City Cast Boise is the daily news podcast that connects us to the city we love. With a companion newsletter, it’s the place where curiosity and passion for Boise meet. Every weekday morning, our hosts will introduce you to your neighbors — from newcomers to born-and-raised Boiseans. It’s like eavesdropping on a great conversation overheard at your favorite downtown coffee shop, except in this case you’re invited to join in. We’ll engage with you online and on the podcast, with stories that spark passion and delight — but sometimes also frustration and anger. With a clear-eyed vision of the challenges and triumphs of our rapidly changing Boise, the podcast will make you feel more connected to this city we share.

One thing about Boise: we love our local craft beer. But with more than 20 breweries and counting in the Treasure Valley, the options can be kind of overwhelming. What’s the best place to grab a pint and watch a game? How about the most delicious meal and IPA combo? And where can you get snobby and enjoy the subtleties of your next barrel-aged stout? Today, lead producer Frankie Barnhill is getting the scoop from contributor Heath Druzin, who — when he’s not covering extremist politics — can be found at Barbarian Brewing.

We’re not afraid to admit it—Boise’s shopping scene needs a serious revamp. Our closets are hurting! Local thrift stores are filling up with fast fashion items and the best pieces are often being re-sold online. And when it comes to local stores, they don’t always have what we’re looking for.
Today on the podcast, host Frankie Barnhill rants with local fashion-obsessives Kymm Cornelison and Evelyn Avitia about our lack of shopping options in the city. Pssst…hey Nordstrom. Are you listening? We need you.

Through this video-sharing platform, she’s gained 115,000 followers, with 6 million likes and counting.
But it turns out that for a long time, Lindsay held the same political beliefs as the people she’s critiquing. So today, Host Frankie Barnhill chats with Lindsay (@socialistylawkward) about her big shift and how it’s changed her life forever.

Today on the show, she talks with Frankie Barnhill about why representation in our newsrooms matters and how this internship program is carving out a path for the next generation of reporters.

Are bike bars the most obnoxious or entertaining Boise experience? We’re sure you’ve seen those loud spectacles cruising downtown, usually playing top hits while people dress up in their favorite party theme and whoop it up, pedaling from bar to bar!
Even though bike bars may look a little different than they did a year ago, with no open containers or late night rides, Pedals and Pints driver Camden Gallagher wants to make it known that bike bars actually serve a greater purpose in the community. So today, he takes on the challenge of convincing Host Frankie Barnhill to join in on the fun. Will Host Frankie Barnhill book her own bike bar experience? Or will she come down hard on boycotting this downtown menace?

Boise’s music scene has evolved a lot in a decade. When Treefort Music Fest started in 2012, it was this very homegrown thing from a newly formed company called Duck Club, with mostly local music fans checking out mostly local and regional bands. Today, Treefort is still homegrown — but it has matured a lot while helping to put our music scene on the map. Every March, the festival brings thousands of people to downtown Boise — many from out of state — to see indie bands from around the world.
But there's a new festival from Duck Club Entertainment that's truly made for us locals. Host Frankie Barnhill chats with Duck Club CEO Eric Gilbert all about the new Flipside Fest, which is going down this weekend (Sept. 23-25) in Garden City. They also chat about what makes this moment better than ever for Boise’s music scene.

We may call ourselves The City of Trees, but let’s face it, we live in a desert! Isn’t it time to start landscaping like it? Today, producer Jennifer Jerrett is talking with Anni Jack, the Adult Education Coordinator at the Idaho Botanical Garden, about why we should be thinking about low-water landscapes. But this conversation isn’t just about plants. It’s about who we are. And Anni says something about Boise’s identity that we can’t get out of our heads.
Looking for resources and inspo for your own low-water xeriscape project? Check out Anni’s “100 Plants” from the Idaho Botanical Garden, “Water Wise: Native Plants for Intermountain Landscapes,” or the BLM’s comprehensive “Native Garden Guide for SW Idaho.” Plants are available at several local nurseries including xeriscaping specialists Draggin’ Wing Farm or online through High Country Gardens.

18-year-old Boise High senior Shiva Rajbhandari loves to ski and runs track and cross country. And as of last week’s Boise school board election, he’s going to have a new project for his free time — helping to shape the future of our public schools. That’s right: a current student is about to be on the school board — a first for our city.
Journalist Heath Druzin chats with host Frankie Barnhill about this and other results from our last election. Plus: how far-right groups continue to target school boards and libraries in the Treasure Valley.
And later in the podcast: have you gotten your bivalent COVID-19 booster yet? After a slight delay the shots can be found at a bunch of places around the valley, with appointments-a-plenty. Boise has a long history of punk music, from DIY basement house shows to unforgettable sets at Neurolux. And the genre is alive and well in 2022 — thanks in part to The French Tips. Angela Heileson, Rachel Couch and Ivy Merrell formed the band a few years ago and released their latest album “All the Rage” this spring. But the album almost never saw the light of day; it was delayed for a long time because of COVID-19.
As the band joins Built to Spill on tour this month and prepares to play the first Flipside Fest in Garden City, host Frankie Barnhill chats with Ivy Merrell about this moment in Boise’s music scene.
(Here’s the songs we featured from The French Tips: Halo, Rearview and Patient.)

We’re two weeks into our state’s abortion ban. But you know what? We’re tired of hearing soundbites from politicians. We want to hear from the people this actually affects: young folks. We all know the story of Robin Hood. You know — stealing from the rich to help the poor and all that. Well in our city, we have Rocky Detwiler — aka the Boise River Robin Hood. Fancy phones, expensive sunglasses, lost car keys: the River Robin Hood has found (and often returned) it all.
Today on City Cast Boise, we learn how he earned his nickname, and find out the strangest thing he’s found underwater.

When was the first time you visited the Sawtooths? Maybe it was a relaxing camping trip with friends along a cold mountain creek or the most challenging solo hike you’ve ever done — rewarded with a stop at a clear blue alpine lake — the place holds so many memories for people in Boise. Now 50 year after the Sawtooth National Recreation Area was created by Congress, is the area too popular for its own good? How do we protect a place we all love so much?
Boise State Public Radio reporter Rachel Cohen has been digging into the past, present and potential future of the recreation area and has lots to share on the topic.

What’s one thing that unites the people of Boise and Salt Lake City? We’ll give you a hint – we dip our famous Idaho potatoes in it. Yep, it’s fry sauce! This mayo and ketchup based sauce comes in a variety of flavors and we can’t seem to get enough. But where did fry sauce originate and why are we so obsessed with it? We have the answers.
Ali Vallarta joins us to challenge our self-proclaimed title as the state with the best fry sauce. She’s the host of City Cast Salt Lake and makes it clear we have some serious competition. But not so fast, SLC! Producer Evelyn Avitia and host Frankie Barnhill remain unfazed because they know we have perfected the recipe.

2020 was the final nail in the coffin for the Boise GreenBike program. The bike share — run by Valley Regional Transit — was popular at first but didn’t have enough support to survive COVID-19.
Now, VRT has a new pedal assisted program: Vall-eBike. A fleet of 50 e-bikes are on the streets now, locked up at pre-existing GreenBike stations in between rides. So what lessons did we learn from the previous bike share closure, and could e-bikes get more people out of their cars longterm? We’re chatting with VRT’s Dave Fotsch to learn more.

In a town that loves meat and potatoes, we know finding plant-based options can be tough. Lex shares her tried and tested recommendations of the best vegan pizza and burgers, and makes a claim for Boise’s best breakfast burrito.

Boise housing market has been out of control (and out of reach) for several years now, with the median home price hitting an all-time high in May of over $600K. But as Idaho Statesman reporter Paul Schwedelson tells us, things are starting to shift. Houses have been sitting on the market longer, prices have been dropping and at least one major homebuilder forecasts $400K as a reasonable price for new homes in the near future. So can wannabe buyers who were shut out in 2020 and 2021 finally afford to buy a roof over their head?
Open your Zillow app and dive in with him and City Cast Boise host Frankie Barnhill to learn what’s up with our wild world of home buying. And, tell us your story! Are you in the market to buy? How’s it’s going? Leave us a voicemail and we may share your story in a future episode: 208-546-9485.

The Boise Soul Food Festival is coming home this Saturday. After a nearly 5-year hiatus — and a forced break because of COVID-19 — organizers are bringing the event back to Julia Davis Park where it happened for about 20 years.
But as festival founder Shari Baber tells us, this event is about so much more than delicious gumbo, catfish, mac n’ cheese, and sweet potato pie. It’s about celebrating Black culture and supporting Black-owned businesses in our mostly white city.
Boise Soul Food Festival is open to the public Saturday at Julia Davis Park from 11 a.m.-8 p.m., and organizers expect about 7,000 people to trickle in and out of the park throughout the day.

With reproductive rights up for debate in the Idaho Supreme Court and a Department of Justice lawsuit against the state’s abortion trigger ban pending — there’s a lot on the line, especially for activists in our community. Are they OK?
Today, we’re talking with local activist Leta Harris Neustaedter. She’s a therapist, a musician and an experienced community organizer (among many other titles). What Leta has to say is going to shift how you think about being an activist — or anyone devoted to creating change in Boise — while not burning out.

Today on the podcast, we’re talking with Miguel Almeida, painter, digital artist, and muralist. He reflects on his experience as a first generation Mexican American artist living in Idaho, and why representation in art matters.
You can see Miguel’s murals, “Un Mundo Mejor y Más Verde es Posible” and “Raíces” at Zion Warne Studios and Visionkit Studio in Garden City on Chinden and 33rd St. Also, check out his Instagram!

Idaho’s abortion bans are having their day in court, with Planned Parenthood challenging two laws — a trigger ban passed in 2020, and a Texas-style ban passed in 2022. Abortion rights advocates are bracing for the Idaho Supreme Court’s decision to come soon after Wednesday’s hearing in downtown.
It’s been a complicated story to follow, with lots of legal twists and turns along the way. That’s why we’re talking with Boise State Public Radio reporter James Dawson. He helps clear up confusion about the legal process, explains the arguments at play in the lawsuits, and covers what might come after the court makes its decision.
Also on the show, we cover how to watch the 10:00 a.m. Wednesday hearing online, and give a heads-up about a rally for reproductive rights at the statehouse later that day.

We know Boise is nicknamed the City of Trees. But how deep do those roots go?
Today on the podcast, our producer Jennifer Jerrett tells us about the City of Trees Challenge which aims to get 100,000 urban trees planted by 2030. We chat about the city’s climate goals and how homeowners can contribute to our tree canopy with some drought tolerant options. And, we learn what to do (and what not to do) after Jennifer’s own backyard beautifying with some new trees this year.
Later on the show, we talk about a map that shows where our canopy cools things the most and the clean air and water effects our urban forest has on the community.
Interested in participating in the challenge or getting a free tree? Start here, and learn more from the Treasure Valley Canopy Network. Oh, and be sure to check here before you start digging!

Folks, Boise is sweltering. The National Weather Service is forecasting triple digit heat for the next week and we may break some record highs, in yet another indication that climate change is here. Most of us can retreat to our air conditioned homes and shady backyards to cool down. But for our unhoused neighbors, escaping the heat is a daily struggle that can have deadly outcomes. So Interfaith Sanctuary Executive Director Jodi Peterson-Stigers is here to tell us how we can help. Plus, we talk about the six cooling shelters established by the City of Boise this summer, and why climate change is a topic that comes up all the time for guests at her shelter.
Interfaith Sanctuary needs donations from this list delivered to their location at 1620 W River St, Boise, ID 83702 between 8:00 a.m.-8:00 p.m.:
Sunscreen
Popsicles
Water bottles
Sun hats
Flip flops

One of the things on everyone’s summer bucket list is floating the Boise River. And we all have a story about it. That time you lost your brand new iPhone. Or the day your friend popped the pool floaty. Or when you watched your flip flops go sailing downstream without you. Even though tubing the river is pretty straightforward, it’s not without its complications. That’s why we’re talking with Robbie Sosin from Ada County Parks and Waterways. Robbie’s got lots of pro tips on how to float the river with style: what to wear…where to park…even where you can pick up some great river gear in town. And speaking of pro tips, be sure to subscribe to our newsletter, where you’ll get the scoop on the city delivered to your inbox every weekday morning. You should stay in touch with us on Twitter and Instagram, too. And for more great summertime survival tips, listen to our “How To Beat the Boise Heat” episode from earlier this month. For the first time in almost 30 years, Congress has done something to try to address gun violence and mass shootings. But our guest today has a wake-up call when it comes to the legislation that passed earlier this summer. Journalist and podcaster Heath Druzin follows the gun rights movement in Idaho and around the country. He says before any meaningful debate or change can occur, we need to face the fact that there are 400 million firearms already in circulation in America. Our obsession with guns has backed us into a corner, but there are some measures conservatives and liberals can agree on (even in Idaho).

We’re starting to turn the corner to the second half of summer (wild!) but there’s still so much more on our community events calendar. When it comes to festivals, Marissa Lovell has the download on what to check out before the season wraps up. She’s the writer and editor of the From Boise newsletter, which is a great source for concerts listings and other rad events going on around the community. (Plus, we’re partnering with From Boise so you’ll see us talking eachother up on the regular!)
From an annual Basque Block party to a new music and mural festival in Garden City (plus a soul food-inspired weekend, a local film festival at the old Idaho State Pen and a bike-powered party in downtown) — our weekends are looking pretty booked through September.
Oh, and please mask up and try to stick with mostly outdoor, distanced events! COVID-19 is still a problem in Boise ya’ll. With a new and sneakier variant going around, we’re officially in “yikes” territory with community spread. If it feels like everyone around you is getting sick, it’s because they probably are. Please stay home if you’re feeling sick!

We all know a lack of affordable housing is one of the biggest issues facing the Treasure Valley. For folks with low incomes, it’s especially challenging. So what’s Boise doing to solve this problem?
In the first of many conversations about our housing crisis to come, we’re talking with Idaho Statesman reporter Paul Schwedelson, who covers growth and development.
Have thoughts on how the City of Boise should fix our housing woes? The city is holding three open houses this month to get feedback on their zoning rewrite, which is super important in how our community responds to this issue. The first open house is Thursday at 5:30-7 p.m. at Library! at Hillcrest. Click here for more info.

Last year, two farmworkers died from extreme heat — one in Oregon, and one in Washington. The tragedies prompted organizers with the non-profit Idaho Immigrant Resource Alliance to spotlight unsafe conditions Idaho farmworkers deal with regularly. They created a fund and gathered donations of basic protection items to protect Idaho farmworkers from the dangers of extreme heat and wildfire smoke.
Today, we’re talking with the organizers behind that fund. Irene Ruiz and Samantha Guerrero are once again raising awareness and money to support farmworkers who drive the state’s critical agriculture industry.
Here’s how you can donate to the Idaho Immigrant Resource Alliance’s second annual Heat and Smoke Relief for Farmworkers. IIRA is accepting donations for bottled water, bottled sports drinks, coolers, athletic coolers with spout, reusable ice packs, cooling scarves, straw hats, baseball caps, bandanas, N95 masks, sunscreen and funds. Donation drop off locations can be found in the Treasure Valley, Magic Valley and South East Idaho.
Monetary donations can be mailed to 910 W. Main St. Ste. 316 Boise, ID 83704

Following which new restaurants have opened and which ones are closing is kind of a cottage industry in Boise media. And as much as we like clicking on those headlines (because we all want to know!), it’s good to step back and see what wider trends are going on in our food scene — and what it means for our community.
That’s why we’re talking with local writer Lex Nelson, who covers food and drink in the Boise Weekly and other outlets. She’s breaking down the top 3 trends going on in our food culture right now. (Spoiler: Yes, we talk about Idaho’s first In N’ Out!) Be sure to read her story on The Warehouse, which is slated to open July 12.

Thousands of people in Boise rallied and marched over the weekend to protest the Supreme Court’s Friday ruling against abortion. There was an impromptu gathering on the statehouse steps Friday and an organized rally at Cherie Buckner Webb Park on Saturday. Donations to local and regional abortion funds flooded websites as people faced the reality of losing access to this healthcare statewide. Meanwhile, Planned Parenthood lawyers worked long hours to find a way to stop our state’s so called “trigger law” from going into effect later this summer, a law that would ban abortion in almost every instance.
Right now, we don’t know the fate of our trigger law or our 6-week abortion ban. Both are being challenged in state court. What we do know is the fight for reproductive rights is very active, and there’s lot of info to share about accessing abortion care now, and if the bans go into effect.
That’s why we’re talking with Mistie DelliCarpini-Tolman, the Idaho State Director Planned Parenthood Alliance Advocates. She shares her thoughts on how to care for our neighbors in this moment, and why we need to take an inclusive approach to fighting for reproductive rights in Idaho.
Click here for info about the Ontario, Ore. health center, which Planned Parenthood hopes to open soon.

Technically, Boise Pride is in September this year, but we’re holding space for conversations about Boise’s queer and trans communities this month too. On today’s episode of City Cast Boise, newsletter writer Blake Hunter is talking to the recent winner of Boise’s Next Drag Superstar, Frida Nightz, about their journey into drag, the competition, and what inspires them.
In a space as white, conservative, and straight as Idaho — even Boise — drag artists are important purveyors of culture. And as a Mexican and non-binary artist, Frida is here to create community — but if you’re unfamiliar with the lived experiences of trans and queer Idahoans, she’s here to teach you some things, too.

It’s been more than a week since 31 men from the white supremacist group Patriot Front were arrested and charged with conspiring to riot in Coeur d’Alene. Most of them travelled from other states to potentially violently attack locals celebrating Pride — in broad daylight. Police stopped the U-Haul truck carrying them just blocks away from the public park where LGBTQ families and allies were gathered to celebrate community.
To try and understand why this happened — and why it could happen again — host Frankie Barnhill talks with journalist and Extremely American podcast host Heath Druzin.
We know today’s episode is a downer and we’re looking for ways to stand up for our gay and trans neighbors in particular. But we’re not starting from scratch here — Idaho has defeated bigotry before. The Idaho Press put out a great feature that reminds us how we kicked out the Aryan Nations about 20 years ago, when political leaders crossed the aisle to stand against hate in our home. Our own history can teach us a lot right now.

Summer and bicycling in Boise go together like peanut butter and jelly. Cruising along the Greenbelt is a delight, and grabbing a group of friends to ride around downtown can make even the most cynical Boisean feel like a kid again. But so many of us still use our cars as our primary way of getting around, which is a problem if we ever want to meet our city’s climate change goals. What gives?
Today, we’re talking with Garden City resident and Boise biking enthusiast Joe Jaszewski. He (mostly) ditched his car 8 years ago, and has plenty to say about what could make it easier for folks to hop on their bikes more often.
Want to get involved in making Treasure Valley streets safer for cyclists? Check out the Ada County Highway District’s upcoming public meeting schedule so show up to testify. Idaho is pretty used to getting embarrassed in national media for cranking out far-right extremist figures. But in last month’s Republican primary, extremists who were hoping to win statewide elections lost big-time — for the most part. That doesn’t mean the legislature won’t drive Boise liberals nuts next year though. To find out whose having a moment and whose been kicked to the curb in Idaho’s GOP, we talk with two local reporters who keep a close eye on the statehouse. Heath Druzin hosts the Extremely American podcast and James Dawson — also known as Jimmy — covers politics for Boise State Public Radio.
Also: If you’ve moved recently, remember to update your voter registration info. Here’s how to make sure you’re ready to make your voice heard in November.

We haven’t officially switched to summer yet, but the heat is supposed to flirt with us this weekend. City Cast Boise audio producer Evelyn Avitia and newsletter writer Blake Hunter share their hard-won local tips and secret spots to help us make the most of the season (including what to do when it’s 100+ and smoky, and why floating the Boise River is kinda over-rated – but still worth trying!).
What are your favorite things to do each summer, and what are you going to try in 2022 for the first time? Let us know by sending us a voicemail or text: 208-546-9485.
And later in the show, we’ll learn why it’s best to hold onto those floaties and inner tubes until Ada County officials open the Boise River for floating season. With the recent rain storms (not enough to kill the drought, but every drop helps) the water level in the river will be unpredictable for a while, better to wait until things are safer.

For this debut episode of City Cast Boise, we’re starting with the basics: what’s the correct pronunciation of our city’s name? Is it “boy-SEE” or “boy-ZEE,” and who gets to decide? To get to the bottom of it we talk with Boise State University Linguistics Department Chair Michal Temkin Martinez. Turns out there’s been confusion about how Boise should be pronounced since our founding in the 1860s. More recently, the longstanding linguistic debate even prompted a local company to make t-shirts celebrating the way locals say it. So, how do you say “Boise”? Leave us a voicemail: 208-546-9485 or tweet us!
And later in the show: civil disobedience through donated banned books in Nampa. Kudos to Rediscovered Books!
