Sigh… We’re here with Mare after her interrogation with Samson. She’s exhausted and feels dissected. Maven is here to make sure that she has suffered and yet, play cat and mouse with her. Once he has her back under his thumb, his next plan for her is right out of the Calore/ Merandus playbook. There’s even a slithering red dress for her to wear. This episode might be a James Bond movie…
The conversation is so good that we don’t get many references in but if this episode makes you feel the same way it makes us feel, we’re here for you. We do manage to at least work Spaceballs in, so we have some humor for you.

We’ve finally made it to our first non-Mare chapter! The bad news is, it’s a Cameron chapter. We do find out that Maven kept his word and that all of her group was released. Tuck was evacuated and the survivors have been moved to a new underground base. When we join Cameron there, we catch up with some favorites. Farley is pouring over maps while shoveling in food, the Colonel is stalking around the control room watching the unrest in Corvium, and Cal is holed up in a comms room. A very big comms room…
During the address Maven gives, our rebels find out that Mare has been interrogated. Cal is horrified to find out that Samson did it. Mare was kept in the dark on a lot of things but not so much that Samson wouldn’t have gotten some valuable information. Cameron is taking all of this, and Maven’s behavior, in and starting to piece some things together with his status in the capital.
The references in this one are pretty great. We touch on everything from DVR habits in the mid 00’s to Woodstock ‘99: Trainwreck with some stops at Lost, Mean Girls, and Ghostbusters 2 in the middle. It’ll keep you laughing even though some of the subject matter isn’t always funny. Your emotional support podcast is always here for you.

Mare finally gets taken out of her gilded cage and she knows exactly where she’s being taken, a room where death has happened in front of her. No one is expecting her and Evangeline is trying to make a very public point. The consequences for her words land on Mare and she is spared no mercy.
Beth is real mad this week. Who needs a shower?
References this week include Homestar Runner, classic SNL moments, and the obligatory Hunger Games. We’ve got big opinions and you won’t want to miss it.

This week, Mare is constantly guarded but feels alone. Silent stone keeps her powers out of her reach and Maven never comes to visit. The pity parties are back and in full effect. Now that she has nothing to do but think, it’s the Mare we’ve come to know (and love?)
When she finally does get a visitor, it’s someone she didn’t expect and they take her somewhere she never wanted to revisit. Where is she going and what will happen when she gets there?
References come fast and include The Ring, The Hunger Games, Harry Potter, and more of your favorites. We apologize for the sound on the episode. We have some electrical interference that we are working out. Thanks for all you do!!

The Blackrun is spiraling out of control and is a flaming twist of metal. The face to face showdown with Maven is finally here. Mare expected that Maven would fulfill his promise of hunting her down before her birthday but she never imagined this.

All of the grown ups and big wigs are gathering at Tuck to discuss how stopping “Operation Human Shield” is going to go down. Tensions are running at an all-time high and everyone is doing their best to keep up appearances. But the tenuous bonds between everyone could snap at any moment. The Colonel lets the group know that Cal, Julian, and Sara are Silver but also trusted allies. #NotAllSilvers It’s not an easy pill for several to swallow but who can say no to helping 5,000 teens?
Then we have to switch gears and attend a funeral at Tuck’s make-shift funeral. Mare, clueless as ever, is mad at Farley for not volunteering for the mission and they are back to fighting for the trauma champion. Plus, Mare is back to rationalizing murder to save others. How quickly the tables can turn.
Everyone goes with their groups and our rebels end up on the Blackrun as the broadcast is airing. Little do they know, they are not alone, and this flight is doomed… It’s all come down to this. Plus, you can check out Mia and I speak in complete unison.
Our references include Homestar Runner, Masterchef, Twilight, High Fidelity, Evil Dead 2, Jerry McGuire, and so many more!

This week, after arriving back in Tuck, Mare meets a set of incredibly odd twins that are very interested in her. What are their true motives though? They have an odd request that puts Mare’s “anyone can betray anyone” attitude to the test. Will she risk the safety of all those she has rescued?
References include Star Wars, dumb medicine commercials, Mad Men, Frozen, And1, The Hunger Games, and so many more. It’s a great discussion on betrayal and how far Mare has come with the gang. Listen today!

Over 300 Reds, Newbloods, and Silvers are on their way out of Corros after the prison break and Mare is on a girl on a stick, twisted mission. Her “allies” are all questioning her choices. Has Mare lost her humanity? Farley is here to push her to the limits while their grief dissolves into near violence. By the time it’s all over, Mare and the Colonel will team up to strike the match that will light Norta on fire. They can’t control the burn once it starts. How far out of control will it rage?
The references are all over the place and include Scrubs, Street Fighter 2, The Hunger Games, and so many more. You won't want to miss a minute. We're all in this together!

Our references this week, as we try and find humor amongst the violence, include My Favorite Murder, pockets for women, Multiplicity, Die Hard, The Wizard of Oz, Glee, How I Met Your Mother, Mario Bros., and Hogwarts Legacy. Plus more! This is an intense chapter and we will do our best to laugh our way through it with you. .Check it out today!

This is part two of our coverage of chapter 25, and Our group has landed at the prison with Nanny disguised as Maven, ready to break in to the Corros prison. Mare has a physical reaction but has to overcome it and focus on the task at hand. Too much can go wrong for her to lose focus now. We get into the prison and things get… ummmmmm… hectic. Just listen along. We’re all in this together.
The references are great and include Dan Carlin’s brain, The Natural, Deadpool 2, and The Hunger Games (the actual games part).

This is part one of our coverage of chapter 25, we are on our way to the prison and Mare can’t muster any hope of victory or being optimistic for her crew. Everyone has their own pre-battle rituals and Mare’s is being a downer. Nanny uses her ability to “turn in to” Maven and Mare is SHOOKETH! This plan is RISKY! It’s all coming to a head. Will this plan work or will they all crash and burn?
We go deep into this chapter and the references include Game of Thrones, the obvious Taylor Swift, Meredith Brooks, The Walking Dead, Top Gun, How I Met Your Mother, and more. You won’t want to miss a minute!!

In this chapter, Mare and Cameron are just generally being teen girls, kinking the planning of the Corros prison break. Cal gets followed by kids everywhere he goes, and it’s totally adorable. Mare comes across Shade and Farley sneaking away, but it goes totally over her head as to why. Everyone in the Notch is on edge and the drama is JUICY. Things are really ramping up before all hell breaks loose at the prison.
Our references are all over the place and include Bring It On, How I Met Your Mother, Jurassic Park, Game of Throne, Taylor Swift, The Hunger Games. This is a FANTASTIC discussion about the relationships in this book and how secrets and miscommunication can have disastrous consequences.

This week, in Chapter 23, the “adults” have gathered for a very important meeting that definitely couldn’t have been an email. There’s a plan to put together and Mare needs all the bodies and abilities that she can get. Kilorn might even be able to go this time! Cameron “meets” the group and we debate the value of Wikipedia as a source.
The references are BANANAS! Frozen, John Calipari in a living room, Harry Potter, Christmas Vacation, Star Wars, Wednesday, and more. You won’t want to miss a moment!

This week, we meet the Ultimate Party Pooper, Cameron, a character with an awesome power that just so happens to be attached to her crappy personality. We discuss the history of Norta and try to figure out where all these strange accents come from while we also marvel at Shade’s expert military hold. If you thought Mare was a party pooper, you haven’t seen anything yet!
The references include the obvious Taylor Swift( this time it’s Mia’s B-day tickets), Phineas and Ferb, our boys’ black belt martial arts background, Stranger Things (of course), Real Housewives, Cocaine Bear, The Walking Dead, and Major League Baseball managers arguing with umpires. And that’s not all! Listen today!

In Part 2 of our discussion on Chapter 20 of Glass Sword, we see Mare being extra stubborn. It’s just a taste of things to come. Our gang is landing for a mission and Mare is tired of people telling her things. I think she is just plain tired. Let’s just say that communication isn’t her strong suit. There’s also a very elaborate plan involving Gareth and Nanny that you have to hear to believe. All of this culminates in a burnt out city and a brand new, very unusual stranger.
Our references are all over the place from Wednesday to Armageddon and Phineas and Ferb to Independence Day, Christmas Vacation, My Name is Earl, Birdemic, and Honeymoon in Vegas. You won’t want to miss a minute. Check it out today!

In our first bonus episode, Mia and Beth discuss Taylor Swift’s 1989 and Midnights albums as we put them against each other, track by track, this or that style. We get all the way to Wildest Dreams vs Bejewled. It’s a great conversation that Swifties won’t want to miss!
Mare and Cal have began sharing a bed chamber. It is all the hot goss at the Notch. Maven is always one step ahead but never sets anything to snare Mare for long. Maven is playing heavy games and Mare can’t tell anyone about what she really knows. Kilorn is giving Mare the major cold shoulder when Mare catches him taking reading lessons with Ketha. Mare finds out about a new military strategy that Maven is enacting and it is very, very dark.
Not a ton of references but they are good ones! Maraven shippers, An American Tail, Taylor Swift, the Star Wars prequels, The Hunger Games, True Crime Obsessed, and The Revenant.

3 days of hunting have gone by with finding nothing but dead Newbloods and Mare is a super bummer about it. What else is new, right? We meet some of the Newbloods that were recruited while Mare was unconscious or plot devices as I call them. Everything leads up to several of our group making a very harrowing trip in to a town only to be met with a waking nightmare.
The references are great! We touch on our trip to Disney World, Airplane, Heroes, and Top Gun. Listen today!

Mare is coming back to her senses after waking up from her “coma” and kissing Cal. Good ole Kilorn is there to help her pick up the pieces like no one else can. Truth bombs abound! Plus, we get a montage of newblood saving and Maven dodging. They know he’s out there and hunting them and they can’t hide anymore. We wrap up with some adorable moments back at home base. This episode runs the gamut of emotions and “mutant” franchises (just check out the references list!)
We hit Cobra Kai, The Wedding Singer, Homestar Runner, X-Men, Heroes, Frozen, The Haunting of Hill House, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, Twilight, Survivor, The Hunger Games, and of course, Taylor Swift. It’s a fascinating conversation that you won’t want to miss a moment of. Listen today!

Mare wakes up after being ambushed by Maven and is super confused and wants answers. So much has happened and Mare has been through the ringer. How will they proceed from here and what was that machine?? Mare is coming completely unglued. Will she come back from the edge or did Maven push her too far?
Lots of references today including Harry Potter, Hamilton, Letterkenny, NCAA basketball, Stranger Things, Big Hero 6, Inside Out, and of course, Taylor Swift. It’s a GREAT discussion this week. Listen today!

This week, our group has just found Wolliver dead and everyone is playing the blame game. Especially Mare, who of course blames herself. Cal is the only cooler head, which is good because stuff is about to go REAL sideways, REAL fast. Lots of chapters in this series are gamechangers but this one is takes everything for Mare and turns it upside down.
Also, we break down Mare and Maven’s relationship up until this point and discuss some new fancasting ideas. Our references include Star Wars, Swifties, Timothee Chalamet, Psych, The Godfather, Ted, Stranger Things, Locke and Key, and Survivor. It’s a great discussion. Check it out today and stay tuned to the end for a little thank you note!

In part 2, we’re continuing our discussion of chapter 15. Mare, Cal, and Farley break into the Security Center to try and get to the newblood records. It’s time to go big or go home. This chapter is literally on fire.
The references this week are all over the map. They include Into The Badlands, Harry Potter, Spongebob, Dancing With The Stars, shopping with me at the mall, Homestar Runner, Super Mario World, Angry Birds, and Psych. We might get a little distracted but it’s ok. This chapter could use a little laughter.

Unfortunately, we had some technical difficulties with episode 12 and ultimately the file got corrupted and we weren’t able to publish it. I really appreciate everyone’s patience while we tried to get it worked out.
BUT
This week we are giving you chapter 15 in 2 parts. Our conversation was so great that we got halfway through the chapter and realized we were an hour in so we decided to split it in to 2 episodes so we don’t have to truncate our discussion.
In part 1, our gang has to sneak through Harbor Bay to the Security Center where they SHOULD rendezvous with Shade and get to the information center where they can get addresses and information on the newbloods. They are, once again, completely reliant on Cal. But Cal is fighting his own demons in his old stomping ground. Then it’s time to go scorched earth.
Our hilarious references include Maraven shippers, 90’s boy bands, the obligatory Taylor Swift, our stanning Timothee Chalamet as Maven, The game, The Little Mermaid, my second favorite TikTok that features an adorable toddler, The Goldbergs, Shazam, the incredible tabletop game Nemesis, Grimm, Fantastic Beasts, Cocaine Bear, My Favorite Murder, and more! It really is great stuff.

In episode 11, our gang heads into Harbor Bay on their most dangerous mission yet. Mare can apparently feel batteries and what type they are now?? Interesting… We meet some new Guard members but as usual, not all is as it seems. Who is Egan and can they all trust Crance?
Our references include Taylor Swift (of course), Eminem, The Little Mermaid, Scrubs, Mike Tyson’s Punch Out, Cobra Kai, Jurassic World, Kevin Can F Himself, RiffTrax, and more. Plus, Mia cracks herself up to the point of tears at one time. It’s definitely one for the record books!

This week, Mare is literally obsessing over Maven and seeing him everywhere she goes in this “new world” where she and Cal are terrorists. Cal and Nix square up and Cal has to face the truth. Mare cannot stop with the “what-ifs” and distracting herself from their mission. Nix and Kilorn bond, and Mare finds it “fishy.” We find out that Farley sleeps with not one, but two guns on her. Things are serious in this world at war.
The Taylor Swift and Grimm references abound this week and we have lots of laughs. There’s also Game of Thrones, Obsessed with Disappeared lexicon, Scrubs, the Hunger Games, Masterchef, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, and Twilight! It’s great conversation to help get through this trip as we see Nix fly for the first time. You won’t want to miss a minute!

In episode 11, our group lands near Coraunt and sets off to find Nix Marsten, whom we are all too eager to just call “him.” Cal’s privilege is showing during a trek through the woods and what is up Shade and Farley? Then, once we find Nix, things take a turn quickly. Very quickly. Plus, we have the debate about past Red and Silver blood mixing again.
Our conversation is so great that we don’t get many references in but we do have a lot to the movie Unbreakable (you’ll find out why) and also some for Survivor, The Lost World, and The Boys. This is an action packed chapter and you won’t want to miss a minute! Check it out today!

In this week’s episode, our rebels are flying through the air with the greatest of ease and Mare is finding out so much about how the world underneath everything she has known is nothing she could have imagined.
The conversation this week is awesome! So many references: : Star Wars (obviously), Taylor Swift, Into the Badlands, Brooklyn 99, My Favorite Murder lexicon (again), Nature Valley granola bars, Kung Pow: Enter the Fist, Zootopia, Obsessed with Disappeared lexicon, Heroes, AND MORE! In this week’s episode, we catch up with our group of rebels as they are escaping from Tuck to search for newbloods and Cal is the only hope they have. Good thing he knows how to pilot a Blackrun. Will they make it out and on to their first destination on the list? What will be there if they do?
This week is CHOCKFUL of references and great discussion. We tell Mia about Heroes (which she is watching now) and discuss internet shippers again. There’s also mention of Wings, The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window, Scooby Doo, Dr. Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters, Stranger Things (of course), Hercules, The Hunger Games, Game of Thrones, The Twilight series, and Once Upon a Time. WHEW! You are not going to want to miss this. Check it out today!

This week, the hits just keep coming for Mare. The Little Lightning Girl clearly likes prisons and has the worst taste in men. She and Captain Beefcake (Cal) find themselves in a yet another no-win situation. Plus, we add 2 more to the flinch count!
In the discussion this week, we finally touch on the shippers. MareCal vs MarAven! The references go from Brooklyn 99, Firefly, and Star Wars to Glee and Encanto. Don’t forget Stranger Things! It’s summer of 2022, the whole world is obsessed. Don’t miss a single minute of the fun!

Mare and Kilorn have a mission to carry out and Mare is chomping at the bit to check on Cal. It’s a simple in and out mission, right? Right?? We find out A LOT about the Colonel but it also brings up so many more questions.
References this week include My Favorite Murder lexicon, Deep Blue Sea, Harry Potter, Encanto, Cobra Kai, Spongebob, Jaws, Stranger Things, The X-Files, Barenaked Ladies, Bohemian Rhapsody, and more. Strangely, no Taylor Swift this week. But we do add to the flinch count A BUNCH! You won't want to miss a minute! Listen today!

This week’s episode shows us the ins and outs of Tuck and let’s just say, Mare is unimpressed. But at least her family is here. She’s definitely happy about that but she’s laser focused on finding Cal and finding out why the Lakelanders are here. Then a run-in with the Colonel throws everything in to overdrive.
The conversation is GREAT in this episode with references to everything from 80’s Jello and Tiger King to Clueless and The Boys with Ed Sheeran and another Professor Xavier’s School for Extraordinary Children thrown in for good measure. It is a laugh riot. Check it out today!

Fam, it has taken this long but (for once) MARE KEEPS HER MOUTH SHUT! Things are changing on an hourly basis and Mare is just trying to keep up. She thinks she’s maintaining control but she has no idea. The Scarlet Guard is bigger than she could have imagined and, despite herself, she starts to feel a little hopeful.
The 80’s adjacent references abound in this one since we were watching Season 4 of Stranger Things the week we recorded. We were primed for the 80s! We touch on, of course, Stranger Things, Wonder Woman, Ferris Bueller, Cobra Kai, and then modern favorites like Encanto, Jessica Jones, and Harry Potter. This one is an instant classic so don’t miss it!

We are back with Episode 2 of Season 2 and boy is Mare hangry. Pity parties and claustrophobia abound but hold on to your butts because she’s got impostor syndrome and narcissism all at the same time.
There’s a lot of Stranger Things references in this one as well as Christmas vacation, and even some dad jokes, AND MORE. You won’t want to miss a minute!!

Season 2 is here, fam! We open the season with chapters 1 & 2 of Glass Sword, the second in the Red Queen series. Unfortunately, we go dark right out of the gate. Mare and Cal get no breaks after being rescued from the Bowl of Bones. Even though they are with the Scarlet Guard, things aren’t always what they seem….
Our conversation hits the ground running with references to Harry Potter, Hunger Games, Wonder Woman, Firestarter, Professor Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters, The Other Guys, Underwater, and so much more! We definitely didn’t miss a beat between seasons 1 and 2. Check it out today!

On this week’s bonus episode, we take a look at all of the characters we’ve met so far in the series. Mare, Maven, Cal, Elara, etc. All the big ones are covered here. There’s still plenty of references (Game of Thrones, Hunger Games, Star Wars, and Little House on the Prairie just to name a few) but we have a really great discussion about the characters, their personality traits, and how they interact with each other. It’s the perfect set up to our 2 PART SEASON FINALE! Yes, you read that right. The Season 1 finale will be a 2 parter. We had so much fun going through actors and actresses that we decided to split it up instead of condensing it down. You guys don’t mind right? Yeah, us either. :)

We have finally come to the end of the book one in the series Red Queen! Mare and Cal must face the music in the Bowl of Bone and Maven is there to witness it all. With Arven silencing her and Cal’s limited battle options, things are looking very grave. Of course, Mare is her usual optimistic self (eye roll) and Cal is low on big ideas. It will all come to a stunning, shocking conclusion! We get so lost in conversation that we’re low on references this week but we did get in a few from X-Men and Game of Thrones in. We’re so happy you’ve been on this journey will us and are excited to finally be here at the end of the first book!

Next week starts our bonus content that wraps up Season 1. We had so much fun making it and we can’t wait to share it with you. Thank you for listening!
This week’s episode is all about exposition, exposition, exposition. The true origins and motive of Elara and Maven’s actions are revealed while sealing Cal and Mare’s fate. Mare’s pity party skills are fire and fully on display as she confronted with the silent stone walls of the dungeons under the Bowl of Bones. We are hurtling towards the season finale and this chapter is the last building block before the next chapter and epilogue wrap up this section of our story and set us up for the next book in the series. The references are fully on display as well including Brooklyn 99, Forrest Gump, and of course the obligatory Taylor Swift. We are so happy you’ve been on this journey with us and we can’t wait to continue it with you! Grab some ice cream and come along with final stretch of this book!

For Episode 17, we switch things up a little. This week, we are discussing Chapter 26 more in depth and it’s effects on the characters and story. This episode may have a little different feel and flow from our regular episodes since it is purely conversational and not as linear as a normal episode. You guys will love it!
Don’t worry, there’s still plenty of references, especially to other great series with plot twists like Mr. Robot and the Good Place. We discuss this twist vs others in YA series’ and the trust issues these books can give you. So come along with us as we break down the book so far in the wake of Maven’s betrayal.
Find us on social media! On Instagram, we are @readingwiththerockefellers, our YouTube channel is Reading With The Rockefellers, and you can email fan art, dream casting ideas, and stories about the series and your love for it to readingwiththerockefellers@gmail.com. We’ll be back next week with Chapter 27 and are one step closer to finishing Season 1!
I do apologize for the background noise. We had a lot of notes we were shuffling through during recording.
It’s all come down to this y’all. Episode 16. The infamous chapter 26. We’ve had many game changing chapters but this one takes the cake. Elara and Maven reveal their true intentions and the unimaginable happens. Anyone can betray anyone is on full display in this episode. The meaning of traitor is bent and twisted and no one will ever be the same.
Our conversation begins with us questioning what blood sounds like and ends with who will go to the Bowl of Bones. We reference everything from The Wizard of Oz to Homestar Runner while trying to unpack this chapter. With quotes like “let’s get depressing” and “it’s brain bending time”, this episode will definitely blow your mind. There’s so much to talk about that our discussion on chapter 26 will continue next week. We can’t wait for you to join us.
Fan art this week is a little different. Instead of an artistic rendering, we are using a meme. One of my favorite Red Queen memes. Creator credit to @imjulia-andilikecats. Check out her Instagram at the link above, our Instagram @readingwiththeRockefellers, or on our fan art page at www.readingwiththerockefellers.com.
Are you a Red Queen fan artist or fan fic writer? Do you have a story about how the series has affected you or your favorite ship of the series? Email us at readingwiththerockefellers@gmail.com. Also, email or comment on our Instagram with your dream casting choices for the upcoming Peacock series. We’ll be doing our fan casting episode soon! Thank you for listening!
This week, the time has come for Mare, Maven, Farley, and the others of the Scarlet Guard to make their stand. They place all their hope in Cal and rise Red as the dawn literally and figuratively. Will Cal choose Mare and they succeed in getting the king to withdraw the Measures or will Cal stay loyal to his country, ruining their whole plan and exposing the whole Guard to war?
Come along with us as we find out with references to Hunger Games, Phineas and Ferb, the Delirium series, Star Wars, Thunderdome, Cheers, at least 1 Taylor Swift, Letterkenny, Mythbusters, and Psych. We discuss how much Mare loooves the drama and whether or not it’s a good time to make out when people have guns drawn on you and you’re in your jammies. You won’t want to miss one hilarious, chaos filled minute.
Our fan art this week is a breathtaking piece by @isabellamhsmith on Instagram. It would be the perfect alternate book cover. We are obsessed! Be sure and check it out. Thank you @isabellamhsmith so much for letting us feature your work!

In episode 14, we see the fallout of the Measures and how life has changed for Reds in this new Norta. Mare, however, cannot wait to tell someone about the horking list! She could write a musical about it! She and Maven make contact with Farley in the most unusual way yet and travel to a place where Maven thinks they are facing imminent death. Instead, they are introduced to a new world they never dreamed existed and hatch a plan to force the king to reverse the Measures, with Cal’s secret devotion to Mare as the key. It’s the biggest risk yet but Maven is sure they will be victorious.
Our conversation is chock full o’ references this week including Finding Dory, Game of Thrones, Mia’s theater costumes, Wanda Vision, The Invention of Lying, Terminator 2, Harry Potter, Owen Wilson, Chasing Amy, Spongebob, The South Park movie, Brooklyn 99, the obligatory Taylor Swift, Scrubs, WWE, and Ted Lasso (WHEW that’s a lot). We discuss a possible link between Big Pharma and new bloods, more fan fic or spin off ideas, how crappy life in the Stilts is and Kilorn’s place in the friendzone. We’ve really outdone ourselves this week!
Our fan art this week is a breathtaking piece by @wantsgmarie on Instagram. It’s one of my favorite pictures of Mare so far. Thank you so much for letting us feature your work. Y’all, there’s no way around it: this chapter is rough. Mare finally is forced to “earn her keep” and do her first broadcast. The results are heartbreaking and game changing. Mare quickly realizes that the Silvers are crueler than she could have ever imagined. Her only respite from the horror and guilt she feels is the gift Julian left for her at the palace. Even though the future seems the bleakest it’s been since Mare’s fall into the Queenstrial, there is a hope for the future she never saw coming.
There’s not a lot of references in this episode but we do have some AMAZING discussion about what the world looks like under these new measures and I pitch a great idea for a spin off series or fan fic. Olivia provides some comic relief around minute 17 by running on her wheel. But there’s still no getting around the fact that the classist and racist overtones in this chapter are similar to the ones that dominated the US up through the mid to late 60s and some that continue today. Join our discussion and shoot us an email with your thoughts and theories today! Thank you for listening!
Our fan artist this week is @mar_de_inverno on Instagram. It’s a throwback post. The first she ever did but it is fantastic! Audio disclaimer: other than Olivia running in the background, there are a few other instances of background noise. We sincerely apologize. Life happens even during recording sessions, I guess. 😊
Mare’s world is chaos after the Sun Shooting, or Shooting Ball as we think it should be called, and it’s now time to leave Summerton and head back to Archeon. But Mare has a plan first, and she needs Julian’s help. A drunk Julian goes along but they become suspects quickly so the palace emptying out is the best thing for everyone. Unfortunately, the boat ride to Archeon is the stuff Mare’s nightmares are made of and by the time they get home, she has a new resolve to keep up the fight.
There’s a lot of to unpack in these chapters and we do it while referencing Screen Rant, Harry Potter, Dateline, Star Wars, the obligatory Taylor Swift, Homestar Runner, Deadpool, Hamlet, and Gladiator. We’re just doing our best to find some humor in what can only be described as the most depressing place in the history of the world.
Thank you so much to @eduarda.n.r for your amazing art this week. Your illustration of Mare is awesome and your other work is so fun and quirky. We appreciate you letting us feature you this week! Y’all, hold on to your butts. This episode is where it gets real real. The Parting Ball is finally here and we’re talking everything from Elara and Maven’s co-dependent relationship, some major Mare guilt, and whether or not Cal is really an idiot. For the people keeping count of the flinches at home, get ready to take several off the count because even though this chapter is action packed, our characters manage to keep most of their cool on the outside.
Listen along for references to Mommy Dead and Dearest, Phineas and Ferb, the Office, Ghostbusters, and more. Find out how Greg really feels about Farley and if 3+8 can equal 10. It’s a nailbiter for sure.
Thank you so much to @clariline_art for your amazing art this week. Your illustrations are amazing and we are honored to feature your work. Check out her Instagram at the link above, our Instagram @readingwiththeRockefellers, or on our fan art page at www.readingwiththerockefellers.com.

Episode 10 is a spiderweb! Mare and Evangeline duel and Maven and Julian throw shade. Elara puts Mare in her place, while Cal finds inspiration in Mare then hopes to return the favor. While all this is going on, Mare is finding herself torn between fantasy and reality.
The conversation goes from Beth being real mad to Mare to calling her a beautiful little tropical fish. We discuss YA tropes and the role of romance in this book. Plus all the deep cut pop culture references you love like Footloose, Scrubs, and of course, Taylor Swift.
Join us for Beats by Cal and Mare just generally being a sassy 17 year old girl in a world where anyone can betray anyone.

In this week’s episode, Mare finds herself in a situation she never thought she’d be in with Maven. The Scarlet Guard reveal themselves and we learn about the face of their glorious revolution, sacrifice, and the price of real change. Over in training, we see both Cal and Maven duel. It is an epic display of Swolitiude. Come along on the ride with the Little Prince, the Little Lightning Girl, and Swolness Personified. Get read, everything is about to change.
In this week’s episode, Mare starts training with the Silver high house teens and Evangeline is determined to make it a living hell for her. Lessons with Julian take a dark and twisted turn and Mare learns the palace, as well as her new ability, hold more secrets than she ever imagined.
We also review the first 15 chapters of Red Queen, where we get lots of FORESHADOWING, find out SwolCal never skips leg day, tell Mare to SSDGM, and get a gem of a nickname: Thicc McPrinceface. Plus, our 14 year daughter/ co-host/ third child explains teenagers to us. It’s a can’t miss moment!!

In episode 7, take a trip home to the Stilts. We get a glimpse of Mare’s first experience motorcycles and garage doors, into home life with the Barrows, get terrible news from the war front, and Mare ups the ante with a decision that changes the course of everything. There is nowhere for her to hide now.
Join us for this roller coaster of a chapter with Mare freak outs, bad Boston accents, and so much SwolCal.

In episode 6, Mare begins “school” at the palace and is not happy about it, dines with the enemy at almost every meal, and meets the amazing Julian (who vows to never lie to her). Can she believe him? Will Elara, Evangeline, and the other Queenstrial girls kill her first? All this and the intriguing yet borderline ridiculous Lady Blonos. Join us as we navigate what Mare thinks will be mundane but turns out to be anything but. Also, in home recording studio news, our Dumbo Rats (Meredith and Olivia) make a cameo in the background when our microphones picked them up fighting around 36 minutes.
