When we want to take a trip to St. Louis we jump in the car and go, but not too long ago what takes just a couple hours would take days by horse and buggy. That all changed in the 1800's when the steamboat became the premier way to travel. However, taking a steamboat to your destination was not the safest way to travel, not by a long shot. After reading the book "The Man from the Train: The Solving of a Century-Old Serial Killer Mystery" by authors Bill James and Rachel McCarthy James, we realized we needed to revisit the topic and present the theory from the book. Since the late 1800s Ghost Hollow Road just south of Quincy, has gained a spooky reputation. Home to multiple urban legends and local folklore, this road manages to hold its secrets close. Many a local have spent late nights in search of disappearing houses, haunted cemeteries, and a ghostly lady in white. Travis and Chris untangle the fiction from the fact, discussing the origins of the road's name as well as the urban legends that pave the way on the most infamous road in Quincy, Illinois.
Levee's in the area were not fairing well against the mighty waters of the Mississippi River in 1993. Many of those levees either broke or were overtopping in a span of a month. But for the West Quincy Levee it wouldn't be the river breaking the levee, it would be done by a man. When you think of serial killers most people think of Gacey, Dahmer or Bundy. The name Michael Swango may not be as familiar to those outside of Quincy, however many here remember the poisoning of his fellow medical professionals. Beyond Quincy, Swango spent time as a doctor in multiple hospitals in and outside the country. No matter the location his patients increasingly began dying mysterious deaths which quickly turned suspicion on Swango who was eventually arrested and convicted of many murders. In 1995 an incident shocked the community. 14 year old Michael McCluskey tragically lost his parents and younger brother in a house fire which he claimed to escape from the second story window. Soon, suspicion turned toward Michael who was eventually tried for murder. Now 26 years later we dig into the the story with one of the journalist who covered the trial.
