In this deeply personal and expansive conversation, John Marshall sits down with Dr. Sohee Jun, leadership coach, organizational psychologist, and bestselling author, to explore what authentic power actually looks like from the inside out. Drawing from more than 25 years of coaching highly accomplished women and her own journey as a bridge generation immigrant, Dr. Sohee unpacks why outward success so often masks internal noise, how the "shoulds" we inherit shape the way we lead, and what it genuinely means to bring your thinking, your words, and your actions into alignment. The conversation moves from Gandhi to polyvagal theory, from confirmation bias to body awareness, from transactional achievement to the freedom that comes from releasing attachment to outcomes. Rich, honest, and full of lived wisdom, this episode is an essential listen for any leader who suspects that the most important work they could do is not on their calendar yet.

Takeaways

  • Despite outward achievement, many highly accomplished leaders carry an internal narrative of not being enough, and that gap between outer success and inner alignment is exactly where the real work begins.
  • Alignment, in Gandhi's words, is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony — and mindset is the place to start.
  • The "shoulds" we inherit from culture, family, and profession are often the loudest obstacle standing between a leader and their authentic power.
  • Feedback from trusted peers is one of the most accessible and underused tools for creating self-awareness, especially before a life-altering event forces that reflection.
  • The mid-career stall is often not a skills gap but a relationship and self-awareness gap — emotional intelligence, not technical performance, is what separates those who advance.
  • Authentic executive presence is not a performance style to be adopted; it is the natural expression of a leader who is grounded in who they actually are.
  • Tying your sense of self-worth to an outcome is the exact thing that prevents you from showing up with the confidence that would produce that outcome.
  • The body often signals incongruence before the mind catches up — learning to notice those physical cues is one of the most practical leadership skills available.
  • Releasing attachment to outcomes is not about lowering your ambition; it is about removing the transactional layer that strips authenticity from every interaction.
  • Get curious, give yourself compassion, and start where you are — the entry point to self-awareness looks different for every person, and all of them are valid.

In this candid and energizing conversation, John Marshall sits down with Jessica Miller Merrell, founder of Workology, president and CEO of Exceptional HR, and author of Digitizing Talent, to pull back the curtain on what HR professionals are actually carrying — and why so much of it stays invisible. Jess draws on decades of frontline HR experience to unpack the burnout epidemic in people operations, the gap between what companies say they invest in their people and what employees actually experience, and why HR leaders struggle to communicate their strategic value in the language of business. From logging every task in 30-minute increments to mastering the art of internal influence, this episode is a practical, honest, and deeply human guide for HR professionals who are ready to stop doing everything and start driving real change. Whether you lead an HR team or work alongside one, this conversation will shift the way you see the role of people operations in building a thriving organization.

Takeaways

  • HR professionals are often carrying invisible workloads that would be unacceptable in any other department — and the first step to changing that is making it visible.
  • Connecting HR activities to revenue, retention, and time-to-productivity is the only language that consistently moves C-suite decision makers.
  • Burnout in HR is often a signal that leadership does not respect or understand the function — and consecutive short tenures in a CHRO role are a clear organizational red flag.
  • Moving from a human resources model to a people leadership model is more than a name change — it reflects a fundamental shift in how organizations value the human element of work.
  • Business acumen and the ability to influence are the two most underdeveloped skills in the HR profession, and both can be learned.
  • Logging tasks in 30-minute increments for even a few days can reveal hidden hours and build a compelling story for leadership investment.
  • Knowledge gatekeeping is real at every level of leadership — and breaking that pattern by sharing best practices is both a leadership and a cultural act.
  • Leaders who share what went wrong, not just what went right, create the psychological safety that makes teams want to follow them.
  • Building discoverability before you need a job — through video, podcasts, or writing — helps candidates and leaders stand out in a world flooded with AI-generated sameness.
  • One 20-minute conversation between an executive and their HR team, followed by action on just one thing, can begin to rebuild trust and reposition people operations as a true strategic partner.

In this compelling conversation, John Marshall sits down with Dr. Angela Jackson, Harvard lecturer, researcher, and founder and CEO of Future Forward Institute, to explore what it actually takes to build a workplace where people and performance thrive together. Drawing from research across more than 1,700 companies, Dr. Jackson shares the nine pillars of her Win-Win Workplace framework — a data-driven, deeply human roadmap for leaders and organizations ready to close the gap between what they say about their people and what they actually do for them. From centering employee voice and reimagining benefits, to activating frontline managers and building the kind of trust that feeds an organization like oxygen, this conversation challenges the outdated zero-sum model of work and replaces it with something far more sustainable. Packed with real case studies, tangible data points, and practical first steps for culture carriers at every level, this episode is essential listening for anyone who believes that the best businesses are built on the best people practices.

Takeaways

  • Performance and well-being are not in conflict — the data shows they reinforce each other when the right practices are in place.
  • Centering employee voice is the foundational pillar because everything else built on top of it only works if people trust that they are actually being heard.
  • Companies are spending billions on employee listening programs while nearly two thirds of workers still feel their company does not care about them — that gap is the opportunity.
  • Trust is the most important nutrient feeding a high-performing organization, and it is built or eroded in micro moments every single day.
  • Reimagining benefits means asking what people actually need today, not what looked good on a benefits brochure five years ago.
  • Most frontline managers were never trained to manage people — they were simply promoted for being great individual contributors.
  • Voluntary turnover data is one of the most powerful tools a culture carrier can bring to a C-suite conversation to make the cost of disengagement undeniable.
  • The best organizations invest in learn-it-all cultures and measure people practices with the same rigor they apply to financial performance.
  • Pillar nine — distributed leadership and an ownership mindset — is not a destination but a continuous loop that requires ongoing investment and attention.
  • Being present with your people, tracking two to three data points per direct report, and asking how they are really doing costs nothing and changes everything.

In this episode of The Present Professional, John Marshall speaks with Erik Berglund, founder of The Language of Leadership and Loominary AI, about the future of leadership development through AI powered practice. Erik shares how his work evolved from coaching leaders on accountability and communication into building skill simulation systems that help people practice real workplace conversations in a psychologically safe environment.

Together, they explore why traditional training often fails to create lasting behavior change, how the eight critical leadership conversations can transform team performance, and why simulation, feedback, and repetition are essential for true skill development. They also discuss the role of psychological safety, the difference between accountability and conflict, and how AI can help organizations scale leadership training and talent development.

Takeaways

  • Leadership development improves when people can practice real conversations, not just hear ideas about them.
  • Psychological safety is essential for effective simulation and skill building.
  • The eight critical leadership conversations create a framework for stronger teams and clearer expectations.
  • AI can help scale practical leadership training across organizations.
  • Accountability is not the same as conflict, and recognizing the difference changes how leaders respond.
  • Excuses often reveal a development opportunity, not just resistance.
  • Professional skill intelligence can help organizations understand where to invest training time and budget.

In this rich and wide-ranging conversation, John Marshall sits down with Kevin Asbjornson, global leadership development professional, executive coach, keynote speaker, and performing artist, to explore what it truly means to lead with emotional intelligence in the 21st century. Kevin draws on a career spanning more than 70 countries and a lifelong parallel passion for music to make a compelling case that leadership is both an art and a science — and that most organizations have been over-investing in the science while leaving the art largely untouched. He shares his signature Eight Keys to Inspired Leadership model, the powerful practice of using original piano compositions to develop emotional awareness in leaders, and the critical distinction between a leader's tune and their tone. From practical steps for accessing emotional intelligence assessments, to how the best organizations build learn-it-all cultures and measure leadership impact along the way, this episode is a masterclass in what human-centric leadership actually looks like in practice.

Daniel Goleman's What Makes a Leader

Connect with Kevin Asbjornson: LinkedIn | Website

Takeaways

  • Leadership is both an art and a science, and most organizations have over-invested in the science at the expense of the art.
  • People hear your tune, but they feel your tone — and when those two are out of alignment, connection breaks down.
  • Emotional intelligence is not something we are born with; it is learned through experience and developed intentionally over time.
  • The five pillars of emotional intelligence are self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills — and intrapersonal intelligence must come before interpersonal impact.
  • Leaders inspire people; people motivate themselves — and that distinction changes everything about how we approach leadership development.
  • Closing the gap between identity and reputation is one of the most transformative things a leader can do for their team and their organization.
  • Real-time feedback throughout a coaching engagement is more powerful than waiting for results at the end of the process.
  • The three most common leadership refinements are shifting from tune to tone, distinguishing between urgent and important, and slowing down pace to better connect with the audience.
  • The best organizations invest in learn-it-all cultures rather than know-it-all cultures, and they make emotional intelligence a measurable organizational priority.
  • Leadership effectiveness at work is directly connected to how we show up at home — life, career, and well-being are not separate categories.

In this vibrant and deeply personal conversation, John Marshall sits down with Natalie Spiro, founder and CEO of Drum Cafe North America and CEO of Blue Fire Leadership, to explore how rhythm, community, and intentional connection can transform the way teams and organizations operate. Natalie shares her remarkable journey from growing up in apartheid South Africa to building a thriving corporate team building enterprise out of her garage in San Diego, one drum circle at a time. Drawing on her background in organizational psychology, executive coaching, and Gallup CliftonStrengths, she unpacks the science behind rhythm as a unifying force and offers practical strategies for leaders who want to build deeper connection within their teams. From a resistant employee who became the first to take the stage, to delivering an unforgettable event for Google in Nairobi with borrowed drums tuned over an open fire, Natalie's stories remind us that when people feel seen, heard, and connected, performance follows naturally.

Connect with Natalie Spiro: Website

Takeaways

  • Rhythm is a universal language that connects people at a level deeper than words.
  • Community is not a nice to have for teams — it is the foundation of high performance.
  • Leaders who show genuine curiosity about their team members unlock engagement that no incentive program can replicate.
  • Manifesting your future requires both intentional vision and the courage to act when opportunity appears.
  • Self-care is not a luxury — it is the energy source that allows leaders to show up fully for others.
  • The most powerful team building moments come from going deeper than surface level stories.
  • Resilience is built through relationships, not in isolation.
  • When you are truly present with someone, they feel it — and that feeling builds trust.
  • Pivoting in the face of loss is not giving up; it is the most strategic thing a leader can do.
  • If you want to run fast, run alone — but if you want to run far, run together.

In this returning conversation, John Marshall sits down with Humessence coach, leadership development expert, and author Brett Larson to unpack what it truly means to lead people rather than manage them. Brett traces his journey from industrial engineer to plant leader at WL Gore, one of Fortune's most consistently recognized employers, where he learned that leadership is not defined by title but by followership. He shares how emotional intelligence became the cornerstone of the leadership development program he built, how values only mean something when they are woven into the systems and behaviors of an organization, and how a culture of direct, compassionate feedback can drive both human connection and measurable business performance. From a 97% team satisfaction score to real improvements in yield and efficiency, Brett makes a compelling case that the human side of leadership and the results side are not in conflict — they are the same thing.

Discovering Leaders Within by Brett Larson

Takeaways

  • Leadership is not granted by title — it is earned through followership, service, and trust.
  • The first mistake many new leaders make is solving problems instead of leading people.
  • Values only hold meaning when they are systematized into performance, feedback, and day-to-day behavior.
  • Emotional intelligence is teachable, and it is the single most important differentiator between good and great leadership.
  • Selling a new idea internally requires the same emotional intelligence you are trying to teach — listen, welcome challenge, and answer the why.
  • Empowerment does not mean walking away — it means consistent check-ins, balanced feedback, and genuine investment in your people's growth.
  • Direct and compassionate feedback is one of the most powerful acts of respect one person can show another.
  • When team members give feedback upward, it is a sign that the culture is working — not a sign of disruption.
  • A psychologically safe culture is not soft — it directly correlates with higher yields, lower costs, and stronger engagement.
  • Helping people find the truth for themselves is always more powerful than telling them what to fix.

In this timely and practical conversation, John Marshall sits down with Rachel Krug, Humessence coach and seasoned growth operator, to pull back the curtain on what really happens inside companies during mergers and acquisitions. Drawing from four distinct M&A experiences — as an acquiree, an acquirer, and everything in between — Rachel shares candid lessons on why the real work begins after the deal closes, not before. From decoding cultural differences and running listening tours, to coaching executives on purposeful communication and supporting HR leaders who are holding everyone else together while navigating their own uncertainty, this episode is an essential listen for anyone leading people through organizational change. Rachel makes a compelling case that M&A does not have to be purely a business transaction — it can and should be a deeply human centered experience.

Connect with Rachel Krug: Website

Takeaways

  • Post-acquisition uncertainty is normal and HR leaders play a critical role in helping teams understand that.
  • The work of integration begins on day zero — and the acquiring company rarely has everything figured out ahead of time.
  • Purposeful communication is more effective and more honest than blanket promises of transparency.
  • Telling the team about an acquisition too late can create shock and erode trust at the worst possible moment.
  • Studying the culture of both companies before the deal closes gives HR a significant advantage in managing the transition.
  • A listening tour with a cross section of the acquired company is one of the most powerful tools available to an HR leader post-deal.
  • Top performers need to be actively nurtured and incentivized to stay — the attitude that they are lucky to be retained is a retention risk.
  • Leaders should be coached to be intentional not just in what they say but in tone, body language, and how they frame the new company's future.
  • HR leaders need their own space to process the transition, and group coaching or individual coaching during this period can be transformative.
  • M&A can evolve from a business transaction into a human centered experience — and the HR leader is the one who can drive that shift.

In this episode of The Present Professional, we dive into the theme of personal responsibility in professional development. Host Tony reflects on his journey, tracing back to his high school years when he joined the Gents Program, an extracurricular initiative focused on developing young men. He discusses how this experience sparked his commitment to self-improvement and leadership. Together, we explore the importance of taking initiative in one's own development and the transformative power of actively seeking opportunities for growth. Tune in for insights on how to embrace personal responsibility and enhance your professional journey.

Synopsis
Taking responsibility for your own development is a proactive way to enhance both personal and professional growth. A key theme in the podcast episode centers on curiosity and the importance of saying yes to new opportunities.

Curiosity is a catalyst for growth. Tony recalls how his journey began in high school when he joined the Gents Program, spurred by curiosity about why others were involved. This sense of curiosity extended into college and his professional life, driving him to explore new opportunities for learning and growth. Curiosity helps individuals step out of their comfort zones and explore new ideas and experiences, which shape their development.

Saying yes to new opportunities is another essential part of personal development. In the podcast, both hosts discuss how they embraced this mindset. For instance, one host shared how saying yes to auditioning for a high school musical led to one of the best experiences of his life. This attitude of saying yes expanded his skill set and opened new avenues for self-expression. Similarly, Tony’s willingness to say yes to various roles and responsibilities throughout his career allowed him to continuously learn and grow.

John and Tony discuss how curiosity and saying yes often lead to transformative experiences. Both acknowledge that stepping into uncomfortable situations can lead to significant personal breakthroughs. For example, Tony shares how joining a step team and engaging in public speaking helped him overcome fears and develop resilience. These experiences equipped him with valuable skills for his personal and professional life.

Another important aspect discussed is the necessity of embracing discomfort. Tony shares that by actively seeking out environments where he felt uncomfortable, he was able to grow and develop. The episode emphasizes that personal growth often arises from moments of discomfort and challenge, and listeners are encouraged to embrace these moments as opportunities for profound insights and self-discovery.

In summary, taking responsibility for your own development involves curiosity, saying yes to new opportunities, and embracing discomfort. By nurturing these qualities, individuals can unlock transformative growth and enhance both their personal and professional lives. Although the journey may involve challenges, it is through these experiences that we discover our potential and continue our development.

In this episode of The Present Professional, We delve into the crucial topic of giving and receiving feedback in both personal and professional settings. We emphasize the importance of feedback for personal and professional growth, regardless of one's position within an organization. We highlight the need for tools and techniques to make the feedback experience constructive and empowering for all parties involved.

SynopsisFeedback plays a crucial role in communication within relationships, whether personal or professional. In a podcast episode, the hosts emphasized the importance of giving and receiving feedback mindfully. They discussed how feedback is essential for personal and professional development, as it helps individuals understand where they stand and provides insights on areas for improvement.

The hosts highlighted that feedback can come in various forms, such as evaluation, coaching, and appreciation. Evaluation involves letting someone know where they stand, while coaching focuses on specific areas for growth and improvement. Appreciation or acknowledgment involves recognizing and being specific about the positive aspects of someone's work or behavior.

Moreover, the episode delved into the concept of receiving feedback effectively. It discussed how individuals should approach feedback with an open mind, seeking to understand the observations and interpretations behind the feedback rather than focusing solely on the labels or judgments. By practicing empathy, communicating intentions clearly, and being specific in feedback delivery, both givers and receivers can enhance the feedback process.

Synopsis
Gravitas involves displaying confidence and courage, which are crucial for leaders to be a steadfast presence for their team. Communication is about clear and decisive expression, which is vital for gaining trust and ensuring the message is understood correctly. Appearance, while less emphasized, is still significant in aligning one's physical presence and behaviors with their leadership message.

Key topics include the importance of eliminating filler words to enhance clarity and decisiveness in communication. We share insights from a yoga teacher training exercise that heightened awareness of filler word usage. The power of strategic pauses and silence in presentations is also discussed, with an example of a leader commanding a room's attention by simply taking a moment to drink water.

Additionally, we highlight the value of leaders asking good questions and feeling confident in seeking clarification, thereby enhancing communication and leadership skills. The episode underscores the need to be aware of and actively work on these aspects to strengthen one's executive presence.

In this episode, we discuss the headwinds we face when setting and meeting our own deadlines. Procrastination can show up in so many sneaky ways. The best one is where we end up doing other things that feel productive to avoid the feeling of not showing up to do our real work. It can also help you slow down and bring about divergent thinking to create your best work after pausing on a project. On the other hand, it can lead to not fulfilling our dreams and purpose when it gets to a point where we've truly missed our opportunity.

We discuss strategies for progressing in the face of resistance and getting to work. The fear of failure is one major example of why our minds procrastinate. If we never get the work done, we never have to feel the potential pain of people's negative reactions to it. This is one of the many fears we'll talk about overcoming.

Tune in and get to work with us. We're working through these challenges together, and they show up differently for each of us, as you'll find through our different perspectives on the subject. Whatever the challenge you face the most when it comes to creating the life you want, know that you have what it takes to overcome it. Let's create.

In this episode, we discuss overcoming one of the key fears in becoming the best version of ourselves. We're tribal beings, and belonging has been important for our survival for millennia. Yet, this primal fear still lives within us and shows up to keep us small and living with the familiar.

We discuss strategies to step out of comparison and focus on becoming better than previous versions of ourselves. Also, tools to rationalize fears when our minds start to blow things out of proportion to increase resistance. Nurturing your network and stepping into new arenas to connect with the people that will get you where you want to be is on the other side of fear and comparison.

Many times in our lives, we've had to overcome the fear of rejection, and they have all led to stepping into spaces of opportunity. It comes down to having the audacity to ask for what you want. Maybe it's not the right time for you to have it, or perhaps the opportunity passed is a blessing in disguise, but you'll never find the one for you if you're hiding behind irrational fears.

This episode discusses the key takeaways from Martin Linsky and Ronald Heifetz's book, Leadership on the Line. The concepts in this book could not be more relevant with the pace of change. As the way we work and live rapidly evolves, it will not only produce technical problems with straightforward solutions. Instead, the challenges we will face are adaptive, requiring a fundamental shift in how we do business and navigate our worlds.

Leadership on the line presents the dangers of leadership for those with the courage to take on the toughest adaptive challenges of our time. While these insights serve the highest levels of organizational and governmental leadership, they will apply to anyone striving to make changes in their communities, schools, families, or anywhere they'll face opposition from those wanting to maintain the way things are.

People resist change through very human motivations. Listen to learn how to meet them where they are and create shifts adopted in due time and last. You're brave enough to lead. Let these strategies support the difference you want to make in your world, big or small.

Originally aired September 22nd, 2022, Becoming Resilient is more relevant than ever as we enter into Mental Health Awareness Month. Start being proactive with your mental health today by cultivating resilience in your life. Thank you for listening!

In this episode, we define what resilience means to us and then move straight into strategies we've utilized to become more resilient throughout our lives and careers, as well as those from the latest research.

Resilience starts with building your awareness. We get ourselves stuck in thought loops that do not serve us, lapsing into old stories from a fixed mindset like, "I'm not good enough" or "Nothing ever works out for me." Noticing these thoughts and stories coming up is the first battle. The next is beginning to question them. This awareness starts to separate us from the story, so we can look at the situations and challenges of our lives objectively and see them for what they are—temporary! It does not have to be about us because we're constantly changing along with the rest of the world.

We discuss different practices, principles, and perspectives to upgrade your resilience in facing the inevitable adversities of work and life. We may never be able to avoid them, but we can 100% of the time change the way we experience them.

Self-sabotage is a way of being that shows up in so many sneaky ways throughout our lives because, deep down, it is designed to keep us where we are. We hold ourselves back to remain in the familiar and avoid the uncertainty of growth. However, resigning from the flow of life will come up in the most subtle ways. In this episode, we'll unpack some of the most common ways that self-sabotage shows in our lives and our clients and give you the tools to recognize the fears, get to the root, integrate them, and move forward.

Developing self-awareness and noticing the inner voice is the first step to recognizing negative self-talk and choosing the change your story. It starts here, and then you can be an example for others and notice negative self-talk in others. From here, you can make a difference for others in your workplace and at home by helping others see the nuances of their language. Are you thinking and speaking about everything that is right with your life, or are you looking for what's wrong? The threats? Are you letting fear run your life? Listen if you're trying to move forward with faith.

In this episode, we discuss what Ben Horwitz calls "the struggle." We review his book, The Hard Thing About Hard Things, at a high level and unpack some concepts related to leading an organization, leading a team, and stepping into the unknown.

There are a lot of fears that come up when you're stepping into a leadership role, and there will be new challenges that await you every step of the way. This book and conversation offer insight into what to expect and what to do about it. We kick off the conversation with the courage development process, which is stepping into action despite your fears. The degree to which we can do this in various areas of life will dictate the quality of our experience and fulfillment.

In this episode, we discuss the regular tendencies or practices that mostly occur subconsciously and dictate our results. How do you set up your subconscious mind and environment to make the actions supporting your desired results easier to reach for? In this conversation, you'll understand how to start doing that in your everday life.

It's all about incrementalism. Doing a little bit each day and remaining consistent is far more important than intensity or duration. Learn how to develop this muscle over time, and forgive yourself for taking a step back to keep moving forward. It starts with a choice. What will yours be today?

In this episode, we discuss what balance really looks like in our lives. Balance is not an achieved state. It's a dance around equilibrium that we do weekly and daily. The key is something that we call macro mindfulness. We'll show you ways to look at your life objectively to see where you're committing time and energy.

Are you making balance a priority in your life? We talk about how meditation and increasing self-awareness can help you notice imbalances in your life. It starts with knowing what you value and are committed to, then having the tools and practices to notice when things are out of wack.

There's a misconception that balance is moving between work and rest. While this is sometimes the case and rest is critically important, an imbalance can be associated with inaction. Are you taking action in the right place in your life that represent your values, commitments, and purpose? Are you keeping the promises you make to yourself? These can all lead to burnout and imbalance.

Uncertainty is guaranteed in our lives. We can choose to fight that reality or be at peace with it. In this episode, we discuss our relationships with uncertainty, how that has shifted throughout our lives, and strategies for you to begin embracing uncertainty.

Anxiety around uncertainty is the fear of making the wrong choice in disguise. As humans, we have a profound ability that sets us apart from all other beings on this planet, the ability to forecast what may happen in our future. While this has helped us accomplish incredible things, it's also the primary source of our anxiety, fears, and worries. When we learn to let go of expectations and embrace the journey, the result begins to hold less weight on our decisions and way of life.

All of this comes with a foundation of basic trust. The trust that the universe is conspiring in your favor whether or not your current circumstances are painful or pleasant. What would your current circumstances be here to teach you if your life's purpose was to be here to learn? What might your soul need to experience here and now to grow spiritually? These questions can help us get curious about the present moment. Living in that place, we can drop expectations and make choices unattached to the result. The moments in our lives in hindsight that have created our experience thus far. Embrace them!

This episode discusses the powerful shift from viewing your work as a task-based exchange for a paycheck to a role that contributes to creating your career. We discuss our journeys through realizing this mindset shift and what helped us along the way, so you can fast-track aligning your decisions with a career path that feels good for you. Your career path will continue to evolve, shift, and elevate. The important part is to start on A path, and continue to learn about yourself, what you want, and the difference you want to make.

This is the long game. Are you going to commit to the process of building a career? Create a vision for your future that can change and embody the values you want to stand by when making tough decisions. When you have to sacrifice for a developmental opportunity or what you want at the time, that will be what you stand by. Discomfort, in hindsight, is often the best thing that's ever happened, and it can be appreciated as part of the Present Professional journey you're committed to.

We can't wait to hear what you think about this new technology. OpenAI has opened its chatbot to the general public for a research phase of the tech's production. If this is a research phase, it's almost scary to think of how powerful the commercial release could be. Join us to see how this tech could revolutionize life as we know it.

Imagine if you could have a conversation with your internet browser search, and it would return the answer to you in a conversational manner that you would easily understand. No more lists of links, one coherent response from a practically omniscient-level database that can learn and is eerily personable.

This research release is already going to have a massive ripple effect. We want you all to experience seeing what's coming because it's not if; it's when. Science fiction is no longer fiction, my friends!

In the second episode of our Lead From Any Level series, inspired by John Maxwell's The 360° Leader, we unpack the last layer of the three-part series, "Leading Across." We'll discuss our favorite strategies from our work-life perspectives and the material, so you get something to take into the office and home with you.

This episode brings everything full circle. No matter where you are in your organization, you will have people across from you. You'll benefit enormously from an external or personal board of directors if you're at the very top. How can you contribute to your peers, and what's the best position to be in for them to support you? How do your communication style and habits support this?

We'll be discussing what this looks like in theory and practice. There are seven different aspects of the leadership loop that you can put into practice TODAY. So don't wait to start leading your life by example. Instead, tune in as we unpack each of the seven areas (care, learn, appreciate, contribute, verbalize, lead, succeed) to apply in your life and work. By completing others, we'll feel more complete in ourselves. A growth and abundance mindset is needed for a thriving work culture. This is how you start feeling fulfilled where you are today.

Start putting these into practice, and let us know what you're experiencing with them! We'd love to hear your feedback and ideas for future episodes. Connect with us below!

In the second episode of our Lead From Any Level series, inspired by John Maxwell's The 360° Leader, we unpack the next layer of the three-part series, "Leading Up." We'll discuss our favorite strategies from our work-life perspectives so you get something to take into the office and home with you.

It all starts with how well you lead yourself. Especially if you're new to an organization as an entry-level or experienced hire. Before you lead anyone at any level, you'll want to lead yourself exceptionally well. This relates to your daily practices, saying no to protect your energy, and developing self-awareness. Then, give yourself some grace and do your best when you step into a new role or organization.

Embrace your ignorance, and know that your perspective is unique no matter where you are in the organization. Sometimes your thoughts are exactly what leadership needs to hear because they're distanced from the ground floor. Your leadership will thank you as you lighten their load and develop a relationship grounded in trust. You make their job easier, and they'll never forget you. We'll say this for any 1-up, 1-down relationship.

In the first episode of our Lead From Any Level series, inspired by John Maxwell's The 360° Leader, we unpack the first layer of the three-part series, "Leading Down." Then, we discuss our favorite strategies from the perspective of our experiences in the workplace and how they can relate to your life.

What are you committed to as a leader? As you move up in your organization and your time gets more scarce, it is essential to develop as a listener because you may only have 10% of your time to spend with your people, so it must be 100% committed. This commitment, along with spotting what people do right and understanding their wants and needs, will help you leverage the strengths and desires of your people to drive your organization forward. Developing people is a long-term game. Are you ready?

In this week's episode, we're joined by a special guest, Brett Larson, to discuss the foundations of his novel approach to leadership development and how you can apply them to enhance your life's leadership roles today.

Brett is an iPEC Certified Leadership Coach and Leadership Development Program Manager at W.L. Gore & Associates. With 30 years of leadership experience and 3 years of experience developing leaders across an organization, we're thrilled to share his wealth of insight with you today.

He's also the author of the book "Leaders With A Capital L" which will be released in January of 2023.

While typical development approaches involve shipping leaders off to an offsite course, Brett has been experimenting with more of a group and team coaching approach where leaders learn and develop in the environment where they have the most impact—with their teams. These experiential environments for development and accountability within the team can yield better results and a greater overall impact.

Brett shares some of the fundamentals from the HUM-B-LE methodology for developing HUMan Based LEadership qualities within yourself and your organization. Whether you're an aspiring leader, an executive, or a leader at home, you'll take away some gold.

If you want to bring this framework to your team or organization, visit this LINK to learn more and schedule a free consultation today, and you can connect with Brett directly via his LinkedIn profile.

There's an art and a science to having a growth mindset with the numerous challenges life throws us. It starts with our identities. Do you believe you are who you are, fixed in your god-given abilities and skill level? Or are you willing to continue facing fear and failure because the worst-case scenario is learning and growth?

It sounds like a simple shift, and in reality, you're facing an identity that's been built over a lifetime of consistency with your own and society's reinforcing confirmation. There's something to be said about praising the process over the outcome. When we shift our focus to finding our wealth in the journey, the evidence of growth will start to reinforce our new beliefs. The belief that you are dynamic, ever-changing, and are not the same person you were five years ago.

In this episode, we'll break down how to notice your language, body language, and habits when your mindset is fixed and limited, show you some tools and practices to shift toward growth in different areas of your life, and what each of these look like within fixed and growth mindset organizations.

At different times throughout this episode, we reference Carol Dweck's Mindset: The New Psychology of Success. Buy her book to dive deeper into the science and insights around mindset.

Strategies to develop a higher baseline of social trust. We all have biased tendencies and behavior. It's in our nature because it kept us alive when noticing who was a part of our tribe was a matter of life and death. Civilization and collaboration have evolved rapidly, far surpassing our brain's ability to feel comfortable in today's increasingly diverse hyper-connected world.

In this episode, we'll look at defining unconscious bias from different angles, a bit of the neuroscience, and practices that will start building awareness of your unique biases. Then, once you know how they show up in your life, you can mindfully choose your action or response in the moment.

We're uncomfortable with what we don't understand. So if you're committed to being a Present Professional, get comfortable with being uncomfortable. It takes consistent devotion over time to rewire thoughts we've had for years or decades. It's never too late to get started!

In today's hyper-connected world, there's a constant battle for our attention and energy. They're our most precious resources, and you can feel it when you're not focusing them on the areas that fulfill you.

You become overwhelmed when you're spread too thin or pushed too far out of balance over a long period. You check out at work, become irritable with those you love, sacrifice your health, and more. This is burnout.

We'll touch on more ways to recognize it in ourselves and others, yet the main focus of this discussion is transcending burnout before it even has a chance to get a grip on us. When we focus our energy and attention on moving toward the things that balance our lives and have a process for checking in with ourselves, we create a broader sense of self-awareness for our lives!

We're so excited to share this episode with you, and we hope you get a lot out of looking at the different roles and commitments that fulfill you in life right now. There's a reason that they're important to you, and we invite you to take a deeper look at why. So reconnect to that, and make time for the things that feed your soul. Make every day count!

Thank you so much for being a listener! For more resources on burnout for your team or organization, check out the Humessence Burnout to Balance Program.

Social interactions and your ability to establish and maintain relationships are becoming more predictive of career success in our increasingly connected world. In addition, establishing a community both in and outside the workplace contributes positively to your mental and physical health. According to the 75-year Harvard Study of Adult Development, one thing surpasses all in terms of well-being and longevity: "Good relationships keep us happier and healthier. Period", said Robert Waldinger, director of the study.

In the third episode of our Emotional Intelligence series, we'll be moving away from self and diving into strategies and practices you can use to sharpen your social awareness. After implementing them, you'll be able to read the room and pick up on people's energy better. You'll be more respected and liked within your workplace and personal circles because you've built your self-awareness, and now you're able to move your focus toward others. This deep listening and intentional awareness are what the world is craving, and you'll notice the response when you give it.

Find a mentor or honest friend to hold you accountable for what you're putting your attention on in social situations. Try to implement one thing at a time and give it a moment to stick. Once the behavior becomes natural, you can move to another strategy and keep growing!

Leadership positions amplify this stat significantly because you cannot effectively produce through others without first understanding yourself to understand others. It's a process that we'll take you through over a four-episode series on the pillars of emotional intelligence from Travis Bradberry's Emotional Intelligence 2.0.

Our expansion on self-awareness last episode naturally led to the first of the four pillars of emotional intelligence. In this episode, we'll introduce the concept of emotional intelligence and how critical self-awareness is to developing a strong E.Q. If you want to focus on any area of your professional development, emotional intelligence will have the most significant and immediate impact.

Once you've become aware of the behaviors that are creating your world without judgment and implemented mindfulness practices into your day-to-day life, you will begin to notice the space you've created between stimulus and response.

This space is where you have the opportunity to manage how you want to respond to the world over reacting to whatever the world throws at you from fight or flight mode or preprogrammed responses. The reaction is where your bias, protective mechanisms, and lower self lives. Your response, or conscious choice, is where you can start creating the life you want and being the leader your team has been waiting for.

In this episode, you'll find tools to improve your self-management immediately. Then, it's up to you to practice them. Find an accountability partner and strengthen your E.Q. together. It's a great way to see yourself in an honest mirror and connect over shared growth.
