This episode is part 2 of the conversation that Amy Fritz and Melissa Hogan started in the previous episode. Amy shares more of what she was seeing in Ramsey Solutions that felt very similar to news of scandal with other Christian ministries and leaders. In this conversation Melissa and Amy talk about over two dozen resources they found helpful in recognizing and processing abusive and/or unhealthy organizations, understanding the hurdles whistle-blowers have to telling the truth, and the voices that gave them courage to speak up.

Amy Fritz is joined by Melissa J. Hogan for a conversation about how they realized they were connected to an unhealthy organization.

Amy and Melissa met when Melissa's husband at the time, and Nathan, Amy's husband, were working at Ramsey Solutions. In this episode they talk about how the events happening in the Evangelical world in 2018 and 2019, along with different strategic resources, helped to open their eyes to red flags in the organization.

Chuck DeGroat returns to the Untangled Faith podcast with host Amy Fritz to explore the transformative work of moving from self-awareness to self-regulation and how our response to shame changes everything.

“I call the work that I do sometimes excavation work, because we're removing rubble. . .There's a lot of rubble that has kept me inwardly oriented and not as merciful or more prone to bitterness than prone to justice as I do my own work. And as I identify these parts of me that are self-protective, and befriend them and bless them and offer peace to them, there is a sense in which we all can live from that deep heart God created us for in love, goodness, faith, gentleness, meekness. . .And so I often say in the work that I do, the greatest asset is that I'm working with image bearers.” - Chuck DeGroat

In this episode we:

  • Address the repercussions of the Calvin University president's resignation and its ripple effect on community leaders.

  • Discuss the need for self-awareness in understanding one's actions as incomplete without self-regulation

  • Discuss the delicate balance between speaking out on issues and exercising prudence in engagement.

  • Unpack the concept of shame, its link to narcissism, and the importance of having strategies to work through it.

  • Share personal stories that highlight our relationship with shame in relationship dynamics.

Becky Castle Miller joins Amy to discuss strategies for assessing the character of church leaders, the importance of being informed, and how to navigate the often-discomforting process of learning about and responding to accusations against those in power.

You'll also get to listen in on some of our personal experiences—the struggle of having to reconcile conflicting information about individuals we once admired and our responsibility to inform others, while remaining sensitive to those at different places of being able to receive that information.

You'll hear about the responsibility individuals have to speak out within their communities and organizations, responsibly handling these issues, and why it's crucial to believe and act upon allegations, even when they first emerge in less formal settings.

"I think there's so many people that are hurting quietly and feel like they're not good Christians or they don't measure up or they're not good enough. Today’s episode is a conversation I’ve been wanting to have for a long time.

It just so happened that several things happened recently that prodded me forward to find someone to have this conversation.

Today we’re talking about problematic platforms. How do we decide which invitations to accept when it comes to sharing a message we’re passionate about. What if the platform is being offered by someone you have ideological issues with or hosted by a organization you aren’t sure about.

I talk through this issue today with my friend and fellow podcaster, Markus Watson. We also talk about how we process pitches from folks who want to be on our shows.

In this episode, you will:

  • Discover the key factors to consider when choosing the perfect platform for your Christian podcast or speaking engagements, ensuring maximum reach and impact.
  • Learn effective strategies for vetting potential podcast guests, ensuring that their values and beliefs align with your Christian message and audience.
  • Understand the importance of aligning your podcast or speaking engagements with your core Christian values, creating a space for meaningful and impactful conversations.
  • Gain insights on the benefits of seeking input from trusted advisors in your decision-making process, helping you make informed choices that resonate with your Christian audience.
  • Explore the power of leading with authenticity and integrity in your Christian podcast or speaking engagements, establishing trust and fostering meaningful connections with your listeners.

For some reason, this fall has brought a steady stream of voices telling about what it’s life when life is difficult. I don’t say “yes” to every pitch, but when someone raises their hand and bravely says “The life I’m living isn’t what I signed up for”, I pay attention.

I pay attention because that’s my life.

And, I suspect it’s how you feel about your own life.

Author Sarah Frazer joins me for a conversation about what it’s like to reckon with a life you didn’t sign up for. I love the messiness and un-resolved-ness of her story. Because I can relate.

In this episode, you will:

  • Hear how Sarah found peace and contentment in the midst of life's disruptions and challenges.
  • Learn valuable lessons from the life of Moses in facing interruptions and finding solace in the Lord.
  • See the power of unanswered questions.
  • Hear ways to support others in their times of difficulty by being present, offering authentic comfort, and avoiding clichés.

Veteran religion journalist, Bob Smietana joins Amy Fritz to talk about his new book Reorganized Religion: The Reshaping of the American Church and Why It Matters.

The episode was originally aired in the fall of 2022.

Bob shares why burning it all down is not the best approach to organized religion, why the "organized" part of "organized religion" is important, and what the future of the American church looks like.

Bob also shares some thoughts on the pastoral plagiarism conversation and what it was like to be able to publish an exclusive interview with Beth Moore.

Lawsuit Update: Hypocrisy and Double Standards at Ramsey Solutions Explicit content and language warning.

This is a conversation that was recorded for the Untangled Faith Patreon community in December of 2022. Since it has been about a year since there was much movement in the O'Connor lawsuit, I decided to share this audio publicly. If you hear any mention of "upcoming" dates, keep in mind that this was recorded almost a year ago.

In this episode of the Untangled Faith podcast, host Amy Fritz is joined by attorney, Melissa Hogan, to discuss the ongoing lawsuits that involve Dave Ramsey's company, Ramsey Solutions (The Lampo Group), and the hypocrisy and double standards within the organization.

Melissa shares from her perspective as an attorney and from her personal experience with Ramsey Solutions in regard to the O'Connor lawsuit.

Melissa and Amy also discuss the inadequate investigation conducted by Ramsey Solutions and shed light on the power dynamics within the organization and the intimidation faced by individuals who challenge the status quo.

This episode serves as a wake-up call to listeners, reminding them of the need for ethical and responsible behavior within organizations.

We should all be living in a way that if a camera was following us around, our goal is to be able to stand by whatever we've said or done. - Melissa Hogan

Note from Amy: I recorded and edited this podcast before a dear friend experienced a deep grief. This was already scheduled and uploaded and ready to share prior to that. So, while it may seem that this podcast is shared in response to that, it was not.

"Read widely and in diverse communities. Challenge your biases and seek out perspectives that differ from your own. This will lead to a better understanding of Scripture and its application to our lives." - Kaitlyn Schiess

While an undergrad at Liberty University, Kaitlyn Schiess detoured from her plan to go to law school after the ideas involved in the intersection of religion and politics captured her attention. That detour led to Dallas Seminary and Duke Divinity School instead of law school and it has lead to two books on the subjects we're not supposed to talk about in polite company: Religion and Politics.

And that's a lucky break for us because Kaitlyn is the perfect person to join the Untangled Faith podcast to talk about this in a way that feels more like an invitation to something better than a challenge to enter a boxing ring.

Key moments from this episode:

Excitement for the New Book,

Kaitlyn's Unexpected Path into Religion and Politics,

Co-opting the Phrase "City on a Hill",

The Importance of Reading Widely and in Community,

Exploring Diverse Perspectives through Commentaries,

Navigating Political Differences in Christian Community,

The History of Cherry Picking Verses,

Moving Beyond Cherry Picking,

The Bible's Relevance to Political Questions,

Seeking Christ-likeness,

If I question, if I doubt, what if everything falls apart? Become an atheist if you need to. If Jesus is real, he'll find you again. Let the things unravel that need to unravel. - Christy Wood

Have you heard these myths about deconstruction and the journey of faith?

Myth 1: Deconstruction means losing your faith.

Myth 2: Questioning is a sign of weakness.

Myth 3: Faith means never asking questions.

Christy Wood joins Amy Fritz for a conversation about leaving behind legalism and finding Jesus where we don't expect to find him.

(If you downloaded this previously, there was a glitch with the audio. Hopefully, it's fixed now!)

Just a quick note at the beginning of this episode to let you know that today’s content is not safe for young children. We cover some heavy topics and I’m certain a few cuss words survived the final edit. I also wanted to let you know we cover the topic of abuse and understand this could be triggering for some listeners. Please take care while listening.

In early June, Shiny Happy People: Duggar Family Secrets debuted on Amazon Prime.

It reached more viewers in its first 9 days than any Amazon docuseries.

Journalist Selome Hailu reported in an article for Variety, that “measured over the same nine-day period, the series has been responsible for the acquisition of more new Prime Video costumers than any other Amazon docuseries.

While many have been drawn to watch this docuseries because of interest in the Duggar family, once they turn in, they get an education on an organization the Duggars have been closely tied to.

And that organization was founded and led for many years by a man we now know to have been credibly accused of the sexual assault of multiple young women among other abusive behaviors.

On today’s episode I’ll share some of the history of that organization and some stories from those who participated in one way or another in this community.

A note from Amy:

I asked my guest this week some awkward questions because I feel strongly about caring for the people who listen to my podcast. I know you're not showing up to listen to a softball interview with someone trying to sell something.

I think we’re all allergic to that.

In this episode, we dig deeper into authentic relationships and discipleship in our faith communities that goes beyond measuring Butts in seats, Budgets, and Baptisms.

In this episode, we talk about:

  • Nurturing real connections and uniting believers by embracing the power of community within discipleship.
  • Reorienting your church's priorities from tracking weekly turnout to nurturing spiritual maturation.
  • Maintaining a delicate equilibrium between extending invitations and presenting growth opportunities in your faith journey.
  • Creating an environment that values trust and fosters vulnerability amongst your congregation.
  • Elevating the concept of one's position within the heavenly family over transactional interactions in religious life.

“Many of us are questioning if it’s worth staying in the church as we know it. The problem is, as hard as it may be, and with very few exceptions- captivity, a desert island- we can’t fully experience Jesus without some form of Christian community.

This book is for you, orphaned believer, weary from loss, and yet putting full hope in Jesus. It is also for you who have left church and remain compelled by the Christian story.

Because the spirit of God can work even, and especially, in our wandering."

In this episode, Sara Billups shares about how some of the missteps of the white American Evangelical church impacted her faith formation. Culture wars, end times obsession, and consumerism, oh my!

This is a rerun of an episode from April 2022. Amy will be back with a new episode next week.

In the spring of 2022, a sermon clip from a prominent pastor was shared widely on social media. In it the pastor had some pointed things to say about those talking about unhealthy churches and Christian leaders. Is speaking up like I’m doing here “dogging” on the church? Jenai Auman, writer and advocate for spiritual abuse survivors joins me for this conversation and later in the episode, author Mary DeMuth shares about her new book The Most Misunderstood Women of the Bible.

This week's episode is a rerun of an episode that was shared in March of 2022.

Because we desperately needed something to laugh about, Amy asked her friend, Heather Fulk, to join her to share funny church stories.

From a narcoleptic grandfather to Jericho marches to "special" music, we've got you covered. I hope you're ready to laugh!

Pete Singer is the Executive Director of GRACE: Godly Response to Abuse in the Christian Environment and an expert on third-party investigations, trauma, and trauma-informed practice.

In this episode, you will learn the following:

  1. What misconceptions about perpetrators of abuse do people have, and how can we ensure we are more informed?

  2. How does trauma-informed practice apply in churches, and why is it important?

"If telling the truth is risking the business, you've got a truth problem, not a business problem."- Melissa J. Hogan

Melissa Hogan is an attorney and fan favorite of the Untangled Faith Podcast. She joins Amy Fritz to discuss the implications of new requirements for employees of Ramsey Solutions, and to shine a light on the ethical and spiritual issues surrounding the policies.

Here's what I cover with Melissa Hogan in this episode:

  1. Unethical, spiritual and practical issues surrounding a Christian company's new policies.
  2. Fear tactics and how they are used to control and manage an image, instead of promoting truth and Jesus.
  3. Potential legal challenges and rights surrounding non-disclosure agreements, works-for-hire and non-solicitation clauses, and forced arbitration.

"We felt like this was an inside conversation. We did this out of love to protect sheep. Exposing the darkness to the light is how it happens." - Lori Adams-Brown

Some of you have a story to tell that you’ve never told anyone.

And some of you are wondering if that story should find it’s way to a journalist.

Where would you go?

How does that even work?

What all goes into the process and what do you need to know to make it out on the other side?

Today I’m joined by two friends who answer those questions as we pull back the curtain to show you what it’s like to go on the record for a journalist.

Lori Adams-Brown and Lori Harding are two courageous women who have gone on the record with journalist Julie Roys to share their stories of abuse in the church. In this episode:

  1. How they decided to go public with their story of abuse. What was the process like? What were their concerns? How did they navigate the process? 2. The role of investigative journalism in exposing the darkness and restoring the church: How did they choose a reporter? What were the expectations? What was the interview process like? 3. The consequences of speaking out: How did they couple prepare for the backlash? What were some of the criticisms they faced?

After spending her twenties running away from the church, Robin Wootton finds hope through a PCA church. And then it all started to crumble. Robin's husband (a PCA pastor) was fired while the COVID pandemic raged. In the subsequent months and years, she's given a lot of consideration to the false neutrality of the church's leadership. "We're never called to be neutral." In this episode, you will learn the following: 1. How the church saved Robin Wootton and her experience of the PCA. 2. The concept of a "third way" or "both sides" approach and Peacemaking in the church. 3. The consequences of Robin Wootton and her husband's attempt to challenge power dynamics in the PCA.

"Laboring in a context where the middle ground has the most power, we're always going to be pitched as the extreme on one side. Someone like me will always be seen as an extremist."

"If you can picture a place where Tim Keller is seen as an extreme progressive liberal, then you understand the context I'm in."

"Are there people who are laboring in good faith who see things I can't see?"

In the introduction to her book, The Book of Common Courage: Prayers and Poems to find strength in small moments, KJ Ramsey says this:

“I titled this book The Book of Common Courage because courage is something we hold in common. Courage is not the possession of the bravest or biggest but the choice to move toward the heart when the mind and body are separated by fear. Courage is the choice to move our fear into communion.

When we don’t have words we need a witness.

We need with-ness.”

Is it possible to be courageous and fearful at the same time?

And what does it look like to start with being a compassionate witness to our own pain?

Author KJ Ramsey joins Amy Fritz for this discussion.

Topics covered:

*Social media boundaries.

*Courage as something you can cultivate.

*Courage begins by being a compassionate witness to yourself.

"When we tell the truth about what we've lived, particularly when we have experienced harm, people will not like having to hear because it requires change."- KJ Ramsey

They say you can’t go home again, but what if all the doors of the exciting life you imagined were closing? What if you dreamed of doing work in an urban area, but instead ended up in Columbia, TN, an hour south of Nashville, where your husband grew up? Oh, and you make this big move right as politics have become a dumpster fire and a pandemic is about to start raging.

Is it possible God is working and moving in our neighborhoods where we bump into folks who have a tendency to be suspicious of each other’s politics and different faith expressions?

Dr. Lauren Pinkston joins Amy Fritz for this conversation.

Topics Discussed:

*Ending up in Columbia, TN in 2019 in the middle of political tension and an upcoming pandemic.

*Learning to love a place you come from when you know all of its dirt.

*Learning that God is not only pursuing people across the globe, but here in the southern United States, as well.

*House church.

*We cannot assume those who are no longer in the pews on a Sunday have fallen away from God.

*Viewing God's work in the global church makes our vision bigger and wider regarding the ways God is bringing hope.

*The process of sanctification should be much higher to us than a one and done salvation moment.

One of the most common questions those who have experienced harm in a faith community ask is, "What do I do if I want to tell my story, but I can't right now?" Maybe you signed an NDA. Maybe you have a legitimate fear associated with talking. If part of healing involves talking, what if I can't talk?

Amy Fritz invites Lydia Craig and Melissa Hogan to join her to talk about how they navigated this for themselves and offer suggestions and hope for others.

Topics Discussed:

*How Amy, Lydia, and Melissa connected.

*When an unhealthy "gossip policy" gets in the way of having important conversations.

*How we figured out what was safe to share and who was safe to share with.

*Being conditioned to not speak.

*Reasons we didn't/couldn't speak for a time.

*Other ways to process painful experiences like this without speaking directly and publicly.

*Prioritizing your well-being.

*Going to those who have exited prior to our own exits and asking to hear their story.

*Documenting your experience.

*The advantage we had with being associated with a public figure.

*Private sensemaking.

*What we would do differently.

To kick off 2023 Amy shares a brief origin story of the Untangled Faith podcast.

Quotes from this episode:

"My adult life has been filled with the realization that so many of these people and systems that influenced what I believed being a “good Christian” looked like weren’t who or what I thought they were."

"So many people I grew up viewing as the standard bearers of Christianity turned out to be hypocrites and grifters and abusers."

"And that’s when felt this heavy feeling that someone needed to go first. If someone would just be willing to go first others would likely have the courage to do so, too.

And maybe I could go first."

The 2nd most popular episode of 2022 was episode 39: The Problem with Financial Peace University and Dave Ramsey's Financial Rhetoric. This conversation we had was made possible by the fact that those of us involved in this episode have spent the last several years processing together our experiences with the ups and downs of Financial Peace University and the rhetoric coming from the Ramsey Show. While we all had different levels of understanding and adhering to the plan, each of us have found ourselves with serious questions. Some of these questions started before we broke ties with the organization and some of these realizations came later. We don’t claim to be unbiased observers. We all have had very painful and disappointing experiences with Ramsey Solutions, but we don’t think that negates the very real questions we raise.

Kyle J. Howard joins Amy to share his experience as an advocate for those who have experienced racial trauma and spiritual abuse.

[00:03:32] Kyle’s story

[00:15:36] “My work in spiritual abuse advocacy. . .has been way more divisive than my work in racial trauma.”

[00:19:13] “One of the things toxic or abusive leaders do is create a cultic culture where people believe they are not worthy of their leaders.”

[00:21:13] “I have no regrets and my credibility is intact.”

[00:26:45] “I think there’s a problem when we have positions of influence and we want all the benefits, but none of the actual costs.”

[00:29:03] “When we value ourselves and our own platforms more than we value people and their souls, our credibility is just going to crumble along the way.”

[00:32:05] What White communities can learn from the Black church about holding on to their faith.

[00:35:23] “When your theological formulation is grounded in power and privilege than when there is loss and suffering, you are not necessarily equipped to actually be able to engage these things in a comprehensive or well-rounded way.”

[00:45:00] “We are most intimately connected to Christ during our most profound suffering, not during our greatest moments of wealth and enjoyment.”

[00:50:00] Effective victim advocacy.

This is for you if you’ve ever struggled with knowing what to share and when to share your experience of spiritual abuse. This is for you if you’ve walked through the valley and wondered if the Good Shepherd was actually “good” because your own experience with those supposed to be shepherds left you hurting.

[00:21:25] We don’t have to so tightly guard this thing that Christ has promised will prevail.

[00:25:20] Using Psalm 23 as the scaffolding of The Lord is My Courage.

[00:34:15] Where are the shepherds?

[00:35:50] Goodness and love are hounding us.

This episode was initially recorded in May 2022 shortly after the leak about a possible decision on Roe v. Wade from the Supreme Court in the US. There was a lot of chatter and I wanted to have a conversation with Emily Snook for my Patreon Community.

In light of the official decision announced today, June 24, 2022, I wanted to share this with everyone and Emily agreed.

So, if it sounds like we didn't know for sure what would happen with the Supreme Court, it's because we recorded this before the decision was announced.

Dan and Summer Watt & Melissa Hogan joined me for episode 39: The Problem with Financial Peace University and Dave Ramsey's Financial Rhetoric.

Links:

I've been doing a deep dive on all things grief.

This makes me super fun at parties.

This season, I hope to walk us through the stages of grief. These are stages that are squishy. They bleed into each other. We don't process grief in a way that allows us to check off boxes finishing one stage and moving on to the next. And many of us are dealing with several losses simultaneously.

Loss of faith community.
Loss of relationships.
Loss of a dream you had that died.

Whatever the loss, it's worth honoring by taking a moment to pay attention.

Join me for the upcoming season Untangled Faith where we tackle the topic of grief.
Coming February 9th.

Krispin Mayfield joins Amy Fritz for a conversation inspired by a tweet: “Has anyone ever stayed at a church to make a change. . . ?” The decision to stay or leave is full of nuance and situational specific issues. Krispin brings up some things to consider when making this decision. What kind of influence do you have? How much time are you willing to invest? What’s the history of the leadership? Do you have the margin to do this? What message are you sending by staying or leaving?

Mayfield also draws on his research in the area of attachment theory and how that impacts our relationship to organizations.

Topics:

What’s your motivation? [00:02:38]

What needs to be in place to have a fighting chance for change? [00:04:23]

What do you do if leadership says they are open to change, but nothing seems to change? [00:06:16]

Everyone is talking about deconstruction and what that means when it comes to Christians. And what about the verses that tell us not to neglect meeting together as believers? What does “meeting together” even mean? How do we process all of this if we’ve been hurt in a faith community? Ryan Ramsey joins Amy Fritz to talk about all of this. They wrestle through some tough questions, address how the pandemic has tossed extra landmines into this topic and talk about the difference between Christian institutions and the body of Christ. Finally, Ryan offers encouragement for those who are struggling.

Key topics:

Author, speaker, and professor, Dr. Wade Mullen, joins Amy Fritz for a conversation about impression management.

In 2018, Mullen earned a PhD in leadership and did his dissertation on how evangelical organizations use impression management strategies in the wake of an image-threatening event. He specifically focused on Mars Hill Church, Sovereign Grace Ministries (now Sovereign Grace Churches), and Bob Jones University for his dissertation.

In this episode Mullen shares the red flags of organizations using impression management in an abusive way, why it's so hard for leaders/organizations to apologize, and the role of a bystander.

Melissa is an author of the upcoming book Afraid of the Doctor. She's also a lawyer, rare disease awareness advocate, and she consults on clinical trial design and patient outcome measures. In other words, she's brilliant.

Amy and Melissa met when Melissa's husband at the time, and Nathan, Amy's husband, were working at Ramsey Solutions. In this episode they talk about how the events happening in the Evangelical world in 2018 and 2019, along with different strategic resources, helped to open their eyes red flags in the organization.

Join them for a discussion on Ryan's deconstruction of the role of pastor, and why he advises people with church hurt not to move on, but to move in. 8:12- The Biblical model of pastor.

14:50- The difference between "moving on" and "moving in".
