The Lord’s Table, Part 2
"The enacting of trying to become like Christ, that’s where love happens in the Triune God in this world. We’re just broken and so we can do it so partially, we misread so much of what’s going on, we don’t see with the eyes of Jesus so much of the time, and we don’t speak with the voice of Jesus. And God’s like… 'I know! So come to this table and just be reminded that actually my life is the life I give you.'"
[2:00] Humans are not the agents of grace, God is, and that’s what the table is about.
[3:40] Examination of yourself should not be individualized, but held in relationship with others.
[5:50] We are still growing into the conformity of what it looks like to be truly human. We still have to let go of the things that Jesus just wants to kill. These things are killing you and killing the community, because you’re identity is being formed around stuff that is so transient, so meaningless.
[8:28] What table are you eating at? If we want to eat and drink the life of the world, which is actually death, it’ll kill you. It will destroy our souls, it will destroy our relationships, it will destroy our lives, to eat and drink of a world that’s broken in Jesus name.
[11:15] At the table we are taking the stuff of creation and eating a meal that’s also happening in heaven. The Spirit join together Jesus hosting the meal and the remembrance of a cruciform life.
[14:28] God has already told us that none of us can earn being at this table. God is the righteous one.
[16:30] Jesus the Bread of Life
[17:25] Psalm 110 - If you don’t have the ascended Jesus in your sightline all the time, you don’t know who you are and you don’t know what God is doing. We can’t get stuck looking backwards at Jesus death and resurrection as some event back then. We must look at the One who is wearing the marks of His wounds from that death into resurrected glory that has literally brought humanity into the life of God.

[23:20] The demonic tells lies as the truth. If you are part of the story of Christ, participating in Him, the old constructs of the world can’t be included; you can’t enact a lie.
[27:30] Letters were read out loud in community. You can’t privatize this message about the Table. You are united with Christ… so what the heck is going on? There is no Second Baptist in Corinth… why are you divided?

- Proclaimed word - The church gathers around the living and written Word but then speaks to the world.
[7:20] If you are missing any of the three “Words”, it creates dysfunction, whether heresy, idolatry, or image-management.

We will develop either as gnostics (elevated ideas), legalists (tied to the text), or performers (sounding good, but saying little). [9:40] There are so many forms of Christianity that fight with one another because they recognized problems in others but can’t see the log in their own eye. Barth doesn’t want others to be Barth-ians, he just wants people to think well out of the person of Christ and keep coming back to challenge one another on that basis, not merely defending our own position.
[12:50] How can the church be the church that Jesus envisioned? By moving from a monologue of a preacher or a catalog of rules to a divine dialogue with God and a polylogue with others.

[1:55] What does it mean to lead out of resurrection?
[3:00] Resurrection requires death; death always proceeds resurrection. The Apostle Peter experienced a falling and rising over and over again.
[5:20] As I abide in Christ, my daily failures are restored in His resurrection glory today.
[6:30] If I’m thinking about leading from a place of life, that means I need to be connected to the source of life.
[7:25] Point people to God and make room for people’s gifts.
[8:55] Living according to the Scripture: Jesus is alive. Everything He said is true. Everything about the Hebrew Bible about Jesus is true.

[1:10] Relationship dynamics within a church display practical gospel theology more than any creed or belief statement. How do we work together to empower one another rather than simply expect things from one another?
[3:54] The idea that we can just learn the Bible without applying truths deeply in our heart and then except to have a healthy church environment, is just false. That’s emotional immaturity.
[5:27] Discipleship looks like sitting with someone you disagree with, to stop mind reading and assuming you know the motives of another person's heart.
[8:12] The truth of family and forgiveness means that those closest to you will hurt you, you will hurt them, and that healing and love can come from the pain.
[11:00] The real measurables of ministry involve seeing a community and individuals growing in their ability to love people who are not like them, to reconcile with people who they are in tension with, and to care for people who are deeply under privilege and outside our social circles.
[13:50] God working out His mercy through abuse, divorce, and cultural differences.
[20:05] The idea of mental health can’t be disconnected from the other aspects of what it means for us to be human.
[23:20] When we trust that God has blessed us with one another, that there is a reason we are put in this place together, we can press more into God’s will and purpose for our lives.
[25:51] God has called you into a very sacred and beautiful work. He has called you not because you are equipped, but because he can and will equip you. Submit your fears and insecurities before the Lord and with a trusted community.

- Surrounded only by those who affirm you without any constructive feedback
- A rebuke goes deeper into a man of understanding than a hundred blows into a fool. (Proverbs 17:10)
- More value in your staff's productivity than their spiritual/character formation
- An over-involvement in controlling other people’s decision or direction
- Tendency to shade the truth about yourself, your weaknesses, your struggles
- Very few close intimate relationships; a superficial image of vulnerability

- Consistent intimacy with Christ in silence/solitude
- Every pastor/leader should be in a counseling, coaching, or mentoring relationship
- Accountability in order to truly see yourself

[5:50] As humans we want to be with those who we share commonalities with. But sin has not only affected individuals, but tribes and communities that point them away from God’s grace and truth.
[8:50] Tribalism prioritizes insiders at the expense of outsiders. Luke 9 and the disciples calling down fire on the Samaritans.
[10:00] Those we once wanted to kill, the gospel calls us to worship with them in Christ.
[10:48] - “Our country needs healing, our country needs forgiveness, our country needs hope, but we don’t have anything inside our nation to provide that, but Jesus does.”
[12:21] - A point of anxiety in a culture of tribalism is: am I going to say something on the wrong side of the crowd that will come after our reputation, our job, our friend groups.
[16:11] In society currently, it doesn't seem like we are pursuing common good, but some form of “victory” where we want to embarrass people and win in order to make a point.
[17:05] Courage is not a value in and of itself; it is not to be done for its own sake. Otherwise, courage will become belligerent or rude.Jesus wants us to be wise as serpent and innocent as doves. The Prophet Daniel was both courageous and winsome.
[18:45] Courage is not an excuse to forget the fruit of the Spirit.
[19:24] The Elephant (our desires, what we want) and the Rider (our rational faculty) metaphor
- Who is steering who? We tend to do what we want to do and then find reasons to justify our decisions.

- We use the politician, the preacher, or the prosecutor to justify our desires
[24:23] When proper objective truth is lost as a possibility in a culture, it’s hard to persuade one another towards something good.
[26:30] Many don’t trust institutions anymore because of selfish abuse of authority, but that doesn’t mean Truth isn’t out there.
[27:45] We can escape the partisan, self-orientated tribalism by joining Jesus’ tribe. He tells us to think about and make sacrifices for those outside the tribe. Everyone is invited into Jesus’ tribe to follow the true King.
[29:35] Take your enemy out for coffee. (Don’t poison it!) Get to know the person beyond their politics.
[33:14] Work through the awkwardness. You don't need to agree on everything to work together on some things.
[34:08] Concluding words: Jesus is King. He doesn’t want to be president of the United States. That would be a huge demotion for him. His throne is eternal, he’s not looking for a 4 year term.

[7:32] The good news of church decline is that we’re beginning to ask different types of questions.

[13:40] You, on your own, even if you are a “super Christian” are not the church; none of us are.
[15:40] The world is crying out for people who are pointing themselves at the common good of a particular place, who have a narrative, a story that say: forgive each other 70x7, bear one another’s burdens, by all means possible stay put and be shaped by that place even as you are seeking to shape it.

[18:05] A gift of the “seeker-sensitive” movement, was trying to create a hospitable space for the other.
[19:00] When there is not a pastoral imagination to aspire to, we’re in a different kind of hurt than the celebrity pastor idol. We do need people to look up to in a healthy way.

[22:22] Rather than get people to come into the church in order to go out, look for whole disciples who are out there living the Jesus was in the neighborhood and use the gathering to be encouraging, celebrating, lamenting that Kingdom Life happening together.
[24:01] The Holy Spirit is the “how” to God’s Dream. We need to trust the Holy Spirit in us and out ahead of us. We join the Spirit’s work as opposed to delivering the Holy Spirit.
[25:20] Without the Spirit, the outcome is either shame or pride.

[30:20] Appreciative Inquiry
[33:18] If the heart of God’s mission is reconciliation and renewal, and if the church is neither reconciled nor one, then Christian mission requires the pursuit of church unity.
[35:55] Disasters reveal things. Social capital, the trust between people, gets revealed, not when things go good, but when things go bad.
[40:45] God holds all things. We aren’t, nor need to be, the heroes of the story. Rest in that reality regardless of your success or failure in this moment.
“We are called to ministry, but unless we do it God’s way, with God’s power, using God’s word, God’s gospel, for God’s glory, we’re going to go down some rabbit trails that are going to lead to discouragement and early burn-out.”

[21:10] Is our preaching alive? Water can come in liquid form and refresh people or you can serve them a block of ice. If we re-preach a message, we must rely even more on the Holy Spirit.
[23:10] Living with a predominant sense of failure, even with a “big church”, because there is so much more need. A godly burden motivates ministry.
[24:45] Everything is going to disappear, but people. 1 Thessalonians 2:18-20 - For we wanted to come to you—indeed I, Paul, tried again and again—but Satan obstructed us. For what is our hope, our joy, or the crown in which we will glory in the presence of our Lord Jesus when he comes? Is it not you? Indeed, you are our glory and joy.

[29:30] Acts 6 - appointing servants so that those leaders at the core of the Church can have the priority of not just doing actions, but staying tuned in on what the Lord is saying.
[32:45] The Spirit doesn’t just speak to one person; how does communal discernment work?
[35:40] Manifold wisdom gives a bigger picture of God’s glory and God’s story; listening to God doesn’t mean you do the talking.

[15:14] Theories come from the cultural context and what we feel we need from God ends up being discovered in the scriptures.
[16:48] We need to be less afraid and more open. Fear is the root of our sinfulness because we lack trust in God.
[18:00] We know more than Martin Luther did because we’re standing on 500 years of history.
[19:24] We want not just knowledge of atonement, but the benefits, the effect, the possibilities through it.
[23:10] The way we speak in disagreement can show us our reception of the atonement; it is to be lived in, not just talked about.
[26:05] Personally experiencing the binding and loosing of the atonement?
[28:01] Christ’s forgiveness helps us to forgive when we don’t know how to forgive.

[33:50] A predisposition to non-violence is a misnomer. Our humility about violence has to do with being wrong with violence as humans, but God is capable of far more.

“Jeremiah swings back and forth like a betrayed human. Hosea, five times, swings back and forth literally like a betrayed human and says this is the heart of a betrayed God. If we can’t access that God, who is betrayed, with His heart tones, I think it fails to give the church license to express itself and light tones. The heart of God comes out all over the old testament, and so commonly in poetry, and we’ve industrialized our way into the place where we don’t need that poetry in our heads. And the reality is we are missing it. I’m just grief stricken for a church that doesn’t know how it God feels about it because it can’t read the tones that he’s written to them in.

Season 1 starts January 4,2022 - released every other week | There's so much pressure in our world to draw lines, to pick sides, and see everything only from our own perspective. It's really easy to get caught in our cultural echo chambers.
