My name is Maddison and I am a graduating senior who attended one of the top year round training program for the past four years. I've spent the past three months auditioning for my first professional job and have come up with nothing other than the opportunity to be a trainee in some companies. I feel as that I've already been a trainee for 4 years and my parents are refusing to continue to pay so much to have me be a trainee again with no promise of getting a job. I have heard there are a lot of layoffs and few jobs right now. Is this worse than normal and do you have any advice on my situation? Find Megan Fairchild ~

Hi Megan, I just LOVE your show and listen every single week. I am a fairly decent dancer and think based upon my experience could potentially look for a professional job but REALLY want to go to college first. My goal is to go to a school that has a strong dance program and continue my training there. I understand that making this choice will limit me from some of the top companies but wonder ifyou know whether I am completely ruining my chances by pursuing college before professional dance? Thanks so much for your time. Ellory

Today’s question come from Rachel who wrote in to say:
I am curious what rehearsals look like at NYCB. Who are the players involved in group, divertissment, solo, and pas de deux rehearsals? Is a répétiteur always present, or only for choreography of certain choreographers? What is the role of ballet coaches? I see some of this from YouTube posts from NYCB, SF Ballet, Royal Ballet, etc., and would love to know more.
Love your podcast, particularly the "behind the scenes"topics. As a huge ballet fan, it's so fun to learn about all of the various things that go into a production before the curtain goes up!

Today’s question come from Penny who wrote in to ask ~
Hi Megan – as the mother of a 15 year old dancer who is hoping to pursue a career in professional ballet, I am wondering if there are any “stats” on the percentage of dancers who are pursuing this goal actually “make it”? We have heard over and over again that “there is a company for every dancer”, but to me it seems somewhat impossible for every child to achieve their dream. Can there actually be room in the dance world for everyone? I would love to hear your thoughts on this. Sincerely, Penny from London Megan really dives in deep on this common concern for parents.

Hi Megan! I’m a big fan of yours and of NYCB. I saw a video of Wendy Whelan helping you sew up your pointe shoes. I’m not a dancer, so I didn’t know pointe shoes were so custom made. How can I enjoy being a short dancer but still get some elegant length going as well?”

Today’s question come from:
Sonya who wants to know Megan’s thoughts on the Vaganova method of ballet technique versus Balanchine’s style?
The *Vaganova method is a ballet technique and training system devised by the Russian dancer and pedagogue Agrippina Vaganova (1879–1951).***
Balanchine’s style has been described as neoclassic, a reaction to the Romantic anti-classicism, (which had turned into exaggerated theatricality) that was the prevailing style in Russian and European ballet when he had begun to dance. (excerpt from NYCB website)

Today’s question come from:
CRUSHED who wrote in saying “Hi Megan, I am 17 years old and in the middle of Summer Intensive Auditions. Each year since I was 13 years old I have gotten into some very reputable programs (including SAB) and have always received at least one full scholarship. This year not only have I not received ANY scholarship but I have not really received many acceptances. I am SO upset because I work so hard and now I feel this Th is the ballet world telling me I am not good enough after all. Do you have an opinion on what might be happening and how I can feel more confident.” Signed, Crushed.
Megan provides some solid and straightforward advice – you almost feel as if you took one of her classes!

On this episode, Megan takes over as the interview host of her own show and interviews New York City Principal Dancer Sara Mearns.
Perhaps a first ever experience.
Megan and Sara are not only dancers but very great friends, so this episode feels like you are sitting with them in their home or over coffee.
Megan asks great questions that really help give an authentic peak into the life of a professional dancer. Sara shares her favorite roles, as well as how deeply recently deceased Albert Evans’ death has affected her on a daily basis. The interview is authentic and dives in deep into Sara Mearn’s journey in ballet.
Sara’s vibrant energy keeps things light hearted and fun.
Today’s question come from:
– Natalie who is 12 years old and lives in Hong Kong. Her favorite dancers are Sara Mearns and Megan Fairchild so she was hoping Sara could come on to the show.
