John Cheng is a professor at Shih Chien University in Taipei, Taiwan and member of a Toastmasters club Leadership Village. Earlier in his career he held various senior management positions in Corporate Banking, among them Senior Vice President, Corporate Banking at the Taiwan Desk in HSBC in Shanghai.
While most of the Toastmasters in the Wild East of Europe join the organization to boost their career, John joined it to better connect with his staff during his stay in Shanghai.

Mark Snow (Connect on LinkedIn) is a Community Problem Solver and Change Agent living in Brisbane, in Queensland, Australia.He works in the Department of Local Government, Racing, and Multicultural Affairs in Brisbane.

Adrian Salasan is leading a software architecture team and the Cluj-Napoca office for TouchPoint Medical and he's Founder & Trainer Consultant at Live to Learn SRL. You can connect with him on LinkedIn.
He was a Toastmasters Area Director, Division Director of Division D, Romania and Moldova in District 110, the Wild East of Europe.
In 2019, Adrian chaired the District 110 Conference in Cluj, Romania.
"It's difficult enough to convey abstract technical information when you have perfect audio and perfect video. It's even more difficult to do it when people don't understand what you're saying." - Adrian
We start the episode by discussing Adrian's remote set-up that includes a professional microphone and a mirrorless camera instead of the usual webcam.
If you'd like to upgrade yours, here are a few tips from Adrian, ordered by impact / importance:
- Upgrade your audio instead of using built-in laptop mic
- Free / cheap - use your phone wired earbuds (the closer the microphone is to your mouth...the better, hence even cheap earbuds are better than the computer's built-in microphone)
- Some investment - buy a USB headset used for communications. These bypass your laptop sound card and provide a consistent and pretty decent audio experience regardless of the computer being used. These can be found for 30-50 eur usually
- A slightly bigger investment is to buy a USB microphone like a Samson Q2U or Audio Technica ATR 2100X-USB...as you can plug these directly into the computer via USB and provide significantly better sound quality than the headsets. These can be had for 50-80 EUR usually and most people don't need to go further than this
- With an even bigger investment, one can get an entry-level audio interface and a good mic...and the sky's the limit from here. For most people, this will be overkill.
- Upgrade your video instead of using built-in laptop camera (the most important thing to pay attention to here is having a light on you ... from the front / from behind your monitor)
- Cheap/free - use your phone's camera which is generally much better than the laptop one...and with some software can be used as webcam
- Some investment - buy an external 720p or even better 1080p camera. Any Logitech with those specs should work...and these cost between 30 and 60-70 EUR
- Some more investment, if you have a video/photo camera with clean hdmi output you can buy a cheap capture card which transforms the HDMI signal to USB. This is a fairly cheap option if you already have the camera
- Even more expensive is buying a good camera with a proper lens and a quality capture card. This is overkill for most people...but maybe you can use that hardware to start your own YouTube channel :).
Adrian's favorite book that we're mentioning close to the end of the episode is Steven Pinker's The Better Angels of Our Nature.
