Welcome to the Age Guide podcast highlighting perspectives on the aging journey. We are here to be your personal Age Guide and enhance your quality of life on the road ahead. This podcast is about putting a face on aging and giving a voice to older adults and caregivers by highlighting their experiences and stories. We want to provide a window into the struggles and joys of aging, to dispel myths and combat ageism. This podcast is hosted by AgeGuide Northeastern Illinois, an Area Agency on Aging in Northeastern Illinois. At AgeGuide, it is our mission to be a vital resource and advocate for people as we age by providing thoughtful guidance, supportive services, and meaningful connections.
In this episode, we get the opportunity to take a deep dive with Dr. Raj Shah of Rush University Medical Center exploring ideas revolving around brain health, caregiving, and what it truly means to age well. Drawing from decades of dementia research and community-based work, Dr. Shah reflects on the power of connection, the role of care partners, and how belonging shapes our health across the lifespan. Together, they unpack the small, meaningful actions at home, in clinics, and throughout our communities that can make aging a more supported, inclusive, and thriving experience.

With Ageism Awareness Day approaching, the final episode of Aging Unfiltered features Jan Golden, founder of Age Friendly Vibes, and Sara Breindel, Communications Specialist and Ageism Consultant with the American Society on Aging. Jan shares how a contest for anti-ageist birthday cards led her to create an age-positive greeting card company, while Sara recalls the moment she realized how subtle language can reinforce stereotypes. In this episode, we continue our celebration of our 50th-anniversary theme, The Great Reconnection. We're discussing the importance of building connections and supporting older adults who are caring for children. We interviewed Sheree Stillwell, a grandparent raising a grandson and also a co-facilitator of a local support group for grandparents raising children. Additionally, she participates in State Representative Natalie Manley's Legislative Committee on Grandparents Raising Grandchildren. Sheree provided us with a firsthand look at the experience of grandparents who are stepping in and parenting again.

In this episode, Part 2 of our series - Supporting Older Adults Who are Parenting Again, we continue our celebration of our 50th Anniversary theme, ‘The Great Re-Connection.’ We’re talking about helping build connections and supports for a very special group of older adults – those caring for children. Some are grandparents, some are aunts, uncles, or even unrelated friends, but they are all caregivers who have found themselves parenting children in their 60’s and beyond.
A group of these dedicated kinship caregivers found a champion in Deputy majority leader, Natalie Manley, who represents District 98 in the Illinois General Assembly. In this interview, Leader Manley explains how her passion for supporting older adults raising children inspired a legislative Advisory Council to help elevate the voices of these kinship families in Springfield.
- House Bill 0780 (The full text can be found here) established the Illinois Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Pilot Program to provide outreach and services to older adults raising a child/children in Will County.

In this episode, we recognize National Family Caregivers Month and continue our celebration of our 50th Anniversary theme of ‘The Great Re-Connection’ by talking about the unique needs of a very special group of older adults – those caring for children. Some are grandparents, some are aunts, uncles, or even unrelated friends, but they are all caregivers who have found themselves parenting children in their 60’s and beyond. Both the older adults and the children benefit from being raised by a loved one. The children benefit from learning from another generation, experience more stability and the older adults report feeling a sense of purpose and social connection than other older adults.

This year marks AgeGuide’s 50th anniversary since being established in 1973 as part of the Older Americans Act. In anticipation of Medicare Open Enrollment that begins October 15th, Val Guzman, AgeGuide's Benefits Access Specialist, interviewed Jennifer, a Senior Health Insurance Program client. We continue our series on Veterans and the services available to them through the Veterans Directed Care program. This program allows Veterans to continue to live in their homes for as long as possible by receiving home and community-based services. We want to express the unique needs of the heroes in our community who fought for our country and the people who care for them. In this episode, we interviewed Jacob Zimmerman who works for the Veterans Commission of Kane County. He works tirelessly to maximize benefits for more than 18,000 veterans in Kane County to ensure veterans are taken care of in a holistic manner.

For the month of March, which is both Disability Month and Women’s History Month, we honor the many older adult women caring for a loved one with disabilities. Today, there are nearly one million households in which someone aged 60 or older is caring for an adult with an intellectual or developmental disability and the vast majority of those caregivers, 75%, are women. They spend, on average, 40 hours week, the equivalent of a full-time job, in caregiving.
In the next and last episode of our caregiving series, we interview Nancy Hamilton, just one of the many women caregivers. Hear Nancy’s story about caring for her adult son who has a developmental disability and the many challenges, emotions, and rewards of her journey. Nancy puts a face on caregiving and gives her unique perspective on the intersection of disability, caregiving, and aging.

In this series of our podcast, we want to shine a light on the commitment and dedication of more than 44 million family caregivers in the United States who provide personal assistance to loved ones with disabilities and other care needs. These caregivers, also known as informal or unpaid caregivers, make up 21% of the adult population today. Most also work full-time jobs in addition to their caring duties and 6 out of 10 report that caregiving has affected their ability to do their jobs. In fact, 15% have taken a leave of absence, and 14% have had to reduce work hours or change jobs as a result of their caregiving responsibilities.
On Thursday December 1st, AgeGuide is hosting a virtual caregiver seminar called, “The Caring Economy: Supporting Your Employees Who Care for Family”. The keynote speaker, Ellen Birchander, Director of the Gerontology Department at University of Massachusetts, will talking about the importance of supporting employees who provide essential care for a loved one. We invited Ellen to join us for a one-on-one conversation ahead of the seminar, to get her thoughts on why caregiving is so challenging in America today and how it affects all of us.

Margorie Logman is a long-time resident of Aurora, IL. At first glance she looks like the picture of successful aging in community, living in her own home and enjoying the freedom to get involved and give back to her community. But Marjorie’s path to community living wasn’t always smooth. At the age of 73, Marjorie is on a mission to disrupt long-term care because of her own harrowing experience living in a facility for several years where she experienced the failures of a broken system of care. Marjorie has become such a vocal advocate for older adults that she is somewhat of a local celebrity in her own right, participating in city council meetings, writing opinion pieces and speaking out about social justice issues. In this third podcast in our series on long-term care, we will hear Marjorie’s personal account of the state of long-term care and the plight of residents.
