Welcome to our uniquely South African circus family. A social and professional circus that is filled with hope, promise, daring dreams, and extraordinary talent. Come and dream with us… Lindi Tshabangu, connected with Brent van Rensburg, co-founder of Zip Zap Circus to find out more about this extra-ordinary NPO that are creating global stars.

Zip Zap was born 30 years ago from a simple dream, a trapeze bar in a tree, a costume box and a rusty car. Established by South African born Brent van Rensburg and his French wife, Laurence Estève, their dream was to use the circus as a tool to bridge socio-economic gaps and to inspire and empower young people to build a new culture of peaceful co-existence in South Africa, inspired by the late Nelson Mandela.

As the Zip Zap story was founded on an initial love story between the two co-founders, so it continues to unfold as one. The love can be felt in every corner of this extraordinary social circus. It is felt on stage, on the training floor, throughout ten programmes and between every beneficiary, alumni, staff, international intern, board member and show audiences. Once you join the Zip Zap family, you are embraced by a sense of belonging, that lasts a lifetime.

Dealing with loss and grief is something all people at some stage have gone through. Have you ever wondered what the impact loss or death has on our children?

Lindi Tshabangu, host of Word of Mouth, connects with Melini Moses, who together with her husband, lead a church in Johannesburg, South Africa. She is an award winning Reporter and News Editor at the South African Broadcasting Corporation. Her past few years as a Pastor’s wife and the mother of two precious PK’s (Pastor’s kids) has been both a great challenge and an amazing blessing. Most of all, its opened her eyes to what Pastor’s families have to sacrifice every single day, the limitless love they need to have for others and the constant pressure they face trying to balance family life, church demands and for many, full time jobs.

Here are ten practical steps you can take to help your children through their grief : * Encourage conversation about their loved one who has passed. Let them share with you their favourite memories, from a trip to the beach to a chocolate waffles. * Children need concrete ways in which to express their emotions. Help them plant a memorial garden or write messages on stones that can be placed in a pot in the garden. * Acknowledge their moments of grief. Hold them and say “It’s OK baby, we all miss Pa.” Stay in the moment. Encourage them, letting them know they are loved. Answer their questions as best as you can. Stay age appropriate. Remember, it’s OK for them to see you crying. It makes them feel safe, knowing you are all experiencing this together. However, if you notice that it’s affecting them, find a space away from them if you need some time alone to grieve. * Stick to a routine. Children find great comfort in routine and structure. Try to stick to the routine they are used to as much as possible. From breakfast to bedtime, they will feel more in control of themselves, when they know what to expect. * Create a space, inside or outside your home, where your children can go if they want to talk to their loved one. You could have some pictures there, and an item that reminds them of the person eg. a toy, or a pack of cards. * Help them to make a scrap book or a memory box for their loved one. Print out pictures and give them stickers to personalise it. * Allow them to wear an item of their loved ones clothing. A pair of socks, or a T-shirt, may help them feel closer to them. A memory teddy bear would also be amazing. * If your child is little, buy him or her a bottle of bubbles. Allow them to blow bubbles into the sky to let their loved ones know that they are thinking of them. * Keep a close eye on your child’s behaviour. Are they more anxious? Are they clock-watching? Are they biting their nails? Are they clingy or agitated? Are they having difficulty sleeping? Are they constantly worried about where you are and if you are OK? Are they concentrating at school? If you notice any changes, please speak to a professional so you can put further steps in place to assist them. * Take care of Yourself. You may find yourself plunging into work or battling to keep your life together. Grief is complicated. It’s life-altering and each one of us deals with it so differently. If you need to see a counsellor, please do so. The more emotionally healthy you are, the safer your children will feel.

As parents, we can’t protect our children from the pain of loss, but we can help them get through it. By encouraging them to express their feelings in a healthy way, we can help them develop valuable coping skills, which will be beneficial to them both now and in the future. CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation SA Flip Flop Day 2022 – Friday, 18th of February - Have a heart and wear a sole!

Childhood cancer is a frightening reality that many families across South Africa have to deal with daily. South African families face the most challenging battle they will ever have to encounter - alongside the little warriors fighting on the Frontline. But luckily, these brave children and teenagers, along with their families, never have to stand alone.

Flippie is back for CHOC’s Flip Flop Day 2022

Flippie! South Africa’s favourite and most well-loved CHOC SOLE-dier. Flippie a flip-flop with a wholehearted passion for compassion. He’s stepped up to lead the movement to get every South African – young, old, corporate, casual, from the seaside to the city – to have a heart and wear a sole! All he wants us to do, quite literally, is to kick off our shoes for a day and slip on a pair of flip flops in support of the brave children and teenagers at CHOC. He is determined to get every one of us to set our 10 toes free, and walk beside our little fighters in solidarity against a disease that needs to know that we will NOT give up without a fight!

And as we ring in our 3rd year of the CHOC Flip Flop Day, we’re given a 3rd opportunity to show the children our passion & support by reminding them that they are never standing alone! CHOC’s annual event will be celebrated on the 18th February 2022, and this year it’s going to be bigger, better and filled with more sole. South Africans are certainly filled with wholesome souls when it comes to our children, showing that we can rally behind them, as CHOC SOLE-diers, and truly be a force to be reckoned with.

Where to find your Flip Flop Day stickers?

A donation of R10 gets you a Flip Flop Day sticker, then slip on your favourite flip flops and take a colourful stand with all of us in support of the brave children and teenagers of the CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation who are facing the battle against childhood cancer.

Get ready to flip your flops and join us in making a difference together! For more information or to purchase your sticker, visit a CHOC region closest to you, www.choc.org.za or pop into your local PNA or Tekkie Town store.

“I am thrilled that one of the first major fundraising events as newly appointed CEO of CHOC is the exciting Flip Flop Day. Wearing my flip flops and my sticker allows me the opportunity to emphasise that a few minutes is all it takes to make a meaningful contribution to ensure that no child or teen walks their journey alone. From children at schools, business colleagues, health workers and all other South Africans proudly showing their commitment to uplift the lives of children and teens on their cancer journey” states an excited Hedley Lewis
