THIRTEEN is a podcast where we share our writings and experiences. Through these, we raise innate and inner questions that we have all had, but have never really paused to ponder upon. With an intent to be and to create, we'll bring you a new episode every week. This includes everything from interactions to book reviews and conversations. And, we hope that we'll leave you with some fodder for thinking.
Prasanna Shivakamat and Shantesh Kelvekar are your hosts, and we welcome you here.

How to consume information in the new age? (E·135)
We’re discussing a topic that touches upon the aspect of content consumption in the new age, and learning. Especially in today’s world, where there are multiple means through which we’re constantly consuming content, is having information equivalent to knowledge. Sure, etymologically speaking knowledge is derived from the word “know” and therefore the two words information and knowledge can be synonymous. However, semantically speaking they are worlds apart. Perhaps information is cheaply available whereas what we make of that information can determine one’s knowledge. This conversation is about understanding this aspect of consuming information in the new age.

Slowly and steadily, we take our own city – whether we’ve immigrated to and made our home or whether we’re born and raised in one – for granted as we get used to it. And, in our own city we may become a part of a routine. To explore our own city, we need to become a traveller in our own city.
In this conversation, we share our thoughts of being a traveler in our own city.

Continuing from our previous conversation about creative block, in this conversation, we try to find the genesis of creation. We look at if we can find a means of creating. What role does Artificial Intelligence have to play in creation in the coming future?
We also look at the three facets of creation that bring to realization of thought into manifestation. Probably from that purview, there is no threat from AI to our identity or our creation. Let’s look at a diverse conversation of random thoughts and try to make meaning through that.

We’ve been offline lately, and that’s because we’ve beenswamped with work. Real apologies for being inconsistent for that. We’ve alsobeen feeling a little creative block, and instead of trying to find a solutionfor this issue, we thought of recording our conversation to see where it takesus.
We all are creative individuals. Yes, even the so called “non-creative”ones. We’re all creating something all the time. If not anything, at least thestories in our head. But an intentful creation requires a state of flow, and sometimes you feel stagnated – like what happened to us. We hope that thisconversation allows us to A. find the creative side that resides within us, andB. find ways for mending through this creative block… Let us know yourthoughts.

When I was growing up, I thought that meditation was thatyogis and sanyasis did. They all had to leave their home and renounce theirmaterial possessions and go in search for enlightenment. As I grew, I thoughtthe purpose of it is for inner peace. We often get confused with meditationwith these extremes. There could be various reasons that we choose to meditate. The other part is that meditation need not be about closing the eyes andbecoming quiet or focusing on one’s breath. Meditative quality comes with immersioninto whatever we’re doing.

Among the several definitions that we byhearted during ourschooling was of Newton’s First Law of Motion. It states that every object willremain at rest or in uniform motion in a straight line unless compelled tochange by an external force.
Likewise, we all resist change unless it is direly needed. We cocoon into the comfort and conform to a set routine. Why change is necessary? What does change offer us? Is it a choice, or an inadvertent event? All of thisin our this conversation.

We all read biographies, autobiographies of various people. And the takeaways from these readings are the experiences, the memories, and the learnings they had in their life. Now, if these experiences, memories and learnings is what makes them, then if we’re able to put what is our perceived future in the hindsight and see the person we have become then we can clearly see the possibility of making who we are is within ourself. In this conversation, we’re trying to see how our experiences, memories, and our learnings shape who we become, and if that can be consciously done.

In this episode we look into various means and methods through which we can calm the internal conversation. A word of caution though, this episode is not essentially a “how to” but more of a quest in finding these means of relaxation. In that sense we’re not attempting to prescribe any means or methods to relax your mind, rather experientially find if those ways work for us and then choose whether to engage with these means and methods.

Self-care is not a discipline, it is a choice. Often, we struggle in defining what is right for us. Well there isn’t one right answer. However, learning to exercise the appropriate choice can do wonder. In this conversation, we’re not discussing what is the right choice, for most of the time we already know it. We’re neither discussing how to exercise the right choice, simply because that too we already know. But we’re discussing about acknowledging the choices we’re making and simply being able to observe them. What power will that unleash? We try to find it for us, and we don’t know even if we succeed. May this conversation trigger some thoughts in you as well…

There are innumerable shades between black and white. But when it comes to life, we seldom want to acknowledge, let alone see those in-between shades. We want to be definitive, judgemental. What happens if we find the path in-between? Does it alter our perspective about life, about the situation? We try to find that for ourselves through this conversation.

The minimum age to get your driving license is 18. But most of us have chosen our career trajectory when we turned 16! (sic) - Ankur Warikoo
Many of us walk the path laid to us by the societal norm. We get into university by 18, find a job by 21 or 22 and work in that discipline until we grow old. While that was probably the need in the 60s and the 70s, is it still the norm? What is an alternative that will allow us to find the balance between our passion and our profession, our mission and our vocation?
Is there a path outside of the set template? Many Roads Lead to Rome.

This episode is unique as well as spexial in its own way. This is the first podcast of 2023. This is also our first video podcast. As the podcast's title suggests, this episode brings forth 23 nuggets for '23. These are small resolutions that one may opt to imbibe of work on. We're making this podcast as a sort of a reckoner for us and our audience so that we can revisit this episode through out the year whenever we want to reconnect with the resolutions or find something for ourselves.

This episode is neither a moral inquiry nor a judgement on the youth of this country, but an introspective question. If about three-fourths of this nation is under the age of 35, it not only becomes an introspective question to an individual but to the entire nation!
In this episode, we converse about what is happening with our eating habits and our diet, and the pain points in the system as well as within.

In the age of social media, we have strived for instant gratification. And, this does not limit to our presence on social media, but also extends into our learning and education, our career and profession, our daily chores and life! "In theory, it works. But in practice, it doesn't happen like this!", how often have we come across such a sentence? There always has been a gap between academia and professional setup, but now it is getting far more pronounced. Should we simply brace for such a future or is there a simple solution? Instead of complaining about the new generation, we need to see if there is a faultline among the senior professionals so that this gap could be fixed.

There are many tools, platforms, apps, and a gazillion of YouTube videos and Instagram Reels that claim to provide a quick fix for all our barriers that come in the way in making us productive. These hacks once practiced magically transform us into super-human! Well, we all know that it's a gimmick. Yet, many times we give it a try. Is there really a hack for being productive? Why being productive is so necessary? Is our efficiency important? Or, is it our effectiveness? Let's look at that in this conversation.

Is the need for friendship innate or biological or simply evolutionary? More than understanding this intellectually, in this conversation we try to discover for ourselves experientially the nature of friendships and the way we form them.

Sachin Tendulkar recently stopped at a Chai Tapri (Tea Stall) on the way to Goa. He posted that on Instagram. That makes one wonder, how familiar a celebrity's life can be to a commoner!
In light of this incident, let us recognise that with the advent of social media, our day-to-day life is now publicly presented. That combined with seeing how similar the day-to-day life is of such celebrities, makes us feel that we too are a celebrity. What is the impact this is causing on our lifestyle? Let's look at that in this episode of our podcast.

In Photoshop there is an effect the spotlight effect. This effect, say, is used to highlight a particular person in a given group of people or to highlight a particular activity of a person. In this podcast we discuss a spotlight effect that is intrinsically ingrained within us which makes us aware and alerts us in an ongoing manner hinting that everyone is watching us, judging us, and evaluating us. And, based on that assumption, all our actions, emotions, and behaviours emerge. Is the spotlight really present, or it's an effect we unwarrantedly have added?

Nike says "Just Do It." What does it really mean? Phil Knight's philosophy and what Nike meant to him narrated by Simon Sinek initiates this conversation, and then we try and decode what "Just Do It." means to us.
_
Transcript of Simon Sinek's Audio Clip:
The way that Phil Knight used to talk about Nike, I don’t know if you’ve heard the story. He was speaking at a large conference, and he stood up and he said to the audience: If any of you have ever run for exercise, can you please stand up? Most of the room stood up. He said, if you run at least once a week, continue standing up else please sit down; most of the room sits down.
He said, if you run twice a week, please keep standing. A few more sit down. He says, if you run three times a week, rain or shine - regardless of the weather, or the temperature, please keep standing. There are now barely a few people in the room, who’re standing, and he looks out at them and he says that the next time you’re out there before the sun is up, it’s dark, it’s cold, and it’s wet, and you’re running by yourself, we’re the ones standing under the lamp post, cheering you on. That’s how he described Nike.
And, in an instant, you understand what “Just Do It!” means! It has nothing to do with winning. It has everything to do with trying. It has everything with doing. And, his story, his narrative, captures that so exquisitely, and when Nike is at their best, they celebrate the ones who do, not the ones who win.

"If you have an idea that you genuinely think is good, don't let some idiot talk you out of it!"
-Stan Lee
A teenager with his personal problems and associated with an insect that creeps us all - how can he be our superhero? Well, that was the general opinion when Stan Lee proposed the character of Spider-Man. But, against all odds, the character stands the test of time and shatters all the norms that were present. This conversation is about discovering the Spider-Man that is hidden and present within all of us.

When was it the last time that you sketched or drew something - even if with some squiggly lines? Like daily journaling, daily doodling can also bring a pause within - an experience of slowness. Inktober is like a festival started by an illustrator and an artist Jake Parker. It was started in 2009 with the sole intent as a challenge to improve his own inking skills and develop positive drawing habits. It has since grown into a worldwide endeavor with thousands of artists and individuals taking on the challenge every year. You can too. Simply, pause, take a pen, paper, and draw!

The first time I came across somebody who could flick pages and read a book was Vici the robot from the 80's show Small Wonder! But that fascinated me. I had people around me who could, although not as fast as Vici, read considerably fast. And, it's a skill worth pursuing. But does it really benefit us by reading volumes and volumes of books? Let's look at that in this episode.

An old, frail lady is watering her plants. As she does that, she is drenched in the rains. Puzzled Ruskin Bond appears from behind her back with an umbrella to shade her. And, as he brings her under his umbrella, asks her curiously, when it's raining, why are you watering the plants? The old lady replies, it's because the plants are expecting the water from me. Sometimes things don't seem to add up.

Ashneer Grover, a renowned venture capitalist and former MD and Co-Founder of Bharat Pe, expressed in his style his views about the youth in India. While his words seem harsh, there is a certain basis to where he comes from. One might argue about what he said is right or wrong, or his way of saying to be right or wrong, but keeping that aside, in this episode we look at s needed for the Indian youth that will not only succeed them but also secure the future of India with a strong foundation.

Let me first begin by saying that this episode is not a philosophical conversation, but rather an enquiry into the construction of our own identity, and the impact it has on us.
The power of "I" is in knowing it, not in knowing it as we've constructed the image of "I". A lot of times, our understanding of ourselves - as we refer to as "I" is clouded with biases. In that spirit, we intend to ask the question Who is "I"?

In this digital world, we're governed by algorithms. Right from content consumption to our buying habits, from personal data monitoring to tracking of our emotions, everything seems to be using algorithms to control our being. But, is that really true? Were there algorithms even before the computer codes that read our minds? Are there algorithms present in a world outside of a digital world - a real world that we live in?

One thing that is constantly going on along with our breath is language. And if you are, in your head wondering, "what are they talking about?", that very thought is happening in language. We think, observe, emote, feel, experience, and narrate in language. Yet, language is never taken seriously - be it in our education or in our day-to-day life. In this conversation, we look at unleashing the power and the potential of language.

Here are two men discussing in this conversation the casual sexism that lingers around, and what women must be experiencing. At one level, this discussion is important and on another level can we as men, even experience a fraction of what the women are experiencing? We're not sure how sensitive we're to the subject or if we doing justice to the topic. But it is high time that we have an internal conversation about our own actions and assumptions. This conversation is perhaps to instigate that.

This was a pattern in the 90's, and even in 2022 it seems to be so. Does that even seem logical? This conversation is about looking at this template of education.

If one is not self-sufficient with love, emotion, generosity, or kindness then it becomes very difficult for one to even empathize with their own self. And, in this competitive world, we're experts in creating unwanted, unwarranted pressures on ourselves. It is, therefore, necessary (and vital) to realise that it is okay to slow down a bit and to allow ourselves to be in the situation that we are in. Today's conversation on self-compassion is about finding for ourselves what it means and its relevance in the present context.

What is it with ruthless compassion? We see it and celebrate it when we hear instances of such examples... then be it stories of Steve Jobs, Pt. Bhimsen Joshi, Le Corbusier or Mahatma Gandhi...we have seen them being ruthless (and at times almost heartless) with their pupils. Is the seemingly paradoxical phrase the basis for something genius? Or is it downright cruel? Let's look at that in this week's conversation.

If we were to run a scam, a racket, a cartel and so we were ruthless is understandable - at least watching television content, we can assume so. But in the professional world, why do we talk about cut-throat competition, being aggressive and pitiless, and cold-hearted? Is that the norm that we have come to accept? What about qualities like empathy, does it have any space left? Is there decency left in the professional (and personal) space of the day? Can we commit to a better possibility?

In this episode "Lost in Translation" we highlight the different kinds of losses that are incurred in translation and how can one overcome it. Some artists and creators avoid consuming content from other creators to remain untouched by the influence of others. Does that help come up with original ideas? If so, what is the input for that creation? The origin of creation is difficult to trace. That is why many creators give credit to nature, the universe, or the god. We look at this topic and how a collection of dots from different sources and the connection of dots help creation. We hope you like this conversation and get some original ideas for your creation.

About 400,000 years ago, Homo erectus discovered how fire is caused, learned its benefits, and learned to control it for the advantage of shelter, protection and cooking. But before the first fire was ignited, the fire within the Homo erectus was ignited to discover and control fire. Fire has been an integral part of human evolution. This conversation is about igniting that fire within, and above all, how can one learn to sustain and keep that fire within alive.

Whenever an animal lands into new territory and is thirsty, it starts looking for water intuitively. It tries to find cues as to smell the mold or listen to a stream, but when nothing works the animal simply starts taking a step towards the lower elevation. Eventually, it reaches a creek, a valley, or a holding of water where it quenches its thirst. But, what interests us is that while taking the next step towards the lower elevation, it only thinks of that next step and not of the water...
In this episode, we discuss the power of simply taking that next step, and along the way, we explore many other facets and dimensions of that little step.

Raju, a civil engineer from a small town with big dreams lands in a city, along the way he gets confused, struggles to find his way (and identity) in the city and is constantly falling short of meeting the modalities of a city. I'm referring to Raju from the 1992 blockbuster film Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman played by Shah Rukh Khan. It is not just a story of this man but of all those who have migrated to a city and are finding their way. This episode starts with the recitation of the poem "Hum Shehar Chale Aate Hai..." and then it explores the challenges a city poses on all of us and how we navigate ourselves along the way.

In this first episode of the year, we discuss screen addiction, the impact of social media, and how we can stay away from the side effects of the digital world.
If there is a solution, then what is it? Is it possible to stay away from the screen in a world that operates on it? Let's see the litmus test to check where we stand on our digital detox goals.

Truth, when believed, is a lie.
The extension from our previous episode, in this episode we converse to investigate the distinction between intrinsic and mythical reality and what happens when we 'believe' in a 'truth'.

If what I believe in is different from your belief about the same matter, and if either of us believes our version to be true, then is truth absolute? If the truth is relative, then what is absolute? In this episode, we take an abstract conversation in attempting to find the nature of truth, of this very moment.

"I'm not comfortable talking to her...", "Presenting this in front of the board is beyond my comfort zone...", "I'm uncomfortable doing that..." All these are stories we have created to make ourselves comfortable. In this podcast conversation, we look at what becomes available should we choose to step beyond the story that we have created about comfort and discomfort.

Have you ever noticed that a great barber takes all the time in the world to prepare then spray cold water on the face, apply the foaming cream, and gently lather? After spending about 4-5 minutes in this prep, in a matter of a few seconds, he shaves the whole face! In this episode of our podcast, we are conversing exactly about this analogy!

As Sheldon Cooper says in one of the episodes of Big Bang Theory, "Whenever a zombie bites you turn into a zombie, but whenever a Mummy bites, you turn into some schmuck with a Mummy-bite!".
Just like a Mummy, a Pattern too is coming from a past, and breaking that pattern could seem schmuckly disturbing but isn't real! Breaking of an order though leads to new creations...
In our today's podcast, we look into the distinction between a pattern and an order.

Continuing from last week's conversation, this week we dive deeper into the topic and enquire, where the sense of 'being' comes from? What does experience and sense of being really mean? How do we construct it? These, and many more questions we try to embark upon in this episode of the podcast.

Where does the sense of 'I' come from? When did I identify myself as 'I' for the first time? How was this identity build? In this conversation, we try to inquire and identify the origin of 'I' in its form and essence.

The whole conversation of "Living like a Chimp!" was triggered from one of our earlier podcasts. The context of this conversation being, while there are many resemblances between humans and chimpanzees, a chimpanzee does not have the ability to comprehend the future or bring complex references from the past and then create an imaginative world within this moment and experience emotions for things that are not even happening! Then, would it be better to live like a chimp? Let's look at that in this conversation.

While Karma & Kriya both mean action and/ or deed - both are inherently different. One is determined from the past and one is generated in the present moment, one is involuntary and is present whether we want it or not, the other is voluntary and requires our total involvement, one is cyclical and the other is linear. What does it really mean? In this podcast we discuss our thoughts and notions about the topic.

There are many commonalities between a film and a life. In both we involve ourselves deeply, we believe certain parts of it to be true and distance ourselves from certain parts - based obviously on our convenience, we exude our emotions and experience a form of an expression. This candid conversation, rather a khichadi of our thoughts is abstract, random and we hope that provokes our audience to think in their own ways about the subject.

A seven-year-old overhears a young couple's conversation about the plan to buy their first car and asks them in all seriousness, "so, what is your budget?" As hilarious as the situation is, the question perhaps is unwarranted. But we all do that, we all behave like that. Have we noticed our own yap? If you're brave enough to get confronted, then this podcast is surely for you...

As the title of this podcast says, this conversation focuses on the diminishing culture of reading books. While reading was a means to gain knowledge, it probably is an outdated and inefficient medium today, and therefore has diminished in the era of the internet. However, like a candle that reinvented itself through its aroma, symbolizing a quiet moment or a romantic expression, it is, perhaps, time that a book needs to reinvent as well. Reading a book is no longer a mere means to gain knowledge, but it is a means to also slow down, experience the world, cherish the art and ponded, wonder, wander and amaze oneself!

Our life is driven by reasons - in the present world that we live in, more than ever before. Are reasons real? Do reasons have validity? Does this world, the universe, mother nature function on the fundamental basis of reasons? While we may hastily say a big YES, in 'reasons' more than one, the answer could simply be a big NO! What is it then beyond all the reasons we perceive? We try to touch this vague, abstract topic with an inquisitive conversation.

Correction: In the podcast, Prasanna refers to Vijay Hazare and Vijay Merchant as cricketers of the 60s'. However, they played mostly through the 40s' and a bit in the 50s'. The intent and purpose remain the same though - i.e. to highlight the altering stance in the game of cricket the country witnessed through the last five decades as it evolved.

"My body is craving for tea". In this sensation, I realize that there are three types of cravings.
One, a craving that is an innate or a primal one. In this type of craving, our body tells us that we are lacking a vital thing within, and therefore we feel the need for it. The second type of craving is a sensorial one. A sensorial craving emerges mainly to satisfy the sensorial pleasure. The third type of craving is a compulsive craving. Compulsive craving is something to which we are habituated.
In these three types of cravings, what kind of craving is my craving for tea?
Only looking within and enquiring might give an answer to that.

A chain smoker knows that they need to quit smoking; an alcoholic knows the ill effects of alcohol on their body; an unfit, overweight person knows that they need to eat right or hit the gym! Yet, knowing isn't producing the results. We all know, yet we fall short. There is a world of a difference between knowing and doing simply what we already know. Today's podcast is exactly about that!

Words Create World - we say something, collectively we agree and then we create the world we live in. On the other hand, we create our own inner world with our own words, and do not even realize that we've made some mess? Let's look at this inner world that we create with our words in this podcast.

This is an abstract podcast looking at the meanings of words and the way similar seeing meanings become vastly different in their essence.
Within our language, we use words with understanding the meaning of the word but often we overlook the essence - the root of that word. There are different words in a language that seems to have the same meaning but at the core, their essence is worlds apart! To investigate such words, we need to dive deeper into understanding the nuance of language. This, one may not realize, is often shaping who we are, how we live. Through this podcast, we intend to bring attention to a deeper aspect of relativity in language and sensitize our audience.

Habit Hacking is not a "How to" podcast. It's a podcast that discusses and builds on one of our earlier podcasts "Habit vs. Lifestyle". In this podcast, we bring a premise looking at our tendency to pursue as good habits - be it of organising work or managing time about might actually not be a habit, but a culture. It could be a culture to break away from our habit of getting distracted!
Timeboxing is a mere example that we take to discuss the premise. See in your own life, in what domains can you build a culture for yourself.

Have you ever heard Sachin Tendulkar complaining about practicing too hard or Bhimsen Joshi whining about doing eighteen hours of riyaaz a day? If at all we've heard, they would be acknowledging and being appreciative of that activity. This holds true for all individuals - famous or not - to be enjoying and immersing in an activity that they love. For some, if they're lucky, the activity they love also becomes their profession.
Often, in today's day and age, we hear people celebrating hard work and talking in high regard of the individuals who profess "hard-working". But is that a way forward? Is there another alternative to this way of working? Let us look at that and more in this podcast.

We're born curious. We want to not only observe and learn everything but also simply enjoy it - then be it cycling, swimming, or playing frisbee. Slowly, that as a daily activity transforms into a habit. A habit, that we then label either good or bad, judge it, and do it consciously but also forcing ourselves into it. It becomes nothing but a pattern. Lifestyle, on the other hand, probably could be an evolution of a habit. Here there is no compulsion, but one is still conscious of the activity they are involved in. However, the key lies in losing oneself in the act - just like when we were that little, curious child. What would that be like?
While we neither can teach you that nor can give you that experience, the distinction between habit and lifestyle may allow you to touch that sacred space.

Many times, we come across parents and elderly commanding their children “please concentrate”. Is concentration really that important? Is it what we actually want to say to that child? Or, sometimes, do we mean to say “pay attention” and use the word “concentration” instead?
Since childhood, we have – particularly in India – been exposed to these two words “attention” and “concentration”. In today’s podcast, Shantesh and Prasanna converse to try and decode the meaning of the two words and bring a distinction between the two. Why? Simply because, we may have grown up, but those two words still play a significant role in how we operate!

Abhishek Upamanyu - the stand-up comedian's line imitating his father, “…arey tum subah jaldi uthh ke toh dekho!” (… just wake up early and see the difference for yourself!) struck a chord with the youth – particularly the children of Indian parents.
What’s this fascination with waking up early? Is it really beneficial? Or it’s not everyone’s cup of tea? Our conversation in this podcast intends to instigate an inquiry for yourself to find what works best for you.

We’re bound by societal tenets. If we question these tenets and start looking at putting all our acts in the boxes of real or myth – most of them will fall in the box of real. These tenets certainly matter, and they occur real. But are they ‘real’?
Consider the tenet to be the rule of the game. And so, we’re playing a game. But what happens when ten different games are played on one field. It would become chaos!
This podcast is about realizing that the tenet is situated in lore – a sort of a matrix and is meant to be seen as both real and myth

This pandemic has been going on, perhaps much longer than imagined. It’s a difficult time, but at the same time, this pandemic has made us prudent. We’ve not just become practical, experimental, calculative but also spiritual, contemplative, thoughtful… at least I hope this is true. It is the uncertain times that teach us many unexpected things, and yet we don’t find uncertain situations comfortable.
Through this podcast, let us observe the uncertain situation – the unanticipated a bit more closely.

In this episode, we make an attempt to link the book of Fritjof Capra "The Tao of Physics" with the philosophy of (and Anand Gandhi's 2012 film) Ship of Theseus.
The purpose of this linkage is to discover the nature of our existence, not from a biological or philosophical standpoint, but rather an experiential one. Our true innate nature constantly strives to become boundless - but mostly unconsciously. In this episode, we try to find if this innate nature can be comprehended through a conversational revelation.

We, as a human race, are quite curious and are constantly in search of knowing reality. The reality, however, shuffles between subjective reality and objective reality. On the other hand, as we grow and evolve we realize that the entire stride is for something else. We want to find the distinction between reality and absolute truth. The latter is, however, in the innateness of our experience and yet we don't seem to find it.
Taking the backdrop of the recently released Netflix film "The Disciple" (directed by Chaitanya Tamhana, 2021) we try to decipher the distinction between the nature of these fields of realities and the truth. Each one of us, in some way, consciously or unconsciously is on this path. Each one of us, in some way, is a lifelong disciple.

In the context of the ongoing pandemic, we may have witnessed a scenario wherein anticipation of a lockdown some people have queued up to stock their alcohol by risking their lives. While many may condemn this act, the ones standing in that long, endless queue it was a real need of the hour, they aren't able to see the absurdity of that scenario. In situations like this, compulsive nature of our being shows up. In this podcast, we try to see this aspect from which we all operate.

We come across several tools and methods that promise to bring efficiency and efficacy to life. More often, the context is the management of time, resources, money, or something that is valuable to us. The premise being that by bringing efficiency we increase our productivity and that would somehow bring happiness. This podcast questions this assumption and investigates a bit deeper to raise an internal inquiry.

Failure and Integrity have an unsaid connection that ties the two together. But to comprehend the same, one need to look at failure from a different vantage point than the way we're otherwise taught to see as (at least in most cases). This podcast episode attempts to see the same and try and find what it means (and doesn't mean) to fail.

A quick fact check. The incident referred about Mr Anupam Kher in the podcast mentions that his father treated him with mutton samosa, pineapple pastry and ice cream (the last one was actually coffee). It's not important to get the essence of the story, but still clarifying to avoid confusion.

Freeing-up Space is all we intend to do and perhaps, that is why we maintain a to-do list. That freeing-up of space (or time) gives us freedom - a freedom to do whatever we want to, to find our expression, to explore or to learn. A to-do list, therefore, is much more than bringing mere efficiency. However, the same to-do list comes with a certain limitation. This podcast episode is about finding those limitations of a to-do list and exploring what can be achieved by overcoming those inherent limitations of the to-do list.

As we're completing 300 posts on our blog and a half-year since the release of our podcast channel, we take this opportunity to reconnect back with the intent of THIRTEEN. THIRTEEN is about being and creating, and one way to experience the same for us is the morning ritual of writing as a way to empty ourselves. That empty space provides not only a great start for the day but also gives clarity to our actions. Our actions tend to become responsive to the situation rather than reactive. And, it makes us sensitive and sharp in observing situations from a distance and ourselves - from within.
Through this podcast, we invite you to join the journey of morning journaling as a way to reconnect and rekindle with ourselves.

We always love to tell stories. When I say “we”, I mean the entire human race. We make our entire life from stories. We make it so real that we believe that the stories are real life. But they are stories – therefore, fictional or a figment of our imagination. If that is so, then what is real? Well, it’s nothing!
In this episode we shatter the glass that the new age terminologies such as - "Live in the moment", "be in the right now", "this is it!" - create. Well, more than shattering the glass, we intend to simply look if it has any validity or it's a myth like many other ones that we like to believe in... Liste now, and share your views and thoughts with us.

Deep within us lies a reptilian brain that triggers the fight or flight mechanism. It's primitive, and the very existence of which has allowed us to survive and find and mend our ways through the evolutionary ladder. But more often than imagined it's triggered, even when the threat is not real but only imaginary. This reptilian brain which helps us survive is also an impediment to our own growth and progress.
In this podcast, we talk about where all this reptilian or lizard brain kicks in and the need for challenging this reptilian brain so as to grow further and surpass our own limitations. This podcast also looks at how to challenge this reptilian brain.

Mandala is an episode that showcases the ephemerality of the sand art ritual the Buddhist Monks practice, and through that draws parallels to the cycle of life. Just to observe, on the face of it the Mandala making is a fascinating ritual but it has such deep, profound connection with life and the phases of life.
"Mandala" meaning centre in Sanskrit, represents the Buddha in the centre of the Mandala formation. It also is an abstract representation for seeing oneself through Buddha. The practice lasts for weeks, and when the art is completed, it's wiped off. It is hard to comprehend that weeks of effort is wiped off just without any guilt, void or pain.

Prasanna encounters an insect during his morning walk. In his stride, without noticing that little creature, he's about to trample over it but manages to save it just in time. He looks at the beautiful creature and is glad to have saved it. So, Prasanna takes out his phone to take a photograph of this colourful insect. Just then, a chameleon comes out of nowhere, grabs the insect and disappears in the bushes.
In just a few moments, Prasanna experienced shifts through different emotions - accomplishment, compassion, despair, helplessness, guilt. This podcast is a conversation about this incident, life and experiences that we all go through.

What is Faith? An emotion, a thought, a method or a ritual? In this podcast, we look at faith from the point of view of a rationalist and enquire if it still works, and if it does, why? Also, in this podcast, we investigate how even the so-called rational or logical minds hold faith without believing in it!

Minimalism is about living with less, this includes consuming minimal resources, minimal content, minimal finances, minimising of sensory effects, minimising of clutter and by doing this the intent is to bring focus on the thing we intend to do, reduce distraction and stress and the jitteriness, and have more freedom and productive time for self. Many blogs, articles, YouTube videos, books promise this outcome. But, does it really work?
"about MINIMALISM" explores around this premise through an impromptu conversation between Prasanna and Shantesh.

From our childhood, we see that most games we play are zero-sum games. That is, in order to win it is a requirement that the other person/ other party loses the game. So to win a game both in sports and in life we start focusing on capabilities which help us win the game. Slowly we also start playing games to make sure that the other person is lost every time he or she plays with you. This approach may be good in some types of sports but in the open world, it doesn't work in the long-run. We all need partners and teams who compliment us and thus winning is not a one side phenomenon but a journey of synergy.
The execution of ideas is possible by co-creation and co-operation with not one but sometimes several members. With a worldview of abundance, we can see that there is something for everyone. It is a positive-sum game where both can win. So the best philosophy in an open world is that of "Win-Win" or "No Deal". This approach is very well constructed as the Fourth Habit in the book "Seven Habits of Highly Effective People" by Dr Stephen R. Covey.

Ikigai is a Japanese term meaning "a reason for being". Ikigai has a fluid and an evolutive nature, and is not a destination but rather a journey in discovering self. In this podcast, we look at what ikigai means, the nature of it and how one can find it. We also look at what is the relation between a long and fulfilling life and discover the distinction between our purpose and our motive.
With the beginning of 2021, many of us will plan this year, will define how we aspire to carry this year further. May we all find our purpose by finding our ikigai. Our warmest wishes for a happy year ahead!

Did you know the word 'priority' was never plural? It's a word from the 1400s, and it always was singular. It meant the very first or the prior thing. In the book "Essentialism", Greg McKeown describes that it is only in the 1900s we pluralised the term and started talking about priorities. Illogically, we reasoned that by changing the word we could bend reality.
One such other word, that is overused, is 'Manage'. In this twenty-first century world, we love to manage many things - money, relationships, family, time, resource, work, profession, anger, stress etc. The list is endless and so is this pursuit. But is it we really mean 'manage' or we intend something else? Find the answer to this quest in this episode of the podcast!

We human beings devised a very unique way to live. Stories! We tell them all the time. None other species on this planet are involved, like we are, into creating a narrative that drives their life. We humans, call this story purpose.
In the podcast, we also discuss analogies from films, instances, interviews of personalities, their personal sharings and Viktor Frankl's book "Man's Search for Meaning", to try and touch upon the question, what the true nature of purpose is?

This year surely has been a challenging one, but can 2020 be labelled as unlucky or a bad year? As the new year is approaching, the labelling for this year is at a rampant high – be it in the form of memes or as beliefs. For many, 2020 has proven to be unlucky, or has it?
This podcast episode explores and looks into how 2020 really has been. We don't really know if it was good or bad, but we assure you that this episode will provoke you to think from a different point of view.

Often we ignore the internal conversation that is constantly seeking our attention. The root of that attention lies in expectations. They could be simple expectations from parents, siblings, spouse, children or friends. But what we don't realise is that those expectations are the root cause of many of our problems. This podcast is a conversational exploration to see what these expectations lead us into and how we can switch-it-off!
This podcast episode is inspired by one of our daily writings post titled "Switch-it-off" that was published on August 11, 2020.

Inspired by Jiddu Krishnamurti's definition of truth to be a pathless land, this podcast is about asking a series of questions. What is the meaning of truth? Where can one find truth? Or, has it to be even found? Do we see it or are we in denial of it? We try to enquire these and many more questions with a hope that this enquiry shall continue as a sensitive observation to look oneself within. _ Thank you for listening. Recently, a humble, down to earth idli landed into a controversy that was triggered by some online banter. That triggered to a thought that why do we identify ourselves with something that belongs to our region or to something which we have an emotional connect. While there is nothing wrong in that, how that attachment causes unconscious and unintended reactions without realisation. We wrote about this in a series of daily writings on THIRTEEN in the last week of October, and we guess that wasn’t enough that we thought of making this podcast as an extension of those writings!

Inspired by one of the morning journal entries, Penning Emptiness enquires the necessity of creating an emptiness. The podcast looks into the role of writing each morning - an act to bring an emptiness and what becomes available on achieving this catharsis. Finally, the podcast completes by looking at the necessity to simply take actions from a point of emptiness rather than lingering on many thoughts and not acting at all!
The text that inspired the podcast is written below:
"The job of a pen is to facilitate writing. Facilitating writing is not writing itself. Writing need not mean that it’s always a creation. Creation need not mean that it’s always good. And, good need not mean that it’s good for all. The good here is contextual, creation is subjective and what gets written is beyond the control of the pen, and therefore the pen cannot get disheartened by the fact that whatever it facilitates may or may not be worthwhile, but it simply does its job. It simply keeps writing."

Kantabai is a fisherwoman whose story we covered a few weeks ago in our daily afternoon reads that we post on THIRTEEN. The story titled, "Pin drop silence in the fish-market" touched on the subject of inner silence that we're aware of but are unable to find. But, our protagonist, Kantabai's ability to find that despite the hustle and bustle of the fish-market that she spends her time in is quite commendable.
This podcast looks at the importance of this inner silence. It attempts, to enquire on how one can consciously achieve it?

The Art of Shaving is not really a lesson in grooming. This, in fact, is a podcast episode that talks about creating an opportunity to be able to experience moments as is, and about finding joy in mundane and banal tasks that we do throughout the day. The podcast questions why do we feel the urge to rush and what becomes available in slowing down.
Take a few minutes to listen to this and see what opens up for you. If you're able to connect, do consider sharing it on your social media platforms, and with your friends and family.

This episode looks at two diametrically opposite situations - a daily routine that a monk follows, its simpleness and silence, and the constant inner chattering that we all experience including probably that monk. The episode is an enquiry to look into how do we deal with this constant inner dialogue that runs and to bring calmness to the monkey mind.

Our very first episode releasing today is a tribute to Mahatma Gandhi. Born today, 151 years ago, Gandhiji remains a big inspiration to the world and to us. So we thought, what could be a better way than paying our respects to him by dedicating our very first episode to his cause?
"Gandhiji's Goat" looks into some banal incidents in Gandhi's life, in which too his intentions, his purpose of life is reflected. Come join us in remembering Mahatma Gandhi and to connect to his way of being on this day.
