Healthworker Talk is a podcast in which NHS staff from a wide range of services and professions talk to Hope Samuel, a clinical psychologist. They talk about what they do at work and the meaning of their work to them. We hear from people working in all areas of the health service and get an insight into how they fit into the complex organisation of the NHS. Healthworker Talk focuses on the rewards and some of the challenges of the work with a particular focus on the impact of the pandemic.

In this episode we meet Helen, a senior NHS manager. She explains her role in pulling together and integrating different health services and agencies to provide healthcare to the population of Leeds. We discuss the challenges in bringing about change in a system that has been battered by Covid and has to respond to the needs of the population and the demands of government policies with a workforce that is exhausted.

In this episode we meet Lewis, a paramedic. He describes the surprisingly wide range of issues he has to deal with on call outs in the course of his 12 hour shift and talks honestly about what it was like working at the height of the pandemic. He also talks about how he copes with the emotional impact of the job and about how paramedics can be the target of unprovoked aggression.

We meet David, a psychoanalytic psychotherapist who works with people with learning disabilities. He explains some of the history of the way people with learning disabilities have been treated by our society and how that continues to have an impact on individuals’ lives and freedoms, highlighted recently by the disproportionate effect of Covid 19 on this population. He explains how he works with people and their carers and the importance of offering space and time to help understand painful feelings.

Nicole – We meet Nicole a clinical psychologist working in a community mental health service. She explains her particular role with her patients as well as her tasks within the wider team and how she manages the stress. We hear about the aspects of Nicole’s background that have led her to this work. She also describes some of the surprises and creativity that has emerged in the face of the pandemic.

Jane – We meet Jane, a district nurse working in a new job created during the pandemic, to speed up the time it takes to discharge people from hospital. She explains some of the tricky situations she needs to sort out and the rewards and challenges of doing so.

We meet a junior doctor in his first year of work since leaving medical school. He captures the anxiety of managing responsibility while feeling very inexperienced and talks us through what happened on his first night on call. We hear about what got him into medicine as a mature student and whether medicine is all he hoped it would be.

Alistair – We meet Alistair, a social worker in a mental health rehabilitation team. We find out what he does to help his service users coming out of psychiatric hospital to settle in the community. Hannah – We meet Hannah, a dietitian working in a community learning disabilities team. We hear what it’s like to do the job, what motivates and what frustrates her and how she and her team have managed in the pandemic. Rebecca – We meet Rebecca, a community nurse and expert in organisational change and management. She shares with us the reasons behind her decisions to change from clinician to manager and back again and what each role is like. We meet Charles, a consultant in palliative care. That’s the care and treatment offered to people who are facing the end of their lives and the ways their quality of life can be improved. Charles talks through some of the issues that arise when working with people who are dying, including questions about “a good death”. We also talk about the difficulties and frustrations of working during the pandemic when Charles and his team have found it hard to reach those most at need and have had to be creative in their approach.
