As we honour our volunteers here at Vernon FBC, we consider one of the first volunteers in the early church, Stephen. May we learn to serve like him, in the midst of challenges that come our way.
Randy tells some of his story this week, as we all learn a few questions we can ask if we're to tell our stories in the midst of God's story.
Do our stories matter?
Can our stories help and inspire others?
The answer is simply “Yes,” They do matter and they can inspire others! And they will. In our scripture passage today, 1 st Kings 17:7-16, we find an interesting story of a woman and her son who are not named, but who have an amazing encounter with Elijah and God that changes their lives and has provided inspiration to countless others over the many centuries since it was first told.
This summer there will be a few different speakers besides Pastor Randy bringing the message but each week we wish to hear from some of you too. We want to be inspired by your stories no matter how dull or uninspiring you think they are. Pastor Randy may contact you to ask you to come up front and tell your story, or he may do it in an interview style. Or maybe you can video it like Kaz did. Whatever way you would like to do it, please know that we all would love to hear it, to be inspired by you.
Because, as John Dunne put it, “No man is and island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main.”
We are all part of God’s story and each other’s story. We need to be able to help and encourage each other and the only way to do that is by knowing our stories.
We've made it to the end! What is the core message of The Revelation of Jesus Christ? John gives us a strong emphasis hear at the end and how to live it out.
Let's explore one last time from this incredible gift from Jesus.
What does Jesus mean when he promises to make all things new? New heavens and a New Earth? Let's explore the results of this promise.
What does the image of Jesus riding in on a white stallion inspire in us? What did it mean for the early church?
Let's continue to learn how to walk in the way of the Lamb, who is also the Lion!
After all the intense visions we've endured, John gets to see a wedding! What's it all about? Who is invited? And who is the bride???
After the seven bowls of God's righteous anger are poured out, John is invited by one of the angels to watch the judgment of the Great Harlot, and he is astonished by what he sees. What is the meaning of this image? Christians have pointed to many other things throughout history, but perhaps the call to come out from here is a challenge to us!
In Revelation 15&16 John's vision is of the Temple in Heaven opening and Seven Angels coming out with seven golden bowls. What do these mean? What are we to take from this?
We'll look at some key concepts based in this book this week, as we continue to learn to Trust in Jesus!

What difference does the resurrection of Jesus make in our lives? Is it okay to doubt it, to be a bit bewildered by it? What can we take away for our own lives?

Grace Wulff as she gives us a reflection for Palm Sunday.“Are we almost there yet?” We smile at that sentence, for we might remember ourselves as children on what seemed like a long trip and we would be asking “Are we almost there?”What was it like for Jesus to hold the tensions He has to that Holy Week. What can we learn from Him as we follow the Lamb?
In one of the most challenging chapters of the Revelation so far, we find that there is Good News, some of which may come in the most surprising form! Let's set aside our assumptions and look at this passage as the early church may have heard it.
What are these beasts really about? And that number!! You may be surprised by what the readers in the early church would understand. And maybe even moreso how relevant it is to us!
John's vision takes a dramatic turn with Chapter 12. A fresh vision outlining a great battle that wages around us. How do we fight this battle? John shows us how Christmas gives the answer, sort of. There is a great dragon on the loose - but we have nothing to fear!
We will take a bit of a break as we come to Revelation 11:15-19 and hear from some in our community! The focus of this passage is to Give Thanks as the kingdom of this earth has become the Kingdom of our Lord. So we will give some time for testimony and hear the gratitude of what God is up to in our lives!
What does Jesus mean when He shows John the Two Witnesses? What can we receive from this vision? Lets look at what it might have meant to the early church and then to us.
As we continue in our Revelation study we find something unique in Chapter 10. The second interlude (this time it's between the 6th & 7th trumpets) gives us new visions from John. He's even told not to write some stuff down and we hear about the Mystery of God.
Isn't this meant to explain everything?

Some say Revelation 9 is the scariest chapter of the Bible. What is going on with the fifth and sixth trumpets? Where do these images come from and how did the first hearers of this vision understand it?Let's put ourselves in their shoes together and look at it from their point of view. Ultimately, we might see what Jesus has to say to us.
Things really get going as we get to the trumpets!

Revelation Chapter 7 is an interlude amid the first seven seals. And this part has two very reassuring visions for John personally. They reveal Jesus’ care for John, for His persecuted churches, and for us here today. You will be encouraged, just as the early church was.

Our authors finish a major portion of the Book of Hebrews as chapter 10 comes to a close. They end with a strong encouragement to endure in the midst of suffering. Our own hospital chaplain, Rev. Grace Wulff unpacks this passage in our sermon this week and we know it will be an encouragement you to.
This is not an easy passage of Scripture - the fourth warning of Hebrews. But we must be willing to understand what it meant to the original readers before we can truly apply it to us.

Everywhere we turn today it seems that people have hard hearts towards each other and perhaps toward God! What does Hebrews say about this hardening? Are we to be held responsible when others make us upset? What can we do about? Is it even possible to have a soft heart today?
