In the age of abundant experts and gurus, we take the subversive stance that you are actually the only expert you need for your own life. By looking closer at your own life experiences - both the ones that felt good and the array of challenges you had, you can harvest all the wisdom and medicine you need to guide your unique life and offer your unique gifts and wisdom to the world. We have conversations with ordinary people to look closer at how everyday experiences of living life have shaped us and taught us profound lessons. Often we don't think much of our choices and experiences, but in reality, they all have a profound meaning. Instead of just moving from one thing to the next, we can slow down and pause to integrate the initiations that life has already provided, to become even more whole, balanced, and able to bring the medicine of our life, the medicine we've already been given, into the world.
In this solo episode, Chuck explores a phrase one of his mentors used to use, “It’s All About Relationship.” Avoiding the common themes about the qualities of relationships and advice about how to do relationships or labels of healthy or unhealthy relationships, Chuck hopes to expand our perspective on what a relationship is and what it contains and can reveal to us. With an invitation to look at all the different relationships we have with people, systems, nature, ourselves, our history and experiences, parts of us, and our thoughts and emotions in general or specific (ie - how we relate to sadness, joy, anger or specific thoughts that we accept and others we may reject) and more. Rather than looking at how to shape a relationship or even worse, a person into being how we want it to be, what if we actually look at ourselves and how we relate to everything and everyone inside and outside of us? Are your relationships all similar or do you have a lot of different experiences in relationship? Where do your relational patterns come from? We also start to look at the differences in short-term vs long-term relationships and how they reveal different things. This is the first exploration into relationship itself on this podcast and due to the vast nature of the topic, it is incomplete and will likely be explored further in the future. But there is still plenty here to start to expand your perspective on all that your relationships are holding for you.

In the second part of this real-life mythological epic story, Katrina and Chuck talk about her unintentional rites of passage which started through travel in Bali and India as a young adult resulting in a sexual assault, a mental health crisis, physical health problems, and other challenges. All of which led her to a deep connection with nature where she guides others. In the first part of the conversation, Katrina tells her story, then we unpack it and start to look at it from a symbolic and mythological perspective in this second part. Be advised this episode has references to sexual assault and other difficult topics.
Katrina Nilsson-Gorman, is a Nature Mystic, Archetypal Explorer, Author and a Soulful Mentor. Her clients have called her "a medicine woman who embodies life-times of deep self-cultivation work." She has a passion for connection—deep connection to the transpersonal realm, connection to village and connection to land. Possessing a deep interest in personal development and self-discovery from a young age, Katrina has facilitated various circles and women's support groups for nearly a decade. These include working for the Soltura Foundation, online women's circles and writer’s groups. Additionally, she has 20 years of experience with various divinatory arts including Ancient Hellenistic Astrology, Tarot, Runes, and Iching.
Although she holds a Bachelors Degree in Music and English, and several certifications including Nature and Forest Therapy and various energetic healing modalities, Katrina would like to emphasize that her greatest degree has come from life—the quiet observation of nature, the people she has met and diving deep into its endless explorations both on internal and external levels. Having traversed the globe in search of interesting and successful healing modalities, she spent a considerable time in Bali, Indonesia and Tiruvanamalai, India studying various forms of energy work. From there, she began the path to realizing she was a full-body medium and effective vehicle for energy, and translating archetypes into meaningful messages for clients. She has an unabashed adoration for nature and is living proof that soulful connection with the natural world can lead to greater health and fulfillment.

In this second part of the conversation, Laura and Chuck have a fun, engaging conversation exploring life and how her life and career “fell apart” at one point, but led her to discover the forces that have directed Laura to engage more with her art to make award-winning archetypal, mythological, and fairy tale inspired films that represent well how these patterns show up in our modern lives. We touch on some of the forces we experience in life including internal poverty, invisibility, community, belonging, and aloneness.
Laura was a graduate student in clinical psychology but eventually switched majors and earned her M.A in theatre. In 2019 Laura began making stop-motion films focused on fairy tales. Now Laura is an award-winning stop-motion filmmaker and educator. Laura's focus is on animating fairy tales and mythic stories for personal and collective transformation. She is inspired by the work of Joseph Campbell, Carl Jung, and Michael Meade. Laura's films are made in her basement in Chicago. Her screening events are filled with heart and questions for the soul.

In this second part of the conversation, Godwin and Chuck diver further into a rich conversation about the riches he has from growing up in a time of famine in Ghana. We cover a lot of ground, literally and metaphorically, discussing his experiences in Africa, Europe, and the United States and how he has been able to adapt and thrive in many different cultures, all the while never losing sight of who he is, what his life is about, and what he has to offer the world. We talk about how he has learned to observe people and patterns deeply, and he shares his thoughts on health and challenges in our lives.

My Life is the Medicine is a podcast hosted by Chuck Hancock. Chuck sits down to have conversations with ordinary people to look at how everyday life has provided numerous lessons and initiations already that we sometimes overlook. In our age of abundant information, it is easy to get lost in “self-help” books, and social media “experts,” or continue to seek the “one” therapist, coach, healer, retreat, training, etc… seeking more, new, bigger, or better experiences ignoring what is already available to you right here, right now. The wisdom of your own experience from your own life. Drawn out by engaging in a relational dialog.
In the age of abundant experts and gurus, we take the subversive stance that you are actually the only expert you need for your own life. By looking closer at your own life experiences – both the ones that felt good and the array of challenges you had, you can harvest all the wisdom and medicine you need to guide your unique life and offer your unique gifts and wisdom to the world. In the second part of the conversation, Mandy and Chuck continue exploring the vast terrain, tension, and challenge between western-oriented and traditional nature-based philosophies, Kronos (linear/quantitative) and Kairos (soul/spirit/qualitative) time, meaning-making, story creation, paying for healing work, masculine patriarchal goal/objective-oriented work versus really listening and following what's being called for from someone's soul and life journey, being honest about not knowing and not guaranteeing an outcome for clients, ritual, ceremony, sweat lodge, relationship to ancestors, tending plants, and how all of this informs the ecosystems of our lives. Mandy shares from her experience with significant trauma and how a long road of ceremony, coaching, and therapy has led her to pursue and share a wealth of wisdom for our world. This is the second part of the conversation. Be sure to catch the first part first so you don't miss out on any of this rich medicine!
Mandy is a ritual artist, medicine maker, nature-based mentor and guide. She’s a farmer, sister, daughter, teacher, storyteller and perpetual student. She’s a seeker, a lover of life, a dancer and a ceremonialist. Born on the front range of Colorado (on the lands of the Arapaho, Cheyenne and Ute peoples), she is deeply connected to the mountains and the wild places, and when not tending her garden might be found foraging food, wildcrafting medicines or climbing mountains. She’s also the founder of Old Ways Wisdom—a place to bridge the gap of disconnect in these wild times by rekindling the old ways and fostering relationship with the land, our bodies, and the ancient wisdom in our bones through deep story work and ancestral skills. Her own lived experience of surviving trauma has led her down a path of recognizing the critical layer of emotional and spiritual recovery from the challenging experiences life can bring us, and has led her deep into her own apprenticeship with the mystery of sacred initiation. Mandy is in service to the remembrance of our wild selves; to a partnership between nature, creativity and soul; and to the wisdom carried in our bones waking us up to what is most important in our lives. This is the second part of a wide-ranging conversation. Tim and Chuck discuss the different cultures of faith, academics, societies, race, and more as well as the "culture wars" that seem to be happening within and between them. Through Tim's experiences with faith, inquiry, direct experience, and following the questions emerging from his own life, we discuss how his desire to understand life, be of service, and not settle for the quick easy answers has led him to many experiences around the world. We touch on transcendent experiences which led Tim to pursue scientific research into meditation and altered states and the difficulty and suffering he and many have found in these states. I can't even begin to touch on the depth of topics and questions we question but a few more teasers include holding curiosity and not knowing vs falling into stagnation or grandiosity, psychedelics, holding both positive and negative views of transcendent experiences, the complexity of inter-cultural relationships, our history, future, and more! This is the second part of a conversation you don't want to miss. Back up to part one if you haven't listened yet!
Tim is a psychology researcher in Melbourne, Australia. He is a member of the Baha'i Faith (www.bahai.org), which teaches the independent investigation of truth. In his free time Tim thinks about how everything is connected in an amazing web of interdependence, plays volleyball, drums/dances, talks to people and wonders why they are all getting so many tattoos, reads, and scopes out good coffee and food.

In Part two of the conversation, Devon and Chuck continue to discuss the long road of following your own path from childhood, through adolescence, into adulthood. As we explore Devon's story, we touch on nature-based practices, 10 years of integration of a powerful vision quest ceremony, learning to trust yourself, breaking away from what people want/need you to be and tell you that you are good at, the effect of a difficult childhood experience, and relationships with men and masculinity. BE SURE TO LISTEN TO PART 1 FIRST!
Devon Brady has his home in the Upper Hudson Valley, New York on the native lands of the Lenape (New Paltz, NY). He has learned to walk his own path in life having been on a life-long search for meaning, connection, authenticity, and wholeness. He has held many jobs and plays many roles in life including therapist, chef, mechanic, carpenter, sauna-builder, skateboarder, uncle, partner, embodied-arts practitioner (Aikido, Yoga, Climbing), outdoor mindfulness and nature based practitioner-facilitator (Sweatlodge, Vision Quest, sit spot, hiking, backpacking). His early life experiences growing up in a single mother household with an alcoholic father and engaging in his own self-initiatory experiences through substance use led him to a deep place of seeking solitude and reconnection with himself and God / life through the help of psychotherapy, mindfulness practices, and eventually engaging in a Vision Fast to support stepping into spontaneity, adulthood and responsibility where he decided to use his unique life perspective to connect with others and help them find similar healing and direction from within themselves. Devon is currently developing his own private practice in the Hudson Valley and considering a variety of modalities to include in his practice based on his various life experiences and influences listed above. More can be found about Devon and his practice at Devon Brady, MHC.

Happy New Year! It's the beginning! Again! Each year, each day, each life, we begin. And beginnings matter. How are you beginning this year? What is your origin story? Of this year? Of your life? How does it drive you in positive or negative ways? Does our past history really matter?
In this first episode of the year, Chuck reveals more of his origin story, and how it may be related to all of our origin stories through the archetype of the orphan. Chuck shares some of his own journey through healing in therapy and ceremony, seeking wisdom and knowledge, and confronting some of the traits that developed unconsciously in him from his origins as an orphan, growing up as a male in a conservative home in the conservative south, in suburban industrialized consumer-oriented environments and how his experiences with indigenous people and depth psychology helped him recognize these patterns in himself and in our culture.

In this final episode for the year, Chuck honors this winter solstice and new year transitional time with reflections on stopping and listening. He explores how difficult it can be to stop our habitual patterns and the momentum they hold, even patterns of depression which may look like stopping but really isn't. He shares about stopping habitual ways of engaging in relationships, habitual ways of setting new years intentions and resolutions, and the wars and battles internally and externally that make it hard to stop. He also discusses a recent example from one of the groups where we regularly practice listening to what is arising rather than going with habitual ways of being, and how a grief ritual spontaneously arose which is actually a perfectly timed ritual for this time of year. And how it takes courage and support to stop and feel grief.
Thanks for listening to this first year of My Life is the Medicine. We hope to continue sharing in the new year if it continues to feel like a life-giving use of time and resources.

In this second part of the conversation, Alex and Chuck continue to talk about big life changes resulting in major transformation and integration of various polarities. Alex’s journey so far has had many different forms including a former career in engineering, competitive rugby, and turning physical and emotional injury into healing as a bodyworker and somatic therapist. Our conversation covers many significant changes in life through changes in career, culture, bioregion, parenting through divorce, masculine and feminine orientations, relationship to the unknown, relational responsibility, relational intelligence, and staying grounded in the midst of big change following your own path. Through our conversation, we discuss how no life experience is bad and even drives that might have been misguided often lead to valuable life lessons and hard-earned wisdom. Be sure to listen to part 1 first if you haven't already!
Alex Willen is an east coast native turned resident of Fort Collins, an engineer turned therapist, and a competitive athlete turned functional movement practitioner. Alex's interests and abilities in supporting others began at an early age and continued throughout his life. Alex operates a private practice in Fort Collins and Boulder offering somatic disciplines including a mindfulness-based body-centered counseling model called Hakomi, Anatomy Trains Structural Integration bodywork which is similar to Rolfing, and complementary offerings in consciousness, change management, goal setting, experience integration, and more. When not working with clients, Alex can be found playing with his daughter Emmberlyn and son Maxwell, exploring Colorado, South Dakota, and the surrounding area, getting into nature, partaking in community, studying the mind and body, and investing in his own wellness and healing. In this episode, Chuck reflects on a recent trip with his daughter to New York City. The polarities of diversity and sameness are explored in self, relationships, products, therapy/coaching, and more. When we want things to be the same as how other people have it, we miss out on the possibility of what is unique about this experience. He also talks about how consumer culture and expectations are a part of almost every relationship these days and we are blind to them because it is how most of us operate in this country. Can we hold the both/and of needing to have an exchange of energy and reasonable expectation that we will get what we need, without being attached to getting what we want, and it needing to be a certain way?
Here is a link to the poem that is shared - "The Lovers."

In this episode, we continue with the 3rd and final part (of 3 parts) with Chuck’s partner Kelly, and we have a raw and vulnerable conversation modeling the core of what this podcast is about - using our own lives and our own relationship as the fertile ground of wisdom and medicine. It feels like we both went deep and yet still barely scratched the surface of our 25 shared years together in this 2-hour conversation split over 3 episodes. We touch on the origin story of our relationship, allowing it to be what it is and how each of our lives and our relationship have evolved through challenges and celebrations. Some of the big topics include grief, disordered eating, women’s bodies and women’s health, partnered relationship challenges, adoption/attachment, misguided attempts at personal growth and relationship communication and transforming those wounds and challenges into gifts. Be sure you listen to the first and second episode with Kelly first to not miss out on the origins of it all!

Kelly's Episode Highlights:
Episode 1: Unconscious origins of our relationship, Grief, Kelly’s dad’s death
Episode 2: Female body health - inhabiting your own body, not the story of what your body should be, health and wellness born from disordered eating, more grief, parenting
Episode 3: Summarizing the conversation and looking closer at some of the dysfunctional relationship patterns fueled by our individual struggles that created the opportunity for individual and relationship growth. Reflecting on the unwanted life experiences and lessons that have brought such wisdom, joy, and gratitude.
This poem by David Whyte summarizes nicely:
Those who will not slip beneath
the still surface on the well of grief,
turning down through its black water
to the place we cannot breathe,
will never know the source from which we drink,
the secret water, cold and clear,
nor find in the darkness glimmering,
the small round coins,
thrown by those who wished for something else.
