Volume 11 of one of Japan's greatest inventions, City Pop, is a tribute to Obon, a fusion of the ancient Japanese belief in ancestral spirits and a Japanese Buddhist custom to honor the spirits of one's ancestors.
City Pop is a fusion of Western styled pop, rock, disco, funk, R&B, Adult Contemporary and yacht rock. This Japanese concoction had its heyday during the late 70s and early 80s, a time when Japan was riding high in its bubble economy. The music in this episode doesn't fully represent the Obon festivals, but in the spirit of City Pop, each of these songs can convey that wonderful August charm, which is when Obon is usually held in Japan.

Volume 10 of one of Japan's greatest inventions, City Pop, is a tribute to the summer event, Tanabata, also known as Hoshi-Matsuri (Star Festival)! This festival occurs on July 7th, where people celebrate by making wishes, and hanging their wishes on bamboo.
City Pop is a fusion of Western styled pop, rock, disco, funk, R&B, Adult Contemporary and yacht rock. This Japanese concoction had its heyday during the late 70s and early 80s, a time when Japan was riding high in its bubble economy.

I made a mistake with the episode unknown to me through an editing error so I had to delete it re-edit it and upload it all over again and that’s everything can really put a dampener on your day, know what I mean podcast people?

Five Flavors of Funk 21 : "Brit Funk #5" - Chas Jankel
We are back with another edition of "The Five Flavors of Funk"! And for the uninitiated, it's time to hop over to the British Isles once again to finally recognize the amazing talents of Chas Jankel! This multi-talented artist can do no wrong in my opinion, from his eclectic use of his songwriting talents to his awesome mix of funk, jazz, electronica, disco, punk, R&B, synth-pop and new wave. And that's just for starters!
I'm dedicating this episode to my brother Chane who passed away unexpectedly last month. Whenever I hear the song "Number One" by Chas Jankel, it reminds me of he and I watching the film "Real Genius" with my other brothers and quoting the memorable lines from that awesome 80s film. He loved this type of music and he would've equally loved this episode.

In my videos you will see some visual slideshows that I would use in my classes for children to be able to sing along comprehensively, I would use colour coding and easy to read fonts.
If it is of any of use to you I hope you can play it in your classroom or at home also.
I tried to calculate how many children I have worked with here in Japan.
If you consider that there is 500 children and an average elementary school not to mention the countless lessons I’ve given at language schools… it must be something like 10,000 kids and upwards I can’t even comprehend it.
I hope most of them will only have fond memories of me.
Todays songs include; Let It Be by the Beatles (written by Paul McCartney) but covered here by Jack Topping. ~ Mithrandir was a track that was written by Leonard Rosenman although I don’t know who sang it. It’s taken from the 1978 film The Lord of the Rings and it is sang at a time of healing ~ Getting to Know You is a song from The King and I about a British teacher who teaches in Asia so that seems very appropriate plus it’s a very lovely song it was written by Rodgers & Hammerstein, The choir of children, Deborah Kerr & Marni Nixon(?) ~ High is the Rue Tree is a song I stumbled on which really captivated me. By Lajos Bárdos and the Cantemus Children’s Choir of Nyíregyháza・Pro Musica Girl’s Choir of Nyíregyháza. Dénes Szabo. From the album Choral Works. Race For The Prize is a song I’ve always loved from The Flaming Lips I was really amazed by this song when it came out. It’s always been my plan to teach this to the children some day. I’ve always loved the lyrics. This version was sang by The Palm School choir.
World in Union is a song that I played in episode one of Peace of Mind. It’s one of my favourites and it bears repeating. Sing is a song I believe was first written and performed by the carpenters but was sung many times on Sesame Street by dozens and dozens of artists but this version will always remain the most iconic for me.

Episode 272. 'What If... Soundtrack' GHOSTBUSTERS cosplay
In this episode I look back on the evolution of my love of Ghostbusters. Specifically since 2017 (same year as meeting Kwesi) when I first tried Ghostbusters as my Halloween costume... and I have tried to improve on it every year since then.
• I'm sure they'll be a lot more on the topic of Ghostbusters in the future •
Likewise, there have always been songs that I like from the 80s and thought I could imagine that being on the Ghostbusters soundtrack. I can't fault Elmer Bernstein's actual score of the film as I think that's one of the greatest soundtracks of all time. Maybe Bernstein's best too for that matter. Certainly his most contemporary and creative I would say.

Episode 271. Peace of Mind • Think of Them
Those Were The Days is a simple project. A labour of love that Kwesi and I set up as a sanctuary free from stress, a place where we can remember the good old days and forget our worries.
As the days go on we've gotten better and stronger and faced many challenges. Now, more than ever, I am so glad we started it.
It's currently the end of May of 2022 as I write this and it's been a turbulent past year or so. I lost my mother to cancer in February and Kwesi lost his brother this month. Also we are aware of a colleague who took his own life. Strange and dark times.
'Peace of Mind' is a segment of the TWTD programme that I dedicate to reflection. I hope I can upload a video at least twice, hopefully 4 times a month.
I make it because I have learned that more there's something more important than chasing happiness and blocking sadness. I hope I can pass on what I have learnt in life. I hope together we can find 'Peace of Mind'.

Greetings fellow nostalgists. As the graphic designer of Those Were The Days - I have, in fact, made quite a few "animated conversation videos" that illustrate what it is we're talking about. Until now they've just been sitting on our YouTube channel gathering dust much to my frustration.
However, since I made the 200th episode with a video (the word vodcast seems so 2010 doesn't it?) I realised it was no bother at all to upload mp4s here on podbean.com.
Seems ridiculously and embarrassingly obvious now. Oh well, better late than never I suppose.
From today I will be revisiting these visual episodes to give them a second chance. After all I believe them to be some of finest moments.

A huge influence to his sound was an utterly anarchic TV sitcom that could only have been made in the political turmoil of Britain in the early 80s; The Young Ones.
