What does it take to revolutionize the print-on-demand industry from the ground up? Join me and my POD Pal, industry expert Cole Lundstrom, as we unravel his journey from owning a bustling screen printing shop in LA to partnering with Omniprint on a transformative DTF project, Click Peel. Hear firsthand how this new company is set to make high-quality DTF transfers accessible right from home, reshaping the playground for both professionals and hobbyists. Set against the exhilarating backdrop of Printing United 2024 in Las Vegas, this conversation is as vibrant as the trade show itself, offering a glimpse into the cutting-edge technologies that are pushing the boundaries of creativity in apparel decoration.

As we ride the wave of change in the print-on-demand landscape, Cole and I reflect on the industry's shift towards more sustainable business models. Learn how traditional screen printing businesses are transitioning to brokering and consulting, slashing overheads, and enhancing personal income by tapping into local resources. We dissect the benefits of staying ahead of the curve with innovations like DTF, and the critical importance of selling before investing. Our discussion highlights the value of forging strong relationships with local vendors to ensure success in this rapidly evolving market.

Finally, we delve into alternative revenue streams, such as Click Peel's high-quality heat transfers and the lucrative potential of live printing events. Tune in for a dynamic episode packed with practical advice and inspiration that challenges you to think beyond the traditional, unlocking the full potential of the print industry.

Welcome back to the PODCast!

Ever felt your print on demand business losing steam? This episode promises to reignite that spark as Travis uncovers the silent killer behind many entrepreneurs' stagnation and shows you how to combat it. After sharing some personal updates about his band's recent gigs and celebrating his son's birthday at a Rockies game, he dives into the heart of maintaining motivation through effective calendar management and strategic planning. Proper planning isn't just a buzzword—it's the lifeline to keeping your business thriving and your interest in it alive.

Struggling with organization? You're not alone. In the Main Event, Travis tackles the chaos head-on by discussing the crucial role of a well-organized system in managing SKUs and scheduling tasks. He shares some of what he talked about in Episode 205 and feeling overwhelmed by all the minute details of what needs done day to day. In fact, he asked a friend's to help and her organizational skills helped set him on a track to be more efficient and get important tasks done. By categorizing tasks and structuring his calendar, he discovered hidden pockets of time and greatly enhanced his efficiency, overcoming common obstacles like imposter syndrome and various distractions.

Moving on, Travis discusses the Print On Demand Success Pyramid that he originally spoke about in Episode 177. Organization is the foundation for the rest of the pyramid, with designs, on-page SEO, mockups, and software tools building upon it. In the end, many POD sellers turn the pyramid upside down which is why many burn out and don't see the success they dream of at the beginning.

Finally, Travis officially announces the dates and times for the POD Foundations Challenge, a three-day event designed to help you organize your business operations for better growth. Sign up today and your business will thank you!

Welcome back to the PODCast!

Money problems got you down?

(Sounds like the opening line of a late night infomercial.) 😂

But seriously, how can you turn around the financial fate of your Print On Demand business? This week, Travis and Josiah share some strategies around why your business finances might not be where you had hoped when starting out. While they can’t wave a magic wand over all your financial woes, perhaps some practical advice can make a real difference.

For starters, the guys explore the art of increasing profits without necessarily ramping up sales volume. Discover why selling higher-ticket items like wooden signs and/or wall art can be a game-changer compared to the usual t-shirts. Learn how to boost your average cart value with savvy tactics like offering free shipping on larger orders or cross-selling complementary items. They also stress the importance of clear product descriptions and visual aids to reduce customer confusion and returns, ultimately leading to higher customer satisfaction and a healthier net margin for your business.

Free up your time for strategic growth by outsourcing repetitive tasks to virtual assistants and keep your credentials secure with tools like LastPass. Understand the power of analyzing your advertising expenses and how monitoring Return on Advertising Spend (ROAS) can ensure your ad campaigns are profitable. From optimizing your product listings to leveraging automation tools like bulk mock-up generators and AI advancements like ChatGPT, this episode is crammed with actionable tips to help your Print On Demand business thrive.

Plus, in the Point of Interest, the guys share an AI tool from a company named DistroMade that will look at a product image and create a description to use on your listings!

Welcome back to the PODCast!

On this week's show, the topic may not feel congruent with the title. However, some of the frustrations and perceived setbacks you're experiencing in your print on demand business might actually be springboards for growth. Perspective can change the way you internalize "problems" and set you free to actually grow.

Last week's show on self sabotage is (in part) a launching point for this episode. To be frank, the power of discomfort can actually foster personal and business growth. Both Travis and Josiah have countless experiences that underscore how continuous learning and practice can lead to becoming better versions of ourselves, both personally and professionally.

So while this episode focuses on things in your business that you might feel are negative, choose to see them as opportunities. Hopefully Travis and Josiah help by sharing some practical steps to take if you find yourself losing momentum or even giving up entirely.

Plus, in this week's Point of Interest, the guys share a few statistics from a recent blog post Printful shared about POD in 2024.

Welcome back to the PODCast!

On this week's show, Travis is solo and pulls the curtain back on some of the internal growth he's been leaning into. The hope is that taking the time to acknowledge these limiting and self sabotaging voices will help the listener become aware of their own and how it can (and likely is) affecting their print on demand business, their health, and even their relationships.

While the topic is not 100% POD related, there are certainly some direct correlations to how we perceive ourselves and how our business grows and thrives (or fails.) Being aware is the first step towards putting these thoughts in their proper place as they will likely never go away.

In the words of Travis' spiritual director, "we are always learning, practicing, and becoming." Hopefully this podcast will start that process in you in order to not only build a better business, but build a better you!

Welcome back to the PODCast!

Can combining In-N-Out and Chick-fil-A lead to the ultimate 4th of July feast? Join Josiah and Travis as they recount their holiday adventures filled with quirky food experiments, pickleball matches, and dazzling fireworks. While Josiah enjoyed a fun-filled weekend, Travis shares his unfortunate tale of dealing with a back injury that almost sidelined his plans. Despite the setback, he persevered and managed to join some of the family activities, adding a touch of resilience to the festive (yet way too drawn out) stories.

That said, none of you came to the podcast for any of that. 😎

The Main Event topic provides some "tough love" in the form of encouraging you to make a business move that you've probably been thinking of for quite some time. While talked about on the show previously, the guys dive into the practicalities (and simplicity) of using Upwork to find the perfect Virtual Assistant (VA) for your needs. Learn how to identify tasks for delegation, navigate job postings, and start small with manageable projects. Whether you need help with design, listings, or bookkeeping, you don't need to feel overwhelmed. Drawing from personal experiences, Travis and Josiah encourage you to seize the opportunities that online talent marketplaces offer, helping you break free from procrastination and focus on growth.

Plus, in this week's Point Of Interest, the guys share about the latest news at Etsy HQ. You may have received an email with a link to a video from Etsy CEO, Josh Silverman. In the video Josh clarifies their commitment to creativity on the platform, as well as some specifics to image and mockup requirements as it pertains to Print On Demand.

So tune in and get ready to be challenged! (Or you could have your VA tune in for you 😉)

So which platform should you be focusing on for your print-on-demand business? On this week's show, Travis fly's solo as Josiah takes a well-deserved family break in Wyoming. He tackles the age-old debate: Etsy or Shopify? In the massive pros and cons list for each platform, Travis outlines the differences in these two behemoths and why one or the other might be your best option.

For example, Etsy boasts built-in traffic and low upfront costs, making it a beginner-friendly platform. But it's not all sunshine and rainbows; marketplace fees and reduced profit margins can sting. Conversely, Shopify offers extensive customization and higher profit potential but demands more technical know-how and marketing efforts. Don't miss out on this episode packed with practical advice and real-world strategies!

(Really sorry for the poor audio on this episode!)
Can you believe it? 200 episodes of Print on Demand and small business content. I guarantee Travis and Josiah had no idea this day would come sitting in a garage four years ago and pressing record for the first time.

But here we are. Wow.

Join the guys as they celebrate this incredible accomplishment LIVE across multiple platforms, reflecting on nearly four years of engaging with the Print On Demand community. While they attempt to treat it like a regular episode of sorts, (yeah, there's a dad joke and a point of interest) the real stars of the show are all the people who sent in voice recordings to participate in the occasion.

So listen in as a host of guests share stories, their business highs and lows, and how the PODCast has helped them in their print on demand businesses. This episode is more than a celebration; it's a testament to the unwavering support and enthusiasm of this community that has fueled Travis and Josiah's podcasting journey.

When starting your print on demand venture, it's natural to share it with others. Well, if you've told people about your POD business, this episode might be a bit of a wake up call. While it's totally fine to see print on demand as a hobby that can bring in a few bucks, there's a different way to go about building a business.

On this week's episode, Travis and Josiah shed light on the differences between a hobby and business. They start off with the necessity of dedicated work hours and goal setting. These form the foundation of a real business as opposed to a side hobby you work on "when you have time." From strategic product listings to social media content creation, the guys really hone in on creating a print on demand business you can be proud of.

Plus, in this week's Point of Interest, the guys share a new Amazon Merch on Demand custom t-shirt listing. It seems Amazon continues to grow the program, simultaneously taking sales from other sellers trying to sell customized products on the platform. (Insert sad trombone sound here.)

Welcome back the PODCast!

Easter egg hunts and church choirs are usually reserved for family albums, but not today! Tune in as Travis and Josiah weave tales of their Easter escapades into a broader narrative about the hustle of online selling. From the echoes of laughter during a family Easter egg showdown to the strum of a guitar in a church service, they set the stage for an episode that marries personal anecdotes with the cutthroat strategies of navigating Shopify and marketplaces in the print-on-demand cosmos.

And all of that before noon. ;-)

Ever felt the rush of a new tech purchase or the buzz of an upcoming sports event? The guys channel that excitement into dissecting the choice between embracing the autonomy of Shopify or leveraging the traffic of marketplaces. The episode takes you through the trenches of e-commerce decision-making, armed with stories of both victory and the occasional novelty t-shirt store flop. (Looking at you, TeeScream!)

The grand finale is a candid discussion about the pivotal choice every print-on-demand entrepreneur must face: to marketplace or not to marketplace, that is the question. If you're navigating the seas of customer traffic versus full profit control, the guys have got the compass you need. The journey from learning to doing can be daunting, but with a mix of humor, advice, and real-life experiences, Travis and Josiah are here to guide you through, one dad joke at a time.

Dang. That last sentence was pure gold.

Welcome back to the show, POD Pals!

In this episode of the Print on Demand Cast, Travis and Josiah share insights on goal setting. Considering it's a new year, many people will make New Year Resolutions only to abandon them in the upcoming weeks and months. Why is that?

In the acclaimed book 'Atomic Habits,' author James Clear explains that part of the reason we give up on our goals is that we focus on the results and not the systems that will get us to those results. To that end, the guys share the difference between "achievement based goals" and "habit based goals."

Additionally, the guys take some time to share potential strategies on growing your POD business, how to manage and track goals effectively, as well as the importance of maintaining balance between your business and personal life goals.

On this week's episode on the show, Travis is flying solo as Josiah is returning from his trip to Sweden. However, he was able to get a last minute guest to agree to come on the podcast and share his knowledge of branding and design. Andy Zenz of Robots Love Balloons has been helping people with strategic branding through purposeful graphic design for over 15 years. He is a wealth of knowledge and even helped Travis design the packaging for his most successful private label product several years back.

The discussion covers a lot of ground, but a theme that seems to weave throughout the interview is the contrast between "quality" and "quantity" when it comes to print on demand. While there is room for both, it's a valuable question to ponder as you move forward in your POD business.

Pricing your print on demand products can cause you to question many things. For some, it can be a "set it and forget it" type exercise (don't do that!) and for others it can cause stress as they attempt to match similar products while their profit margins shrink over time. Regardless of your personality's tendencies, a strategy for pricing is the best bet for the long term success of your POD business. On this week's episode, Travis shares some of the struggles he's had with owning and operating a print on demand fulfillment center. In the spirit of transparency, he shares about how the overhead has finally caught up with him and is taking some fairly drastic measures in Make Your Mark Design. While very few people typically enjoy hearing about failure, the guys believe this kind of authentic talk about the ups and downs of business is important. Failure is often not shared until there is new success. However, many business owners go through challenges like this every day and it's important to face them and process those things with honesty. Hopefully this will help some who may have considered giving up on their dreams or have had the wind taken out of their sails.

Also, in the Point Of Interest, Travis shares about his time at the Podcast Movement 2023 conference. While not specifically POD related, it seemed like a fun topic to share about as it's given Travis new ideas for the Print On Demand Cast.

Either way, on this week's show, Josiah and Travis share some tips to help you grow fast on the Etsy platform. Now we won't lie and say this will be easy. In fact, it will likely take more effort than you're currently putting in. But as Dave Ramsey says, "If you will live like no one else, later you can live like no one else."

Plus, in the Point Of Interest, the guys share some free and low cost marketing ideas for your print on demand business. Obviously all of these ideas won't be applicable to everyone, but if you're able to apply some of these to your store(s) and put strategies in place to continue to implement them, it can reap huge benefits.

Obviously knowing your customer is important in any business, but how can you use that knowledge in a print on demand setting? Well on this week's show Travis and Josiah spend time trying to understand the psychology of somebody who is buying a product online.

What can be done to make it easier for a potential customer to actually purchase the item they're viewing in their browser? It greatly depends on the type of shopper the person is, but in your listing creation you can cater to different types of buyers if you know who they are. In the end, your conversion rate should rise as you gain knowledge about how people make buying decisions online.

Plus, in this week's Point Of Interest, a major printing equipment manufacturer has finally released a DTF printer.

On this week's show we decided to dive into the world of mockups. As you know, your mockup quality is directly related to your conversion rate on your print on demand products. In other words, if you don't accurately present your products with a high quality mockup, you could lose the sale. It's that important.

So take a listen as we run down some of the tools we've used for years and give you the pros and cons of each.

Plus, in this week's Point of Interest, Etsy is updating the way they display product images on their listing pages. Make sure you start creating your Etsy images in 1:1 ratio or you'll be limiting the size of your thumbnails on the search page.

On this week's show, Travis and Josiah talk about mindset. While some may say this topic doesn't need to be discussed on a podcast about print on demand, it's actually a massive topic that influences how well you do in business, relationships, and even life! Don't fast forward through this one - it can shed light on where you are currently as well as give you practical steps to take in order to grow yourself.

Plus, in this week's Point Of Interest, the guys take a peek at the new Epson SureColor F2270 DTG printer! Coming in at $18,999 and shipping in August, it's a very intriguing option if you're starting to look at bringing production in house.

On this week's show, Travis and Josiah are joined by Kevin Sterling of Made For Print, a company that allows you to outsource your art department. He's been in the print on demand world for a few years, but learned a few lessons the hard way by paying a marketing company to help boost his Shopify store's online presence. While his concept was original and had a following, it seems the traction to push all the traffic was there quite yet.

Fast forward to today and Kevin is ready to push hard on his POD business and actively move onto established selling channels such as Etsy, Amazon Merch on Demand and perhaps even Walmart. Listen in as Keven shares some of the things he's learned and the advice he has to share with POD sellers!

Welcome back to the PODCast!

150 episodes later, Travis and Josiah are still making each other laugh. Who would have thought??!!

On this week's show, Travis and Josiah share some of their favorite past episodes, as well as some "words of wisdom" from past guests on the show. They also share some hopes and dreams for the future of the PODCast.

And just to have a little fun, the guys challenge each other to a "don't laugh" style dad joke challenge! (Might want to watch this one on video if you can!)

Also, in the Point of Interest, the guy share a recent update the USPS is rolling out July 9th called "Ground Advantage" (we may or may not have called it "global advantage" during the show. 😬) Even if you don't produce and ship your own products, it's good to be aware of changes that can affect our ecommerce metaverse.

Welcome back the PODCast!

Let the games begin (again!)

On this week's show, Travis and Josiah hoest another battle royale! This week it's trying to decide which sales channel is the best to sell your print on demand products.

To be honest, this one didn't come out the way the guys thought it would. There are some serious heavyweights in this week's battle and in the end an (perhaps) unlikely victor takes the top spot.

Also, in the Point of Interest, we take a look at some popular 4th of July t-shirts and give our opinions on design and SEO for some decent sellers. You might consider finding a way to watch this video so you can play along.

Welcome back to the PODCast!

In this week's episode, Travis gets into the numbers and puts Josiah to sleep!

Well, not really. But kinda. The bottom line is that while the finances of your business can be a little boring, they're incredibly important. So how do you know if you're making money in your print on demand business?

Well, the guys don't claim to be geniuses about this topic, but they do share about a way that can help you know what you need each month to break even. And while that may not be the entire picture of your business' financials, it's a heck of a start!

In this week's episode, Travis and Josiah have a chance to interview Lynn Burghardt, the President of Chipply. However, what the guys didn't know was that they'd actually get to learn about TWO businesses this week! Lynn is part of a 5th generation sporting goods retail store, Burghardt Sporting Goods in Wisconsin. While she no longer works for the retail store since starting Chipply, she has some great knowledge about the space.

Chipply was actually born out of a need for Burghardt to process their team store orders in a more efficient manner. It's a webstore builder that can be used by shops and dropshippers alike to create online stores for clients. Those clients share the store link with their audience and all the orders come into one place, allowing you to easily produce them or pass them along to your print partner. Well folks, 2022 is officially 2 days from being over! On this episode of the PODCast Travis and Josiah take time to reflect on the last year personally, professionally, and (with the help of Spotify Wrapped) they take a look back at 2022 and what it meant for the PODCast itself.

Before they get there, the guys discuss more Chat GPT madness and the impending doom of humanity thanks to AI! (Just kidding...kind of.)

Travis and Josiah are at it again...and by "it" we mean recording in person at a brewery!

On this episode of the PODCast Travis and Josiah (but mostly Travis) does a little bit of venting the stresses and craziness that is Q4. From customers who don't pay for expedited shipping but expect Christmas delivery, vendors messing up product shipments, to the infamous 'You Ruined Christmas!' emails, they cover the typical stressors of the season.

Plus, in this week's Point Of Interest, the guys share a bit about Open AI's new chatbot, ChatGPT and how you can use it in your business. Truth be told, AI content's use cases will continue to grow for years to come - it's here to stay!

Storytelling has been around since the beginning of time. It's how we, as humans, relate to each other and we understand it at a very base level. Stories move us, inspire us, and challenge us. Without stories, our lives would not be the same (and frankly, would be pretty boring.)

On this week's episode of the show, Travis and Josiah invite a good friend and incredible storyteller to the podcast. Luke Humbrecht is not only an incredible word smith and copywriter, he's also a certified Storybrand coach. Storybrand is a framework for crafting your marketing messaging so it will be effective. This can be used for just about anything from your company to the products you sell - and Luke is an expert at it. On the show he shares the 7 elements of a great story and how those elements are at play in nearly every great marketing campaign. He also shares how it could be applied to an online POD store and even an Etsy store.

This episode is easily one of the guy's favorites and will likely need to be listened to more than once. So much gold!

There's a reason why the guys used parenthesis around "Make Money While You Sleep" in the title. The PODCast is now mobile!

For this week's episode, Travis and Josiah met at a local watering hole to test out some of their new recording gear. On this week's show, Travis and Josiah delve into the world of POD dropshipping. While in many industries, dropshipping could be a dirty word, for POD sellers it seems that it's the norm. Or at least the way many start out. With so many options for where you can get your products and without the heavy cost of machinery and inventory, dropshipping is a low barrier to entry for most. In this episode, the guys share all the things you'll need to consider before moving your new business down this path.

On this week's episode, Travis and Josiah talk about the latest issue with trying to create products on Amazon. Is it a glitch or is Amazon targeting POD sellers on their platform? With a company as large as Amazon, the right hand typically has no idea what the left hand is doing, so there's a chance that one change created problems that nobody was expecting, and now seller support doesn't know how to answer the questions from sellers because they've never seen these problems. Scheduling didn't work this week for Josiah and travis to get a new PODCast out, but I guarantee you'll love this rebroadcast of Episode 29 and our interview with Michael Essek!

From all the way from across the pond, Michael Essek joins the Print On Demand Cast this week to spend some time talking about how he is continuing to grow in his POD journey through the use of branding and licensing. From licensing designs to Hot Topic and Spencer's Gifts, he's really on another level when it comes to print on demand. Michael is doing it the right way.

For one, he's really focusing on his designs. In fact, during the interview, he takes time to share some of his secrets for coming up with ideas that give way to more ideas, and so on and so forth. He's a wealth of knowledge and Travis and Josiah really try and take it all in in the longest episode ever recorded for the PODCast.

Might need to break this one up, but well worth the listen.

On this week's episode, Travis and Josiah sit down with Uncle Mike for a fireside chat (without the fire) about all things business. The show is a little loose in format, but in light of recent staffing change at Make Your Mark Design, Mike was brought in as a consultant to bridge operations from Travis' Ops Manager, Amy, who recently gave her two weeks notice, to a new system utilizing both VA's and in office staff. The guys talk about that transition and what Mike is specifically looking for to move forward.

This week's show is a bit different that normal interviews, but carries a lot of good info and food for thought, plus an epic Dad Joke or two.

Well this week Travis is on vacation in Mexico! (Poor guy, what a hard life!) We had an interview lined up for this week but the guest was sick the day we were set to record so we had to pivot a little bit and rebroadcast an older interview, but it is absolutley one of our favorites with SO MUCH good info!

Please enjoy our converstation from Episode 55 with Nick Eden!

-

Advanced beginner strategies? Is that an oxymoron? Well take a listen and you'll quickly learn about some of the low hanging fruit available with some of the strategies Travis and Josiah discuss with this week's guest, Nick Eden. Nick is a fellow podcaster and has been in the Print On Demand game for many years - he even got started in POD without knowing it!

Nick and the guys discuss ways to get out of tier 10 and 25, plus how to not be so dependant on some of the platforms out there by taking your knowledge to the street! Businesses, activist groups, schools, etc all need what we have and the guys discuss ways to make that happen.

This week's episode is FULL of great ideas you can start doing TODAY so don't miss it!

Business is full of numbers. Profits, losses, salaries, retail, wholesale, etc. You'll soon find out (if you haven't already) that your cost of goods sold, otherwise known as CoGS, is one of the most important numbers. The easiest way to make money with print on demand is to create a design, load it onto a bunch of products on a bunch of platforms, then rinse and repeat. While there's nothing wrong with that process, many are doing just that since there's such a low barrier to entry. But why limit yourself to what everyone else is doing?

On this week's show, Travis and Josiah interview Helen Kinson of the Merch Money Show. Helen has interviewed over 100 guests in her three years doing the show so who better to ask about diversifying your POD revenue streams? Goals are important. We all know this, but many continue to put off setting them. In fact, we typically wait until the end of the year to even talk about them  - well, we're no different! ;-)

This week, the "podcasting professionals" (inside joke) Travis and Josiah talk about S.M.A.R.T. Goals and what they entail. They even set some for 2020 for themselves. As the year comes to a close, take some time to decide how you want your 2021 to look and write down your own S.M.A.R.T. Goals. Share them with Travis and Josiah, too!

BAD AUDIO ALERTWe apologize for the audio quality during this interview.

At the risk of alienating our...well....alien listeners, we wanted to have a podcast where we talked about the art of employing humans. It can definitely be a challenge and sometimes cause you to make some tough decisions, but to be honest, your employees are your number one resource. Figuring out how to support them is a wise investment of your time.

This week, Travis and Josiah bring in Mike and Jacque to share their experiences and give some great insight into how to treat the people who work for you. With tons of years of experience, the conversation is full of golden nuggets. Enjoy!

"Start with the end in mind."

However, if you heed that advice, there's always this: "Fix what you started incorrectly so that you don't go crazy later when you're trying to balance 50,000 plates in the air."

Regardless which advice you followed when you started out, you'll undoubtedly come to a place where you realize the importance of organization.  While there are as many ways to get organized when it comes to your POD business as there are POD printers, the important thing is to not wait to implement some sort of strategy. It may feel like overkill now, but eventually as you grow, you'll appreciate the time you took to do it. Listen in as Travis and Josiah talk about the way they've moved toward organization in their SKUs and designs.

Well, we'd be lying if we didn't say this episode is a little over the top and zany. Perhaps we had too much sugar (or beer?), or we're just getting too comfortable with each other. Regardless, the dad jokes are on full display this week!

That said, there's still a ton of valuable information here, too.

Selling on Etsy can be extremely lucrative, especially as we move into Q4. It's also one of our favorite channels for customizable products because of the customer base it serves. Listen in as Travis and Josiah discuss why they recommend not "sleeping" on Etsy.

Oh, and what does ETSY stand for anyway???
