In this episode, Mike chats with Dental Attorney, Robert Larson. Based in the State of New York, Robert has spent the past ten years exclusively representing dentists and other healthcare professionals in all areas of transactional law.

Robert wasn’t always a lawyer, in fact, he started his career as a nurse and remains a licensed healthcare professional. Robert worked in various fields including ICU/CCU, ortho trauma, long-term Alzheimer's care, and office nursing.

Mr Larson explains why he studied to become an attorney, and how he got his first law job working in the back of an Orthodontic clinic. Robert very quickly focused his practice on helping dentists, but sometimes assists other healthcare businesses such as optometrists.

Robert believes his background in nursing has had a positive impact on his law career.

He then explains exactly what transactional law covers, and walks us through the various steps of buying or starting a dental practice from a legal standpoint.

Towards the end, Robert makes the case for working with a dental-focused attorney rather than a general lawyer. Some of the benefits include reduced costs and time savings because an attorney specializing in dentistry already understands the industry, and avoiding potentially expensive mistakes.

Finally, Robert shares his number one piece of advice for anyone thinking about buying or starting their own dental practice.

In this episode, Mike chats with Sharon Waxkirsh - Founder and Director of Academy for Hypnosis.
Academy for Hypnosis, an enhanced school affiliated with the American Council of Hypnotist Examiners and the Dave Elman Hypnotherapy Institute.

Sharon has successfully educated hundreds of dentists, physicians, and surgeons in hypnotherapy. Today, she talks about the benefits of hypnosis for patients and dentists, and also debunks its misconceptions.

In a hypnotherapy session, you are more in control of yourself, far from the misconception of people that hypnosis will let you be controlled.

Sharon explained also that patients are more often to consider hypnosis than dentists. It is because of their fear, anxiety, TMJ problems, bruxism, teeth grinding, clenching, gag reflex, and such things.

The most significant benefit of hypnosis for dentists is you’ll get more referrals, and clients will return and repeat sessions. It’s a moneymaker.

Finally, Sharon shares her number one piece of advice for anyone thinking about buying or starting their own dental practice.

In this episode, Mike chats with Simon Reynolds - Managing Director of Patient Plan Direct. Patient Plan Direct is the UK's leading dental plan provider offering cost effective dental plan administration with a personal service.

Simon kicks-off the episode with his personal journey; he started his career at Patient Plan Direct, only to leave, and later return as the company’s managing director.

He explains what a dental plan is and lists off the many benefits of a dental plan for both patients and dental practices.

Simon then discusses one the biggest trends in UK dentistry; the push by most practices to ditch NHS contracts and concentrate on private dental care. Membership plans are particularly effective at converting NHS patients into private patients.

Mr Reynolds explains why a practice would use a third party service to administer its dental plan, rather than do-it-themselves, and why dental practices should choose to partner with Patient Plan Direct over other providers.

Finally, Simon shares his number one piece of advice for anyone thinking about buying or starting their own dental practice.

In this episode, Mike talks with Dr Tim Richardson, Founder & Owner of Acorn Dentistry for Kids. Acorn Dentistry for Kids is a group of 6 pediatric dental practices located in the State of Oregon.

Tim grew up in Vancouver, Washington, which is a suburb of Portland, Oregon. Many of his family members are Optometrists, including his dad, two uncles, a cousin, one of his brothers, and his best friend from high school. Tim’s mom was a stay at home parent who made sure her five sons survived into adulthood.

Dr Richardson credits both of his parents, collectively and individually, for shaping who he is today. His dad taught him the importance of working hard and never to be a victim of circumstance, while his mom taught him how to care for people.

Tim has always had an entrepreneurial spirit. From a young age, he would set up lemonade stands and sell apples from his family’s apple tree to his elementary school classmates. Tim grew up predominantly playing football, but would take part in any sport involving a ball except golf.

The Richardson’s were a faithful Christian family. He cites strong spiritual roots gave him a really good foundation for how he wanted to be as a business owner in the future.

Keeping busy - with good things - was how Tim unknowingly coped with having ADD. Rather than taking medication, he would just always be doing something.

As an undergrad, Tim was planning on attending medical school to become a heart or brain surgeon. When he found out how long that would take to train for, he started looking at other healthcare options. At the time, he had zero interest in dentistry. That was until a friend - who was planning on becoming a dentist - convinced Tim to spend an afternoon observing a private practice. From that moment, he was hooked on dentistry.

From Tim’s perspective, dentistry finely balances art and science with as much entrepreneurship as you want. Halfway through dental school, Tim discovered pediatric dentistry and chose to make that his specialty.

As an associate, Tim realized that what he’d learnt in dental school was only the foundation. You learn the principles of taking care of patients safely, but nothing about being efficient, working with a team, owning a practice, or leadership.

Tim discusses the circumstances that led to him buying his first dental practice, and why his pursuit of the next challenge led him to expanding to three locations.

Dr Richardson says he sold his original three practices because he was burnt out and overwhelmed. He was working 6 clinical days most weeks, while commuting 2.5-3 hours daily, and trying to run the business. He also had a non-dentist business partner who he was misaligned with. However, the tipping point came when his wife told him how their young son had asked, “when is your husband coming home?” His son referring to him as husband, and not daddy reflected the relationship he had with his son at that time. Tim knew something had to give. He chose to make changes, rather than continue to drive himself into the ground at the expense of his family.

After selling, Tim took some time for himself. He sorted out his back and neck. Tim also got back into exercising regularly and taking part in triathlons.

It didn’t take Tim much time before he started working on a new multi-site group practice. He was determined to learn from his previous experience and mistakes. Because he’d sold his previous group, Tim didn’t have to worry about finances and could focus 100% on setting up the new clinic.

Tim could’ve frugally retired five years after finishing dental school, but his family had dreams and he admits he would’ve driven everyone crazy. He started Acorn Dentistry for Kids one mile away from where he lived and the rest is history. He knew he wanted the team member experience to be as good, if not better, than the patient experience. He knows he’s still made a lot of mistakes, but he's learnt from those mistakes.

As a practice owner, it’s hard work when you try to do everything yourself and be everything to everyone. It isn’t sustainable and Tim says he has the physical and physiological scars to prove it. Once he realized how to build a team that was aligned with the group's purpose, everything got a lot easier.

At the same time, Tim recognizes that no one will care as much about the health of your business as you do. It’s your baby and always will be no matter who is watching it for you. The only way to get alignment is identifying why your business exists and it has to be more than the work you do - it has to be the reason for the work.

Tim has learnt the hard way that just because someone specializes in accounting, IT, or marketing, it doesn’t necessarily mean they actually do it as well as you would think or hope. And they often charge more than the ones that do know what they are doing. You can’t simply sign an agreement and hand it over, you still have to be able to keep a pulse on those activities.

On a more personal level, Tim wishes he had known about the differences between managing, leading, and coaching a lot earlier. That would have saved him a lot of headaches and heartache.

Tim also shares his number one piece of advice for anyone thinking about buying or starting their own dental practice.

If you have any questions for Dr Tim Richardson, then feel free to reach out to him.

Dr Franklin tells Mike why most dental stock photography is wrong, inaccurate, and just plain cheesy, before explaining how her stock images are different.

In this episode, Mike chats with Simon Raybould - Director of Sales at Thalamus. Thalamus describes itself as the ultimate dental patient education solution.

Simon kicks-off the episode by explaining how Thalamus was born from a previous dental venture; Bitebank. Bitebank was and remains a full-service marketing agency for dental practices. Simon and his Co-Founders sold Bitebank to ProSites, but continued to create patient education videos.

Under the Thalamus brand, Simon and his team produce high-quality explainer videos in their Toronto-based animation studio. These videos are designed to educate patients about different dental treatments. By showing patients the proposed treatments, dentists and TCOs can drastically improve case acceptance. Videos are patient-friendly with no blood or gore, and can be dubbed with different accents.

The Thalamus system can be used in operatories and treatment coordinator rooms to educate patients or help them relax with calming videos, it can promote treatments and entertain patients in the waiting room, or videos can be added to the dental practice website to inform potential patients. It’s a truly versatile bit of tech.

In this episode, Mike catches up with Dr Karl Walker-Finch - Principal Dentist at Smiles in Tandem, a private dental practice near Huddersfield, UK.

Karl appeared on the podcast earlier in the year to share his experience of buying his first dental practice. At the time, the sale hadn’t gone through, so we couldn’t talk specifics.

He’s now owned Smiles in Tandem - formerly Grayes Dental Care - for several months and happily shares what he’s learnt since taking over the reins.

Karl explains how the previous owners played a critical role in preparing the existing team for change; presenting it as an opportunity to deliver a better patient experience and move with the times.

He discusses why it was so important to rebrand the practice and why he and his wife settled on Smiles in Tandem, rather than a name containing ‘dental care’ or ‘dental practice’.

Karl walks us through the other changes he’s made to the practice; including introducing daily huddles and switching to Dentally from Software of Excellence.

He also lists the various ways he’s making the practice more sustainable and building a great team culture.

This is a fantastic opportunity to peak behind the curtain of an exciting dental practice. Karl really cares about his team and patients, and is focused on a well thought plan.

We’ll definitely get him back on to give us an update on his practice owner journey.

In this episode, Mike checks in with Marcus Macleod - a serial entrepreneur with several dental-focused businesses; Defacto Dentists, InterDental TV, Your Dentist Recommends, Blue Glove Jobs, and Net Zero Dentistry.

Marcus starts off by talking about his early career, how he retired and started a chain of wine bars with art galleries, before getting heavily involved in dentistry thanks to his cousin, Dr Mike Gow.

Defacto Dentists is a directory website connecting patients searching for a dentist with local practices. The site generates thousands of enquiries and hundreds of appointments for dental practices across the UK. The best bit…practices can register for free and start receiving leads immediately.

InterDental TV is a website and YouTube channel for dentists. It gives them access to media content from interviews with industry leaders to clinical cases.

Your Dentist Recommends is an e-commerce website that gives dental practices the opportunity to earn commission for products they already recommend to patients from toothpaste and mouthwash to water flossers and electric toothbrushes. Clinicians simply send patients a suggested shopping basket based on their conversion with the patient, the patient orders the products online, and Your Dentist Recommends delivers the products directly to the patient. Dental practices are earning hundreds, sometimes thousands, of pounds without the need to stock any products at all.

Blue Glove Jobs is a dental recruitment website with a unique feature. Dental practices can list a position for free or upgrade to a video listing. Video listings give practices the opportunity to stand out and attract more candidates. Candidates are required to submit a video of themselves, giving practice owners or managers a better idea of what they’re like. This could save time by eliminating the need for an extra interview, give others within the practice the chance to evaluate the candidate, and, ultimately, make sure the right person is hired.

Net Zero Dentistry is on a mission to help the dental industry reduce their impact on the environment. Through its Awareness, Assessment, Education, Offsetting process, Net Zero Dentistry is helping practices reduce their carbon emissions, reduce single use plastics, reduce clinical waste, target a figure to achieve, and providing them with offsetting methods which are more effective, more sustainable, and have a higher impact versus other offerings.

Marcus shares his number one piece of advice for any associate dentists thinking about buying or starting their own dental practice.

In this episode, Mike is joined by Dr Mike Heffernan - Specialist in Prosthodontics, Harley Street practice owner, and Co-Founder of Dr Heff’s Remarkable Mints. Mike’s remarkable career has taken him to the US where he specialised at the University of Iowa, led him to part-owning a prestigious dental practice on London’s Harley Street, and drove him to build a fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) brand.

Mike kicks the episode off by sharing details of his childhood. The son of immigrant Irish parents and one of five brothers, Mike’s family owned and operated a bakery. He says it was brilliant growing up surrounded by delicious cakes, but less brilliant for his teeth with an endless supply of sugar.

Keen to pursue a career that utilised his hands - but didn’t give him unlimited access to sticky buns and sugar coated doughnuts - Mike trained as a dentist and graduated from Guy’s Hospital in 1990. He worked as an associate for several years before deciding to become a Specialist. He relocated to the US to specialise in Prosthodontics.

When it was time to move back to the UK, Mike made the crazy decision to invest in a Harley Street dental clinic that he’d never set foot in. He learnt a lot as a Co-Principal, but after 5 years of living in central London, Mike had had enough and was presented with an excellent opportunity to relocate his young family to the South Coast.

In 2018, Mike took a 9-month sabbatical which saw him and his family exploring South America. They learnt Spanish in Costa Rica and were captivated by Argentina.

Various commitments brought Mike back to the UK and he soon split his time between an associate role and renting a room on Harley Street. It’s during this time that he co-founded Dr Heff’s Mints with Dr. Toby Edwards-Lunn.

Mike’s wife was really into juices and smoothies, but would often complain about her teeth feeling “hairy”. Mike being a dentist knew this was actually the sugars in the juices and smoothies breaking down her teeth enamel. This inspired him to create a dental supplement in the form of mints.

Dr Heff’s Remarkable Mints is researching new products and looking to expand beyond the UK. Mike’s love for research will likely see him devote more time to the business and less time practising dentistry.

Towards the end, Mike briefly describes the content marketing company he and his wife have launched; Praxis Content. For a one-off fee or monthly subscription, dental practices can get access to a monthly newsletter full of useful oral health information that they can send to existing patients to improve communication, boost loyalty, and, ultimately, increase sales.

Dr Heffernan shares his number one piece of advice for any associate dentists thinking about buying or starting their own dental practice.

In this episode, Mike is joined by Adam Smith - Co-Founder and Director of Sales at EnquiryBot; an advanced, automated chatbot and sales management system which increases website enquiries by at least 240% and returns an annual ROI in around 4 weeks.

Adam discusses his background in golf and hospitality, and how his experiences helped him get to grips with dentistry faster.

He explains what a chatbot is, and identifies the different types of “chat” you can find on a website. Adam then talks about the history of chatbots which were pioneered by large corporations with big budgets, and how this created problems for SMEs looking to benefit from the technology.

Adam then dives into why he started EnquiryBot with his Co-Founders, Elliot Hamilton and John King, and how they overcame several challenges with chatbots. He also gives an overview of the lead management system on the backend of the chatbot which helps businesses more effectively manage enquiries.

Mike and Adam then discuss the importance of speed when it comes to following up with enquiries and how EnquiryBot’s automated response emails can improve your chances of converting an enquiry into a sale.

He then explains exactly how EnquiryBot is helping dental practices turn more enquiries into patients. EnquiryBot works for many different industries, but dentistry is EnquiryBot’s largest sector.

At the end of the podcast, Adam shares his number one piece of advice for any associate dentists thinking about buying or starting their own dental practice.

In this episode, Mike is joined by Dr Brett Wells - Owner of Wells Family Dental Group and Founder of DentalHQ; an online platform helping group practices and DSOs create and manage their own dental membership plans.

Brett introduces himself as a dentist by trade and entrepreneur by passion, and it’s easy to see why. He’s a highly skilled clinician and savvy businessman who started his first practice from scratch after just 6 months as an associate, opened a second practice only several years later, started and sold a gourmet hotdog restaurant, grew two practices into a group, and founded a tech company to solve problems he was facing and help other practice groups and DSOs.

Dr Wells shares how work experience with a friend’s dad - who was a dentist - gave him the jumpstart he needed to go from coasting at school to being a driven dental graduate. He describes why he started his own practice from scratch after only a few months as an associate and how casual beers with a buddy led them to opening a practice in Downtown Raleigh. Brett would eventually become the majority owner after realising the business needed a single decision maker.

Brett’s foray into the food industry with a gourmet hotdog restaurant - which he sold after a few years - taught him one of his biggest lessons; if you’re going to have multiple businesses, you need to give the operator of each business a stake in the company for it to truly succeed. Anyone you trust to run a business for you, needs to have a vested interest.

He explains that he founded DentalHQ to solve the problems he was facing as the owner of a group of practices and decided to share it with fellow group practice and DSO operators. As a visionary, Brett knows he needs to bring in “executors” to help him realise his many ideas. He recently brought in a senior exec team at DentalHQ to take the SaaS company to the next level with a whole raft of exciting updates.

At the end of the podcast, Brett shares his number one piece of advice for any associate dentists thinking about buying or starting their own dental practice.

If you have any questions regarding practice ownership, DentalHQ, or hotdogs, then reach out to Dr Brett Wells.

In this episode, Mike is joined by Dr Hussein Shaffie - Principal Dentist of Bexleyheath Dental Practice and The Sandford Implant and Cosmetic Centre. Hussein is passionate about cooking and has a YouTube channel called The Hungry Dentist. Dr Shaffie was born and raised in Iran, and was exposed to business from a young age. Hussein would regularly help his father who owned a chicken farm. When he was just 9 years old, Hussein’s father proposed a partnership with his son; if he raised a baby goat, he would receive half the money they received from selling said goat. He learnt the value of hard work.

Hussein discusses why he chose to pursue a career in dentistry and his time studying dentistry in Sweden. After struggling to find a job in Sweden, he moved his young family to the UK. Within three months of arriving in the UK, Hussein had found a position as an associate dentist and offered to buy a practice from the owner. Better yet, he had no money and asked for a loan from the owner which he paid back in full in just seven months.

He talks about the downsides of working too hard to achieve success; namely getting divorced from his first wife and not spending enough time with his children as they grew up. Hussein is unbelievably open about this period of his life, and impacts his advice for new and aspiring dentists at the end of the episode.

Hussein describes how he learnt the hard way that you shouldn’t rely on handshakes when it comes to business arrangements after being burnt by “friends” and their spouses. In fact, he insists you always sign a contract!

Dr Shaffie talks about how he grew his first practice from one to twelve surgeries in six years, including the unique way in which he separated NHS patients from private patients. He also talks about buying his second practice and his plans for expansion.

Towards the end of the episode, Hussein proudly talks about how his team handled emergencies during the height of the pandemic, why hiring and retaining staff in a ‘Work from Home’ world is so difficult, and how his love for cooking led to a YouTube channel called The Hungry Dentist.

Finally, Hussein shares his number one piece of advice (which turns into a few value nuggets) for any associate dentists thinking about buying or starting their own dental practice.

In this episode, Mike is joined by Dr Ferhan Ahmed - Principal Dentist of Edinburgh Dental, Implant Trainer & Mentor, and Author of the book, Being Unstoppable.

Ferhan has an incredible mind and is unbelievably driven to grow as an individual, as a clinician, as a teacher, and as a leader. He credits his strict morning routine - which includes waking up at 5am and running every day - with helping him get more done and pushing him closer to his potential.

Dr Ahmed drops quotes throughout the episode from inspirational leaders such as Warren Buffet, Mahatma Gandhi, and Steve Jobs, and recommends several must-read books including Atomic Habits by James Clear.

He talks about his childhood and his parents, and how he wanted to make them proud when choosing his future career. Not only did he qualify as a dentist in 2005, an interest in oral and maxillofacial surgery then led to him becoming dual qualified in medicine in 2012.

During his 20s and early 30s, Ferhan often sacrificed income in favour of gaining experience and learning on the job. He believes this early sacrifice and the ability to see the bigger picture, is paying off at this stage of his career.

After studying medicine, Ferhan had the opportunity to grow a mini corporate of 6 dental practices, but recently sold the last of 5 locations and bought out his partners to become the sole owner of Edinburgh Dental. He discusses the highs and lows of being a practice owner.

Focusing on a single practice has given him more time to focus on his passion of teaching implants. At any one time, there are 150 dentists benefiting from his programs, and he is personally mentoring 15-20 students. It’s safe to say he’s having a positive impact on these individuals, their patients, and dentistry in general.

Dr Ahed briefly talks about his book, Being Unstoppable - The Mindset of a Great Clinician, and the amazing cause that’s close to his heart and being supported by book sales, Dental Aid Network.

Finally, Ferhan shares his number one piece of advice for any associate dentists thinking about buying or starting their own dental practice.

In this episode, Mike is joined by Dr Simon Gallier - Managing Partner of Future Health Partnership. Future Health Partnership utilises an employee ownership/partnership model and currently has 4 practices located in the North of Wales, Chester, and just outside Bolton.

Simon qualified as a dentist in 1982, served in the Parachute Regiment, and previously owned a dental and whole body aesthetics clinic on Harley Street in London. He developed the concept of direct access in 2007 after working with Superdrug to put hygiene, whitening, and aesthetic clinics in their stores. Also in 2007 he took part in the Polar Challenge – a 320 mile race, on skis to the magnetic North Pole.

Simon recounts why he became a dentist and why he chose to serve in the military during his first few years as an associate. Dr Gallier talks about all of his adventures in the army and how he continued to pursue challenges even after he left. He explains how dentistry in the armed forces is very similar to private dentistry, and why his first year in the NHS was an eye opener that led to him quitting NHS dentistry after just 1 year.

Dr Gallier discusses his first foray into practice ownership and what he learnt during the first few years, and why he expanded beyond a single location before selling.

Simon then tells Mike all about his latest venture, Future Health Partnership - a completely new way to run a dental practice modelled on John Lewis. He believes private equity is ruining dentistry - venture capital firms prioritise profit over patient care. Dr Gallier and his partners think the only way to solve this problem is by giving dental practice staff a stake in the practice they work in to boost motivation and promote loyalty.

Finally, Simon shares his number one piece of advice for any associate dentists thinking about buying or starting a dental practice - his advice might surprise a few people!

If you have any questions about Future Health Partnership or the business of dentistry in general, Simon is more than happy to hear from you!

In today’s episode, Mike is joined by Dr Karl Walker-Finch - Associate Dentist, Mentor, Lecturer, Blogger, and soon to be Author. This is a fantastic episode because at the time of recording, Karl was actually in the process of buying his first dental practice. Knowing we would be releasing this episode only after the sale was completed allowed Karl to be open and honest about his experience.

Karl explains how he first got into dentistry and how his passion for dental implants came about. Not only did he obtain a Masters in Dental Implantology, but he also helps and inspires the next generation of dentists interested in implants as a lecturer and mentor on the MSc in Dental Implantology at ICE in Manchester.

He describes how blogging during lockdown motivated him to write a book all about the challenges facing dentists and ways to overcome them.

On top of all that, Karl explains why he was buying a dental practice and why now was the right time. He discusses how his practice will be different by combining dentistry and counselling. Karl provides a detailed picture of the buying process from the perspective of the buyer and highlights the many challenges and delays.

Karl will be back on the podcast in several months to tell us all about his experience of getting the keys, stepping into the practice for the first time as the owner, and how he’s been putting his stamp on the business.

Finally, Karl shares his number one piece of advice for any associate thinking about buying or starting a dental practice.

Mike is joined by Sherrine Washington - founder and owner of REAL TALK Sales Consulting. Sherrine is a former Therapist turned award-winning, multi-million-dollar master sales coach & trainer. With Sherrine’s help Dentists and Treatment Coordinators can learn how to close five-figure cases on the same day of the consultation, and get paid in full!

Sherrine shares the life changing experience that not only transformed her health, but also inspired her to change the lives of so many Treatment Coordinators by giving them the confidence to have real conversations with patients and openly discuss finances.

During the episode, Sherrine breaks down exactly what the role of a Treatment Coordinator/Patient Concierge involves, and how it fits within the dynamic of a dental practice. She points out that a lack of respect for the role often leads to individuals having split roles - which dilutes the power of a Treatment Coordinator.

Sherrine highlights the negative consequences of having the wrong Treatment Coordinator or not giving your Treatment Coordinator the right training. She recalls the situation of one particular Treatment Coordinator who would hope the patient would decide to go home and not convert, so they wouldn’t have to talk about money; leaving thousands of dollars on the table.

Sherrine explains when a brand new squat practice should hire a Treatment Coordinator, before she shares her number one piece of advice for practice owners.

If you want to grow your dental office and convert more leads into patients, then you need Sherrine Washington’s help to turn your Treatment Coordinator into a sales rockstar.

On this week’s episode, Mike is joined by Adrian Dray - the go to data protection and GDPR expert for dental practices. Before setting up his own consultancy, he was the data protection officer for over 600 corporate and independently owned dental practices.

Data protection and GDPR can be quite dry subjects, but Adrian has found a way to make them engaging. If you haven’t seen any of his social media posts, then you’re missing out! Adrian regularly delivers training to dental teams up and down the country. And on top of that, he’s a really nice guy and great to talk to.

Adrian begins by explaining what data protection and GDPR actually are, and it’s not long before he drops one of his “hard truths”; that it’s impossible for any dental practice or business to be 100% compliant with data protection and GDPR.

He discusses what can happen if a dental practice gets data protection and GDPR wrong, and provides actionable advice on how practices can protect themselves.

Adrian then sets out what you should do from a data protection and GDPR when setting up a squat practice or if you buy an established practice.

Before wrapping up, Adrian touches on some of the other threats facing dental practices.

Listen to the end for Adrian’s number one piece of advice for new and aspiring practice owners.

On this week’s episode, Mike is joined by income protection specialist, Warren Robins. Warren is the co-founder of MediDent Financial Services which helps Dentists and medical professionals save thousands on their income protection policies and other insurances.

Warren starts off by explaining what income protection is and why it’s important for Dentists, before stating why it’s even more important for new practice owners. He then goes on to explain the difference between income protection and critical illness insurance, and why income protection is the safer bet in most scenarios.

Then it gets really interesting. Warren explains why Dentists should be wary of the main income protection providers who hide premium increases in the small print. Essentially, the full cost of cover presented to Dentists is significantly less than what they will actually pay. In fact, on average, Warren is able to save Dentists £40k over the term of their cover!

This may sound too good to be true, but Warren has all the facts and data to back it up.

Warren points out that your monthly premiums are likely to ramp up once you hit 40 and that you can still save money by switching income protection providers even in your 50s - provided you don’t have any pre-existing medical conditions.

He blows Mike’s mind with a story of how he saved one particular Dentist £100k by switching providers, before revealing a smart way to protect your retirement plans.

This was an eye-opening conversation with a guy who really knows his stuff, offers quality financial advice, and really cares about his clients.

If you want to save money on your income protection policy, then get in touch with Warren today.

This week Mike is joined by business advisor, Matt Fox, from Cultivate Advisors. Cultivate is a Chicago-based consultancy offering small business owners tailored 1:1 advice, access to hundreds of resources, and connecting them to a community of like-minded business owners to help them grow their business at an exponential rate.

Matt describes some of the common challenges facing entrepreneurs, including wearing all the hats and starting a “passion” business. He then explains how digging into a business - particularly where a business currently is, where the owner wants to get to, and how fast - is important for creating a roadmap to move forward.

Mike & Matt discuss how accountability plays a big role in the success of a business, especially when the owner seeks outside assistance. Matt then stresses the importance of making business decisions based on financials; does this make financial sense? Will it get an ROI?

He talks about the need to hire or partner with people that compliment your own skill set; no one is good at everything. Matt explains the need for any business owner to spend time working “on” the business and not just “in” the business and how the business owner's exit strategy can have a huge influence on how business is approached.

Matt points out that sometimes just getting someone with a different perspective to look at your business can be a game changer and how dangerous it can be to make decisions based on emotions.

He highlights three red flags when looking to find the right business advisor for your business, before sharing a few success stories of his own.

Finally, Mike & Matt chat about how a shift in mindset can unlock the full potential of a business.

Pete “DeconPete” Gibbons joins Mike on this weeks episode to talk all about infection prevention and control.

DeconPete gives a great explanation of what infection prevention and control is, and why it’s so important within a dental practice.

He describes the challenges facing dental teams when implementing infection protection measures, before discussing upcoming changes to regulations which many practices are not ready for.

Pete describes what a new squat practice needs to do in order to pass a first CQC inspection. This includes a detailed walkthrough of an ideal local decontamination unit (LDU) including rough investment cost.

Finally, DeconPete explains the steps any new Principal should take as soon as they get the keys to their new practice; from auditing what’s already happening to getting existing staff trained up.

Pete is super passionate about helping dental practices navigate the sometimes misunderstood world of infection prevention and control, and you can hear that is the way he speaks. He also has an incredible knack for explaining complex things in layman’s terms.

Mike is joined by co-host, Dr Sahil Thakkar - Principal Dentist at Dickens Yard Dental. Sahil opened his fully private squat practice in April 2021 and immediately set about building a team.

Associate Dentists generally don't have any experience of hiring (or firing) employees before they become practice owers, so they very much learn on the job.

Sahil talks in depth about how he grew his team to 7 members including what he looks for in individuals and how he hired them.

Towards the end of the podcast, Sahil outlines who he needs to hire next in order to grow the practice.

Mike is joined by Claire Frisby & Robiha Nazir from PracticeSuccess to discuss how a patient's first interaction with your team can make or break any future relationship before they've even stepped foot inside your practice.

Discover how having the best TCO in your area and spending thousands on marketing can mean little, if your receptionist or front of house deal with patient phone calls poorly.

Learn how your receptionist should answer the telephone including a rough script and tips & tricks. Plus suggestions on how to handle common scenarios from putting patients on hold to transferring them to a colleague.

In my opinion, the most valuable part of our conversation was all about trying to convert individuals enquiring about NHS treatment (dental insurance) into private patients.

Based on Claire's secret shopper research for PatientBoost, almost no private practices make any attempt to educate leads on the benefits of private dentistry, if they first mention the NHS. Assumptions around what people can afford, could be costing your practice dearly!

This is a great episode with two highly experienced and well respected individuals within the dental community. I can't wait to have them both on the podcast again!

Mike & Sahil discuss why it’s important to have a business plan when setting up a squat practice (or buying a practice). They then talk through the actual business plan Sahil created to secure funding for his own practice.

You'll learn what to include in a business plan, why each section is important, and how to collect the information for certain sections.

This turned into a longer than planned conversation, so we've split it into 3 parts. Parts 1 & 2 are about the business plan itself, while part 3 covers the financial projections that accompany the business plan.

Sahil provides a lot of value, so I hope you're taking notes!
