In this episode I talk with world renowned mastering engineer Bob Katz. Mr Katz has been the mastering engineer for three Grammy award winning albums. His accomplishments include a well regarded book in its third edition on Mastering techniques called "Mastering Audio The Art And The Science" and another book called "iTunes Music Mastering High Resolution Audio Delivery, Produce Great Sounding Music With Mastered For iTunes". Bob is credited with developing new audio technologies including the K-system of mastering and K-surround which is a patented process that adds spacial realism to a mix.Bob has extensive experience in audio recording and mastering and is still an active mastering engineer who can be reached through his website at www.digido.com (http://www.digido.com)

In this show I had the pleasure of speaking with Kim Cameron. Kim talks about some of the things she is presently involved with and future plans. Side FX and Kim Cameron (http://www.sidefxband.net/) are a high energy chart- topping dance band whose music is played in 2000+ radio stations across the US.
Kim’s most recent release “Lets Fall In Love”(May 2014) is already being played across many major radio markets in the US.Many of her previous singles have placed high on multiple music charts across the US. ” Not Into You” was a top 40 mainstream/spotlight track on All Access. The recent premier of the music video ( Not Into You- A Little Bit In Love) via Youtube garnered over a million views in the first week of release!
Kim recently performed the national anthem for the NFL New York Giants vs. Pittsburgh Steelers game on Saturday August 9th, 2014 at Metlife Stadium in East Rutherford US
On Sept 19,2014 at 4pm Kim will appear on CBS’s Lincoln Nebraska TV station 10/11 KOLN-KGIN just in time for big red football. She will also be making her debut appearance in Music City for the Nashville Oktoberfest on Oct 11,2014.

In this show I talk with Dave Townsend from the Seattle, WA. area. His screen name is “bitflipper” over in the Cakewalk Community area. Dave is a software engineer, plug-in lover and a technical writer for Soundbytes, a free online publication which I highly recommend.
In this show we touch on some of the finer points of DAW plug-ins.
A plug-in is simply the tools that come with most DAWs such as EQ and compression,although some DAWs such as Reason are generally closed to use of outside plug-ins.The plug-ins that came with your DAW might be all you need.Some DAWs have a more integrated approach, while others let you drag and drop at will in any order. There are many other 3rd party companies that make additional plug-ins that will work in your DAW and in some cases are a big improvements over the stock ones that came with your DAW. Fabfilter, Waves, Melda, IK multimedia are just a few of the companies who make fine 3rd party plug-ins.
I welcome special guest Larry Hansen who has played guitars for over 30 years. He shares with us some of his techniques in getting just the right recorded guitar sound. There were some technical issues in the show, but we didn’t let that stop us.

Modeled Guitars
This is part one of a series devoted to recording guitar in the home studio. Specifically, this show deals with electric guitars, and in this episode I’m giving you a tour of the Line 6 JTV 69 as a viable option compared to traditional guitars. This show will have examples of tones in that guitar.
Why use something like the Line 6 JTV compared to the standard Gibsons and Fenders? Several reasons.Many home studios are lacking on space and since the JTV series of guitars have 26 different guitar models inside one guitar body, it is a tremendous space savings. The JTV series are tough to beat in terms of sheer adaptability and versatility,not to mention the savings financially in only needing one guitar to do the job of many.
Other benefits include a clean sound right into your recording interface…none of the buzzing and humming associated with some electric guitars.Since the JTV series have acoustic models, you eliminate the need to mic up a real acoustic.
Let me just say right from the beginning, I know many guitarists are purists and already have a favorite guitar. I get it..I also have other guitars I like. For feel and playability many guitarists are never going to trade in their favorite guitar for something like the JTV 59/69/89. Not all guitarists feel this way though. Some guitarists have a favorite guitar and it’s a JTV. Players who at one time needed to carry several guitars to a gig can now carry one guitar and cover all the bases.When it comes to recording in the home studio who doesn’t want access to just about any guitar sound you can imagine?
The sounds I recorded in the show were not doctored in any way, other than amp sims and a few effects here and there. None of the guitar sounds are treated in any way, not even EQ, and I didn’t layer anything for a bigger sound. The sound is an Mp3 which also diminishes the audio quality.
I made a video that will show you how to modify the stock sounds in the Variax guitars( see the link on this post)…so the sky really is the limit when it comes to the capability available.
I only recorded audio on one channel of the video, it’s not a problem with your computer!

This is my first podcast here at Recording Hound and it has been a learning experience, and much has been accomplished.I have found ways to make the show even better next time!
This first show was low key and mostly a chat with Alan about his experiences with recording and recording equipment. We get a little nostalgic here and there in remembering how things were done once upon a time, and also delve into some of the more recent developments in studio recording and what might lay beyond the horizon,so sit back, relax and enjoy the show!
