As dialogues around sex education have shifted in recent years and even weeks, LGBTQ+ community members still feel left behind. Host, Colette Holcomb, sits down with Primo Lagaso Goldberg, a nonbinary and queer creative and DEI advocate, discussing their experiences in sex ed and solutions for our current system.

Calafia is yli’s statewide youth policy journal that amplifies the narratives of young people on topics and issue areas important to them and their communities.
Calafia’s past issues have focused on youth criminal justice reform, educational equity, and addressing stigmas within communities of color. Check out the latest issue titled, Systems below and contact Jarrett Ramones at jramones@yli.org for a print copy.
Calafia Fellows are selected every year from each yli office to create and edit the issue’s theme and the stories presented. They are also mentored by experienced reporters, travel to statewide and national media conferences, and learn the steps to producing a printed publication.

The concept of equal opportunity and equity doesn’t just concern a small number of people. It concerns everyone. In a world where privilege not only provides you with education and opportunity, but also time to explore your choices, to grow and understand privilege and systematic differences is to acknowledge the inequities within the systems that we have lived through. Today Calafia Fellow Katelyn Chang talks to Rubi Salazar, first generation immigrant and community activist, who witnessed first hand what it was like to be a stranger to the American education system.
