Each year hail damages homes, cars, yards…and crops. Major storms can destroy crops and even minor hail events can leave surviving fields more susceptible to disease and pests. Justin McMechan is an assistant professor of entomology at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and also a graduate of UNL’s Doctor of Plant Health program. In Nebraska, ag land values are up about 14 percent over last year, mirroring a nationwide rise in ag real estate prices. Nebraska is home to the Sandhills, one of the largest intact grassland landscapes in the world. The Sandhills, which cover more than 19,000 square miles, support some 500,000 cattle. University of Nebraska-Lincoln researchers are working with ranchers to better understand the challenges and opportunities of land management in this unique, important ecosystem. Dan Uden, an assistant professor in UNL’s School of Natural Resources, joins us. Dan, tell us a little bit about how the university is working with ranchers.
Cover crops are planted with an eye toward supplying nutrients to soils, mitigating the erosion of those soils, and limiting the leaching of nitrate into groundwater. Though the planting of cover crops has risen sharply in recent years, many farmers have yet to utilize them. Our guest today, Nebraska Extension’s Katja Koehler-Cole, joins us. America’s farmers are constantly trying to improve the efficiency and profitability of their operations. Linda, could you begin by sharing about the pressures rural parents face when it comes to childcare?
Farmers saw high input costs in 2022. The Center for Ag Profitability in the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s department of ag economics recent released its annual farm production costs budget, and farmers will again face high costs in 2023. UNL’s Glennis McClure joins us to discuss those costs, as wells as steps farmers can take to mitigate them.
University of Nebraska–Lincoln researchers seek to understand wild turkey populations across Nebraska, including survival and harvest rates and resource selection. A new five-year study, funded by a $1.8 million grant from the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, is a collaboration among Nebraska U., the Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit and the University of Georgia. Characteristics of hard red winter wheat can vary from variety from variety, and some are higher quality and better suited for milling and baking than others. In these times of interrupted supply chains and rising nitrogen prices, precision techniques for the application of fertilizer to crops is increasingly important. Jackson Stansell is a Ph.D. student in agricultural engineering at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln where he recently completed his master’s program. His master’s research focused on using crop canopy image data to apply nitrogen fertilizer more efficiently. To scale up the technology he’s started a business, Sentinel Fertigation, and testing through the Nebraska On-Farm Research Network has confirmed the system works and is already saving farmers money.
