Angela Montalvo, one of the Tri co-chairs of the Nebraska Poor People's Campaign Coordinating Committee, joins me today to share her story about how she became involved with the Poor People's Campaign and her participation in civil disobedience. She also discusses Moral Monday, a Poor People's event at the capitol on April 17th at noon that will raise awareness among elected officials about poverty, systemic racism, militarism, ecological devastation, and denial of healthcare in our state. She wants people to come out and use their voices to tell our elected officials to stop trying to legislate hate, stop taking away human rights and voting rights and focus on helping hurting people in our state.
Angela Montalvo is a U.S. Army veteran and Arabic linguist who graduated from the Defense Language Institute - Foreign Language Center at the Presidio of Monterey, CA. After leaving the military, Angela continued her education and nearly completed a degree in Applied Linguistics from the University of Arizona Global Campus. After being forced to quit school due to G.I. Bill benefits expiring, Angela began organizing with the Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival. She has been Tri-Chair of the Nebraska Poor People’s Campaign Coordinating Committee since 2021, organizing many actions in Nebraska and participating in civil disobedience with the national Poor People’s Campaign. She also spoke at the Mass Poor People’s & Low-Wage Workers’ Assembly on June 18, 2022, in Washington, DC.

Angie Philips is a community organizer and human rights advocate in Nebraska. Born and raised in western rural Nebraska, Angie currently resides in Omaha with her husband and 3 kids. She was galvanized into action during the 2016 elections and has since helped organize numerous marches, rallies, and both humanitarian and political actions. In 2020, Angie placed second in an overcrowded democratic primary for the U.S. Senate where she proudly campaigned as a humanist and intersectional feminist. Angie’s activism currently centers around the Nebraska Progressive Legislative Study Group which she founded with friends in 2018. Today I am joined by Robin Richards. Robin received her bachelor's degree from the University of Nebraska at Omaha where she majored in Education, English and Music. She then went on to become certified in Working with Disable Populations through Colorado State and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion through Cornell University. In December of 2022 she will graduate with a Master's Degree in Public Policy from Colorado State University. Robin Richards has been employed by Omaha Performing Arts, the Nebraska Arts Council, and the National Endowment for the Arts.
In 2019 she joined the Ralston Public School's Board of Education and proudly serves as their Vice President. Robin feels it is an honor to give back to the educators who helped raise her and will bring the same passion, honesty, and integrity to her role in the legislature. Robin and her husband, Shane, are proud to be a part of the Ralston/Millard area because her family has been a part of these communities spanning as far back as the 1950's.

Jeff Fortenberry previously held this seat, but he officially resigned on March 31st due to his conviction for three federal felonies for lying to the FBI about illegal campaign donations. As a result, GOP Senator Mike Flood of Norfolk faced Patty for a special election to seat the remainder of Jeff Fortenberry's term until January of this year. Patty only lost to Flood by a 53% to 47% margin. In other words, she crushed it! This was the closest election for a democratic candidate in this district since 1974. On today's episode, I talk to the chair of the Secular Democrats of Nebraska, Rachele Walter. The mission of the Secular Democrats of Nebraska is to advocate for secular governance, promote respect and inclusion of non-religious Americans, and mobilize non-religious voters in Nebraska.
Rachele is a secular activist living in Lincoln Nebraska. She is also the President of Lincoln Atheists and the Director for American Atheists-Nebraska. She has been involved in politics for over 35 years. Besides her secular work, she also fosters dogs for a local animal rescue and has helped more than 25 animals find their FURever homes, and has adopted 3 chihuahuas and 3 long hair cats.
