Emily Fairweather is this week's guest on betweentheLions. Besides being a full-time music teacher, Emily is also the founder and director of "Flourish" a school transition program that runs locally in Sandringham, Bayside. The program covers transition from year 6 to high school, a mentoring program for year 7 and junior leaders program for years 7-12
Emily shares with us some great insights into making the transition into high school and gives us the details of the program.
I am sure that you, like me, will be blown away by this impressive young woman and the wonderful program that she has created - and, note, is run by volunteers!

Lyn also chats talks about her rise, from being a reluctant Lion, frequently mistaken for a Rotary Club member, to becoming 1st Vice District Governor and what she is most passionate about these days - diverse leadership.

This is the first of a 3-part series focusing on managing change. My guest on the show is District Governor 201V5, Graham Bryant. Graham's theme this year is “Sustain our Service” a year where he encourages us all to work in harmony in line with our ethics within and outside of our clubs and embrace the new Global Membership Approach to grow our membership base. Graham and I chat about how change is necessary in order to grow, discuss how change need not be utterly transformational and painful but rather an ongoing evolution adapting to changing circumstances. Today I chatted with Melinda Shelley, whose charity, 123Read2Me, has given away more than million books to children across Australia. Melinda shares how she has come to understand that reading to children is so important because it can change their lives and that can change the world.
She also updates us on the progress that the charity has made in the past year and what they are hoping to achieve in the near future.

In this, the 3rd episode (and last, for now) of our series focusing on what's happening at the local level to protect and improve the environment, we talk to Jeff Angel, CEO of the Boomerang Alliance about waste to energy incinerator project that our council together with other councils, is proposing as a solution to our landfill problem, plastic free spaces and the new cash for container scheme about to be introduced this year.
Jeff is an environmentalist and business strategist . He is currently the executive director at Boomerang Alliance, Total Environment Center and Director of CitizenBlue Ltd. He has been engaged in environmental protection for more than 35 years.

It was a pleasure chatting to Bayside's Councillor for Beckett Ward, Clarke Martin about what it takes to be a Councillor, about his deep commitment to the environment and Beaumaris' built heritage, his desire to ensure our local schools are well equipped to excel despite budget pressures and the concern he feel about waste management in Beckett ward, and how he thinks we can approach the challenges we are facing in 2023.
We are continuing with our local focus in our interview with Geoffrey Goode, the secretary of the Beaumaris Conservation Society. The Beaumaris Conservation society has a long (starting back in 1953) and illustrious history fighting for conservation values in Beaumaris. As you will hear from Geoffrey, they have fought successfully to preserve Point and Coral avenue in Beaumaris, to stop the expansion of the motor yacht squadron into a mega-marina and even the installation of a water-park and aquarium on the table rocks. They currently focusing on strengthening the vegetation overlay protection scheme and growing the register of trees of significance in Beaumaris. Motor Yacht Squadron marina proposal entailed accommodation of power boats up to 18 metres long, rather than the 6 metres mentioned.
We talk to Deb Brook the founder of Bayside Community Emergency Relief (BCER). Deb has been involved in charitable organizations all her life and BCER got started as a Facebook group during the bushfires. The group was so successful that Deb was urged to continue with her model of organising more formally as a registered charity. The results is the BCER as it is today - as Deb herself says "small but mighty" - a highly successful, incredibly hard working charity doing amazing things in our community. You will notice (especially on video) that we had a few technical issues but I hope it won't distract from the interview.

This is the first episode for 2022. We are off off to a rather late start, so to make up for it we have not one but tow guests for this episode, Nick Liemandt and Glenys Leonie Neeham, to discuss what is a favourite among Lions Clubs - the Australian Lions Hearing Dogs. ALHD trains and places Hearing Assistance Dogs with deaf, or hard of hearing, people all around Australia. Nick started back in 2018 with the ALHD as a Cadet Trainer. In addition to being part of the training team, he also conducts the Public Access Tests for the Active South Australian Lions Hearing Dogs. Glenys has been a member of Carnegie Lions Club 25 years and chairman Australian Lions Hearing Dogs for District 201v5 the last 5 of those years.
