Marco Giunta:             Good morning guys. How are you doing today?

Chris Kieff:                  Very good.

Stephan Webster:       Yeah.

Marco Giunta:             I'm setting you up today. This is not our normal channel. I want to ask you a couple of questions, and not about technology. They're more about business and sales and marketing. Ready?

Chris Kieff:                  Wait, do we get to take a vote?

Marco Giunta:             No.

Stephan Webster:       One more sip of coffee before this question. Okay, go ahead.

Marco Giunta:             Do you guys remember the Justice League?

Stephan Webster:       Yes. We're talking the cartoon correct?

Marco Giunta:             Correct.

Stephan Webster:       Okay.

Marco Giunta:             The whole concept. Right? If you were on the lane though, you might remember the Avengers. The Justice League was made out of Superman, Aquaman, Wonder Woman. If you were in the Justi

One critical aspect of deployment for any new smartphone is to use a robust MDM (Mobile Device Management) tool, one that enforces your policies and allows IT to track the devices within the enterprise.

These features typically pertain to the approved business apps on the device, data retention policies, Wi-Fi access from the device when it is not being used on a mobile network, and other data and network issues related to that smartphone model specifically.

Cisco, HP Use Shadow IT as a Roadmap

Employees often skirt around the IT department and find their own cloud services, apps or other technologies because they need tools to do their jobs that the IT department doesn’t provide. This so-called shadow IT can be a nightmare for CIOs because corporate data could reside in insecure applications or services and be vulnerable to hackers.

"Some organizations use [tools] so they can stop people from doing things but we use it to help shape our portfolios,” said Rebecca Jacoby, CIO of Cisco Systems Inc., speaking Thursday on a panel at a tech conference in San Francisco."

"It’s a much bigger challenge inside a non-technical organization where we don’t want to have a proliferation of non-standard technologies,” he said, implying that non-technical employees have less of an understanding of the apps they are using."

The iPod and iPhone maker is expected to announce as early as this week a $3.2 billion agreement to buy Beats Electronics, the music streaming service and headphone maker founded by legendary music producer Jimmy Iovine and rapper Dr Dre, according to three sources familiar with Apple's thinking.
The company had been watching Beats Music's take-up rates since its January launch and was impressed when the service signed up some 1,000 customers a day in the initial weeks, one of the sources familiar with Apple's thinking said.

One of the most lucrative software franchises in history, Microsoft Office, has finally come to the most influential computing device of the last few years, the iPad.

Microsoft introduced the long-awaited suite of applications, which includes Word, PowerPoint and Excel, at an event here Thursday, where the company’s new chief executive, Satya Nadella, committed to making the software work on all major computing devices, including those made by its competitors. Apple, Google, Facebook, Microsoft, and Tech Innovations, This is what we discuss on TechReact every week.

This Week at TechReact:

1 This week, Twitter changed its “block” feature so that people who were blocked by users could once again interact with the users who had blocked them. After intense backlash from users — including the lively #RestoreTheBlock hashtag — Twitter reverted the change, saying it “never want[ed] to introduce features at the cost of users feeling less safe.”http://www.wired.com/opinion/2013/12/twitter-blocking-policy/

2 The News Feed is about to get a lot more lively. Just days after pushing its auto-play feature for videos to all mobile users, today we spotted auto-playing videos on Facebook.com, and the company confirms to me “we’re continuing a wider rollout of in-line video on web”. Once this rollout is complete, the stage will be set for the introduction of more flashy video ads. Autoplay video in Facebook news feed. http://techcrunch.com/2013/12/11/facebook-autoplay-video/

3 Whether you’re crunching big data or tracking your family budget, you don’t want to waste time waiting for files to load or re-doing edits that were lost because your Internet connection dropped. You can now get more done byswitching to the new version of Google Sheets. It’s faster, supports larger spreadsheets, has a number of new features, and works offline.http://googledrive.blogspot.com/2013/12/newsheets.html

Much like the mobile phenomenon, the most interesting thing about social networking is not its size, but how it is changing human behavior. ...The first services to take advantage of this development have been leisure applications that allow people to interact with their networks using third parties outside their network environment.   In the future, we’ll see business applications doing the same thing with business networks like those built on LinkedIn.  And Social Media for Business story 2 IFTTT   If it’s more than 30 miles an hour, I know I’m going to either get knocked off my bike (which will hurt) or I will be riding into a headwind and it will be like climbing up to the top of Pike’s Peak.   So I have a recipe that texts me when the wind is blowing more than 20 mph and it also tells me from which direction.

Our Best Social Media For Business Stories this week Social Media Predictions for 2013 Social media data mining is growing but it is firstly and fore mostly a guide rather than the ultimate answer.   We can’t just neatly enter all the parameters into an app, click go and hope that it spits out the answer in real time.

Sure there is a place for big data and its new cousin – affinity data (valuable relationships between consumer behavior, products and content used to create more targeted marketing), but social network platforms are mercurial.   Just look how sites like Digg, Foursquare and Gowalla are declining and Pinterest is rising.

Sure we need to take advantage of the expertise shared around the networks.   After all, collaborative sharing is spreading valuable information and network knowledge.   But there are also endless echo chambers spreading masses of unedited mush.

Social media was abuzz with Sandy as the storm got over four million mentions on Twitter while it was the number one phrase on Facebook, a media report said.

Americans are keeping in touch through the social media as the superstorm wreaks havoc, reported USA Today.

Sandy has had more than four million mentions by almost 400,000 unique sources on Twitter, said Radian6 that tracks social media use.

The site said that mentions of #Sandy have had a potential reach of more than 3 billion Twitter followers.

"Hurricane Sandy" was the top phrase on Facebook in the US in the past day, the media report said.

The other top 10 terms included "stay safe", "storm", "East Coast", "my friends" and "prayers".

Twitter and Facebook became a key way for friends and family to check in on each other.

"Sending my thoughts to all in the path of #sandy... looks pretty bad," read a tweet.

Join Marco Giunta and Chris Kieff how to become a Social media Expert

To become an "expert" in your respective field, use social media in the following ways:

1:  Create a positive brand image  - Make sure that you are seen as somebody who is knowledgeable and well-informed.  Develop your personal brand by establishing a reputation in your niche – always being sure to present yourself in a way that ensures that you will be perceived by people in the right way.

2:  Join various social networks – Create your own profile page on all networking sites like LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, etc., or any networking site that is relevant to your industry or niche.  Be sure to regularly post content on these sites.

3:  Participate in online forums and discussions – You can answer questions posted by other users, spread information about your work, as well as discuss topics associated with your field.

4:  Create your own blog and website – Blogging is one of the simplest ways to share information on things you want to talk about.  By posting quality content on your blog, you can not only demonstrate your knowledge, but also have rightful ownership over it.

5:  Maintain and grow your network – Again, sites like Facebook and LinkedIn are excellent places to connect with people working in your area of expertise.

Facebook this week hit the magic number of 1 billion active users according to the social networking site.

To put that number into perspective, if Facebook were a country, it would be the third largest in the world. It would be even bigger even that the United States which has 314 million residents.

One in seven people in the world are active users. If Facebook existed in 1804, everyone on earth would be posting status updates.

Facebook says over 80 percent of its users live outside the US. In August, Facebook admitted nearly nine percent of Facebook accounts are fakes. If true, that would put the number of actual Facebook users at 900 million.

One billion users in just 8 years, and still, Facebook doesn't have a solid way to make money from any of them.

AllFacebook reports The purge of fake profiles and likes announced by Facebook earlier this month kicked into full gear Wednesday, and the deletion of accounts that were created illegitimately and likes from malware, compromised accounts, deceived users, fake users, and purchased likes caused the like totals of several pages to drop, but in most cases, the effects were minimal.

On average, fewer than 1 percent of likes on any given page will be removed, providing they and their affiliates have been abiding by Facebook terms.

Through the detective work of puzzling out your market's keyword demand, you not only learn which terms and phrases to target with SEO, but also learn more about your customers as a whole. ...  The usefulness of this intelligence cannot be overstated - with keyword research you can predict shifts in demand, respond to changing market conditions, and produce the products, services, and content that web searchers are already actively seeking.

...The keywords visitors type into search engines are often available to webmasters, and keyword research tools allow us to find this information.

...Understanding which websites already rank for your keyword gives you valuable insight into the competition, and also how hard it will be to rank for the given term.

...If your website doesn't rank for the keyword, you can nonetheless buy "test" traffic to see how well it converts.

...For example, if your search ad generated 5,000 impressions, of which 100 visitors have come to your site and 3 have converted for total profit (not revenue!) ...  Those 5,000 impressions in 24 hours could generate a click-through rate of between 18-36% with a #1 ranking (see the Slingshot SEO study for more on potential click-through rates), which would mean 900-1800 visits per day, at $3 each, or between 1-2 million dollars per year.

Once upon a time, you could launch mass email campaigns with the assumption that a significant portion of the emails would find their way to a desktop computer.

...He uses it frequently to change his Facebook status, upload vacation pictures, tweet witty opinions, check the weather, browse YouTube videos, text his friends, and check his email—all while he drops off dry cleaning, picks up a latte, walks to the office, and eats a burrito for lunch.

...In fact, there are so many competitors that nothing wins Pete’s sustained attention for long, and you have to be smart to get a slice of it.

If your content is good and frequently updated you will not only build a loyal audience of recurring visitors, who will often come to see what is new, but search engines will also love your site.

...If you want to learn how to do it, check the How to get Traffic from Social Bookmarking sites article, where we have explained what to do if you want to get free traffic from sites such as Digg, Delicious, etc.

...If you are popular on networks, such as Twitter or Facebook, the traffic you get from there can easily surpass the traffic from Google and the other search engines.

...It is true that not all free ways to promote your site work well but if you select the right places to promote your site for free, this can also result in tons of traffic.

...You can have articles with tons of advice, or short tips but one of the most powerful ways to get traffic is to create a free product or service.

...Viral content is called so because it distributes like a virus – i.e. when users like your content, they send it to their friends, post it on various sites, and promote it for free in many different ways.

...There are forums, which get millions of visitors a day and if you are a popular user on such a forum, you can use this to get traffic to your site. ...  In rare cases you might be able to post a deep link (i.e. a link to an internal page of the site) rather than a link to your homepage and this is also a way to focus attention to a particular page.

...However, if you know the most important ways – i.e. the ways we discussed in this article and you apply them properly, it is guaranteed that you will be able to get lots of traffic for free.

Black Hat is the obvious villainous practice of gaming the system by doing things to raise rankings that Google doesn’t want, and White Hat is just more subtle.

So by definition even the word Search Engine Optimization (SEO) means to “game” the Google search engines (and others) to get your valuable content ranked higher than it would be if left alone to the forces of the Web.

Google proved Adam right one month later (to the day) with the “Penguin release” that is a code name for the algorithm that decreased search engine rankings of companies who were using schemes to artificially increase their rankings.

Now Google seems to believe that if you promote content with social media it is more indicative of relevant content and less likely to be faked.

Join Marco Giunta and Chris Kieff and discuss ...   What is your Social Media Strategy?   http://www.1goodreason.com/blog/blog/2012/06/16/whats-your-social-media-strategy/   We’ve all heard that social media is like a cocktail party, and that it’s not the place for a hard sell.  ...  In pursuit of the hard numbers (more people on the website, in the stores, or buying things) the marketing mangers will resort to harder and harder tactics in social media.    Conversely, managers with objectives such as increase word of mouth, or raise brand awareness are well suited to a natural discussion.     As does asking your social media audience to do something for you, or buy your product if you’ve not built a relationship with them first.   In my mind, the most successful social media strategies target the Connections first and then seek to activate these relationships to achieve business goals.     Keeping up with Facebook and Twitter all day may seem like a low-burnout gig, but being a social media manager is often a 24/7 job for most, who answers messages at all hours and on weekends.    Because social media touches so many different business functions -- customer service, public relations, marketing, advertising -- companies are seeing the value of investing in headcount that manages and observes their brand's performance in this influential and growing online space.

Bill Gates thinks tablets will eventually replace traditional PCs and in the meantime, there is plenty of room in the market for both Microsoft's own Windows 8-based Surface tablet and devices built by the company's OEM partners.   ...For example, Gates touched on the decision by his company to produce its own tablet, the Surface, to help kick start the company's next generation Windows 8 operating system when it's released later this year.   Rumor has it that at least one Microsoft partner, Hewlett-Packard, may have been miffed enough at the software giant's decision to produce the Surface in-house that HP scrapped its plans for a Windows RT-based consumer tablet that already had Qualcomm chips lined up to power it.   ...Gates pitched Rose on Microsoft's next-gen OS, which has a tablet-friendly interface and works with both the x86 processors used in PCs and the ARM-based chips used in mobile devices, as the best of both worlds.

While WSJ stated it is not clear as to when the deal will be officially announced, Bloomberg states that the deal may happen as soon as today (June 15) following an extensive negotiation period while other media reports suggests that the deal could be announced in the upcoming Microsoft press conference, scheduled to happen on the coming Monday (June 18).   That figure compares to around 500,000 devices per day at the end of June last year, and 850,000 per day at the end of February, according to Twitter messages from Rubin, who didn't elaborate on the split between smartphones, tablets and other device types.   It’s less than 24 hours after the news broke, and critics have already come out of the woodwork to denounce Microsoft’s $1.2 billion acquisition of enterprise social networking platform Yammer.     ...Facebook’s $1 billion purchase of Instagram makes Microsoft’s pickup of Yammer look like the Louisiana Purchase by comparison.     ...Here’s why Yammer will be a great fit for Microsoft and why Yammer’s stakeholders are well served by joining the Microsoft universe:         Marcogiunta.com or @marcogiunta

As Apple moves away from using Google as the built-in mapping product for iOS, Google is trying to keep control of the mobile mapping market in the way we like to see: By innovating on the product.

Over 100 million people in the US have smartphones, consumers are spending over 60 minutes a day consuming media on these devices, and people glance at their phone about 40 times a day.

...Without getting into the technical reasons as to why this is the case, I challenge the argument because even if cookies did work I still don’t think you would see an advertising windfall. ...  Using myself as a datapoint of one, when I am on a computer I tend to research specific items and create a browsing history that is rich with information and clearly paints a picture of my intents.

...Advertisers knew people were online, but very little money was spent advertising to them because the only advantage to this medium was scale and reach (and some accountability).

...As I think about mobile. the opportunity to close the gap between time spent and advertising spend is clearly in finding the right targeting parameter that gets advertisers stoked.

...Mobile is a device that is portable, that people carry with them 16 hours a day, and that they look at 40 times a day as they interact with the real world.

...This is a brilliant sales strategy because they are adjusting their marketing based on what people are doing (walking around NYC) and what is happening around them (it is raining) to deliver a message and product that really resonates.

This week we disuss .....   Investors may have really wanted to like Facebook on its first day as a public company, but it appears many have changed their minds. Shares of the social network giant closed at $38.23, just 0.6 percent above the initial public offering price — a price that represented 100 times historical earnings. ...Buying by Facebook’s army of bankers appears to have kept the stock from falling even further, and by mid-afternoon shares had climbed back to about $41.06. ...An investor in tech companies who declined to be identified said he believed some portion of the people who had bought stock in other social stocks, especially Zynga, were doing so as a proxy for Facebook.

But now we know just how much of its revenue comes from advertising: 85% in 2011, with the remaining 15% coming from payments and other fees. ...Zynga, the company that makes FarmVille and other popular Facebook games, is driving the growth in Facebook’s payments business, and is therefore driving Facebook’s revenue diversification away from advertising. ...  Some 12% of Facebook’s revenue in 2011 — but less than 10% in 2010 and 2009 — came from Zynga.    That includes revenue for processing payments — Zynga is the bulk of Facebook’s Credits/payments business — and also advertising that Zynga purchases on Facebook.     Netflix bought $3.8 million worth of advertising on Facebook last year, representing 0.1% of Facebook’s total ad revenue.   The Washington Post company bought $4.2 million worth of ads from Facebook last year, also about 0.1% of Facebook’s total ad revenue.

Rethinking Sales, has an essential message for every salesperson no matter what stage of your career you are in and regardless of your age. You will find valuable lessons and tools that are crucial for any salesperson looking for success. Co Hosted By Jonathan Caplan and Stephen Webster The market is filled with hundreds of 'how-to' programs on sales. However, this is different. My objective is to produce something of value that is significantly unique. I will share 'How I did it' methods with my real life experiences and pull away from the current sales stereotype to a new view on sales as a noble, relevant and profitable career. Building Sales One Relationship At A Time It's no surprise that the world of sale today is more challenging than ever. How, then, can you become that salesperson who stands out among the rest? How can you break through the sales stereotypes and improve client relationships? Salespeople all over the world all have one thing in common - the desire to make money. But also, they want to feel respected and confident in the work that they do. Rethinking Sales opens a new door into the sales arena, and encourages you to understand on a deeper level the entire sales process - from how to make that first impression, to keeping your clients coming back for more. Today we are discussing PPC Pay per Click campaign

Online advertising payment model in which payment is based solely on qualifying click-throughs.

In a PPC agreement, the advertiser only pays for qualifying clicks to the destination site based on a prearranged per-click rate. Popular PPC advertising options include per-click advertising networks, search engines, and affiliate programs.

Paying per click is sometimes seen by some as a middle ground between paying per impression and paying per action. When paying per impression, the advertiser assumes the risk of low-quality traffic generated by the publisher. When getting paid for actions, the publisher assumes the risk of low-converting offers by the advertiser. In the PPC model, the publisher does not have to worry about the sales conversion rate of the target site, and the advertiser does not have to worry about how many impressions it takes to attract the specified number of clicks.

A new Boss? http://bit.ly/lFyLWq No matter who you are, you've got to report to some sort of boss. It's inevitable. Love it, hate it, or anywhere in between, we all have to serve somebody.

As these changes occur more frequently within companies who continue to "rearrange the furniture" so to speak, you once again feel as if you are a freshman in high school, having to prove yourself and what your purpose and contributions are to the company. YOU are not the one who has done anything different, but must now add establishing credibility with a new boss to your already abundant daily stress load.

As if selling in today's economy isn't hard enough.

Knowing that this article may sound somewhat negative, I would like to explain that even as you may feel somewhat unsettled at first, as I mention in my "Rethinking Sales" book, relationship building and trust building are important in every facet of business.

It works for anyone at any stage in their career, and shows how each step of the "sales process" is important in reaching your goal, and ultimately, making the most money that you can. check out RethinkingSales.com and Marcogiunta.com

The biggest quandary of a salesperson is chasing leads which are vague and require a lot of investment in terms of time and money. To qualify sales prospects on the basis of their ‘readiness to buy’, therefore becomes a good business decision. Qualifying a sales deal allows a business to ascertain the amount and nature of efforts required to work only on the leads which are more likely to be converted in to an actual sale.

Following questions can be effectively answered by qualifying a sales deal:

Is there a need to personally visit the customer? Will a phone contact suffice? Is a presentation or a demo required to explain the product/service in a better manner? How much effort needs to be placed to close a potential customer? Is this account big enough to put in our best person for the job?

A sale is a critical business activity, one that must be given the due attention it deserves. Manufacturing a top product line or offering ace business solutions if there are no takers for it, will be a futile exercise. Everything from investment in to Research and Development, Marketing, Branding, Investment in Infrastructure and Human Resources would fall flat in the face in the absence of sales. A continuous sales activity, as it turns out is a strong determinant of whether the business can survive the heat of competition or not. http://bit.ly/dRhYv3

‘Webinars’ is one exciting way of making a meaningful connect with your audience. It is nothing but a seminar or a live interaction with a set of invited audience using the internet. Participants are invited in advance for a scheduled webanair and are interconnected via the World Wide Web. Web conferencing or webanair is widely being used as an effective platform to generate ideas, make presentations, do meetings and conduct training workshops especially for an audience spread over distant locations. At Rethinking Sales we think Trade Shows are very important.

A bunch of people from the same company standing around talking to each other, people Texting or barely awake from the party the night before or worse, Bored the entire time isn't going to draw in a crowd

Your staff has to approach people and start the conversation.

That's just one of the lessons for working a trade show that I attended recently.... a disappointing visit to a marketing trade show where, ironically, no one seemed to know much about marketing their company at a trade show.

using our 10 point TuneUP program to teach the Trade Show staff about:

Identify Your Show's Objectives, Roles and Responsibilities, Budgets ,Strategy and Results. Review all trade Show Presentation, Display material, Event Staffing and Basics of Professional Behavior Train on why optimal performance is essential Define Greeting and Engaging persona customized for expected attendees Develop Elevator Pitch, Qualifying Questions Answers and Handling Tough Questions Dismissing the prospect to continue client quest and minimize Visitors Wait Review trade show agenda to Maximizing traffic How to attend trade show events such as seminars, parties, briefings, Conference Rooms and Demo Handling the Competition, Working with Partners Handling Key Account Contacts

also

how to find your next client or even your next job

see you thursday at 9pm eastern
