Rejection used to cripple me.

I remember when I didn't match for a PGY-1 residency. I was very upset, but it wound up being one of the best things for me and my career.

Although I didn't match, I found a residency through the "scramble" that was a great fit for me. I loved my PGY-1 year and the relationships that formed as a result.

Even though I've run an Ironman, hiked 42 miles in the Grand Canyon, and climbed to 18,000 feet in the Himalayas, choosing to own a dog once terrified me.

I used to be scared of dogs (big ones, at least) and never intended to be a dog owner. Something shifted in me about 7 years ago and Fitz Roy came into my life.

And. I'm. So. Glad. He. Did.

How do you incorporate self-care into your busy schedule?

I remember when I first started out after residency in my first job as a critical care pharmacist. I was responsible for creating a critical care position in a 20 bed medical ICU. I felt so much pressure and passion towards elevating the clinical services at my hospital.

I pushed myself so much that within that first year after residency, I began throwing up in the middle of the night. I would wake up from sleep and get sick multiple times. At the time, I didn't believe it was stress-related, but it most certainly was stress related.

Whether you're an experienced healthcare professional or you're just starting out, incorporating a regular self-care routine elevates you and everyone around you.

This week on the podcast, we chat about:

💙 What wellness is and why it's important

💚 3 simple self-care steps to incorporate in your work day

  • How do you find work life balance when you are utterly exhausted?

When I think of Serenity Skills, I always think of the Seinfeld episode...Serenity Now.

George's dad listened to a cassette tape that told him to say "Serenity Now" to calm him down and lower his blood pressure.

Kramer got egged by some kids outside and he used "Serenity Now" to be at ease.

Later in the episode, they say that saying "Serenity Now" doesn't work, it just bottles up the anger until you explode...

Although I believe intentions (like "Serenity Now") are powerful tools, if you say it, but don't believe and feel it, then you likely won't experience the serenity you seek.

You need tools to physiologically shift your nervous system.

I remember when I felt exhausted and burned out as an overworked pharmacist.  I would come home after a 10 plus hour shift and collapse on the couch.

Many days, I was too tired to even order takeout.

I would make myself sick...literally...by worrying about a potential mistake I might have made when a patient's health is on the line.

Sometimes I felt unvalued and disrespected...especially when a physician, nurse, or patient, would yell at me for simply doing my job.

Pharmacy is often overlooked, yet we are KEY to improving patients' lives.

However, if we don't manage and protect our own energy, this leaves us feeling drained and burned out 😮‍💨

Our inner critic is that negative voice inside our mind that places limitations on ourself and prevents us from living our best life. On the flip side, our inner critic is a self protective mechanism that works to help us survive.

But, our inner critic can shut us down and limit us.

If we are the ones thinking these thoughts, then it IS within our power to change these thoughts.

We can be the hero in our story, we can shift from victim to victor here and we don't have to rely on anyone outside of ourself to change our story.

In this episode, Haley chats about 4 Simple Ways to Quiet the Inner Critic.

Thoughts become things. Our thoughts create feelings, our feelings create our habits, our habits create results or things.

How do we embrace this mantra to live our best adventure-inspired life?

If I'm being honest, I think I've wanted to quit just about everything I've tried at some point. I was always the kid that if things didn't go smoothly the first time, I would swear it off.

As a kid, I accidentally rode my bike down the stairs, got hurt, and swore I was never riding my bike again. That is, until my younger brother started riding his. Good 'ole sibling rivalry.

Despite how much I wanted to quit, something kept pulling me towards whatever the thing was I wanted to accomplish.

So if you are trying something new, it's not "working," and you are caught up in all the reasons why you can't or shouldn't, but the desire is there, let's talk about a method to interrupt those thoughts. Let's keep taking steps towards your desire.

Finding your why or your purpose helps create alignment in all areas of your life.
What do you believe?  What is your purpose or why?

Our "why" helps us get out of bed in the morning and energizes us to move through challenges.

Our why is more than a result, like buying a car, or making money, or crossing the finish line.  Our why is a belief or purpose.

In this mini episode, Haley shares 1 key question to help you find your why.

My first Grand Canyon through-hike took me to the edge of my comfort zone and beyond. I believe life begins at the edge of your comfort zone! In this episode, I share my first experience hiking a continuous 42 mile Grand Canyon Rim to Rim to Rim hike.

In June 2013, I walked into the Grand Canyon and 28 hours later, emerged with swollen, blistered feet, a broken spirit, and a fear of living adventurously.

Ultimately, this experience woke me up and inspired me to run an Ironman, climb to 18,000 feet in the Himalayas and return to the 42 mile Grand Canyon Rim to Rim to Rim hike.

This show is about how difficult outdoor experiences build inner strength and mindfulness to live a life with purpose and adventure. It's also about finding a balance between stretching ourselves and being content and grateful each day.

Every week I will share adventures, insights, and tips to empower you to step into your own adventure-inspired life. I'll bring on guests to share their stories of adventure and inner strength.

I started this show because I'm passionate about cultivating grit, growth, and gratitude. But I also need a community to encourage that growth, a lifeline to lean on when things get tough. Something to remind me that I'm not alone and to help me rise again.

I hope you learn something, laugh a little, and are empowered to step into your best, adventure-inspired life. Let's get started.
