Have you ever just gone along with the crowd because it's "just what everyone always does". We are at a moment in our current culture that people are beginning to question these norms... in some ways good and in others for the bad. Here in 2 Kings, the practice of just going along without questioning has led Israel to an unimaginable end... definitely a cautionary tale!

If I'm correct... that illness results from sin, then how do we explain the fact that Elisha dies from an illness? Doesn't that blow my theory out of the water, because surely Elisha is a holy man and above sin? It's a difficult question to grapple with, but we've got to fit the answer into the Bible as we read it as a whole if my theory of "Bible as Health Manual" is to have any legs.

I believe the Shunamite woman could have thought she had much to lose by witnessing to Jehoram, king of Israel. It certainly might not have looked on the surface like the most politically smart move. Nonetheless, she was blessed first with the miracle of getting her son back from the dead... she was blessed again by her willingness to witness about it... her choice! Free will cuts both ways- we are free to use our trials to testify to God's goodness (and witness yet another miracle as God uses that witness in His plans for those who hear), or not.

The story of the Shunamite woman and her borrowed bottles of oil is a balm to anyone who has ever been at their wits end wondering how they will cover the bills. This one feels personal. The lesson that we can't receive when our hands (or our jars) are already full is one of the most important ones I've learned over the past couple years.

The story about Elisha and the bears could be disturbing if we don't look closely at what is really happening. Is it a PSA from God about bullying? Is God spiteful or oversensitive? Or is it a warning to watch our words and our walk each and every minute of our lives?

Do you think of nature as passively serving us? I don't! I believe that nature (creation) is capable only of glorifying God- of mirroring God's design and intentions. But I don't think the animals, plants, rocks, soil, etc. are all just sitting around as inanimate objects for us to use. I think there is a will to support humanity in their work on God's path.... it is an interesting thing to ponder in light of the story of Elijah and the ravens- what do you think?

When you make a commitment, do you hedge your bets? Plan for what will happen if you fail, give up, or lose interest? When Elisha prepared to follow Elijah he burnt absolutely everything he had depended on to sustain him before meeting Elijah. Total commitment. What would happen if we followed God's plans for the health of our mind, body, and soul in the same way?

God doesn't ever break his covenants... but he allows us the free will of breaking them from our end. You see, everything God offers us requires our input... sometimes it's as simple as our acceptance of the gift, but other times it takes real commitment on our part.

It's important we understand this concept. The health of our bodies is a covenant. He gave us a human body that was perfectly designed to heal and maintain health... we have the free will to break that covenant and follow our own path instead of maintaining it the way He commanded. Unfortunately, the consequences are similar to what we read about with Israel in I Kings.... we can lose our legacy for generations.

Who was the Queen of Sheba, and where did she come from? We don't know for sure, but the evidence points to a meeting that would echo into the nativity!

The wise and curious queen came from a land of learned men. She never would have traveled so far just to meet Solomon if he didn't have something more- and she had questions on her heart that only a man like him could answer. Solomon anchored his wisdom in God, and he walked out what he believed in integrity. We all have the opportunity to witness in the way Solomon did to the queen- but it takes a daily commitment to live the truth of creation.

Each stone was broken out of the earth, polished and smoothed to compliment its unique character AND to be a perfect compliment for the four stones it would be stacked against. This was done off site, with no tools present at the tabernacle build site. The craftsmanship needed to get this done offsite, without being present at the final stacking is beyond anything I can imagine. It should speak volumes to us about how well God designs anything He builds- whether He is speaking inspiration into a human carrying out His will... or whether He is co-creating every day as we choose how to build our bodies (the temple of our time). Every stone matters- and we need to keep that in mind daily!

It turns out that David's choice of where to send Solomon to be anointed as king wasn't random. Gihon was a military stronghold, an amplifier of sound, and a connection to the creation of the world! God's living waters were there to give life to the garden, and as Solomon came into his throne they were a powerful symbol of God's choice and His promise that this line of kings would one day produce the King of Kings, called living water in an of Himself.

Today I'm looking at a famous "deadly" plant. Almost everyone knows to fear it, but the interesting thing is... there might not actually be a reason for that. One of the most successful campaign to separate us from God is found in separating us from His creation. Fear of plants separates us from using them in our bodies and communing with God in the way He intended... it's probably time to re-examine the things you "know" to be bad for you in nature- maybe you've been fooled!

King David was so very imperfect, he sinned often... and thoroughly! For that reason he is an important figure to study when we want to see what sin does to our bodies (physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, AND social). David wasn't just a cautionary tale though- he was acutely aware that there was a connection between his sin and illness or suffering. He also recorded his awareness of the connection of healing in his life that occurred as soon as he repented and returned to the path of God's design... God's WAY.

David felt his strength was in not being "thorny"... meaning he could easily be taken "in hand" when God felt he needed some correction. He said that almost in the same breath as he continued to make selfish choices- so God tested him. If presented with a choice of consequences for his actions- would he choose the hard, personal road to take responsibility and receive correction? Or would he choose to take an easier road that shared the consequences with others?

What would you do? You are faced with the free will to duck the consequences of your poor health choices... or own up to them, do what is sometimes painful and difficult and walk back to Him. Sometimes saying we would choose the more responsible and direct path is easier said than done!

Covenants and promises.... they're kind of like the root causes of illnesses. You can't ignore them forever. Even if you've broken your word, or stepped off God's path, it doesn't apply to just that moment in time. We can't move on without fixing the problem... broken promises and bad health choices will wait for us until we're ready to face them.

That favorite holiday flick is all about how your life affects the lives of others in ways you may not always recognize. Today's reading reminds us that this is not only true in "good" ways, but also that we must be mindful about how our sin affects others. When David sinned by sleeping with Bathsheba, it set off a number of dominos that God could see... but David couldn't. Reminding us that - the responsibility we have to stay on Gods path doesn't just affect us!

Any parent who has ever experienced the loss of a child struggles with why. Why would a just God allow babies to die. But what do we do with the idea that God would intentionally allow a baby to die as a punishment for a parent's sin? The story of David and Bathsheeba requires a bit of wrestling... to do it we have to be very clear about who God is. Today I'm tackling this head on as a mother who has experienced a miscarriage and a professional who studies preconception health. I have the beginnings of a comforting place to stand for myself... what about you?

Have you ever wanted something so badly that you spent all your time praying for it. It might have consumed your every waking thought- to the extent that you decided that God's quiet must mean you need to get out there and help yourself?

I think it's pretty common. I've DEFINITELY done it. But, when you got what you thought you needed it didn't go so well, did it? The story of Amnon and his sister is much more serious than wanting to run ahead of God on your career or life aspirations... after all, when you add rape the crime becomes much more serious. But don't let that cloud the message- when we run ahead of God's plan because of what we want, it is a sin just the same... anything outside of God's will or timing will always end badly.

Who were the blind and the lame that David hates in 2 Samuel Chapter 5? The answer is found in putting the situation in context. Once we understand that this was figurative and not literal... we can ask ourselves- are there blind and lame people that fit into this passage from the present?

One of those BIG lessons we have to learn as God's children is that when He takes something away, it isn't in our best interest to go chasing after it.

It's part of learning obedience to trust that God removes things from our life because He loves us. There is always something better coming!

We are a finite being with very limited resources contained within our bodies. This means that we can only achieve a given set of things in a day, a week, a lifetime. Walking God's path in the purpose of our lives uses those resources wisely and efficiently- funneling them all toward our purpose without deviating. Any time we make a choice to follow a purpose dictated by our preference or that of those around us, it is unavoidable that we will also give up a portion of God's purpose for us....

I was struck by the similarities in the parable of the trees from Judges 9 and what happens as humans select different properties when breeding our food (plants). The idea of becoming king was silly.. because to do it, the plants would have to give up some essence of the purpose for which God made them to devote the time and energy to the new job.

In the same way, in nature, when we select for some trait that pleases us as humans, we are DESELECTING something else. We can't always know what that is, or what the ramifications of our choice are because we don't have the vision that God has in relation to His creation. When we select for leaf shape in a medicinal, we may be deselecting for a compound that previously was beneficial to the organs in our body.

Altering our path to please ourselves, or other humans is a dangerous path. It may seem innocent- such as selecting for your favorite color in a tulip- but it is no less an act of playing God. Many times, we might be co-creating in a game of delighting in nature... but sometimes- as in the prospect of becoming a king... we are asking for that plant to give up some of its essential purpose as was originally designed by the Creator- all without any knowledge of the damage we are doing.

We all are guilty of trying to go our own way instead of staying on God's path from time to time. The degree to which we damage ourselves and/or others is determined by how far we stray.

After David was rejected by the Philistine commanders he literally walks back to his people at Ziklag...only to find that his neglect has allowed disaster. It is the first step toward setting things right and returning to the path that God had anointed him to.

Walking away from God's plan for our life is like walking away from His plan for our bodies... we get to choose. The faster we wise up, repent, and return to His plan the less pain and suffering all around.

Young king David was in an impossible situation. He idolized the king and had become like a brother to the king's son. God came along an annointed him the new king, all while Saul still lived. As both an idol and a father figure, he clearly craved Saul's approval... or at least an absence of the desire to kill him whenever they were together.

David really fixated on HIS vision of a happy family/friendship instead of living in God's reality... to the extent that he ran away from his people, avoided the job God had given him.... lost himself in the lies he had to create to keep reality at bay and ultimately found himself lined up ready to do battle with his own people!

David's early life is filled with anguish as we can see in Psalms... but it seems to me that a lot of his pain of his own making. We all have the capacity to choose emotional misery or peace... many times it just comes down to whose approval matters most- man or God's.

We aren't designed to procrastinate, especially when we are avoiding God's plans. In fact, it's the definition of sin... to go our own way, to serve our own desires or to seek our own counsel instead of God's.

We all do it though- put off something that is uncomfortable emotionally or physically. The problem is that the consequences of avoidance are always more uncomfortable. The answer? Lean into God's direction immediately, with full faith that God has got you and will see you through anything that comes.

David ran from Saul.. hiding from God's purpose for his life. The last few chapters of I Samuel are full of the pain that resulted.

In today's episode we're looking at the circumstances around two different swords. One is given and one was taken. The symbolism surrounding their stories couldn't be more different.

If you thought King David's story was about someone perfect who was chosen by God because he had it all together in the faith department... maybe it has always seemed like David is a nice story, but not really an aspirational figure. I think there is something here that is encouraging. Relationship with God is not something we are necessarily born with... it develops like any other relationship we have in our lives. It takes diligent work and commitment to grow deep and meaningful.

If we're being honest about reading the Bible as true, cover to cover, we can't just gloss over the parts that seem to make God sound bad. My faith needs to be strong enough to lean into the difficult spots and question my Creator to find an answer.

In 1 Samuel 16 we're told that God "sent an evil spirit" to torment Saul. How do we reconcile that with the God we know? Does it make sense that God would control evil spirits? That God would basically haunt someone who displeases Him to the point of mental illness, anxiety and irrational anger?

I'm wrestling with this passage today- and invite you to entertain my theory about this story. I think the notion of a "spirit of fear" that we see elsewhere in the Bible might not just be an abstract concept... but a real presence that is part of this world. See if you agree.

We are told to "put on the armor of God". We are told that we have the ability to do that, but it's an important distinction that not just anyone can put on God's armor- it's only those whose identity has been rooted in Christ. Only Christians can take up God's protection.

Saul wanted to be a good king, but it's pretty clear that his identity, his self-worth and self-esteem were not rooted in God... they were rooted in man. His stability and saftey revolved around what men thought of him. And this was his biggest downfall. His armor was ill-fitting and not able to provide protection to David when it was offered... David already had another armor on. What a powerful visual for us to understand that an identity rooted in Christ allows us to walk very differently in the world, provides us mental and emotional peace and confidence that those who root their identity in the world can never know.

The almighty "If/Then" statement... part math, part logic and part contract. The clear understanding here is that there are two sides to the equation. It only works if both sides are balanced one with the other.

We are constantly being romanced, in current Western culture, into believing that somehow life will be so much sweeter if we just let someone else do it... my grandmother was perhaps in the generation where this started in the extreme. Romanced into shortcuts in the kitchen- adding aluminum into her food and her brain, eating plastic masquerading as a better butter substitute... there is no end to the destruction that "free time" is causing to our health- physical, mental, emotional AND spiritual.

The Isrealites thought they'd be on easy street by selecting a king to rule over them. Turns out they didn't realize they were actually still on the hook for the other side of the contract. Nothing comes without a cost.

When Israel begged for a king so they could be like all the other nations around them Samuel told them they were being wicked. God flat out said that they were rejecting Him in favor of an earthly king.

But God has always put people in positions of authority... Moses, priests, judges, men at the head of household... all of those leadership positions are sanctioned- why not kingship?

Turns out, we humans have limited resources. Inevitably, we find yourselves diverting a portion of what we were intending to give to God over to those who rule us. So is it possible that power can either be holy or wicked- depending on who gets God's due?

What happens when God's hand rests heavily on you and you have no intermediary? The Philistines cast golden representatives of the tumors that happened in every one of their cities as the ark of the covenant traveled among them!

In the old testament, it took a priest who had lived a life set apart and had done a LOT of work to make himself pure enough to stand in God's presence. We live under the new covenant and our intermediary was gifted to us- if we choose to accept- in the form of Jesus. When we accept Him into our heart, God can turn His eye upon us without us suffering as a result.

God's raw power is awesome, fearsome, terrible... we get a glimpse of that during cataclysms and storms in nature. Imagine that being bound into a box that your family carries with you. You'd respect it right? Today I am pondering golden tumors, the ark of the covenant and the nature of disease.

Hannah made a deal with God for healing her infertility- that she would give the only thing she owned in the world right back to Him... for life!

That meant that she would give Samuel away to Eli the priest to be raised. Eli, it turns out, may have been a decent priest, but he was an absolute disaster as a father... raising his own two sons seemingly without any intention over their lives and little to no discipline for their revolting actions.

So... how did Samuel turn out different? Was it in his genes... or was something else going on that set his life firmly on God's path?

Don't let anyone ever tell you that God does not think women are important! Here in Ruth is proof positive that honors a woman's choice in powerful ways... allowing these choices to change the course of history and take part in His ultimate plans.

Men may be featured in a lot of the stories told in dogmatic churches... but if you look at the quiet presence of women- it is clear that God did not create them to be bit players in the history of "man".

For all of us, there is something to be understood in the choice that Ruth made. When we put God ahead of our own life's desires, He takes care of us in ways we never would have dreamed.

The meek and humble are said to inherit the earth, but I don't think that happens simply because of their character.

There is an action that the meek and the humble take in relation to "the earth" that guarantees there is something to inherit. I think David captures it beautifully in Psalms 37. He says as a contrast that the "wicked take without paying back".

When it comes to any earth, or soil, or land that we are in relationship with... if you do not give back into the soil after you take out- you bankrupt the system. God's laws for our health and the health of the land dictate that we be humble and return what we've taken. Who knew that the Bible spoke of composting?!?!?

Are we ill because we (or someone in our family) sinned? When we're sick- does it mean we're "bad"?

If we believe that God designed our bodies, we must accept that He knows how to make that design work best.

If we further believe that sin is anything that goes against His will... any time we go our "own way"...we have to accept that not following His instructions for our bodies is a sin.

One of the consequences of sin, then, is illness. This gets complicated the more humans sin and then have children... as generationally we experience the consequences of those sins as disease. God knew that- and loved us enough to warn us... and then make provisions for our way back to His path of health.

I'm sure you were encouraged as a kid to be careful who your friends were... that you might be trying to do the right thing, but if your friends were up to no good, you might get caught up in the mess?

Unfortunately, it is all too human to want to fit in.. to be liked... and so it's pretty easy to make compromises that make us look more like the people around us than what God wants us to look like. We're told pretty clearly that if God doesn't recognize His will in our lives when things get real, we're not going to like the outcome.

Struggling to live your life without compromise... have friends and go amongst those who need to see God's light- it's a real struggle!

It's incredibly easy to consult ourselves when faced with life's choices. Sometimes we may feel like our problems are too trivial to bother God with... and sometimes we seek answers within ourselves because we like our answers better than God!

The trouble with looking for our own answers... or asking folks who will back up our biases? We often wind up in ridiculously, fantastically, awful situations that could have been avoided if we'd sought God's wisdom and heart instead of our own. Today's reading is filled with tales of folks who learned that the hard way....

Just because your mama prayed you into this world doesn’t mean you’re walking with God.

Samson had a calling on his life… but not much interest in answering it. Entitled. Impulsive. Reckless. Sound familiar?

His mom vowed him to God from the womb — but a personal relationship with the Lord isn’t something anyone can do for you.

In the end, God used Samson’s tantrums for His purpose. But what would’ve happened if Samson had really surrendered?

Ever found yourself bargaining with God in a desperate moment? You’re not alone — but the Bible warns us to be very careful with our words.

Jephthah made a vow he couldn’t take back. And the cost? Unimaginable.

This week’s episode dives into the danger of overpromising and the seriousness of making a vow before the Lord. God always keeps His word — the question is, do we really mean ours?

When things fall apart—we’re quick to hand it over:
“God, please take this.”
But when things start going right?
We just as quickly take credit.

🚗 It’s like we want God to drive through the storms,
but jump into the front seat the moment the skies clear.

The truth?
You can’t pick and choose when God leads.
He’s either out front, or He’s not.

📖 Gideon got it.
He let God take the lead when it counted most—and gave Him the glory afterward, too.

In today’s episode, we’re exploring what it means to let God be in charge in both the battles and the victories.

Ever find yourself saying, “What are the chances?”
🚪 A door opens.
📞 Someone calls at just the right time.
💬 A conversation answers a prayer you didn’t even speak aloud.

When you’re walking the narrow path… these things don’t just happen.
They’re not accidents.
They’re assignments.

What we call “coincidences” are often just God at work—lining up the details, inviting us into something holy.

In today’s episode, I’m sharing how to recognize these moments not as flukes, but as God’s fingerprints—and your invitation to stand in awe of His design.

Good judgment isn’t something you’re born with.
It’s something you choose to grow.

📖 The Israelites—the very people God chose—are a living cautionary tale:
They struggled with peer pressure.
They gave in to fear.
They wavered with the winds of culture and bad decisions.

Sound familiar?

The truth is:
Without anchoring morality in God’s truth, we end up like them—
Emotionally immature, easily swayed, and repeating the same mistakes.

In today’s episode, I’m talking about how judgment is a muscle—
One we must intentionally exercise in ourselves and our children… before the culture trains it for us.

Did you grow up in a home with rules about swearing?
I sure did!
But here’s a question…
Was it really about the words themselves—
Or about the spirit behind them?

📖 Proverbs reminds us that our words have power—
Not just to offend, but to heal or to harm.

Harsh words can “dry the bones”…
💀 Leaving others in despair, hopelessness, and fear.
But words spoken with wisdom, kindness, and truth?
🌱 They bring healing, life, and joy.

In this episode, I’m unpacking what the Bible says about the heart behind what we speak—
And why it’s less about having a “swear jar,” and more about guarding our tongues to cultivate life.

How do you know you’ve built your life on sinking sand instead of solid rock?

📖 The Reubenites, Gadites, and half-tribe of Manasseh chose land outside the Promised Land—land that looked good… but wasn’t where God had led them.

And what happened?
Suddenly, they needed to build witnesses and monuments just to stay connected to Israel.
They were already scrambling to hold it together.

💡 Here’s the truth:
You know you’ve built on sinking sand when you’re constantly trying to shore up the symptoms of your decisions—
Patching cracks, managing consequences, and fighting to make your way work.

In today’s episode, I’m unpacking this story as a cautionary tale about stubbornness, pride, and the hard—but freeing—act of returning to God’s foundation.

Manasseh and Ephraim had plenty.
But instead of fully inhabiting the land they’d been given, they came to Joshua asking for more.

📖 Joshua’s response?
“If you’re really as numerous and strong as you say, go clear the land you already have.”

Meanwhile, Caleb and the daughters of Zelophehad asked humbly for what was promised—not more.

🌱 Here’s the truth:
We often want more from God—more opportunity, more blessing, more land…
But are we even using what He’s already given us?

In this episode, I’m reflecting on what it means to fully inhabit your assignment, honor what God has given, and do the hard work before asking for something new.

Israel was told to clear the land—every last bit.
But they didn’t.
Some enemies were too strong.
Some were “useful” as forced labor.
Some were spared out of what may have felt like mercy or logic.

Whatever the reason, the command wasn’t followed completely.
And that compromise came at a cost.

💭 How often do we do the same?

We obey God’s direction… partially.
We make adjustments to His commands out of fear, convenience, or pride—
and then wonder why we’re left with half the peace, half the healing, half the blessing.

In this episode, I’m digging into the cost of incomplete assignments, and how finishing what God asked—fully—leads to the full promise.

📖 “The sun stood still…”
That’s what the Bible says happened when Joshua prayed.
But how do we read that?

🧠 Was it poetic language?
🌍 Exaggeration?
✨ Or did it actually happen?

For those of us who seek God both in His Word and in the science of His creation, this is one of the most challenging moments in Scripture.

“Take off your shoes, you’re standing on holy ground.”
We’ve heard that line before—maybe it’s always sounded like a command for reverence.

But what if it’s more than that?

What if God wasn’t just demanding respect,
but inviting connection?

What if going barefoot on holy ground was about grounding—
📖 physically, spiritually—

If you knew destruction was coming…
Would you have the faith to stay?

Rahab did.

She believed in the God of Israel before she ever saw Him move.
🏹 She sheltered the spies.

But the army didn’t come the next day. Or the next.

God gave us ears to hear.
Eyes to see.
A heart to feel.

But He doesn’t force us to know Him.

That’s our choice.

📖 Scripture says He set before us life and prosperity… or death and adversity.
Not as punishment—
But as the natural result of what we choose to pursue.

🧠 Will we harden our hearts with human reasoning?
Or soften them with wonder, obedience, and trust?

Where do you place your faith?

💰 Is it in money?
🏛️ Government?
💊 Medicine?

God offers us a foundation—solid rock beneath our feet.
But too often, we choose shifting sand instead, thinking it looks safer, faster, smarter.

📖 Scripture makes this clear:
If we choose other gods, He will let us have them.
He’ll let us go to them when the storm comes…
And expect us to find our safety there.

That’s not abandonment—it’s justice.
Because God won’t compete with idols.

We know God calls us to love our neighbor
But does that mean we’re responsible for their health?
Their choices?
Their outcomes?

It’s a tricky line.

Some take on too much—neglecting their own calling to try and “save” others.
Others care so little for themselves, they’re not equipped to care for anyone else.

📖 God’s Word calls us to a middle ground:
Compassion without control.
Care without codependency.
Responsibility for ourselves first—so we’re strong enough to love others well.

In today’s episode, I’m exploring what Scripture says about community, stewardship, and staying in the lane God gave you.

As the Israelites prepared to enter the Promised Land, God made the choice clear:
Blessing or curse.
Not random punishment—just the natural result of whether they chose to follow Him or not.

📖 “Serve the Lord with joy and gladness…” and you’ll see life, fruitfulness, and peace.
Reject Him… and you'll start to feel it:
💔 Confusion
💤 Exhaustion
🍂 Withering health
⚖️ Constant striving

These aren’t abstract ideas.
They’re symptoms—indicators of whether we’re walking in God’s way or trying to do it on our own.

One where He does the leading…
And we stop exhausting ourselves trying to control every detail.

But instead, most of us live tangled in anxiety,
📦 Burdened by what-ifs, shoulds, and have-to’s—
All because we forget to live like sheep.

One of the clearest themes in Scripture—and in nature—is this:
🌱 Take care of your home first.

That might surprise some of us raised in the Church…
Where we were taught that “good Christians” should always put others first—
Even at the cost of our own families or personal well-being.

But that’s not God’s design.

📖 Over and over in the Bible, God tells His people:
🔹 Tend your home.
🔹 Provide for your family.
🔹 Build strong roots before reaching outward.

In Deuteronomy, Moses warned the Israelites:
⚠️ Stay away from spiritism.
⚠️ Do not worship the sun, moon, or other gods.
⚠️ Test every prophet against the truth of God.

But somewhere along the way, confusion crept in.
Today, many Christians fear any connection to nature-based healing—
As if all herbal medicine, energy, or rhythm automatically equals New Age.

🌿 But God never told us to stop using His creation.
He told us not to worship it.

In this episode, I’m clearing up the fear-based confusion around natural health practices—and calling us back to a biblical relationship with creation: one rooted in awe of the Creator, not imitation of pagan systems.

The Israelites never moved—never traveled, never went to war—without God's presence going first.

But once, they tried.
They went up into the land without Him
And were routed.

So when David says, “I keep the Lord always before me,”
He’s not being poetic.
He’s giving us a survival strategy.

In today’s world, we’re constantly told to “think globally.”
🌍 Worry about crises everywhere.
Spread your attention thin.
Feel responsible for people you’ll never meet.

But what if that’s not what God designed?

📖 In Deuteronomy 14 and 15, we see a different model—
One that’s hyper-local.
Care for your neighbor.
Feed the hungry in your gates.
Take care of your land and your people.

No back-breaking canal work, no hauling buckets from the Nile—

Sounds like a blessing, right?

But standing at the edge of their inheritance, the Israelites hesitated.

We’ve all heard it—or thought it:
🟠 “It must be safe… it’s on the shelf.”
🍭 “If neon-colored food was really harmful, someone would’ve stopped it.”
👀 “If God didn’t want me to do this, wouldn’t He stop me?”

But here’s the hard truth:
God doesn’t always strike people down in the parking lot for rebellion.
That doesn’t mean He’s not watching.

🎯 Sometimes, the consequence isn’t immediate wrath—it’s slow decay.
The physical fallout. The spiritual numbness. The confusion that comes from living like God isn’t paying attention.

Moses—the one who spoke with God face to face…
Who wrote the first five books of Scripture…
Who led a nation through the wilderness…

📖 And yet, in the end, he messed up.

The weight of leading a rebellious people wore him down.
And in a moment of pride, he disobeyed God… and missed the Promised Land.

💔 But here’s the hope:
Moses’ story didn’t end in failure.
He still belonged to God.
He still had a place in eternity.

In this episode, I’m reflecting on Moses—not as a model of perfection, but as a reminder that even faithful leaders are human… and that grace meets us in our weakness.

If everything in nature is good…
🌳 Why would Jesus curse a fig tree?

Most theologians say it’s a parable about spiritual fruit—
About the danger of looking righteous without living it.

But theologians aren’t plant scientists.

What if there’s more to this story?
What if Jesus’ curse also reveals something about how we interfere with nature’s design—
And how barren roots can teach us about our own?

In today’s episode, I’m digging deeper—into the biology of the fig, the symbolism of fruitfulness, and how this moment speaks to the state of our hearts and our soil.

“The first shall be last, and the last shall be first.”
I always thought that meant importance in the Kingdom of Heaven.

But what if it’s about timing?

💰 What if the rich man walks away sad not just because he didn’t want to give it all up—
…but because he knew he had too much to untangle in time?

Could it be that those who have the most—status, stuff, comfort—also have the longest way back to simple obedience?

In this episode, I’m unpacking Jesus’ warning to the wealthy… and asking what it really means to follow now, before the door closes.

Do you know the Parable of the Sower?
What if we took it literally?

🌱 What if your heart is soil?
Your body is soil.
Even your spirit is soil.

And if that’s true…
Are you cultivating the kind of life where God’s Word can actually grow?

In today’s episode, I’m digging deeper into this parable—connecting it to Genesis, biology, and the way we tend both our bodies and the land.
Because how we treat the soil—on the ground and in ourselves—says a lot about how ready we are to receive God’s truth.

Did you know that God gave specific instructions for how cities should be built?
Not just where—but how.
With intentional connection to the land… space for rest… even protection for the vulnerable.

🏙️ Before the Promised Land, cities were often marked by chaos, corruption, and spiritual decay.
But God's plan?
It was for places that supported mind, body, and spirit health.

In today’s episode, we’re exploring what Scripture says about how we live together—and why the shape of our communities still matters to God.

Imagine standing just minutes from receiving everything God promised…
But instead of stepping into it,
🐦 You settle for what’s in front of you.
Because it feels safer.
More certain.
Less risky.

That’s what the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and half of Manasseh did.
They stopped just short of the Promised Land.

And honestly? A lot of us do the same thing—without ever realizing what we missed.

In today’s episode, we’re talking about fear, settling, and the unseen cost of choosing comfort over calling.

Cool, right? The idea that women are seen as "less than" in the Bible, simply isn't true. They are different, but not less than. If I put myself in the sandals of the daughters of Zelophahad, I have to acknowledge the immense bravery it took to go before not only Moses, but before God, to state what they felt was right and true. Their hunger to have the same relationship with the land that was being offered to the men of Israel is something I benefit from today... and God's answer- of course! All humans are equal, regardless of their sex, in their access to a deep covenant with the land, just as it is equal to all to accept God's invitation to serve Him.

Plant scientists estimate that we understand about 1% of the chemicals that are found in the plant portion of our planet. This means that there are roughly 99% of plant chemicals (phytochemicals) that we cannot diagram, analyze, isolate or explain. The solution to this problem? Since current scientific analysis must begin with the premise that there is no creator God, when we reach the end of man's intellect we simply say "the other 99% must not do anything and is therefore not necessary for us to understand." It defies logic- and endangers our health... especially when you realize that we are largely isolating the chemicals we use to make pharmaceuticals out of plants. What could go wrong?!?!?

The thing is… God has a much longer view of things than we do. What a terrifying thing it would be if we could change God’s mind. God is dependable, constant, and He has the best in mind for each of us. Usually, His plan is way better than the one we thought of. It’s honestly pretty comforting that we can’t DO anything to sweet talk Him into doing things our way.

Where did the idea of "Mother Nature" or "Mother Earth" come from? Is there any support for the idea in the Bible, or is it a pagan notion? My answer- yes...and no. I believe there is evidence here to support an Old Testament awareness of "earth" as feminine. Can we appreciate the balance of male and female in creation without worshiping it AS a god.... that's the real question.

What’s your relationship with “the land”? Is it a sacred covenant and commission from your creator? In today’s world, the average relationship with “the land” is about your carbon footprint, or buying “green” products. All of these ideas about how to be in relationship truly just highlight how very far removed from the land we really are. I believe our relationship with the land is actually supposed to serve as a reminder of how to have a relationship with our creator- how do you think you’re doing?

I’m fascinated by the continuing rebellion of the Israelites in the very presence of God… almost every time, the consequences are depicted as a fire that consumes them. Is it possible that our cells are damaged when we sin? Could it be a sort of dissonance that is set up as our human nature fights with the perfection of God’s creation in our very tissues? Just something I’m pondering today….

It's humbling when you realize that humans aren't NEEDED. God created all of nature and it was good... without man. It is designed to be fully self-sustaining- and healing- all on its own. We were an addition. Icing on the cake so to speak. God had created something so perfectly intelligent, systems within systems that were designed to perfectly glorify Him... and then He thought of adding in man. We demonstrate our obedience by recognizing Him in His creation and in stewarding it by His instructions... but if you watch even something as simple as how weed seeds sprout in disturbed soil... you will quickly understand our role is not to control and dominate. Instead, we should be taking the time to watch, learn and marvel... and give praise for how much He provides for us.

Solomon develops a case for a deeper examination of wisdom and understanding in Proverbs. His contention is that our wisdom must be rooted in knowledge that begins in a fear of our God. Unpacking what that means, he speaks as to his son and here in this passage brings up the possibility of being tempted to stray from his marriage. Wisdom that is rooted in understanding God's commandments, keeping our word and following His direction rather than being guided by the wisdom that arises from within ourselves keeps us focused on our marriage vows- and that leads to health, and life abundant.

We aren't so different from the Israelites. It's easy to see them as whiny and ungrateful... sick of eating manna and wishing they were back in slavery in Egypt where they had a variety of food to eat. BUT THEN- do you remember last night? When you were too tired to make a real food dinner from the food God provides us... and you decided to grab fast food instead? Imitation creation food is slavery... to the world... to big food and pharma. While our bodies are able to make occasional compromises, it is difficult to get out of these habits and stay on the road to health. This is by design... fake food is convenient and ready when we are most weak. Turns out we have more in common with those Ancient Israelites than we thought.

People love to throw around the expression "do as I say, not as a I do". It may be a truism about human behavior, but it is nothing to laugh about. The fundamental truth that our leaders need to live the way they suggest we live- but don't- is at the bottom of problems in relationships from marriage, to family, to jobs... even to our government. It's something we learned the importance of while playing Simon Says as children... and it's here in these chapters in Numbers.

Eating from the Tree of Knowledge in the Garden of Eden brought death. Here in Proverbs Solomon is discussing the different aspects of knowledge, wisdom, and understanding. The path to healing starts with the fear of God and leads through the development of knowledge, wisdom and then understanding. It is a stark contrast to the path to death and disease which begins in the search for knowledge for the sake of celebrating and proving man's superior intellect.

I've spend a lot of years working to take charge of my health... I didn't think about the fact that I was working to step it up in my relationship with God at the same time... but I have. Because we must choose to live "set apart" to truly walk God's narrow, healthy path, I am understanding the depth of what it was to take the Nazarite vow... in a time when a relationship with God was already taken care of by SOMEONE ELSE! How amazing is it that there was a provision for folks who were strongly convicted to take it on for themselves? How amazing is it that we can still do this today?

Does the assignment of the camp sites around the tabernacle have any message for us today in 2025? Yes! I think the more we comb through clear and detailed instruction given from God to Moses, the more it is clear that God is about balance, clarity, design and order. Christians often miss out on important truths about nature because they are repelled by ideas that seem new-agey. At the very least, language surrounding the idea that "the weeds that grow close to us, or are found in our area in the most abundance have grown there because we need them" is often lost in the idea of plant devas and supernatural gaia posturing. There is truth here- both Biblical and scientific if we dig a bit- and it is part of the design of how God provides for us.

How many times do you do things like disrespect your body (eat imitation creation), or ignore some of His commandments and think "it's such a minor issue... God has plenty of other things to do... I wasn't struck by lightening immediately so He must not care- or must not see"? The truth is that even good people make compromises in their walk when they think God isn't looking. He turns His face from us when we are disobedient... leaving those folks vulnerable to doing even more wickedness and digging the hole for themselves a bit deeper- perhaps even announcing "there is no God". We cannot make compromises in our walk because while He might turn away temporarily... His judgement is eternal. It's much better for us in the long run to be steadily doing God's will even when we don't think He notices.

Have you ever felt complete and utter despair? That experience is entirely determined by what you believe about God. Feeling despair to the point that David is in these passages... crying yourself to sleep at night because of how wretched you feel.. is a different place to stand when you believe God has set you apart as holy and you have the special privilege not only to ask for help, but to get an answer! I want to expand on my ideas behind "clean and unclean" and the necessity to be strong, whole and grounded in our health. The idea of applying the "ides" to our plants to help them fight predators and disease is based on an assumption that coming under attack is just a condition of being in nature. It's not true- in fact, in almost every case the weakened or compromised plants are the ones that are attacked. The solution, then, is not to dump on a chemical, but to strengthen weaknesses. This applies to our bodies as well... and perhaps you'll agree, it applies to what we learn in Leviticus about why it is important to be be whole before standing in front of the dangerous, awesome presence of God.

What does clean really mean when it comes to God? We're told "cleanliness is next to Godliness" and that has been used as a weapon to shame those who are not clean either in their clothes, their body, their habits or yes- their soul. Have you ever thought about the Bible as a cohesive book? I didn't. It's not what I was taught growing up... I always had the idea that it was a hodgepodge of different writers who were inspired at different times to put down important, and unrelated, moral stories that God wanted us to hear. But what if we accept that the Bible is one cohesive storyline written by only one author... using a number of ghost writers? Couldn't we then say that, like other books, there is likely a plot line, main characters, and... a main idea? Today I'm making the case for a main idea- a theme that God ensures rings throughout all the stories and all the writers... see if you agree.

How do unintended consequences occur? God's plan for our lives is perfect because He can see farther than we can.. and He can see around the corners we don't see. When we try to add to His plan... or change it in some way because we're looking with our own eyes- that's when unintended consequences happen. Even well-intentioned we can create disasters. What if we simply went limp and floated in the current of God's will and allowed His plan to unfold? Isn't that the faster path to the good that He intends for us? Maybe this is a strange thing to ponder here at the retelling of Jesus' death on the cross, but I feel the message so keenly and am determined to keep Jesus' example in mind for my life.

Have you spent much time thinking about what makes you special? Every single one of us is here for a reason... just like every single part of nature has a role to play, every single blade of grass, every single weed. You have a God given talent and purpose that He has invested His resources into. Are you jumping out of bed ready to go do what only you can do every day? What's holding you back? If your energy is low, or you are in pain... these things draw focus and energy away from your purpose. I'm a big crusader to put our understanding of nature back together... and stop taking everything apart to look at the little parts. You know... the whole "missing the forest for the trees" idea? It applies to more than just trees. Our current understanding of science asks us to overlook system's thinking- our medical system is a case in point! We focus so hard on one part and will it to make sense out of the system from which it came.

The truth is... we can't do this kind of analysis with our health, nature, farming... OR God's word.

Oprah didn't invent the idea of self-love, I believe it's Biblical. God gives us simple instructions. He loves us so much that He tells us EXACTLY how to be successful, happy, confident and holistically healthy. He also tells us quite plainly that the most loving thing we can do for ourselves and our community is to simply follow His commandments. The path the self-love is pretty simply... straight through the heart of loving God with everything we have...

Is your perspective on weeds informed by God or man? Today, using the parable of the wheat and the tares, I'd like to examine the idea that perhaps we've been fooled with man's dogma surrounding God's actual instruction by about the plants in creation.... to our downfall. The more we "fight the good fight" against God's creation- the sicker we become.

Have you ever noticed that Jesus is selective in those people He heals during His time on earth? He asks most of them a question first- it seems to me as if He cannot help but heal... but He is aware that there is a requirement on the part of humanity that must be met before we can benefit. Complete and all encompassing faith, coupled with the ability to really SEE Him and who He is is the price of admission for true healing- I think it might be easier said than done for many, we have so many stumbling blocks...

Jesus fasted... but he didn't need to get rid of anything impure. He fasted to rid Himself of anything in His flesh that separated Him from His father. Then He intentionally felt what you and I feel when we are tempted by the things of this world that separate us from OUR father... to fully have compassion for us... to fully carry the weight of what it is to choose in our flesh to walk away from the LIFE that is offered to us. WOW! God gets it- our "why" for giving in to the current temptations, but that doesn't mean we won't feel the consequences of those willful choices... there is a connection here to how we build our "house" or rather, our body. There are consequences to building our bodies on a foundation of sand.

Is God your identity? Can people see Him shining through you?

It's a convicting question. How lucky were the Israelites to travel around with a physical presence of God... yet they still took Him for granted and couldn't give Him credit for their very existence... couldn't follow His rules... I can certainly identify and feel empathy for the Israelites, but I wonder if I can learn from them and do better?

Do you ever feel like you repeat yourself a lot? If you're a mom, it feels like you should have a few numbered recordings of the things you repeat the most so you can just play them as needed. I find it difficult to master my patience and repeat myself kindly and in love... but God does it... all the time.

Here in Exodus God not only repeats Himself, but he remakes the 10 commandments when the first set gets broken. Thank goodness He is willing to repeat Himself- I know I would never get the lesson and miss out on a lot of blessing otherwise.

Have you ever said "God put you on my heart today"? It's actually a kind of curious expression- but we all instantly know what it means when it's said. Ever thought about what it really means, or where it came from?

An awareness of the importance of the heart space is throughout most ancient civilizations and Christianity is no different. Perhaps we can start to trace an understanding of "on my heart" here in Exodus as God lays out how to dress His high priest.

Can we as humans control nature?

Much of what is wrong in our current society says we can and we should... medical science seeks to control birth, death and everything in between. Our dietary recommendations are about control over nature... we hear almost daily about man's control over our environment. It's a lot to carry! Was that God's original intention for us- or is it against his design?

Did you know that God made promises to His people regarding health, fertility and fullness of life? I never heard about it...I wonder why? It's a promise "IF"... in other words, we have to do our part to enjoy the blessing.

How long have Christians been accepting ill health, assuming it is the consequence of living in a fallen world- without taking personal responsibility for their side of this particular covenant? Can we get back to living this promise, or is it lost to us?

Unleavened bread from the perspective of thousands of years looks like merely the consequence of leaving in a hurry. Exodus 12:39 states that no one had a chance to prepare their bread before running, so it would have been all they had to eat- even without God saying they should not eat any leavening! Why? Why does he make a point of it? I think our relationship with natural learning (sourdough) and bread goes deeper than we typically think...

Did you know that God's plan doesn't usually involve trying to do it all by yourself? Moses expected to be a failure with Pharaoh and he wasn't wrong... turns out that there was another heart God was working to touch- and Moses never saw it coming! Can you be HAPPY as a slave? Yes... you can. Biblically, being enslaved means that someone else is responsible for you. We have long focused on the part of this where the products of your labor are owned by a "master", but in the Bible and throughout much of history, slavery was actually a willful condition that you placed yourself into for survival.

Is there any entity or person in your life that you have made responsible for you? Do you depend on a governmental agency to vet all the food you eat- and accept their benevolence without question? Have you given over your bodily autonomy to a doctor- expecting them to make decisions and tell you what to do- accepting their orders without question?

Modern day slavery is a lot more like Biblical slavery... only most of our population are willingly giving ownership of themselves over to evil entities that will not care for you in exchange for the benefit they derive from you.

Being enslaved to God= health.... enslavement by anything else= death.

Have you ever seen a miracle happen right in front of you, but then rationalize it away? We chalk it up to an active imagination, or tell ourselves that what we saw was some sort of trick to the eye or mind because $cience says it's not possible.

Every time we choose to replace our awe over the daily miracles God is doing all around us, we are hardening our heart. It is a choice to take God's work for granted. God asks us to approach him with the heart of a child... ever wonder what that really means? Think about how children are in constant wonder over the amazing God filled world they see... and haven't learned to discount their reality in favor of man's explanation.

What do a healing crisis and the exodus have in common? It's exactly where my mind went as I read about Pharaoh doubling down on the Israelites workload in the face of being asked to let them go.

There's an old adage that "it's going to get a lot worse before it gets better"... and it's universally true. Freeing the body from bondage of any kind often requires a healing crisis where things get worse. You've got to keep walking through the bad patch with your eyes fixed on God's promises... if you don't, you'll just stay stuck.

Joseph has a plan to keep his family away from the illness and influence of Egyptian culture. At the time Israel moves to Egypt, the people there are heavily urban or intensive agriculture focused. They don't place much value on open grasslands.. or shepherds. God's people are called to be separate, a culture apart.

I think we need to ponder what physical separation from convenience, fast food, electronics and the city culture of human group thinking would mean in our lives in terms of our physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health. Joseph clearly felt it was important even in the time of Egypt- how much more so is it now?

Do you hold on to things too tightly? Do you carry the belief that somehow it is your responsibility to hold things together, or save someone or something... and the only way to do that is to hold on?

I can't say that I would have had the courage to let go of my son like Moses' mom did... I think it's possible I might have decided that my idea of how to save him was the only way. The natural inclination here would be to hold on to him - and that would have been his death, and probably hers.

What are you holding on to? What could you let go and give up to God's plan? Jochebed was hugely rewarded when she let her faith overrule her fear... what an amazing example to follow!

Plants make all kinds of adaptations to their environment- without a doubt. Occasionally though, a plant's unique ability to cooperate in its environment just might be less about survival of the fittest and more about a clever design that was put in place at the very beginning... the story of bloodroot is strangely at the heart of this struggle between the current dogma of science and an awareness of a Creator God as evidenced in the design of nature... what do you think?

Are you learning your lessons? It's often said that God gives us opportunities to learn our lessons multiple times in multiple ways... that he will continue to give us our lessons until we ultimately learn them. God is a loving parent- wanting the best for us... wanting the best blessings He has available to us. Learning our lessons requires humility and repentance. Judah in Egypt is a beautiful illustration of how we gain access to all the blessings God wants for us to experience when we learn our lessons.

Joseph and his multi-colored coat- it's a popular musical for good reason... it's a great story! I'm personally seeing a different angle on it as I read it this time through. So much is wrong in our world... we can get caught up in it. Doom scrolling is a thing- feeding on the negative, the dysfunctional. It's tempting to use all the evil around us as an excuse, a reason to feel like a victim. But there's another world all around us, existing at the exact same time as the evil- it's a perspective shift... and one that is a conscious choice of drawing near. Which world are you focused on?

Is it possible for a name to set the course of a life? If not, then why are there so many baby name books and websites out there? It's not just because we want to have the coolest name for our child... we want their name to "mean" something... to set the tone of their lives and set them up for the best of everything.

God is already telling us in many ways even just in the early parts of the first book of the Bible that there is power in pronouncing a name over someone's lives. What are you allowing to be pronounced over your life in the name of health? Who are you allowing to do that pronouncing.

If there is power in the naming... perhaps we should be a bit more careful...

Sibling rivalry leads us to some sinful places because of hurt, jealousy and loneliness. When you add in the emotional anguish of infertility it must be unbearable. Rachel and Leah struggle against their own bodies and against each other, while also vying for the love of the same man... it's a strain on their relationship as sisters to say the least.

Did you know that we have a sort of auto-pilot when it comes to our food and our behaviors? If we don't think about it at all, we are very likely to repeat what we saw rather than something new. If we saw a disfunctional family, abuse, disrespect, or even poor eating habits and lack of self-care, we are kinda doomed to repeat it unless we are aware enough to take control of our own life and choose to go a different route.

Check out how this plays out in the lives of Isaac and Rebekah and their boys Esau and Jacob!

When I was diagnosed as infertile- I believed that God could heal me... but I figured he could use some help right? He didn't want me to just sit and listen for direction- he needed me out there trying as many of the great options in His beautiful world as I could... except He didn't. My belief wasn't enough- it needed to be followed up with listening and patience. Sarai made the same mistake and it created bad blood between two powerful families to this day. God's way is always best- we can see it clearly when we're listening and looking for the way that clearly follows His truth... and we've got to be patient enough to wait for the miracle.

Are we aware of the land's carrying capacity? Do we overtax it and call it environmentalism by stacking ourselves into cities? Years ago the farmer's market movement began... people instinctively felt a need to make a connection back to their food. That need expressed itself in a need to "know" or "have a relationship" with their farmer... but it was really just a need to reconnect to the land where their food was coming from. This goes much deeper than just a desire to understand the origin story of our strawberry... it is a relationship that is part of our design and that of creation around us. Lot and Abram split up because they were exeriencing such fertility that the land could not support them anymore. They split for the sake of the land- and a desire to not overstretch its capacity to support them.

My guest is Nicole Erwin, Bible whiz and great friend of mine. We discuss the new age health concept of "manifestation" in light of Biblical principles. Is it sound?

In this series we will explore some of what I believe to be co-opted Biblical truths. When presented in mainstream, New Age language, these ideas get wrapped in just enough of a lie that they become spiritually repellant.

Christians often view these repackaged truths as suspect and reject both the lie AND the truth- throwing the baby out with the bathwater so to speak. If we retrieve the co-opted truth and reframe it back under Biblical principle where it belongs - we may find that God is offering us many more tools than we realized for self and family health.  Let's see....

Have you had that moment? That moment that changes your life completely. Just before, you were content within all the systems of mainstream culture... and the next, you are stepping into a new way of living because your life has been so altered. You cannot unknow the things you now know. You are now navigating a new normal in a parallel culture?

I've had that moment. I remember it clearly. It is why I am who I am today. Here's the story.
