In this episode of the More Than You See podcast, host Deborah Lee Smith engages in a deep dive with filmmaker Cameron Mitchell. Beyond sharing personal mental health journeys and the film's background, they delve into broader topics such as the therapeutic role of humor, the systemic issues intertwined with personal mental health struggles, and the importance of supporting underrepresented voices in the filmmaking industry.

About Cameron:
Cameron has been writing all his life. Growing up in Anchorage, Alaska, there was nothing else to do. Cameron has had his scripts and finished films place in dozens of film festivals.
He realized right away how important it was to build the right team. Writing was something he could do alone, but filmmaking is not a solo art; it involves collaboration at every level. He made sure to come away from every gig with new contacts, new friends, and new members of his team.
In 2017 he, Andrew Menjivar, and Thresa Richardson started their production company Tequila Mockingbird Productions. They wanted to produce their own work outside the rigors and obstacles of the studio system. As a producer, Cameron has always wanted to help new and underrepresented voices create their films. He's worked with countless creatives in the years since.
Cameron wrote the script for his debut feature This Sucks in part to vent his frustrations with the state of the world and to talk about his own struggles with depression. The film was awarded the ReFrame Stamp from Women In Film and the Audience Award for Best Feature Film at the Golden State Film Festival. It is currently streaming free on Tubi.

About Sam:
I am Sam Valentine, a 12 year veteran of the Actor-Life in LA (with credits from Amazon's Bosch: Legacy to some pilots you never saw). I moved to LA with a Theatre degree and more conviction than I had dollars and proceeded to spend the better part of a decade trying to be literally anything a breakdown wanted me to be.
I created One Broke Actress because I saw a need for stories and advice of real working actors. Am I the all-knowing being in Hollywood who has booked a billion jobs and made big bucks with acting so therefore I know how to advise people and lead like the Gandhi of Southern California? Negative. But I feel there is a lack of honest sharing from actors who are in the thick of it. This career path is crazy AF but that doesn't mean you have to be. So let's get real and maybe learn a life lesson or two in the process.

Our final episode of Season 4 of the More Than You See features singer-songwriter Nadia Vaeh! This episode talks about exploring mental health and processing trauma through our creativity, the importance of self-reflection, the impacts of generational trauma, and how it all connects to Nadia’s musical journey.
We'll be back in January with Season 5, so stay tuned!
Mentioned in the Episode:
End-Of-The-Year Reflection Questions/PromptsAbout Nadia:
IMA “Vox Pop” winner and Atlanta native Nadia Vaeh is turning heads worldwide for trailblazing what is now coined “poptimistic-rock.”
With her conscious, narrative-flipping songs, Nadia embraces your inner villain, addressing the lows of mental health, the highs of toxic relationships, and the roller-coaster that we call life.
Her lifelong love of poetry and music was inherited from her mother, who, in a tragic turn of events, she lost to suicide at the age of 17. This devastating loss is what fuels Nadia’s endless drive to create awareness of the importance of mental health.
Early year side hustles in modeling, and an unexpected stint with an Atlanta circus, Nadia learned how to captivate an audience through performance and honing her skills as the bombastic, forthright show-woman she is today.
Fast -forward and we have the electrifying, and explosive feel-good fun in one magenta-colored package, Nadia Vaeh, who is known for deeply connecting with her audience, advocating for and offering inclusive, safe spaces for those who may feel excluded, anxious, or out of place in their own lives.
“I hope my songs can provide some refuge for my listeners and help keep them inspired to go for their dreams.”Nadia's Links:

Thrilled to introduce this week’s More Than You See guest— writer, storytelling consultant, and “professional nerd” Alan Pablo Kistler.
Alan Pablo Kistler Zambrano is a writer and storytelling consultant who sometimes acts. In the past, he has been a playwright and stage director, a screenwriter, a pop culture historian for outlets such as Wired.com, MTV.com, and the History Channel's website, and a contributing writer for books such as Doctor Who Psychology, Wonder Woman Psychology, and Star Trek and History.
For his essays on the history of US science fiction, superhero design history, and LGBT representation in comic books, he was nominated for a CNN iReport award in 2012. His book Doctor Who: A History became a New York Times Best Seller in 2014. He still acts on occasion and does storytelling consultation for different clients, but his main job now is being a writer and producer at Dark Burn Creative where he has worked on marketing campaigns and video trailers for games such as Star Wars: Jedi Survivor. He hopes he never has to stop being a professional nerd because it's a great way to constantly learn new things about people and storytelling.
We have a fascinating discussion about exploring mental health through the lens of comic book characters, the masks we wear daily, representation in media, and the power of humanity in storytelling.
Please Note: This was recorded during the SAG-AFTRA and WGA Strike. Any mention of a specific show or film associated with struck companies has been bleeped out or removed from the episode in solidarity with the strike.

I am ecstatic to have Laverne McKinnon on episode 2 of Season 4 of the More Than You See Podcast! Laverne McKinnon is a multi-faceted, multi-hyphenate who is dedicated to helping people process grief around forms of loss that traditionally have less support and understanding in our society.Formerly a development executive, Laverne is a writer, creative producer, career coach, and what she refers to as a "Grief Doula", where she helps guide people through the grief that occurs after something has been taken away from them, specifically in relation to careers and creativity. We also discuss how there is not much support for when you lose a job or have an unexpected change in your career. There are a lot of resources and compassion reserved for losing a pet, a loved one, or having a marriage end, but much less so for other massive changes in our lives.Laverne and I have a fascinating conversation around feminism and the role of women in the entertainment industry, the ways that our voices have not been heard, and how that is slowly beginning to change. Chatting with Laverne about her work and how she helps people process the day-to-day challenges associated with losing a part of their identity was both moving and inspiring! If you would like to learn more about Laverne, you can visit her website and IMDb, both of which are linked below.Laverne's Links: Laverne's WebsiteIMDbPlease Note: This was recorded during the SAG-AFTRA and WGA Strike. Honored to have Jessica Erin Martin on the podcast as the first guest of Season 4! We discuss so many aspects of being a creative and mental health advocacy from finding your voice, coping with feelings of suicide and depression, creating your own work to help touch the lives of others, and what to do when the biggest achievement of your career coincides with the WGA/ SAG-AFTRA strike which means she can't promote her own work!
Jessica is an actor, writer, director, and producer hailing from Seattle. Jess started her career in regional theater and has performed on stages across the country. In Los Angeles, she has worked in commercials, films, and television (NCIS: LA, Ratched, General Hospital, S.W.A.T., Z Nation, Criminal Minds, The Last Ship, Grimm). She was most recently in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer. Jess is also the voice of Samus Aran in Nintendo’s Metroid: Other M.
To learn more about Jess, please look her up on IMDb or follow her on Instagram! Also, mentioned in the episode is the short film that Jess and I made a few years ago. Watch Imogen's Imaginary Friends here!

Season 4 is officially starting up again in a few short weeks, but I felt it was really important to have a mini bonus episode about the WGA strike and the pending SAG strike and what it might be doing to our mental health. I know I have been spiraling about the state of the industry and I remind everyone (and myself) that this situation is temporary, that our feelings of overwhelm should be acknowledged but not given the reigns, and what we can do to help us when we are feeling hopeless about AI, never working again, etc. We are all in this together.
SAG members vote YES on the strike authorization. Vote by June 5th HERE.
Information about the WGA strike and how to join the picket lines!

This week is the final episode in our three-part series about mental health treatments! I discuss mental health medication with an amazing friend of mine who is an incredible actor, writer, vet and dog mom. She recently went on medication for her Depression and shares how it has impacted her life in incredible ways. Follow Shannon's journey on her Instagram / Twitter and let her know how much you appreciate her sharing her story!
Science of Wellbeing Course mentioned in the episode!
I also share a voicemail from my friend Helenna Santos-Levy who originally came on the podcast in season 1 (listen to the episode here!) to discuss her decision to go on medication for her OCD. She shares how the medication has continued to help her navigate life!
I hope both of these stories will help give you the tools you may need if you have ever considered going on medication to assist with your mental health journey. As always, please let me know what you think and remember to rate, review, and subscribe!

Happy 2022 everyone! I know that with the start of a new year there is always talk around the "new and improved" version of yourself. I talk this week about how damaging that mentality can be to our mental health, suggest some healthier ways you can track your new year and set goals for yourself, and remind you that you are perfect. Exactly as you are.
Please let me know if you have any ways you are focusing on your evolution in 2022, and how I can best support you on your mental health journey!

This week I start by sharing a personal story about a situation that ended up being a huge trigger for me and sent me into an anxious spiral. Then I dive into the classification of specific phobias and different treatment options for these phobias. I wrap everything up at the end by reminding you that your triggers are not "issues" and instead just make you the unique individual that you are.

We discuss the actual definition and symptoms of social anxiety, some ways you can treat this disorder, and I share some tips and tricks of things that I do when I am feeling uncomfortable in new social situations. This week I dive into grief and what we can do to cope with the loss of a loved one, especially during the holidays. Grief is never easy, but it seems to get exacerbated especially in times when we feel that we are supposed to be happy. I dive into some of the ways we can cope with these feelings and remind ourselves that our grief is our own, we experience it in different ways, and that grief comes in waves. Whatever you are feeling today is not what you will feel tomorrow. As always, I am here to share space with here, hear your stories, and walk beside you in your own mental health journey.

Today's episode is all about the holidays and how our relationships, families, and situations can make our mental health worse. Yup, that's right. It is statistically proven to make our mental state worse, but I will talk about why and some simple ways you can combat these icky feelings. I also discuss the book "It Didn't Start With You: How Inherited Family Trauma Shapes Who We Are And How To End the Cycle." I also mention my Tik Tok! If you have any desire to follow me and dive deeper into mental health, click HERE!
:) Please let me know what resonates with you and what you are struggling with so I can address it on a future episode. As always, I am here right beside you on this messy thing we call life. See you again next week! ~

Welcome to the final episode of the second season of the podcast! In this episode I talk all about purpose and how it helps me through some of my toughest times. From small things like baking brownies for a neighbor, to big things designed to help others, identifying and chasing my purpose is the greatest tool that I have in my mental health toolkit. We are taking a few months hiatus, and in the mean time, make sure you follow and engage with me on Instagram and identify some things that give you purpose in life. I will miss you all, and see you in a few short months!
I also mentioned on the episode that I would LOVE for you to take a quiz and give me feedback about the podcast.

In this recap episode and companion to our episode with the amazing Shelley Regner (actress from the Pitch Perfect franchise), Deborah discusses one of her big takeaways: the danger of being identified mostly by our careers. Especially with Covid on the rise again, it is important to make sure that we are giving space and focus to many different aspects that make us who we are, not just one. To listen to the episode with Shelley. Please go here.

So excited to have actress, Shelley Regner, on the show today for episode 10! This is our last interview of the season and Shelley could not have been a better guest! Shelley Regner is an actor, singer, and every now and then dancer from Louisiana who has lived in Los Angeles for almost 10 years. She is most notably recognized for her role as the Bella "who's literally been here the whole time," Ashley, in the Pitch Perfect franchise. She earned her B.A. in Theatre Performance from LSU and has continued to perform live throughout her career in both regional and national productions. Credits include UMPO's A League of Their Own, Unauthorized Jennifer's Body Musical, Cruel Intentions Musical, and more. She is an original member of Disney's D Cappella, performing the first national tour and the Hollywood Bowl. Shelley's most recent film role in the dramatic thriller, Adverse, starring Mickey Rourke and Thomas Ian Nicholas can be seen now on digital and DVD. Shelley is an advocate for mental health, body positivity, and a huge lover of coffee and dogs.
Shelley and I talk about what it was like growing up in the South and dealing with mental health issues and depression. She is very open about her journey in Hollywood from booking Pitch Perfect to struggling for jobs after that. Shelley and I discuss the importance of therapy, how our families impact our mental health, and much more!

This week join me for a debrief episode about my interview with actress, storyteller and star of SyFy's Resident Alien: Sara Tomko. I absolutely loved chatting to my amazing friend about her recent success, mental health work, and how much meditation and different forms of spirituality have helped her stay grounded and true to herself. Always inspired and enamored with my friend Sara Tomko who joined us for this podcast this episode. Sara Tomko is an entertainment artist & mental health advocate living in LA. She has been acting in film and television since 2007. Her roles include guest stars on Once Upon A Time, Sneaky Pete, and The Leftovers. Her most recent success is playing the Series Regular role of Asta in Resident Alien on SyFy. You can find her on Instagram @saratomko19 & Twitter @actressaratomko to keep up with her work. Sara and I discuss the hardships and healing of going through divorce, how much meditation and a spiritual practice has kept her grounded, and how she stays true to herself as her interaction with society shifts as her career continues to blossom. Absolutely adored talking to Sara, and I hope this episode will leave you feeling inspired and full of warm fuzzy feelings. ~~~~ Every week join me, Deborah Lee Smith actor, filmmaker, mental health advocate for a conversation on mental health like you’ve never heard before. Welcome back to season 2 of the More Than You See Podcast! I am so excited to have some incredible conversations this season with different actors, filmmakers, nutritionists etc that will open your mind to a whole new side of mental health. I am sure every episode will provide you with a different point of view and resources to help you with your own wellbeing. We start this season with Lianna Nielsen who discussed the direct correlation between gut health and mental health. Learn more about Lianna Lianna Nielsen is an Integrative Nutrition Health Coach certified through the Institute of Integrative Nutrition, with specializations in both gut and hormone health. She has a B.A. from the George Washington University and also studied personal leadership and development coaching under Kathleen Schaefer, founder of the Human Being Store. Lianna was inspired to become a health coach through her own healing journey. In her 20’s she developed an undiagnosable autoimmune condition. After seeing countless unhelpful doctors, which inspired lots of her own research, she discovered she could heal her body through food and lifestyle interventions. Lianna combines both her health coaching and leadership and development training with her own healing journey to teach people to listen and connect more deeply to their own bodies, creating health, vitality and clarity. She has a holistic approach to nutrition and strives to create balance in both physical and mental health, which leads to alignment in all other areas of life. ~ Every week join me, Deborah Lee Smith actor, filmmaker, mental health advocate for conversations on mental health with nutritionists, actors, filmmakers, artists, etc like you’ve never heard before.
