In this episode Dr. Jenny Hobson will be interviewing Dr. Karen Parker Davidson, RN, an expert in rhinomanometry. Rhinomanometry measures air pressure and the rate of airflow during breathing. These measurements are then used to calculate nasal airway resistance which is important in the field of airway treatment. So many of us don’t realize that our noses are actually the problem, and we need to work on improving the ability to breathe out of it. Many of us have a bend in our nose called a deviated septum which narrows our nasal passages. Slowly but surely, this causes us to breathe through our mouth and the beginning of an airway compromise.
Learn about the history of rhinomanometry, what normal values look like and where to find this testing. Dr. Davidson will review the key output parameters and what the data means.
BIO: Dr. Karen Davidson has held many positions in the medical device industry for more than 25 years, specifically in the ENT and Sleep markets, in addition to more than 30 years of clinical experience including service as a Flight Nurse in the United States Air Force Reserves and committee member for various Otolaryngology meetings. Dr. Davidson serves as the Vice President at GM Instruments, Ltd. with a special interest in and published on the technology of objective nasal measurements, nasal physiology, clinical application, reimbursement, health economics, and health policy.
Dr. Davidson is a national speaker for the series “The Nose Knows: Nasal Function and Resistance”. She is a co-author of three books and currently writing as a contributing author in a pediatric airway book on nasal function and resistance for release in 2022 and 2023.
Dr. Jenny interviews another family physical therapist who she has been working with. Learn how this very different approach helps posture and breathing. Dan Houglum, MSPT, ATC/L, PRC, PRI Faculty, is a physical therapist who has been treating patients for over 25 years. He began learning the PRI approach in 2004, was certified in 2012, and became an instructor in 2016. He has been working with her own family for about a year and Dr. Jenny explains her experience. PRI is not like other physical therapy approaches as it is not the typical manual therapy where you move and stretch joints and muscles for the patient. This technique identifies what areas of your ribcage are not moving or breathing well and how to restore proper airflow with the patient actively. This then results in changes in ribcage position and spinal alignment. Listen in and learn more as these two top physical therapists have a great discussion about the philosophy.
Listen in while Dr. Jenny interviews airway centric dentist, Dr. Martha Cortes. She explains how her career has progressed toward a specialty on transforming TMJ and sleep apnea patients. She transforms the airway size through appliance therapies and adult expansion of the palate. She is a pioneer and educator on these therapies and has a wealth of knowledge and experience to share how one with facial pain, headaches, snoring, sleep apnea and more can be reversed with the appropriate dental oral appliance therapy. She is a team player and is one of the dentist that knows that it takes a team approach to tackle these difficult problems.. Dr. Jenny and Dr. Cortes work as a team for many patients that need breathing retraining and myofunctional therapy to help support the dental treatment plan she establishes with her patients. Adult palatal expansion is possible and she is one of the best in the States performing this type of treatment.
Dr. Martha Cortes resides in NYC and is a general, cosmetic, biological, neuromuscular and laser dentist who sub-specializes in the treatment of sleep breathing disorders, and temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMD). Her methods include non-surgical techniques to treat TMD, as well as facial-airway-enhancement remodeling techniques designed to treat sleep apnea.
As a multi-boarded practitioner and lecturer, Dr. Cortés does not just focus on the teeth, she considers your teeth and your body incorporating a biological edge in her approach, techniques, and practice. It is with this background in combination with her knowledge/ experience of neuromuscular dentistry, laser dentistry, posturology and chirodontics.
Constantly studying new techniques while expanding current ones, Martha Cortés truly rises to challenge standards and approaches to treat her patient’s health. Beginning with your mouth, she brings truth and light into her trademark “Your Smile, Your Health” ™️.
Listen to this exciting podcast where Dr. Joshua Wechsler, doctor of pediatric gastroenterology, has first-hand experience with reducing his own TMJ, tinnitus and Long COVID symptoms through treatment with Dr. Hobson. He explains his journey and realization of how the breathing retraining program can also help his pediatric patients with GI problems including feeding aversion, vomiting, choking, chronic cough, feeling food pass slowly or get stuck. He agrees that Dr. Hobson's breathing retraining program helps improve their GI symptoms and has included this in his approach to treating his patients.
Joshua B. Wechsler, MD, MSCI, is Assistant Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition at Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago and Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Allergy and Immunology at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago.
Dr. Wechsler is a patient of Dr. Hobson who has this unique background and specialty and has found that his personal treatment of Long COVID symptoms including tinnitus, headaches, TMJ, and hyperventilation has been reduced considerably through Dr. Hobson's treatment. He now refers his pediatric patients to the practice.
The vast majority of his patients have an Eosinophilic Gastrointestinal Disorder: Eosinophilic Esophagitis (EoE), Eosinophilic Gastritis, Eosinophilic Duodenitis. The primary symptom in many of these cases is dysphagia, and many of these patients have chronic regurgitation/rumination. In addition, hypermobility and dysautonomia are common in these patients as well.
The patients range in age from 9 months to 22 years. The symptoms really vary by age with young children having feeding aversion, vomiting, choking, and older children/teens having a chronic cough, feeling food pass slowly or get stuck. Chronic regurgitation is quite common and can be associated with hiatal hernia which has an unknown prevalence in EoE but appears to be present in up to 10-15% from his experience. Dr. Wechsler believes in a more holistic approach and attempts to address issues well beyond just the esophagus or stomach focusing on quality of life by including CranioFacial Physical Therapy, swallowing retraining, and breathing retraining.
Our jaws are getting smaller and our teeth crooked and crowded, creating not only aesthetic challenges but also difficulties with breathing. Modern orthodontics has persuaded us that braces and oral devices can correct these problems. While teeth can certainly be straightened, what about the underlying causes of this rapid shift in oral evolution and the health risks posed by obstructed airways?
Dr. Sandra Kahn created the GOPex Program (Good Oral Posture Exercises) with Dr. Simon Wong. This mobile app program is one of the tools Dr. Hobson uses to train her patients on restoring oral posture and airway health. Dr. Kahn is also an inventor of the Vacuum Activator, which is a device that allows the user to maintain negative pressure with a feedback system, working as a visual aid to know if the tongue is placed in the correct position. She has more inventions up her sleeve in the future. You can find her books and inventions at forwardontics.com.
Dr. Sandra Kahn D.D.D.S., M.S.D. is a graduate from the National University of Mexico (UNAM) and the University of the Pacific School of Dentistry in San Francisco, California. She began her work in orthodontics with a specialty in physical anthropology at the University of California in Berkeley focusing her studies on human craniofacial growth and development. After 22 years of clinical experience in orthodontics treating thousands of patients, Dr. Kahn was not satisfied with traditional orthodontics as a solution for treating her own children. In 2013, she retired from "traditional" orthodontics to focus in orthodontics related to a healthy airway, with a concentration on pediatric prevention of long-term Obstructive Sleep Apnea
Her approach is to treat the entire face and not just the teeth. Dr. Kahn has been invited to serve on craniofacial anomalies teams at both Stanford University and the University of California in San Francisco (UCSF). Dr. Kahn is an author and international lecturer on the topic of airway centric orthodontics. She is currently the only Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics that practices exclusively Biobloc Orthotropics and airway-centric orthodontics.
Listen in to this intriguing interview where Dr. Jenny speaks to fellow physical therapist and founder of Postural Restoration Institute, Ron Hruska. His institute is an educational center that teaches physical therapists and other healthcare providers to look at the body in a completely different way. Dr. Jenny is undergoing this therapy herself, and her children have seen great strides in improving their posture in just a handful of visits. He explains how the body should work and how both sides should oscillate and move. When they don’t, we start our path to dysfunction, learning how to live and breathe in unnatural, asymmetrical positions. Ron incorporates the eyes and the feet in his approach to make it a whole body restoration. He is a true genius and one to really learn from.
Ronald J. Hruska Jr. is a practicing Physical Therapist and consultant for Hruska Clinic Restorative Physical Therapy and PRI Vision clinics, as well as executive director of the Postural Restoration Institute in Lincoln, NE.
Listen in to one of the top pediatric dentists, authors and researchers who really understands craniofacial growth and development of children. Dr. Boyd is known for early childhood treatment of proper occlusion and midface growth to help children grow up to become adults with healthy airways in their noses and throats. He explains how pre-industrial skulls compare to modern day skulls; how modern day humans have become narrowed in the nasal passage and jaws due to diet changes and its effect on the development of the face. He’ll share how parents can be aware of signs of poor breathing and when your child may have a narrowed airway. Dr. Hobson and Dr. Boyd both practice in Chicago and collaborate on airway topics such as myofunctional therapy, posture training and breathing retraining with their common patients.
DR. KEVIN BOYD is a board-certified Pediatric Dentist in Chicago who holds an M.Sc. degree in Human Nutrition and Dietetics. He teaches in the Pediatric Dentistry residency training program at Lurie Children’s Hospital and also serves as a dental consultant to the Lurie Sleep Medicine service. Dr. Boyd is an adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Arkansas mentoring PhD research, and also serves as a Visiting Consulting Scholar at the University of Pennsylvania's Museum of Archeology and Anthropology where he is collaboratively exploring a hypothetical relationship between changed dietary practices since the Industrial Revolution and diminished human dentofacial development. He lectures worldwide on the topics of Early Childhood Malocclusion (under age 72 months), pediatric sleep-breathing hygiene, and Evolutionary Oral Medicine/Darwinian Dentistry.
Dr. Mariano Rocabado is a leading expert in the field of TMJ, cranio-mandibular disorders, and the connection of the head and neck to the bite (occlusion). Hear how he explains what it takes to have a healthy TMJ and spine. Dr. Rocabado teaches his approach to head and neck health to doctors, dentists, and physical therapists around the world. Dr. Hobson interviewed Dr. Rocabado while in Santiago, Chile during her training with him in January 2018, as she has been chosen to teach his work in the US through the University of St. Augustine.
Dr. Jennifer Hobson sits down with George Stortz, a physical therapist and former Hobson Institute Breathing Clinic client who suffers from sleep apnea. Listen to his personal journey and health transformation as he discusses how nose breathing changed his life and how he has been able to reduce his CPAP machine usage.
Dr. Hobson discusses how the ALF appliance treats TMJ disorder and expands compromised airways. Dr. Crowe is recognized as a top-level practitioner in the field, advocating for total systemic health. He has dedicated his practice of dental medicine to whole body care and dental cranial treatment.
Dr. Crowe and Dr. Hobson have worked together for years, taking a whole-body approach to help patients with chronic pain. Dr. Hobson and her team help to balance out the body, including the pelvis, and upper cervical spine to the mandible while Dr. Crowe works on the occlusion or a patient’s “bite”.
Dr. Jenny Hobson interviews Lynett Putterman, a Black-Belt NIA (Neuromuscular Integrative Action) instructor, about her recovery from a spinal cord injury. Find out how NIA helped her get back to teaching dance 3 months post-injury, and how breathwork training from Dr. Hobson helped her recover her energy and improve circulation. The NIA Technique is a mind/body physical conditioning program that initially stood for Non-Impact Aerobics, evolved to include neurological integrative practices and teachings. It combines martial arts, modern dance arts, and yoga in a workout set to music.
Listen to Dr. Hobson interview James Nestor, investigative journalist and the author of the best-selling book, Breath, New Science of a Lost Art. He presents research on breathing techniques in existence since the beginning of time and how it compares to Dr. Hobson’s practice. Hear about his participation in a research experiment through Stanford University’s ENT department where silicone implants were placed in his nose to plug them to force him to mouth breathe. As a result, it caused him to snore at night, have sleep apnea, increased blood pressure and heart rate, and more.
Dr. Michael Gelb, DDS, MS is a world-renowned TMJ and Sleep Specialist with practices in both New York City and White Plains. He received his D.D.S. degree from Columbia University College of Dental Medicine and his M.S. from SUNY at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine. Dr. Gelb is the co-author of “GASP: Airway Health- The Hidden Path to Wellness”, and is the co-founder of both The Foundation for Airway Health and The American Academy of Physiological Medicine and Dentistry. Dr. Hobson discusses with Dr. Gelb the different dental treatments that he has for TMJ/TMD facial pain patients and the airway opening treatments that he provides. Dr. Gelb actively includes physical therapy, myofunctional therapy, and breathing retraining in his treatment plan and understands the importance of all of these parts of the big picture. He includes the contributions that his father has made to the dental world and knows Dr. Hobson’s, mentor, Dr. Mariano Rocabado, and the importance of the cervical spine curvature and how it affects occlusion.
This episode is an interview with Dr Jennifer Hobson, the founder of the Hobson Institute and owner of Physical Therapy Renaissance (now Physio Partners), a physical therapy practice specializing in the head and neck region in Chicago.
Dr. Hobson shares her personal story about poor breathing and her children's experiences that changed her life. She explains how proper breathing is an important aspect of our health, and the reason she founded the Hobson Institute.

Listen as Dr. Jennifer Hobson interviews Dr. Milton Geivelis who is highly trained in frenectomies for infants to adult ages using a CO2 laser. They discuss frenectomies, the importance of pre and post frenectomy myofunctional therapy and wound care for tongue tied infants to adult patients. Not many understand how the tongue plays a role in breathing and how it leads to sleep apnea and other problems when it’s not functioning correctly. Dr. Geivelis and Dr. Hobson have a great dialogue on how an interdisciplinary approach results in the success of the procedure and a healthier patient overall. Dr. Milton Geivelis is from the Chicago-land area and is highly trained in frenectomies for infants to adult ages using a CO2 laser. He has extensive training with the best in the field, including Dr. Larry Kotlow, Dr. Bobby Ghaheri, and Dr. Soroush Zaghi. Dr. Geivelis and Dr. Hobson have a common passion for helping patients with breathing and airway problems. Dr. Geivelis understands the importance of preparing the tongue and oral soft tissues for the procedure by training the tongue to stretch and strengthen so it is optimally functioning as it is tethered to the floor of the mouth. Just as many will do pre-op physical therapy to their knee or hip, this is just like physical therapy for the mouth and tongue. Learn why he thinks the therapy is important for pre and post procedures and what ramifications may occur without it.
