Before the days of the internet gaining knowledge was a challenge, we had to attend school and listen to the experts on the subject. Heaven forbid we actually trot down to our local library and read an academically, peer reviewed science text. These days are gone however; now we have the knowledge of the entire world in our fingertips (and we still choose to watch cat videos). The point is, there is more noise to sift through, the problem now isn’t the ability to accumulate knowledge, it’s the ability to understand what is bs and what is the ACTUAL truth.
That is why we are here, the learners guide to the galaxy, just like you, we are also trying to sift through the madness of the internet and the world around us. We are young professionals, students, lifelong learners and it is our mission to bring light to the most engaging topics in our world today. From big data, 3D printing, green energy, world conflicts, you name it, we want to learn about it with you.

A quick Google search will begin to unravel a long string of items currently being 3D printed from a variety of materials including food. In fact, NASA wants to build a 3D printed base on the moon! But is all of this realistic? What is the truth behind 3D printing? Join us in this episode of the Learner's Guide to the Galaxy as we explore the topic of 3D printing.
Right on the heels of our debut episode about Big Data, (and all the creepiness therein) is our next topic: Your Online Self. We’ve already discussed how information from our personal lives, purchases, to our day to day routine is cultivated, interpreted, and sold to corporations in order to sell us products, and archived by governments to keep tabs on us. But what about “that thing” we do deliberately, aka our online behavior?
Well here it is, our first ever podcast. We are looking forward to bringing you along on this journey through the galaxy. In today’s episode we are chatting about Big Data. What a large, amazing, terrifying, and unbelievable topic.
Our first guest is Geoff Pond. Geoff is a professor of business at St. Lawrence College in Kingston, Ontario. He previously worked for six years as an operations analyst at Defence Research and Development Canada and holds a Ph.D. and B.Sc.Eng awarded from the University of New Brunswick. His research interests include mathematical programming, both local and global optimization algorithms, and fuzzy logic.
