Last episode, I mentioned I would get meaningful discussion from a horror movie...Hellraiser is the last horror movie I watched, so let's just be adults about this! In this discussion, I delve into what BDSM is, who are the people most attracted to it, the stigmas surrounding it, and some possible reasons why people enjoy inflicting and receiving pain. It was all new to me!
Perhaps my most controversial episode so far? Today I decided to outline why I believe that society is still blatantly unaware of mental health and the true extent of the pain some of us go through with mental health issues. The futility of utilizing labels and vague symptoms to quantify the difficulties people go through is discussed. While none of us can expect to relate to symptoms of mental disorders or conditions we do not have, it truly is baffling how most of us cannot relate to another's pain simply because little effort has been made in awareness campaigns to talk about the feelings and emotions of the sufferer. I also get a little personal and talk about my own experiences with anxiety and why I believe most people still are not aware of what it involves and how it impacts someone's life!
While I don't mean to come across as offensive, I understand that a lot of people who have been involved in mental health awareness in the past (as have I) may react strongly to this episode. That being said, there are stark limitations in the current approach that I believe cannot be ignored.
In this episode, we look at Good Will Hunting and discuss the giant pitfalls of having high intelligence. The topics of neurodiversity and the one-in-a-million savant syndrome is brought into light, as well as why highly intelligent people often struggle to find success or appreciation. Proudly presented by a monkey :)
The BTK Killer, The Nightstalker, Son of Sam... these are just three among hundreds of nicknames given to violent murderous individuals who caused chaos during their reigns of terror. But why exactly did they receive the attention they did? This episode attempts to provide reasons why heinous human beings who created havoc in their wake garnered the adoration and infamy they did! From obsessed fans and curious ordinary folks to irresponsible media, its all discussed here!
Human beings often understand the idea of temptation through religious lenses, but psychological research has pinpointed parts of the brain involved in avoiding enticing things and resisting the urge to indulge! This episode takes a look at the idea of what temptation really is, why it's not all that scary, and the consequences of being tempt-free.
Blade Runner offers the opportunity to explore the ethics of murder! What constitutes murder? What circumstances extenuate killing? Can murder be a viable option in some instances? And is pacifism the a viable option in today's world? Its all discussed in today's episode!
Here we talk about fathers and the value they provide in terms of parenting. The difficulties men face from society to become stay-at-home dads is discussed, the negative effects of gender roles in family structures, and how early scientific research into child development failed mothers and fathers alike.
In this episode, we use "Her" to explore how society is trending towards building AI bots that can maintain platonic and romantic relationships with humans! The how and why is discussed, the strangeness of it all, and the importance of human connection is reflected upon.
This episode (number 1!) explores the movie Raging Bull, a sordid story about a tortured boxer who struggles with mental health issues and destroys his life, only to reclaim it back after many decades.
