Hi, thanks for stopping by!
My name is Shantanu and I am the founder of Bombay Shaving Company and Bombae. My company has scaled to 1500+ Cr value (if this metric means anything haha), but more importantly, is a loved personal care brand which has scaled to 50L households and 1L stores in 5 years.
The BarberShop was started with a clear thesis - India needs to create approximately a million jobs a month, currently, we create almost two hundred thousand. Our ‘Funda’ is to simplify entrepreneurship and make it accessible to everyone in the country so we inculcate an enterprising habit in the 23-24 year old of today.
After the love received by S1, we have decided to go beyond conversations on our podcast to tangible help. With the help of our sponsors at BSC and Bombae we have put together a season which brings together a corpus of 50+ equity seekers looking to support 20+ start-ups in their growth and success.
What if Bombay Shaving Company’s biggest opportunity is already in front of it, but the founders are not seeing it clearly? In this episode, Shantanu Deshpande (Founder & CEO, Bombay Shaving Company) sits down with Aditya Sehgal (Founder, Asgard. World and Ex-President & COO, Reckitt), along with Deepak Gupta (Co-Founder & COO, Bombay Shaving Company), to unpack what it really takes to build a large Indian consumer brand for the next decade. At the centre of this conversation is Bombay Shaving Company’s next big question: Can a grooming brand from India become a ₹4,000 Cr business, and eventually build products strong enough to compete globally? Aditya breaks down why India may still be behind China in innovation velocity, why local manufacturing is not just a financial decision but a strategic one, why AI will completely change how teams are built, and why money follows opportunity, not the other way around. What you’ll learn from this episode: - Why 10-year-old startups learn and adapt faster than 100-year-old FMCG giants - How the "XEMES" innovation formula works and why India's "jugaad" mentality might be holding it back - What the 2x2 AI Decision Matrix is (Repeatability vs. Sensitivity) and what tasks to automate - Why taking a lower margin to build local manufacturing is a massive strategic moat - How a non-tech executive built a fully functional app in 8 days just by using AI If you’re building a consumer brand, D2C business, retail company, or India-first startup, this episode gives you a sharp look at what it actually takes to build beyond the next quarter and create something that can compound for years. Everyone talks about building a brand. Few talk about what actually breaks when growth starts becoming real. This is the very first episode of Founder's Meet, and it's happening in Pune. Shantanu Deshpande sits down with founders building across skincare, AI, home décor, food, climate action, travel, experiences, and consumer brands to unpack the real questions behind scaling in India. From a ₹50 Cr D2C food brand trying to scale to ₹500 Cr, to a SaaS founder questioning India's willingness to pay, to premium brands figuring out storytelling and consumer trust, this conversation brings together the messy but important problems founders face after the first phase of growth. What this episode covers:
If you're building a D2C brand, SaaS company, consumer business, or founder-led startup in India, this episode offers a raw look at the decisions, trade-offs, and uncomfortable truths behind building something that lasts.
India’s next big consumer brands won’t be built on taste. They’ll be built on habits.
In this episode of Khul Ke Scale, Shantanu Deshpande (Founder & CEO, Bombay Shaving Company) sits down with Rahul Jain (Co-founder, Beanly Coffee) and Samayesh Khanna (Co-founder, Beanly Coffee), along with industry veterans Shiv Shivakumar (Operating Partner, Advent | Ex-SVP, Nokia | Ex-CEO (India), PepsiCo) and Toshan Tamhane (Global Chief Operating Officer, UPL) to break down what it really takes to build a modern consumer brand in India.
From coffee habits and convenience culture to product psychology, repeat purchases, distribution, and brand recall, this episode goes deep into why some brands become daily rituals while most disappear after the initial hype cycle.
Beanly Coffee explains why they’re betting on India’s “on-the-go” lifestyle, how small product decisions influence consumer behaviour, and why building a habit is far more important than simply building a good product.
At the centre of the conversation is a bigger question every founder struggles with: Why do consumers remember some brands instantly… while forgetting others completely?
What you’ll learn from this episode:
• Why 25% of Indians skipping breakfast is a massive business opportunity • Why convenience is becoming India’s biggest consumer trend • Why most D2C brands fail after their first growth spike • The real role of packaging, fragrance, texture, and recall in FMCG • How founders misunderstand consumer behaviour while scaling • What makes certain products become part of people’s daily routines
If you’re building a consumer brand, D2C startup, FMCG business, or simply trying to understand where Indian consumer behaviour is heading, this episode offers a sharp breakdown of what actually creates long-term brand relevance in one of the world’s toughest markets.

Everyone thought women needed “safe” razors. Turns out, that was the biggest mistake the industry made.
In this episode, Shantanu Deshpande (Founder & CEO, Bombay Shaving Company) breaks down how one insight led to building Bombae, a ₹150 Cr brand in just a few years.
From understanding how women actually shave to rejecting the entire “make it pink” playbook, this is a masterclass in building products that truly solve for the user. Not by copying what exists, but by questioning the assumption itself.
Shantanu explains how the real gap wasn’t safety, but lack of control and feedback, and how designing for that changed everything.
What makes this conversation powerful is the clarity: most brands don’t fail because of execution, they fail because they solve the wrong problem.
What you’ll discover: • Why “pink razors” are fundamentally flawed • The real difference between men vs women shaving behaviour • How one insight built a ₹150 Cr brand • Why copying incumbents guarantees failure • The thinking behind designing the Roll Blade
Can a brand win just by understanding the user better than everyone else?
This episode shows what happens when you stop guessing and start observing.
Everyone thinks luggage is a simple business… until they try building one.
So how did Nasher Miles build a ₹150 Cr brand in one of the toughest consumer categories in India?
In this episode of Khul Ke Scale, Shantanu Deshpande (Founder & CEO, Bombay Shaving Company) sits down with Lokesh Daga (Co-Founder & CEO, Nasher Miles) and Shruti K. Daga (Co-Founder, Nasher Miles) along with Revant Bhate (CEO, Mosaic Wellness) to unpack what it really takes to build in a market dominated by VIP, Safari, Samsonite and now Mokobara.
From scaling to ₹150 Cr revenue, raising ₹37 Cr from 70 angel investors after Shark Tank, building a luggage brand in a low-repeat category, depending heavily on marketplaces, competing with VIP, Safari, Samsonite and Mokobara, to figuring out offline retail, EBOs, branding, profitability and Made-in-India manufacturing… this conversation goes deep into the realities of modern consumer brands in India.

If you’re a founder, operator, marketer, investor, or someone building a consumer brand in India, this episode is packed with hard-earned lessons on growth, positioning, retail, and brand-building.
Everyone thought Karan Johar’s jewellery brand was just another celebrity play.
It wasn’t. Behind Tyaani is a sharper bet: build a ₹250 Cr profitable jewellery brand inside a category that is barely 1% of India’s jewellery market.
So what did Karan Johar and Shravan Satyani understand that most jewellery brands missed?
Today, jewellery is emotion. It is vanity. It is Instagram. It is weddings. It is individuality. It is the feeling of wearing something no one else has.
In this episode of Khul Ke Scale, Shantanu Deshpande (Founder & CEO, Bombay Shaving Company) sits down with Karan Johar (Filmmaker & Founder, Tyaani Jewellery) and Shravan Satyani (Co-founder & Managing Director, Tyaani Jewellery), along with Revant Bhate (CEO & Co-Founder, Mosaic Wellness), to decode how Tyaani built a 12-store, ₹250 Cr profitable jewellery business with 15% PAT.
At the centre of it all is one big consumer shift: the Indian bride no longer wants just one expensive heirloom piece. She wants more looks, more occasions, more individuality, and more value in every purchase. This episode breaks down how Tyaani built around Polki, kept 80% of its inventory exclusive to each store, and still questions whether scaling too fast could hurt the brand.
What you’ll learn from this episode:
• Why Tyaani chose the 1% Polki market instead of chasing 85% gold • How Karan Johar’s taste became a real business advantage • Why Indian brides now want more looks, not just heirloom jewellery • Why 80% store-exclusive inventory is both a moat and a risk • Whether Tyaani should scale stores, take PE money, or prepare for IPO
If you’re building a consumer brand, luxury business, retail company, or founder-led brand, this episode gives you a sharp look at how emotion, exclusivity, systems, and timing come together to build something that lasts.
India’s richest buyers still choose SIPs over Mercedes. Why? When a ₹1 Cr car loses to a ₹10k SIP, you’re not fighting competitors, you’re fighting mindset. In this episode, Shantanu sits down with Santosh Iyer (MD & CEO, Mercedes-Benz India Pvt. Ltd.) for a no-filter conversation on why India’s luxury car market is still tiny, what really drives high-ticket purchases, and how culture, family hierarchy, and risk appetite shape consumption in this country. From selling weighing machines to building one of India’s most premium auto brands, Santosh’s journey is anything but conventional. He shares how early failures in Nepal, turning around Yamaha, and working across global companies shaped his belief in one core idea: trust first, everything else later. Key takeaways from the episode: 1. Why Mercedes competes with SIPs, not just BMW & Audi 2. Why a ₹1 Cr car still takes 45 days of family decision-making 3. What stops India’s luxury market from scaling despite rising incomes 4. How D2C changed car buying and killed the “discount mindset” 5. What EVs, AI, and the next decade of mobility will actually look like. If you’re building a premium brand, selling high-ticket products, or trying to understand Indian consumers beyond surface-level data, this episode will completely change how you think about scale in India. Everyone said electronics retail would die. Yet, Vijay Sales built a ₹13,000 Cr empire offline…anyway.
So what did they understand that everyone else missed?
Not by moving faster… but by thinking differently when everyone else followed the same playbook.
In this episode, Shantanu Deshpande (Founder & CEO, Bombay Shaving Company) sits down with Nilesh Gupta (MD, Vijay Sales) to unpack how a 57-year-old business stayed relevant through every wave, from colour TV booms to Amazon, Flipkart, and now quick commerce.
At the centre of it all is Nanu Gupta (Founder, Vijay Sales), who came to Mumbai with ₹50 in his pocket and built the business without a blueprint, and made decisions most founders wouldn’t dare to take, including walking away from top brands and putting consumer trust above everything else. This episode breaks down how those choices quietly compounded into scale.
If you’re building a consumer brand, retail business, or D2C startup, this episode gives you a clear look at what it actually takes to build something that lasts.
A ₹30 Cr pickle brand built from traditional recipes… now aiming for ₹500 Cr. But can a digital-first FMCG brand scale in India without going offline? In this episode, Niharika Bhargava (CEO, The Little Farm) and Aditya Bhargava (COO, The Little Farm) join Shantanu Deshpande (Founder & CEO, Bombay Shaving Company), along with Arjun Purkayastha (SVP & Managing Director, Greater China and North Asia, Reckitt), for a sharp conversation on building and scaling a modern food brand in India. Little Farm started by reviving family recipes and selling at farmers’ markets, before moving to D2C during COVID. Today, the brand has scaled to ~₹30 Cr ARR, with 70% of its revenue driven by quick commerce, selling over 70,000 jars every month. But growth brings harder questions: What does it really take to scale from ₹30 Cr to ₹200 Cr and eventually ₹500 Cr in a highly competitive, unorganised category? From distribution strategy and channel mix to inventory planning and product expansion, this episode breaks down the real decisions founders face while scaling a consumer brand in India. Problems we solve in this episode: • When is the right time for a young brand to enter offline retail, and does discovery still happen there? • How should founders move from manual inventory planning to a scalable forecasting system while staying cash-efficient? • When should a brand deepen its core category vs expand into new SKUs or adjacent products to drive growth? From organic mentions by the world’s biggest podcast to building a powerful creator network, this episode uncovers how modern brands are actually built. This episode goes inside the real shift from founder hustle to founder design.
Gopal built SOLARA by staying close to operations in the early years. Today, his role has shifted. He focuses on growth, while others run execution. But that transition is not automatic. As a founder, you are constantly switching between operator, shareholder, and long-term architect. The hard part is knowing when to step back and let specialists take over.
He joins Shantanu Deshpande, along with Shiv Shivakumar, Operating Partner at Advent International, and Toshan Tamhane, COO at UPL Group, for a candid conversation on scaling in a changing consumer market.
From bootstrapping decisions to the ₹500 crore acquisition question, from hiring senior leaders to building culture without bureaucracy, the discussion goes deep into how consumer brands must evolve.
They also unpack a powerful external trend: the rise of the open kitchen. Appliances are no longer hidden utilities. They are visible, aesthetic, and part of lifestyle identity. Water purifiers, drinkware, and kitchen equipment have shifted from commodities to fashion. When the kitchen becomes open, the product must earn pride of place.
Problems we solve in this episode:
Should you bootstrap to ₹500 crores or raise capital to hit ₹1,000+ crores faster?
Will a celebrity endorsement build trust, or are regional micro-influencers the smarter bet?
When should you hire senior talent from outside without breaking your startup culture?
Do experience stores make sense for a digital-first brand going offline?
If you are building a consumer brand navigating scale, capital, and positioning in a more design-conscious India, this episode will sharpen your thinking.
This episode goes inside the realities of scaling a D2C brand.

What happens when two people realise India isn’t lacking luxury, but starving for togetherness?
They walked away from stable careers and built a ₹120 CR hospitality brand that proves ‘luxury’ isn’t always required to succeed!
In this episode of The Barbershop, Shantanu sits down with Deven Parulekar (Founder of SaffronStays), who built his brand on one simple belief: where families bond. From a honeymoon dream many years ago to a reality in 2015, this vision has expanded into a network of 425 villas, each designed to bring people closer.
But here’s the part that sets this story apart: SaffronStays refuses the ‘luxury’ tag. Its heart lies in homes that feel welcoming, with villas kept ready for every moment without anyone stepping in uninvited.
An unexpected call about a 130-year-old heritage home changed everything, opening the door to a vision that would one day aim to become the Taj of homestays in India. And through the years, the brand has quietly reshaped how India thinks about travel, belonging, and human connection.
What you’ll discover:
Why the brand refuses to be ‘the largest’, but strives to be ‘the finest’, with a mission to combat loneliness.
How human bonds spark real business growth
How hardships during COVID-19 opened the door to unexpected success
How one historic villa changed the company’s direction
The three values that build lasting brands.
If you’ve ever experienced the joy of bonding with your people, watch how a villa brand reimagined Indian hospitality by focusing on bonds, over luxury.

Men are breaking silently, and most people do not notice until it is too late.
This Men’s Day conversation brings Shantanu together with Chirag Taneja and the GoKwik team to talk about the quiet struggles that shape a man’s life.
Men live shorter, visit doctors less, hide pain behind work, and carry pressure they never learned to talk about.
Many grow up without strong male role models. Many lose friendships after marriage.
Many feel responsible for everyone but themselves.
Most of this remains unspoken because men are taught to stay strong even when strength is slipping away.
In this episode, they finally say the things men usually swallow.
They talk about exhaustion that has no outlet, about feeling misunderstood in rooms full of people, about why therapy often misses what men cannot put into words.
Watch this if you want to understand the men in your life. Or if you are a man who has been waiting for someone to understand you.

Every career is built on selling. Especially an entrepreneur’s!
That’s what Shantanu and Ankush (Co-Founder and CEO at Rebel Foods) suggested at Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies, Navi Mumbai, and we couldn’t agree more.

Some journeys begin at home.
For the first episode of Razorpreneur 3.0, mine does too. This time, I don’t bring a founder, VC, or CEO. I bring my mom – the best salesperson I know!
In this episode shot in Pune, Aai visits her everyday kirana shops and steps into the world of sales for the first time. From friendly local stores to the chaos of FC Road, she convinces complete strangers to try the Omni Blade instead of the trimmers they usually buy. She has no sales experience, feels nervous, and faces rejection. But with every “no,” she learns, discovers the power of connecting with people, and sees that energy and storytelling can turn strangers into customers.
Watching Aai’s pitches get braver with every try and seeing her enjoy each small win reminded me what entrepreneurship is really about. The courage, the no-excuse attitude, the determination.

Can you scale fast without falling into legal traps?
In this episode of The BarberShop with Shantanu, we are joined by Archana Rajaram (Managing Partner, River Law) and Anup Agarwal (Co-Founder & CEO, Mintifi) to decode a side of entrepreneurship that’s often left behind and what really happens when capital, compliance, and chaos collide.
From helping founders steer clear of costly mistakes to making sense of India’s tricky legal systems, Archana breaks down how "good lawyering should never come in the way of business". And Anup shares how Mintifi is not just simplifying credit for distributors but doing it while keeping unit economics and risk in check.
This episode is basically a founder survival guide on what to fight for, what to let go, and how to not get distracted by vanity clauses.

Some episodes are personal.
This one is family.
I had the privilege of sitting down with two people who’ve shaped the way I think, live, and lead: Dr. Pravin Bhagwat (Founder of 14 Trees Foundation) and my father, Kiran Deshpande (Former CEO, Tech Mahindra. Founder, Mojo Networks. Board Member, 14Trees Foundation) two entrepreneurial men I've had the privilege of learning from since I was a child.
They built a company together. Exited it with grace. And then, Pravin uncle did something most people wouldn’t, he walked away from the tech world to plant trees and build forests. Literally.
He started the 14 Trees Foundation, a community-led movement that’s quietly restoring India’s green cover and here’s why he did it:
While reading a 6th-grade textbook on photosynthesis with his daughter, Pravin Uncle had an eye-opening realization: that the carbon we emit can be neutralized simply by planting trees. In fact, it takes exactly 14 trees to neutralize the carbon footprint of one person over a lifetime.
This simple, measurable, and relatable insight inspired him to act. It clicked with me instantly, and it’s become the core of what 14 Trees stands for, bringing nature back, one tree at a time.
And his conversation isn’t about funding rounds or exits.
It’s about friendship, purpose, legacy, and trees, making the world better:
Some things you’ll take away from this episode:
If you’ve ever asked yourself, “What comes after success?” this episode might offer a few answers.
And here’s a way you can be part of it:
If this conversation resonates with you, share the video on any social media platform along with your own takeaway (no generic reposts or AI summaries), and send it to me via DM or email shantanu@bombayshavingcompany.com and CC deepti@bombayshavingcompany.com.
I’ll personally plant one tree in your name at 14 Trees.
And if you go a step further and plant one yourself, maybe for a parent, mentor, pet, or friend, I’ll plant two more trees for you.
That’s three trees. One simple act. No deadline.
Let’s grow something together.
Is the healthcare system in India broken, or just evolving?
In the latest episode of Barbershop, Shantanu is joined by Viren Shetty, Vice Chairperson of Narayana Health (NH), to explore how the pandemic reshaped global healthcare and how, despite the changes, NH is committed to staying true to its values while introducing its new inpatient care services.

He shares how Narayana Health has emerged as a leading healthcare provider in the country. The organisation has set a new benchmark in the industry by offering health insurance at just ₹10,000 per year for a family of four. This move, he explains, represents a major shift toward making healthcare more accessible, affordable, and focused on quality for all.
Viren also reveals the intense pressure of being a second-gen entrepreneur and constantly proving himself while leading a firm rooted in his father’s vision.
What you’ll discover:
