As a physician we impact patient's life mostly on an individual level. If we do want to have a broader impact on health care at a community or national level and even have control over our very work then it is important to pursue leadership opportunities. As an underdog it feels very easy to be a follower than be a leader and challenging the status quo can seem like a daunting task.

Welcome to episode 2 of the underdog physicians podcast. As you already might be aware, medical school application process will be starting next month. We are sure this must be an overwhelming, yet exciting times for those applying. There are two different pathways towards becoming a physician in the U.S; allopathic vs osteopathic. In this episode we want to talk about what it means to be an osteopathic physician, dispel some common myths and the challenges you might have to overcome. Osteopathic medicine was founded in the late 1800s to focus on the the body’s innate ability to heal itself. Osteopathic physicians, also known as DOs, work in partnership with their patients. DOs are trained to look at the whole person from their first days of medical school, which means they see each person as more than just a collection of organ systems and body parts that may become injured or diseased. This holistic approach to patient care means that osteopathic medical students learn how to integrate the patient into the health care process as a partner. We have a perfect guest, Dr. Poorvi Shah, to discuss about this topic.
Some key take home points from this episode - Please remember to take care of yourself while in medical school and residency. This is one of the most important habits you can develop. - Remember that medicine is a lifelong journey. Your focus should on finding things that are meaningful and fulfilling for you. - Your degree is not a limitation, its your hard work and dedication that ultimately determines your success - When situations don’t work in your favor, instead of being reactive try to educate other parties involved to get them on the same page to be successful - You cannot make everyone happy and always strive to be the best version of yourself Where can people find Dr. Shah. www.drpoorvishah.com

Hello fellow physicians, This is Vidya Kollu and Anish Desai. We would like to welcome you to our very first underdog physicians podcast. We would like to start this podcast by first introducing ourselves. My name is Vidya and I am a hematology oncology fellow. My name is Anish and I am a hospitalist. The idea for this podcast started from a common journey that we both quickly realized we shared- The Underdog Story. We are both first generation Indian American physicians and have struggled a lot to get to where we are now. As underdogs, the deck always feels like its stacked against us. No matter what you do, you never reach your goal and possibly end up in an even more difficult situation. Been there and done that. Matter of fact have a PhD in that. Jokes aside, this journey made us realize that we do not have to do this alone. So we are creating what we wish we had during our times of never-ending struggle. We hope this will be a podcast version of Alicia Keys Underdog song. This podcast is especially for the undergo pre-med, medical students and residents who want a great comeback story. But also for anyone seeking to find a source of inspiration. We will be discussing application process, work-life balance and giving supra-therapeutic doses of motivation and encouragement. We will also be interviewing amazing physicians who overcame great odds and now are doing very inspiring work. So no matter where you are in your journey, if you are someone looking to embrace challenges and find a supportive and nurturing community then you have come to the right place. Namaste
