What if you're asked: "Who are you?" The automatic response is to give your name and perhaps your profession or where you're from. By giving these details, you feel you've answered that question.

But the answer is incorrect. Your name, profession, where you're from isn't you. This guided meditation can inspire you to find our truth, beyond the persona you share with the world. It's based on Plato's "The Phaedo" .

Here he presents his argument for "metempsychosis", as well as a few statements about the ethics of obeying the law. He gives arguments for why the Soul is eternal and therefore cannot be destroyed, and migrates across different bodies. In "The Meno" he argues that this is how we should account for innate, a priori knowledge, and why we must act with Virtue/Honorably.

One of the most advocated routines by the Stoics is to take time to look inward, examine, and reflect. The best times to do that? In the morning after rising and in the evening before you go to bed. Epictetus advises to rehearse the day in the morning, and then review your progress in the evening. At daybreak, we should ask ourselves a few questions, watch the video to find out what those are!

In today's relaxing guided meditation, we focus on how the Stoics used physical exertion as a way to practice and expand their resilience. Much like a muscle growing stronger with use, the mind can grow its ability to remain in a calm emotional state if repeatedly exposed to voluntary hardship. Epictetus used the analogy of “Hard Winter Training.”

In today’s meditation, we will reflect on the Greek philosophy practice, (especially the Stoic School ) of envisioning all the things that can go wrong, which the Romans later called "Premeditatio Malorum". Why should we practice this? A) To be better prepared B) To feel more grateful for all the things that are going well in our life.

In today’s meditation, we will reflect on the Greek Philosophy notion that the only secure source of happiness and freedom is your inner world. This is because everything outside of you can be taken away. Therefore, it is foolish to trust your happiness and wellbeing to that which is outside your control. Real power can’t be taken away—not by the economy or by an election or by anything else. A weak person is dependent on the moods of the crowd, on the stock market or on the weather, but a philosopher—a lover of wisdom focuses their happiness on their principles.

In today's relaxing, healing guided meditation we reflect on "Memento Mori"—the ancient Greek practice of reflection on mortality. It goes back to Socrates, who said that the proper practice of philosophy is “about nothing else but dying and being dead.” This death, of course, could be not only natural, but also the death of the Ego. Later on, the Stoic school adopted this practice, and named it "Memento Mori' in Latin, (Remberance of our imminent death). It was considered The key to our freedom—as Montaigne put it "....A person who has learned how to die has unlearned how to be a slave.”

In this week's deeply relaxing guided meditation, we go over Plato's liberating concept of "View from Above". As Marcus Aurelius, wrote in Meditations, 7.48, "How beautifully Plato put it. Whenever you want to talk about people, it’s best to take a bird’s-eye view and see everything all at once—of gatherings, armies, farms, weddings and divorces, births and deaths, noisy courtrooms or silent spaces, every foreign people, holidays, memorials, markets—all blended together and arranged in a pairing of opposites..." This change of perspective from the individual to “the Whole” has the capacity to change us in fundamental ways. When we take it seriously, it can turn “this human life of ours upside down” (as Plato says in his dialogue Gorgias, line 481c). It can produce inner peace and freedom, replacing anger and pain with compassion and love, even when we are most hurt.

In this week's relaxing guided meditation, we will reflect on the impermanence of things. Heraclitus taught that "We never step into the same river twice." Find out why its so important to understand this in order to contain and overcome fear, anxiety and depression like the Stoics.

In today's guided meditation, we reflect on the lesson of Greek / Stoic philosophy that says that everything that's happening in your life, is happening FOR you, not TO you... Imagine that you are a fire-without logs being thrown into the fire, the fire dies. We need these challenges, to bring out the best in us, to practice Virtue ('Arete' in Greek). Marcus Aurelius's note to himself summarises it beautifully, "The impediment to action advances actions. What stands in the way, becomes the way." For philosophers, the REAL purpose of our life is not to be "successful" (as an end in itself) , but to flourish and be fulfilled ('Eudaimonia' in Greek), and this can only be done through practicing Arete

In this week's guided meditation, we reflect on the the Stoic Art of Acquiescence; Accepting and loving whatever is happening, by focusing on a a quote by famous Stoic philosopher Marcus Aurelius, " Oh world, I am in tune with every note of the great harmony. For me nothing is early, nothing late, if it be timely for Thee. Oh Nature, all that thy seasons yield is fruit for me."

“Don’t explain your philosophy. Embody it.” - Epictetus American philosopher Henry David Thoreau conveyed the problem of modern western philosophy in his book Walden, Life in the Woods.

“There are nowadays professors of philosophy, but not philosophers. To be a philosopher is not merely to have subtle thoughts, [. . .] but to so love wisdom as to live according to its dictates, a life of simplicity, independence, magnanimity, and trust. It is to solve some of the problems of life, not only theoretically, but practically."

In other words, modern philosophy has become a discourse about philosophy.

Philosophy is a practice not a theory.

The Askesis cultivate Prosochē (attention, focus - discussed at the end of the section on Ethos, “Words to live by”).

"When you relax your attention for a while, do not fancy you will recover it whenever you please, but remember this, that because of your fault of today your affairs must necessarily be in a worse condition in future occasions". -Epictetus (Discourses 4.12.1)

In time, as you develop and deepen the attitude and practice of prosochē, you will become a prokoptōn (one who is making progress).

The practice of self-observation, does not demand perfection. It demands that one does it. Prosoche requires attention and focus. The goal of the prokoptōn is continual progress - “Ever to excel” (Greek: “Αιέν αριστεύειν”)

Viktor Frankl the great psychiatrist, who survived the concentration camps, wrote in his book, "Man's Search For Meaning", that the key to happiness is to have a purpose in our life. But your life purpose doesn't have to be something complicated, it could just be as simple as being a source of peace in the world.

Hello & Welcome to my podcast. I’m Alkistis Agio speaking to you from Greece.

This is an opportunity to transform any fear and anxiety you may be experiencing lately, into a state of inner freedom.

My podcasts usually take 2 forms: Either they are a recording of an inspiring, informative discussion with an esteemed guest or in the form of a deeply relaxing guided meditation.

Today’s session is a guided meditation. I have recorded the first 3 minutes, while filming in the ancient amphitheater and there are crickets in the background, but afterwards, the recording will switch to a quiet setting indoors, recorded here, in my small studio.
