Talking with an old friend, Dr. Sayuj Paudel; frinedship of more than two decades, reminiscing about shared memories and experiences, feels like a warm embrace—a comforting return to a familiar place. Our conversations span the years, weaving together the threads of our lives. This friend, a supporting husband, has been a steadfast presence, standing by my side through life’s twists and turns. His unwavering support has been my anchor, grounding me even when the waves of uncertainty threatened to pull me under. As a caring dad, he’s worn many hats: storyteller, playmate, protector. I can picture him chasing after little ones, lifting them high in the air, their laughter echoing through the house. His love is tangible, woven into the fabric of our family.

And then there’s his professional life—a successful physician in California. We delve into the intricacies of his work—the long hours, the delicate balance between science and compassion. He shares stories of patients, their struggles and triumphs, and I listen, awed by the impact he makes. We talk about life—the mundane and the extraordinary. The rhythm of our days—the morning coffee, the evening walks, the quiet moments when the world fades away. And in those conversations, I glimpse the heart of a physician—the empathy, the resilience, the weight of responsibility.

The MD and DO differences come up, and we dissect them like curious students. We explore the nuances—the paths they take, the philosophies they embrace. It’s a dance of letters, a symphony of healing, and we marvel at the diversity within medicine. Ah, the USMLE scenario in Nepal—a tale of dreams and hurdles. We discuss the aspirants, their determination, the sleepless nights spent poring over textbooks. The exam room becomes a battleground, and we cheer for every victory, mourn every setback.

We, medschool2.0 recently had a chat with few of the OMS II. Concerns from the majority of the people were wondering 💭 🤔how regional and non-regional rotations work. To begin with, regional rotations are those rotations which you do in a single hospital scenario whereas non-regional are those you rotate in different hospitals.

Some students were also asking how does a third year rotation look like 🧐. I don’t blame them, for I was in the same shoe when I began my rotations and because those sort of things are really learnt by experiences, rather than in lecture hall .

To tackle all these cushions and concerns we at Medschool 2.0 had this opportunity to call on two great OMS III; Madison O’Donnell 💎 and Katherine Milford 💎 from NYITCOM.

Two medical students will be knighted Dr in the coming months. We, at Medschool2.0, know these superstar future doctors and couldn't be more proud to see the path they took a while back is coming to its fruition.

As a third-year medical student the ERAS (other kind), NRMP, and Rank Order List (ROL) are kind of daunting cause there are only so many resources and so many layers of each to gather information from while stepping into as a 4th-year med student. These two brilliant personalities not only were brave enough to talk about these topics where other people would hesitate and make us understand these topics but also gave a clear-cut and precise in-depth analysis of the residency application and the whole shebang.

Abu-Bakr Malik and Karan Malik, both OMS IV were kind enough to give their valuable time during the period of residency applications and ongoing interview sessions while doing their electives and Sub-Is. We must have done some good deed that they humbly accepted the request to be on the show and share their knowledge and experiences. We are lost for words to thank them.

First and foremost; there were some technical issues with the recording so at times there might be some static sounds till minute 18 and we are really sorry about that. This is such a good talk that we risked the static sounds are are producing it.

Hello and welcome to the new episode. Managing medical school in itself is a huge task and doing it for the second time I cannot even start to explain how tough it is mentally and socially as well and now put family and kids on top of it. This mammoth topic that we are simply saying or reading about is a whole lot different ball game when it comes to actual live that life and manage it in real life.

A mother is in our personal opinion one of the greatest if not the greatest gift a person can have. These two moms who relentlessly without any doubt of pound working their way rather paving their way to their future as a medical doctor and managing home front, their family and kids and society in general. The grittiness that they posses and the hardship they go through to make it and with a smile in their face and to us looks like a walk in the park but for them what they actually had to go through and not only succeed but thrive upon is the story of this episode. This is motivation 101 right here.

I wish this episode reaches far and beyond and I hope people get motivated and as these two superwoman (Faiqa Zafar OMS III and Viktoria Taranto OMS III from NYITCOM) said it is possible to have kids and family and succeed in medical school.

HERE WE REBOOT.

Second season, episode 1. We, here at medschoo2.0 are preparing for our board exam and were really in a dilemma to whether to start a new season now or not but then again we thought if not now then when. Also, we had a chance of once a lifetime to get the “ HOLY TRINITY ” of NYITCOM. Dr. Goldstein, Dr. Plummer and Dr. Pavia who needless to say are immensely intelligent people who sometimes also write other things than abstracts and research works. They have a group called Creative Writing Group where they submit their works (songs, poems, short stories and such) and they analyze, dissect and try to understand each other writings and help the members reach their zenith of possibilities along with lots of positive vibes and encouragement. Today we are bringing their process and bringing this little gem of a group into much light.

We thought this would be a wonderful talk; something that is not regular medschool talk and just start a fresh. We did however had to talk a little about boards and stuff but we are leaving that to you, our valuable and precious listeners to decide what part you liked the most. We have incorporated some bloopers in this episode as well. We are hoping to get feedback on those if you are looking forward to those in future episodes.

Lastly, we are very thankful and appreciative of all our esteem guests that took time off from their very busy schedules and sat down with us and talked about their creative process.

This is Jyoti Bhattarai, who was a working physician few years back but now is a medical student starting from scratch. In this episode we have tried to start the story from the beginning going back in time, going back in memory lane; how medical school happened in the first place and how it happened the second time. We also tried to explain why go through this path again, but that is a very difficult thing to be told in one episode. Here at medschool 2.0 we tend to bring guests that are expert in their fields and also help put a fresh perspective in our minds. We can call ourselves lucky enough to have Dr. Sheldon Yao, Professor and Chair OMM Department at NYITCOM come to our podcast.
Dr. Yao received his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine at NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine (NYITCOM) in 2002. He completed his internship and family practice residency at Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip, N.Y., and afterwards completed a one-year fellowship in neuromuscular medicine-osteopathic manipulative medicine (NMM/OMM) at North Shore-LIJ Plainview Hospital (N.Y.). He is dual-board certified in family medicine/osteopathic manipulative treatment and NMM/OMM.

He has accomplished so much in such a short period of time that we are amazed by his passion and work ethics towards the betterment of medicine and DOs in general . We are forever in his debt and will be always thankful for him for doing an episode in such a short notice and in his busy schedule.

We learnt a lot during the episode and we hope fellow students be it DOs or MDs and even pre meds can get some more insight into the world of ever changing field of medicine.

It's a daunting kind of feeling going into medical school for the first time. Most of us have certain mind set and ways to do things and have some kind of pre conceived notion that we would do this and wont do that. Wouldn't it be a wonderful thing if someone who recently experienced that would shed some lights on what to expect from med school while not forgetting the fights we won during pre med days.

In this episode that's exactly what we have tried to achieve. We are not sure we are in the position to "advice" the new incoming class but what we surely can do is share our stories and maybe some mistakes along the way we made that we don't want the new class to repeat and help them have a smooth sailing in adjusting to the new place. Michael Gao OMS II and Vincy Mathew OMS II have exactly done the same. They spoke the truth and tried to help the incoming class by sharing their stories. After all we are in the field of helping mankind.

Mr. David Oroza is assistant director of Admissions at NYITCOM. We had the opportunity we couldn't miss to talk to him. We tried to learn from  his illustrious career if there are certain things that really matters while applying to a med school specifically at NYITCOM, does MCAT (number of attempts affect or not) and many more. We had to focus on NYTICOM more and not med school all over the country because that would be very unfair to him and to us here at medschool2.0 but we are sure that there are plenty of things that Mr. Oroza talked that can be helpful for the future applicants. 

We tried to shift our gear towards administrative personnel as well instead of just being focused towards students. However, this podcast will be always talking about students  in some shape or form to help the students and give an insight to lives of  med students and how to help one. In the school, I am also involved in Student Ambassador Program as one of the few extra curricular activities. In that process one is sure to meet different people and in no time make acquaintances and that flourishes into a friendship . In the same process I met Baira, a second year student who is a very head strong girl and has a great personality. No hesitation in what she wants in life and what she wants to achieve in future. You would surely be inspired by her.

Baira, courageously and with without any hesitation was gracious enough to accept the invitation to be in the show. Being a second year med student, currently on a summer break with research projects, studying and vacation planning she took her valuable time out to be with us and shared her story how and why she chose to be a med student. What really inspired her to be in medical field is a story in its own but her real inspiration behind choosing Psychiatry as a residency right from the beginning post graduation is one of the most inspiring stories I have ever heard, the kind you hear or read in the story books. She was real and brutally honest in sharing the story that shaped her early beginning in her med school and fixing her focus and energy in Psychiatry. We also talked about her being from Sri Lanka and what and how she wants to help grow south asian community in her own little ways.

We wish nothing but the best for her future endeavors and we do not have a single doubt that she not only will be a very successful physician but also a beautiful human being. We wish and really want to talk to you again; real soon.

I walked into a memory lane with this episode. This is my humble attempt at disclosing and sharing things from my first med school and how things worked back then. I am sure things have changed by now and in no way I am trying to undermine the education system or education I received from either school. Its just my personal walk in the memory lane and what a beautiful ride that was. I have a huge amount of gratitude towards my first med school because of its installation of faith and believe and love for medicine I am going through the med school process again. I just want to say thank you and the passion is still on and in-fact its burning.

 In this episode we have tried to touch mental health issue as well. It was a social taboo when I was growing up and I have witnessed first hand experience of the side effect of it being a topic of taboo. In no way it shouldn't be spoken about. It should not only be spoken about but also be shared about.  Me being a potter-head I have to share the quote “Happiness can be found even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light.” — Albus Dumbledore from Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. If you know anyone having any kind of mental health issue please help them, guide them, be with them. Let's take mental health as serious as physical health.

This is Jyoti Bhattarai, who was a working physician few years back but now is a medical student starting from scratch. In this episode we have tried to start the story from the beginning going back in time, going back in memory lane; how medical school happened in the first place and how it happened the second time. We also tried to explain why go through this path again, but that is a very difficult thing to be told in one episode. I was about to go into Law as well and what stopped me from that pursuit; I have tried to share that part of the story as well. There are many inspirations and amalgamation of situations that made me choose med school again; we have tried to bring that into light. This episode will be about second chances and never giving up attitude and, in this episode, as well I have tried to spark that fuel of never giving up attitude and how second chances work.
