few poems in the past. Me, I taught a poetry writing unit to First Graders for years that focused on looking carefully at something and making connections with your senses through free verse (not rhyming). Sandy, doesn't even read poetry. But she is always game for something new...

So we sat down at the restaurant and just began (there may have been Margaritas involved). Now, we did have a week to think about our topic... For me, my hubby and I had just had a conversation with our oldest son, who at the age of 18 is going to make us grandparents. During our conversation, he excitedly, announced that he planned on being a "fun dad". He said this in a way that indicated a significant expectation and daydreaming hopefulness about the upcoming experience--no irony at all!

The phrase continued to ring in my ears through the following week. On my walks with the dogs, brushing my teeth, driving to pick up my daughter...I compared his dreamy words with the reality of parenting him for the past 7 years. But how do you brew one off-hand comment with the angst of a middle schooler and the rebellion of a high school child? How do you shine a light into hope while keeping your feet on the solid ground of reality?

My poem, "Fun Dad" is an amateur's attempt at letting the words of my heart bleed onto the paper. Not a lot of blood...just a little. And I'm the only one who went into the writing this week with a knife. Everyone else took a much more lighthearted approach to the topic. And, what's most important--we spent a lovely time with one another, talking, eating, laughing, and doing our legacy writing...

We are so excited to announce the opening of the Sidetracked Legacies Membership!!! As a kickoff, we put together 2 Facebook Lives and a Zoom broadcast to share with our people.

In the first Facebook Live, Lisa gave some history behind the Sidetracked Sisters and laid out the importance of creating a legacy for your family, loved ones, and community. In the second FB Live, all the Sidetracked Sisters got to put in their ten cents worth of opinion about writing and recording your thoughts, opinions, and life lessons.

Unfortunately, it appears that these are now only available on our Facebook site.

On the third day of our kickoff, Lisa and Judy tried a Zoom meeting instead. We use Zoom all. the. time. and found it to be a lot easier to navigate. Soooooo, now we have the recording from that third installment of our Sidetracked Legacies Membership Kickoff/Workshop/Hoopla.

Legacy Writing is for everyone! We want you to know that YOU have valuable, precious, and powerful thoughts that need to be shared and preserved. In this conversation, we lay out the 5 Cs of Legacy Writing: Committment, Confidence, Courage, Communication, and Craft.

Here is a favorite poem about the importance of raising children with an eye toward preparing them to leave. It is by Kahlil Gibran and I included it at the end of our portfolio to show birth mothers when we adopted our daughter Aubrey. It goes like this:

*Your children are not your children.

They are the sons and daughters of Life’s longing for itself.

They come through you but not from you,

And though they are with you yet they belong not to you.*

*You may give them your love but not your thoughts,

For they have their own thoughts.

You may house their bodies but not their souls,

For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.

You may strive to be like them but seek not to make them like you.

For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.

You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth.

The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite, and He bends you with His might that His arrows may go swift and far.

Let your bending in the archer’s hand be for gladness;

For even as He loves the arrow that flies, so He loves also the bow that is stable.*

This poem so beautifully honors a child's "growing up" and not only the parent's role to "raise up" a child but the ultimate importance of letting go. We really do want to train our children in such a way so that they don't need us...but maybe they still want us?!?

In this week's writing, Sandy, Judy, 'Chelle, and I talk about leaving home. It colors who we are as adults and gives us perspective on how we raise/raised our own children. We reminisce about lessons, fun times, and how we made parenting challenging (at times) for our own parents.

This week the Sidetracked Sisters got together and wrote about the topic of our 3rd decade of life. I don't remember why this random topic sounded so interesting a few weeks ago that we all wanted to write about it. Because...when we actually sat down to get our thoughts down, it was like, "arghhhh, what am I going to write about?!?"

It's crazy how often this happens to us. We get together to write and then, just a few moments or minutes before we begin, it's like there is a group panic attack that tries to shut down the process.

But fortunately, the four of us are committed to this legacy writing adventure, and not writing isn't really an option. That is the power of writing with others in a community.

Speaking of community, this is also a plug for our "Sidetracked Legacies Membership" that just opened!!! You can learn more about the membership by going to our site sidetrackedsisters.com and tuning in to our Facebook page for (3) 20-30 minute LIVE events this week. Lisa and the other Sidetracked Sisters will be showing up at 7 pm Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday this week (September 14, 15, and 16) at 7 pm CST to share more details about the membership, talk about some bonuses that are available to our founding members, and talk more about how LEGACY writing is different than other forms of writing that you may be familiar with--and why YOU should WANT to do your own legacy writing!

I know, this topic isn't for the faint of heart. It isn't as concrete and specific as some others we've chosen. but this was a fun challenge and brought up a wide variety of stories and memories.

Welcome to Episode 100!!! I am your host, Lisa Hoffman and I am so excited today! The Sidetracked Sisters began this podcast back in January and we have had so much fun talking about legacy writing, sharing with you, and demonstrating how people can come to a topic from a variety of perspectives. I have LOVED interviewing other creative people--writers, visual artists, entrepreneurs, and memoirists. The goal is to inspire YOU to create a lasting legacy with your life for your family, friends, loved ones, and community.

Today's topic, "Lessons From Grandma" is really where so many of our legacy stories begin...and end. In my life, I didn't realize how much my grandmas were living examples for me of deep life lessons. When my Grandma Is was alive, I neglected to get down her recipe for her special creamed chicken. When my grandma Doris was alive, she asked me about myself and my life, but I never reciprocated or showed an interest in her life, her experiences as a young woman or her stories from early in her marriage with little kids. Now my opportunity is past.

With Sidetracked Legacies, we don't want YOU to miss the opportunity to pass on YOUR wisdom! We are happy to announce today that we will be opening our membership in mid-September. This membership will provide the support and guidance for you to work on your own legacy project and publish it. The membership will consist of weekly writing prompts, an exclusive Facebook membership site, a monthly group writing workshop, and a published book at the end of 52 weeks!

"Cooking is like love. It should be entered into with abandon or not at all." --Harriet VanHorne (American newspaper columnist and ratio/t.v. critic)

As I'm writing this introduction, the smell of something baking, cooking, or slightly burning is reaching me in my office. I'm sure that my daughter Aubrey is experimenting in the kitchen and making a mess--if nothing else!

The Sidetracked Sisters got together this week and wrote down a favorite family recipe and a memory to go along with it. I got down grandma Is' Rhubarb Custard Pie and the accompanying schnibble "cookies". Sandy tries to recreate her mother's Creamed Chicken. Judy goes back to her young adulthood for an experimental Chile Relleno Casserole and Michelle shares the Cajun Cheese Soup that EVERYONE in our family loves. loves. loves.

Oh, by the way, it is my 13-year-old daughter who is making deep-fried Oreos. We went to the county fair this past weekend and she was inspired. When I asked her where she got the recipe, she said, "I didn't."

"What do you mean?" I asked.

"I didn't have a recipe," she replied.

"How did you make the coating?"

"Pancake batter."

Huh. Who needs heirloom recipes when you can confidently create your own delicacies from scratch? She definitely enters into her cooking with abandon! I think I have a chef in the making...

"It's in hearing the same stories over and over again that helps build bonds, not just in families, but in groups of friends. It's in whatever community you have that those legacies exist." --Laura Packer (storyteller, coach, real-time dreamer)

Laura is preaching to the choir!!! This is exactly what the Sidetracked Sisters have been working on and talking about for years.

In our interview, Laura and I talk about how it is the everyday stuff that is so important to capture when talking with loved ones and recording stories. We so often think about the big things in life, weddings, births, and jobs as important. Or we look to historical events as the big stories to record. But it's really the little things, the private and intimate happenings that bring that connection with others.

We talk about some of our own stories and the people who inspire us. Laura shares suggestions for telling and recording a good story. She gets into how you can find your voice and deepen your creativity.

Laura is in all the places on the web!

"Cannibals say we taste like pork, and bacon is my spirit animal, so we are probably delicious." --Jenny Lawson (blogger and memoirist)

"Our writing doesn't always have to be productive...or a part of something else. It is important for writers to have that freedom, that exercise of writing." --Annie Toro Lopez Boy, do I understand what she is talking about! Sometimes it feels so good to write with no expectations or goals! When I was a kid, I loved the idea of writing in a diary. As I got older, it became a journal. But that feeling of just writing for me, to get my thoughts down for its own sake has always felt powerful. Annie was older than the average when she graduated from college and became a middle school Literacy and History teacher. But then, a near-death experience caused her to re-evaluate her life and move in new directions. Now, Annie is more interested in exploring and sharing her artistic loves. We talk about her photography and writing. She is the author of The Writer's Handbook: An Indespensibnle Grammar and Style Guide. She is also the owner of Seeds to Savor Farm where she is passionate about the legacy work of seed preservation. In this interview, we get into her thoughts about writing your legacy from the perspective of a freelance teacher, writer, and proofreader. She has a beautiful story and a love for others who are interested in preserving legacies of all kinds. Annie recommends this handbook for writers. She also loves Mary Karr's book. "If a magic genie grants you three wishes, but he won't let you wish for more wishes...wish for more genies." (shutupimtalking.com)

When the four Sidetracked Sisters got together to write, our topic was "Three Wishes". It sounds so simple. But only two of us followed the directions and came up with three.

Today we are talking about making wishes. Health, wealth, happiness, and success are at the top of most lists of this kind. But Judy goes rogue and talks about winning the lottery. Lisa is a holdout against wishing, on principle.

We get into what we'd do with money, travel, and happiness, well...that was tricky. Then we are all over the place when it comes to success.

But the way, what is the difference between a wish, a dream, and a prayer? I don't think we ever agreed on the definitions and distinctions. Maybe you have some words of wisdom that you'd like to add to the conversation. Come on over to our Facebook page for Sidetracked Sisters. Like and follow us. We'd love to here what YOU think!

"If you decide that you want to do something, find a way. Share on social. PRACTICE! You might not be an award winner or get a grammy, not a NY Times bestseller or get a Nobel prize..but you are doing. the. thing!" --Lesley McShane

I was once told something very similar. It doesn't matter how fast you run, if you get out there and move on your two feet a little faster than a walk...you are a runner. A runner is someone who runs. Nothing more, nothing less.

Today I am talking with Lesley McShane. She is a blogger, podcaster, and entrepreneur. She shares her journey with us today as she moves from film director to freelance writer to entrepreneur and the many steps in between.

Lesley and I talk about how she started blogging and the challenges writers face when putting ideas out into the world. Then we discuss podcasting. We get into how she started "The New Old You", what she's drawn to, and the fun she is having.

During this interview, we dive deep into building new habits in midlife that are invaluable for helping us create the lives we've always dreamed of. Lesley gives us her insights into meditation, mantra, gratitude, goal setting, building intention, and journaling.

My conversation with Lesley is fun and inspiring. Check her out in all the places:

"Stay fit and live long and prosper, but write your own obituary now, while you can, just in case." -Jill Conner Browne (Novelist and head Sweet Potato Queen)

Yeah. The Sidetracked Sisters aren't planning on going anywhere soon, but the topic that we agreed to write about this week was our OBITUARY! It wasn't all that easy, to be honest with you!

Today we get into all the things. Sandy, Judy, Michelle, and I talk about funeral music and Judy's burial fears. We debate having a funeral versus a "celebration of life" (or a celebration of death as Sandy thinks of it). We also discuss our ideas about burial versus cremation...and what to do with your relative's ashes after cremation.

This is perhaps not the most respectful episode. But we have fun and invite you along for the ride...

"Start writing, no matter what. The water does not flow until the faucet is turned on." --Louis L'Amour (American novelist) So many people like the idea of writing, but neglect to plant their body in a chair and get their pen moving on the page. This is NOT a problem for my guest today!

Welcome to Sidetracked Legacies episode #91.

Today I am interviewing Karla Jensen who has been writing professionally for over three decades. She has enjoyed working in radio, television, and magazine publishing. She founded and led several writers' groups. Karla was a well-known columnist for LocaLeben Magazine (a southeastern Wisconsin arts and culture publication). She has published two nonfiction books, dozens of plays as a playwright, and multiple manuscripts for rising authors.

During our time, we get into her experiences writing memoirs and how to write another's legacy story.

We talk about the value of writer's groups and she gives some tips on organizing a group.

Karla gets into some nitty-gritty details for aspiring legacy writers! She suggests and describes how to use timelines, memory maps, and the "notecard method" --for writing the barebones outline for a full-length feature film!

Inspirational resources she recommends include: On Writing by Stephen King, Writing Life Stories: How to Make Memories by Bill Roorbauch, and Julia Cameron's book The Right to Write.

American actress Lauren Bacall is quoted, "Childhood anxieties, childhood fears, never disappear completely. They fade, but not away."

Today the Sidetracked Sisters discuss memories of childhood fears. We get into the fear of the dark and clowns, creepy clowns. We go deep into Judy's fear of abandonment and how scary movies have a part to play in all of our fear stories. But...not to worry. We also get into a couple of tested and proven strategies to protect against bad dreams and goolies grabbing you while in bed at night!

During our interview, Laura quotes Hal Elrod from his book The Miricle Morning, "Remember this truth: Now matters more than any other time in your life, because its what you are doing today that is determining who you're becoming, and who you're becoming will always determine the quality and direction of your life."

Today I am talking with Laura Leigh. She is the founder of the podcast "Joyfully Raising Grands" and the "Grand Family Nation Membership". Through all of these avenues, Laura is committed to helping others who are looking for community, resources, and support in the journey of raising a grandchild.

She also has the "Joy-filled Subscription Box" for busy women who know the importance of self-care. Each box focuses on making you feel special and helping you find joy.

In our conversation, we hear about her journey to being a GRAND parent and the challenges, beauty, and blessings that that experience holds. We get into the importance of gratitude in life and while raising children. She also shares how, in serving others, we experience the most joy. She is creating a legacy of spreading and living a "joy-filled life".

I think all four Sidetracked Sisters would agree with writer Stephen King when he says, "Books and movies are like apples and oranges. They both are fruit, but completely different."

Today Judy, Sandy, Michelle, and Lisa talk about the unforgettable books and movies that have made an impression on our souls. We remember favorite childhood books, movies that made us cry, books that were read to us, and movies that still give us the heeby-jeebies (thank you Stephen King).

Not only do some of us prefer books over movies or movies over books, but we also get into which genres are our favorites. Maybe you will connect with a long-forgotten Nancy Drew mystery that you haven't thought about in forever. Or perhaps our discussion will bring up some thoughts about an old horror movie that you wish you COULD stop thinking about!

Well, we did it! The Sidetracked Sisters have a book! We got together. We wrote words on paper. We drank margaritas. We laughed and argued. We wrote more words and sorted through lots and lots of old pictures. Then Michelle did her computer magic and now we have a book of thoughts and memories to share with our loved ones.

English writer Neil Gaimon was once asked how to write a book. His response was "This is how you do it; you sit down at the keyboard and you put one word down after another until it is done. It's that easy, and that hard."

Michelle, Sandy, Judy, and I talk about our book in this episode. Then we get into our plans for the not-too-distant future. Buckle up friends, we want to take YOU along on this legacy train. We want to make it easy for you to get your own legacy project going.

Another British writer, journalist Sheeren El Feki said, "If you really want to know yourself, start by writing a book". So perhaps there is an even deeper goal to our writing. We want to share our legacy with our communities, friends, and families. We want to be seen and heard and know that our voice matters. And, we want to know ourselves...

"Don't ever feel bad for making a decision about your own life that upsets other people. You are not responsible for their happiness. You're responsible for your own happiness." The Mind's Journal

I look at this quote and think these words SOUND so good. But I don't know that I could ever really believe them. My life feels so connected to my friends and family. I want us ALL to be happy.

Today the Sidetracked Sisters are talking about decisions that they wish had been made differently.

Only Sandy had no regrets and had a hard time coming up with alternative choices

Judy wonders what her life would have been like if she would have gone to college instead of getting married right after high school.

Lisa is the only one who writes about indecision and how giving your power to another can have significant consequences.

"My life is made up of words layered upon words." --Connie Kinsey

I've always loved writing. Not the kind of writing that is assigned, not the kind that is graded. When I'm in a writing habit, I like how I watch my life for nuggets of inspiration. When I'm regularly writing, I look at my surroundings and listen to people in a more interesting way.

Today I am talking with memoirist Connie Kinsey. She is a writer who writes in a variety of ways and places. Connie is a former military brat who has put down deep roots in a converted barn on a dirt road at the top of a hill in West Virginia. For the past 18 months, she's been one of two Writers-in-Residence for the Museum of the American Military Family. According to my Google search, we shouldn't call it an "accident" when a car collides with another car. Government officials and safety advocates want us to use the phrase, "car crash" because they believe that the "accident" trivializes the fact that m;ost are caused by human error or negligence and are preventable.

In our discussion today, we get into our memorable crashes. Three of us were in cars where someone fell asleep, and I was an inattentive driver. Fortunately, non of our stories involve any human casualties...only some crunched-up cars and one destroyed deer crossing sign.

I've always been the kind of person who wants to limit mindless, activities that keep me as a consumer, on the sidelines, a watcher. I prefer to live a more active and creative life. I feel good about the day when I've contributed to the world--whether by weeding my garden, walking the dos, writing a blog entry, or coaching a client.

"Everyone can rock a bikini, swimsuit, unicorn onesie...whatever floats your boat. If you wear it with confidence, you will look hot." --Iskra Lawrence

Now I would love to believe this "plus-size" fitness model! Ms. Lawrence is gorgeous at 5'9" and 194 pounds!!! But...(sigh)

The Sidetracked Sisters got together this week to write and talk about swimsuits and body image. It was interesting how we seem to not really like our bodies--lower weight NOR higher weight. Judy was the only one who has ever been comfortable in a swimsuit.

We also got into the lessons we learned, early in life, about beauty in general.

So, you do know what it takes to have a "beach body" right???

  1. You have a body. 2. You go to the beach.

I believe this, but I would like bring the focus to the second part of Iskra's quote. Confidence. Aubrey Hepburn also commented on this little caveat when she said, "The most attractive accessory a girl can have is confidence."

I love this quote by Samuel Johnson, "The true measure of a man is how he treats someone who can do him absolutely no good.

It makes me think about the beautiful people in my life and those who have come and gone...for a variety of reasons. But those who have a lasting and deep positive impression have treated me in a way that made me feel unique and seen

Today we are talking about a memorable man in our lives. Three of the Sidetracked Sisters talk about their dads and one talks about a boyfriend from high school.

We talk about HOW these men made us feel special, and how they impressed or surprised us. Sometimes we recognized traits that we found appealing in our boyfriends ar the same qualities in our father. We then wrap things up by discussing how these men showed affection and made us feel...taken care of.

"If you're going to live, leave a legacy. Make a mark on the world that can't be erased." --Maya Angelou

Legacy writing is a creative process that we HOPE our kids and grandkids will appreciate someday down the road! Today's guest, my cousin, Marcia Hero, isn't recording her life using only a pen and paper or a laptop. Instead, she is a visual artist who uses a variety of mediums to do this.

Artists, writers, journalers, and storytellers, are each making a legacy in their own way. What stories do we have to tell? What lessons are we feeling the need to share? How do we want to be remembered?

In today's episode, Marcia talks about her creative journey. We get into the importance and value she places on the small community she has with 3 other artists who together call themselves "The Martini Girls". She talks about art journaling as a way to play, to express yourself, and as a chronicle of your life.

Or, maybe you are a novaturient kind of person who desires or seeks effective change in your life, behavior, or situation.

Perhaps you would describe yourself simply as a philocalist--a lover of beauty...one who finds and appreciates beauty in all things.

"Stay committed to your decisions but, stay flexible in your approach." --Tom Robbins (American novelist)

The Sidetracked Sisters definitely believe in the philosophy of flexibility. My sister, aunt, mom and I have been writing together for many years. Then, just 4 months ago, we decided to start this podcast to let more people know about "Legacy Writing". To do this, we would write together, and then everyone would have an interview about that week's writing.

But, it didn't turn out as juicy as we had hoped. The camaraderie, the snarkiness, and the disagreements were missing!!! Mom would regularly be wanting to rebut and Judy would want to clarify an idea. However, none of that was shared with you!

So...we are changing things up. We are going to be moving to 2 podcasts a week. One will be the four Sidetracked Sisters getting together as a group to share, talk, laugh, question, disagree and just explore ideas together. The other will be where we talk to friends and experts about journaling, memoir writing, and storytelling to help us share our stuff in a more interesting and engaging way.

Here is our first four-person discussion about this change...

"The best bucket lists are simple and profound. Actually, I believe that the best things in life are both of those things, too." --Julie Schooler (author of Bucket List Blueprint )

I think Julie and Judy must be soulmates from another life or time. This quote really speaks to Judy's mix of uncomplicated and serious items. She has both kinds on her checked items bucket list and on her current, in-progress list.  Judy has always (and continues) valued variety...from travel to learning and daily habits to relationships.

Today we are talking about "Bucket Lists". Michelle already has a couple of items crossed off her current list (which is unsurprising). We explore the details of the remaining 9 bucket list items and discuss our next dream board making time--no sarcasm or ambiguity at all!!!

"The moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves too. Whatever you think you can do, or believe you can do, begin it. Action has magic, power, and grace." --Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

In this episode, Michelle and I talk about goals, bucket lists, and dream boards. We get into the fact that sometimes we don't know the how, why, or when of a dream--but it is there. Our mom, Sandy, is an excellent example of someone with a short and simple bucket list with one major item...a cottage on Lake Michigan.

I don't think a bucket list needs to be long, but really, the fewer items there are, the more important each is.

We figured out that my mom and Sara were friends for about 6 years. There were days, weeks, months, that turned into years where mom was trying to help her friend. Then one day, she had enough. Living through, and ultimately ending, that relationship was. very. difficult.

This week the Sidetracked Sisters are writing about our "Greatest Challenge".

In this episode, Sandy and I talk about a toxic friendship that colored our lives many years ago. We reminisce about specific events and talk about how the relationship ended (and the relief we all felt when it was over). Sandy had very few resources when she was struggling through these events. Today, a quick google search can bring up dozens of articles, quizzes, therapists, and coaches. If you find yourself in a relationship where you are struggling to back out safely, here are a couple of places to begin educating yourself:

"You're always one choice away from changing your life." --Marcy Blochowiak (author)

But no one ever said that making that choice would be easy.

And no one said that changing your life wouldn't be scary!

This week, the Sidetracked Sisters are writing and talking about our "Greatest Challenge".

Throughout my life, I have always questioned, "What am I going to be when I grow up?" Although I've pivoted a couple of times in my career life, teaching was pretty stable for me. Right now, however, I'm comparing my life to skydiving. I've left the ground behind and made the jump.

Exciting? Yes.

Scary? Hell YESSS!!!

"Freeing yourself was one thing. Claiming ownership of that freed self is another." --Toni Morrison

Michelle began her self-discovery story last week when she talked about being a chameleon throughout her life. This week, we talk and write about "Our Greatest Challenge". We get into her separation and divorce story. The book "The 5 Love Languages" is a real eye-opener for her. Then, we begin working on her self-identity and what she wants out of life. This sets us up for next week's writing and interviews about our bucket lists...

I don't know what wise soul uttered those profound words--but this is the beginning, middle, and end of healing.

Today Judy and I talk about our "Greatest Challenge". We discuss her sister Kathy's illness and how it affected her development. We get into resilience, flexibility, and Judy's search for self. Then, at the end of our interview, I have Judy retell a story about her sister that has always freaked me about a bit!

"Be yourself, everyone else is already taken." --Gilbert Perreira

Throughout her life, Michelle has struggled with being a chameleon. She's tried to be what she though others wanted her to be or who she felt others NEEDED her to be. Over the years of this, it got to be that nothing felt...real. Music, food, activities. Others had favorites and opinions, not Michelle. She was willing to go along for whatever ride you were on.

In this episode, we discuss how Michelle developed a chameleon personality and how she is NOW learning to be her true self.

Check out this writing from last year. Its crazy how this is obviously an important theme for her!!!

"Every time we start thinking we are the center of the universe, the universe turns around and says with a slightly distracted air, 'I'm sorry, what'd you say your name was again?'" --Margaret Maron (Amerian mystery writer)

Learning that she WASN'T the center of the universe was a lesson that Judy learned from a therapist when she was in her twenties. It's not an easy lesson to learn and it takes many of us time and practice to fully understand the concept. But, according to this article in Inc., studies show that when you get this, you're more likely to face your fear, speak out, and stand up for your opinions!

Knowing that you. are. NOT the center of the universe leads to independence and the release of people-pleasing.

In this episode, Judy and I talk about therapy, aging, life after retirement, and how much fun we are having--and therapeutic it is--doing Legacy Writing together.

Personally... screen time (whether on the tv, computer, or phone) is NOT where I want to spend my life. I don't place a high value on it...what about you?!?

Today Judy and I talk about how screen time eats away at our lives. We discuss how tv watching Netflix binging, and Facebook scrolling can be buffering activities. Then we get into something called habit stacking to take back control over our time and move toward what we really value.

This week, we are talking about Memorable Advice. Sandy received (at least) four profound pieces of advice that have served her well"

"Good idea: Finding Easter eggs on Easter.

Bad idea: Finding Easter eggs on Christmas." --Jack Handey (American comedian)

At my house, we hide plastic Easter eggs outside. Unfortunately, those eggs may be found months, if not years later. Sometimes this results in... deteriorated contents (to say the least).

In this episode, Judy and I talk about some disgusting forms that money can take, the perils of seasonal gifts for a spring holiday in Wisconsin, and the changes I've experienced in egg decorating and Easter candy/gifts.

In the end, we get into a couple of recipes--one for Gin slush that sounds A-MAZ-ING! "Sidetracked Slush" anyone?

We also plan a fun marshmallow bunny-making activity that you might want to try with your family.

Here is our "Sidetracked Slush" recipe:

  • 8 cups of water divided
  • 5 black tea bags or green tea bags
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 (12 ounces) containers of frozen lemonade concentrate thawed
  • 2-4 cups of gin
  • lemon-lime soda or tonic water, for serving
  • lime wedges, for garnish

Bring 3 cups of water to boil. Add tea bags and steep for 3 to 5 minutes. Discard bags and stir in sugar until dissolved.

In a 1-gallon plastic ice cream pail, combine the remaining 5 cups of water, sweetened tea, frozen juice concentrates, and gin. Freeze at least 8 hours or overnight. The more gin you use, the longer the slush takes to freeze.

To serve, fill a glass ½ full. Top with lemon-lime soda or tonic water. Garnish with lime wedges.

Well, somewhere along the next few years, I heard that a child's personality was formed and solidified by their 5th birthday.

As she reached that milestone, I remember feeling sad and guilty that I had really screwed up this poor kid!!!

We touch on her dad's political views and his very patriarchal approach to his wife and daughter taking care of him. Then we wrap up and laugh about the gory details of rubbing his feet and how he considered boxer shorts, a t-shirt, and hat appropriate outerwear on the weekends.

Do you have a relative that everyone hates to love? Well, in Michelle's family it was Uncle Lloyd. He was an eccentric, grumpy, old, fart of a man. In today's episode, Michelle and I talk about a "Most Interesting Family Member". We reminisce about summer memories she made when visiting him during several childhood summers. Michelle lets us in on how she used Uncle Lloyd's passion for clowning to traumatize her family. Then, we touch on Lloyd's love of living in the buff!

You've heard of tall, dark, and handsome, well, my first REAL kiss was with someone tall, blond, and skinny--but I was looking so forward to that first smooch!!! (We were just kids.) In today's episode, Judy and I talk about kissing. I share my legacy writing and we discuss what happens when the wrong boy catches me in "Boys Chase Girls". I recount the details of my first REAL kiss and how we found it interesting that some of us Sidetracked Sisters were more boy-crazy while others were more shy or uninterested. Then we briefly touch on the sweet kisses of our children.

Lots of us have memories of playing chase games between the boys and girls during recess in Elementary school. In Michelle's memory, it was a sweet memory due to a slow running boy! Today, I talk with my sister about kissing. She shares her legacy writing, and we reminisce about recess. She also shares a memory of how a first kiss can affect your mood...maybe even your personality. Finally, we discuss the classic move where a boy does the big arm stretch before casually putting his arm over your shoulders for the first time.

As a kid, I knew of the game called "Spin the Bottle" but never played it myself. My mom, however, played and was BUSTED playing an even more intense childhood kissing game. In this episode, I talk with my mom about girl parties! (It gets interesting when boys are invited in through a basement window.) Somehow, we transition into the controversy of dating someone from a different Christian denomination and then move into memories from catechism class.

Have you ever heard someone relate the story of a perfect first kiss? Or, have you perhaps experienced the perfect first kiss yourself? In this episode, Judy and Lisa talk about kissing. She shares her legacy writing and tells about (arguably) the most movie-worthy first kiss I have ever heard. She also shares a disgusting story about chewing gum and about how her mom and dad were so sweetly romantic--on a daily basis--with one another.

Have you heard the phrase, "If your dog is fat, YOU aren't getting enough exercise"? Well, in this episode, Sandy and I talk about how her dog motivates her to exercise. We learn why Sandy hates to make resolutions and then we discuss a bit of the history behind the "Sidetracked" part of our name.

In this conversation between Lisa and Judy, we talk about committing to going back to work after 2 years of retirement, how resolutions sometimes seem to backfire, and the idea of using the New Year to celebrate the previous year's successes. Judy references two books, The Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren and The Fred Factor by Mark Sandborn , that have shaped her thinking about resolutions.

Judy and Lisa talk about New Year's Resolutions. We discuss what it takes to commit to a course of action and then follow through...step by step...even when that process feels like a herd of turtles stampeding through peanut butter. I share my word for 2022 based on some of the work I did after reading Danielle LaPorte's book The Desire Map. Then, at the end, I give a sneak peek into a few projects that I've just begun.

Every week the Sidetracked Sisters get together to write. We are always amazed at how different our opinions are on any given topic. And our opinions about "New Year's Resolutions" are certainly diverse! In this episode, Michelle reads her writing and then we talk about her annual resolution to get healthy, drink more water, and lose weight.

This is the fourth and final installment in our writings on the topic "Who am I?" Each of the Sidetracked Sisters has taken a different spin on the theme and hope we've inspired you to get going on your own Legacy writing journey. In this episode, we talk about the impact that a short cartoon video called "Inside the Killer Whale Matriarchy" had on our sense of purpose. We discuss how a matriarch--the female head of a family--can, and SHOULD, have a dynamic impact in her family and with those she loves.

The first writing topic for the Sidetracked Sisters was "Who Am I?" In today's interview with my mom, she reads her Legacy writing and then we go more into depth about her early childhood. "Legacy" work is so fun to do with relatives. This episode proves how rich and rewarding writing and sharing is between a mother and her daughter.

My sister Michelle and I have very different writing styles. She is analytical and writes her one and only draft using her computer. I like to use colorful pens in a journal and tend to write much more flowery. One thing you will notice as you listen to this episode is that our voices are VERY similar! I love writing and talking with her and excited for you to listen in as we have our first conversation about her writing this week.

The Sidetracked Sisters have been getting together to write and drink margaritas for several years. We publish our writings on our blog called--"Sidetracked Sisters"! Now, we are inviting others to participate in the journey of writing about life. This is called "Legacy Writing". We know that as midlife women, we have thoughts, opinions, and stories that we need to share. We want to leave the lessons that we've learned as a legacy to our children and grandchildren. The Sidetracked Sisters believe that women have a deep need to belong, to be known, to be remembered, and to make a difference. In this trailer, Lisa introduces the podcast. Each week, we will introduce a new topic, write and share our ideas, and invite others to put their thoughts down on paper. So, come on...grab a notebook, journal, or laptop and join us as we write down the stories of our lives.
