🎙️ The Hopecast with Rachael Flick

Episode 157: The Prodigal Child – Holding Out for Hope When They Are Far Away

Guest: Gary Wilkerson
Air Date: July 29, 2025

“He's saying, 'You've rejected me, but you're good. You've abandoned me, but I trust you.' It feels all over the place, but it's exactly the right place — being honest before God.”

In this raw and powerful episode, Rachael and Gary Wilkerson dive into what it means to pray with hope before the answer comes. They explore the spiritual tension of unanswered prayers—and the courage to continue worship when the breakthrough hasn’t yet arrived.

Referencing themes from the Psalms and his own journey parenting prodigal children through addiction and homelessness, Gary wrestles with heartbreak, faith, and the posture of trusting God in the silence. He shares a timeless insight taught to him by his father:

"Learn to sing the right song on the wrong side of the Red Sea."
It’s worship before deliverance; it’s faith before resolution.

This episode brings comfort to the weary intercessor, the anxious parent, and anyone standing in the gap—wondering what to do when God hasn’t moved yet.

Episode 155: Where Have All The Cops Gone? with Chris Burns (Part 1)
📅 Released: June 23, 2025

🧠 Episode Overview:

In this compelling episode, Rachael Flick sits down with Chris Burns, a former law enforcement officer and military veteran, to unpack the deep and often overlooked toll of PTSD, moral injury, and hostile work environments for today’s first responders. Because of these additional struggles, recruiting and retention is at an all time low.

Together, they shine a light on how modern police reform and media-driven narratives have not only shifted public perception, but created real, dangerous consequences for the men and women trying to serve their communities.

“One of the most dangerous places now for law enforcement is the traffic stop… You never know who you’re going to get.” — Chris Burns

From increased risks at routine stops to the rise of online radicalization and the eroding trust between officers and the communities they serve, this episode explores how reforms—though often necessary—can lose nuance, damage morale, and increase occupational trauma if not carefully implemented.

🔑 Key Takeaways:

  • The growing disconnect between public perception and real policing challenges
  • How media sensationalism has shaped anti-police narratives
  • The deadly consequences of misinformation and fear-based assumptions
  • Personal stories of officers ambushed and targeted in the line of duty
  • The role of social media echo chambers in fueling radicalization
  • The urgent need for balanced reform and support for first responders

🗣️ Featured Quote:

“What was lost in a lot of that was just the nuance of those situations that are so difficult for humans to deal with anyway.” — Rachael Flick

🙋 About the Guest:

Chris Burns is a former law enforcement officer and veteran whose firsthand experiences with trauma and resilience give him a raw, honest perspective on what it means to serve his community and the nation. His insights into both military and police culture offer invaluable wisdom for anyone seeking to understand the invisible battles our first responders face.

The groundwork for Rachael’s complex post traumatic stress disorder was laid in her childhood experience of growing up with her abusive father.

Rachael’s dad was schizophrenic, bipolar and borderline personality disorder. He hid his mental illness with charisma and charm that fooled all of those he worked for, lead and went to church with.

When Rachael began to process the extensive abuse of her childhood, an element of “crazy making” became very distinct as no one could believe that this upstanding member of their community had been physically violent, spiritually manipulative, and unfaithful in his marriage.

Through extensive therapy, Rachael worked desperately to bring order from the chaos of growing up in a home with no stability from a parent who saw the world differently than other healthy adults.

In 2021, after contracting Covid, Rachael‘s father‘s advanced-early onset- dementia could no longer be hidden. In this episode of the hopecast, Rachael talks about going to great lengths to become her dad‘s guardian in order to get him necessary care. Listen to hear how God’s great love carried Rachael to be able to care for the man who had shattered her soul.

What do you do when faced with your friend's deep loss? Will you be ready to stand beside them?

This week's episode brings extra helpful tips in navigating hardship with the people you love.

Even though Kindra didn't feel trained or knowledgeable in helping a friend through loss, she talks about how she walked into helping me in the immediacy of my loss.

A few of Kindra's tips in the episode:

  1. Relate to the unique needs of your friend. Everyone will grieve differently.
  2. Expect that helping with grief tasks will take you out of your comfort zone. Be ready to do things that stress and challenge you personally.
  3. The helpers of the grieving person will need support. Plan to schedule things that will recharge you physically, mentally and emotionally. Receive these things without guilt.

View Details

This changed everything. On an unsuspecting phone call "just to check in," Rachael told Kindra that Micah had been shot. Soon alerts were coming through on Kindra's phone that an officer had been killed in a shooting in Colorado Springs.

Shocked and shaken by the death of her and her husband's long time friend, Kindra stepped bravely into the days, weeks and months to come as a comforter, practical support and battle tested intercessor.

"I knew the Lord had not called me to care for the other family and friends who were affected by Micah's death. My assignment, my anointing, was to be there for you. It was simply to be your person."

"I intentionally, physically, kept my hand on you as you were escorted to various activities. I listened to the Lord minute by minute for His direction in how to support you in this place where I had no wisdom or practical experience of my own."

Listen as Kindra and Rachael talk about sitting shiva in the immensity of grief. Kindra recounts balancing the demands of planning two huge funerals, filtering needs and requests, and setting the boundaries that protected the family.

This episode is a story of a beautiful love between two friends. Tested and tried through death and loss, you'll be empowered and encouraged by the faithful provision of God that enabled them to write new chapters of a healing journey.

On this Valentine's edition of the show, we dig into the audio vault to bring you a classic episode. This show first aired back in December of 2020. This is a heartfelt show that we know you're going to be touched by.

Micah and Rachael Flick were an average couple with an extraordinary love. They met at their gym, choosing to work out longer, just to spend more time together. When Micah finally asked Rachael out on a date, their feelings for each other grew quickly. Four months after their first date, Micah proposed and Rachael eagerly accepted.

Rachael didn't have a healthy model of marriage from her own childhood. She and Micah did their best to prepare with marriage materials and pre-marital counseling, but the learning curve was steep. Rachael realized, in retrospect, that she had done a lot of "image management" in their dating in order to put her best foot forward.

The reality of marriage was far from a fairytale. There was a lot of hard work and conflict involved in creating a love that would withstand pressure and unrealistic expectations

When Micah died, Rachael gave a eulogy that moved the nation. The stories of their love, humor and humanity touched those who watched Rachael recall dancing in the kitchen with Micah only days before he died. Rachael also spoke much needed truth of the realities facing law enforcement in a season where they are intentionally targeted as symbols of truth and authority in America.

Rachael answers the tough questions around regret and if she would choose to marry Micah again, knowing the pain that would come in the future. Ultimately, the love that they shared inspires others to fight for each other and appreciate the simple pleasures of a life well lived.

I watch a lot of superhero movies. Superman, Batman, Black Widow, the Hulk, Captain Marvel.

The hero’s journey always has a common thread of pain. The difference between the hero and the villain is what they chose to do with that pain and their great strength.

The Darryl Strawberry story has been shared under a microscope. The world championships and the seedy drug dens that led to suspensions.

But Darryl’s story didn’t start or end there. Darryl shares the domestic violence in his childhood home and the physical abuse of his father growing up. He decided that he would overcome the message of his father, "that Darryl would never become anything of worth or substance," by setting his sights on baseball as an outlet and place where he could excel.

Becoming a celebrity athlete took Darryl from poverty to the "golden child" of sports. But the money, women and drugs wouldn't fill the brokenness and emptiness of his abusive, absent father.

While raising Darryl and his five siblings, Darryl's mom invested in him, and her unconditional care and faithfulness instilled the character that would later help Darryl rise above the addictions that consumed his life. The unconditional love of his mom and his wife gave him hope to get clean and share the Source of his metamorphosis. Listen in to share part one of his origin story.

On this edition of the show, Rachael talks with author, speaker and podcast host, Allie Marie Smith. She shares her story from her book, Wonderfully Made: Discover the Identity, Love, and Worth You Were Created Fo. It was on a gloomy June day in 2001, eighteen-year-old Allie Marie Smith hopped in her blue Ford Explorer and headed north for the Golden Gate Bridge. She planned to jump off and end her life.

Smith had been a scholar-athlete, part of the popular crowd at her all-girls high school and appeared to have the ideal life. But hiding behind a pretty smile, she was fighting an internal battle with mental illness. “My body was alive, but there was no life within me,” Smith recalls.

In her new book Wonderfully Made: Discover the Identity, Love, and Worth You Were Created For(Moody Publishers), Smith recounts the events that led up to that fateful day, her encounter with a kind-hearted man who came to her aid causing her to abort her original plan, and offers a message of hope and worth for young women reminding them that their identity is not defined by their struggle.

Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States, and its rate increased by 33 percent between 1999 and 2019. Yet that statistic doesn’t include the number of Americans who thought about or attempted suicide: according to Mental Health America, more than 10.3 million U.S. adults have had serious suicidal thoughts. So many people are silently hurting.

Award-winning author and popular speaker Gregory L. Jantz, PhD, equips readers to step up and speak out to those who may be considering suicide in his new book, So Much to Live For: How to Provide Help and Hope to Someone Considering Suicide. With great compassion and clear, actionable strategies, Jantz shows readers what to do, what to say, and how to intervene if they suspect a friend or loved one is considering suicide.

“I say with both realism and optimism that hope can prevail over dark circumstances and belief in the future can provide the inspiration to press on,” writes Jantz. “I have seen scores of people meet their worries, fear, and anxieties head-on, helping them break through to recovery. I’ve seen hope win out over despair, trust win out over fear, faith triumph over adversity.”

In So Much to Live For, readers will learn to recognize the signs and symptoms of suicide, understand the potential causes of suicide, and build the courage to step up and speak out to those who might be considering suicide. Jantz encourages readers to know they can be instrumental in helping to save a life, and gives them the knowledge and tools to know how.

June Hunt, M.A., is an author, singer, speaker and founder of Hope For The Heart, a worldwide biblical counseling ministry. Her lifework has yielded landmark contributions in the field of Christian counseling.

Hope For The Heart, which she founded in 1986, offers biblical hope and practical help – through biblical counsel, coaching and context for contemporary concerns – in more than 60 countries on 6 continents.

Early family pain was the catalyst that shaped June’s compassionate heart. Later as a youth director, and then becoming a college/career director, she became aware of the need for sound biblical counsel. This led June to a lifelong commitment to provide God’s Truth for Today’s Problems.

After years of teaching and research, she developed Counseling Through The Bible, a scripturally based counseling course addressing 100 topics, such as Marriage, Parenting and Boundaries … Anger, Addictions and Abuse … Depression, Stress and Suicide. These resources grew to become the 100-topic Biblical Counseling Library, which helps people move from wrong thinking to right thinking … and from wrong living to right living.

The ministry has steadily grown internationally. Many Hope For The Heart resources have been translated into over 35 languages with more translation requests coming in yearly. In 2002, her first international book, simply called The Keys, received the “Best Book of the Year” award when first launched in the St. Petersburg’s Book Fair. Today, Hope For The Heart partners with indigenous ministries, often in difficult-to-reach countries, to imbed tools and training to help leaders counsel, disciple and share the hope of Christ. Hope For The Heart reaches Chinese and Spanish language speakers around the globe with online counseling and training resources. We are crossing borders and language barriers by reaching into homes and hearts with the message of hope in Christ and application of God’s Word.

June is always on the go! Whether as a guest professor at colleges and seminaries or as a conference or broadcast speaker, she is grateful for every opportunity to share the hope of Christ, both nationally and internationally. June’s best-selling minibook series of 46 topics has sold over 1.5 million copies, especially in airports, grocery stores and drug stores. In 2017, the Hope For The Heart Bible Study Series launched, which includes six Bible studies on the topics of Anger, Depression, Forgiveness, Stress, Verbal and Emotional Abuse and Self-Worth. June’s passion to help others through biblical counsel is fueled by her joy in seeing a life changed through Christ. She gives interviews on a wide range of important topics, such as Childhood Sexual Abuse, Domestic Violence, and whatever hits the current news headlines.

Whether writing, speaking or singing, June Hunt is dedicated to presenting God’s Truth for Today’s Problems. Using sound, biblical methodology, inspired by Romans 12:2, she readily shares the truth that “a changed mind produces a changed heart … and a changed heart produces a changed life.”

On November 11, 2011, Davey and Amanda Blackburn loaded up a moving truck and drove from Greenville, South Carolina to Indianapolis, Indiana to start Resonate Church, a place they hoped would bring new life to a city and reach people who didn’t know God. They were doing all the right things, for the right reasons. They had no idea what was going to happen.

Almost four years later on November 10, 2015, the unspeakable happened. Davey came home from the gym to find that his wife, who was pregnant, had been shot three times during a burglary gone wrong in their home. Thankfully, their fifteen-month-old son was left unharmed in his bedroom just down the hall, but Amanda passed away twenty-four hours later.

The story hit the headlines across the country, and the months following Amanda’s death brought Davey to the lowest level in his life. Nothing Is Wasted is the deeply moving story of Davey’s journey of despair and hardship, hope and healing, and how he has discovered firsthand that God has a bigger purpose in our pain. It is through this tragedy and Davey’s brokenness, forgiveness, and willingness to share his story that God’s presence and healing power allow triumph, victory, and forgiveness to have the last word.

Are you stuck? How to know if your healing journey is on track

Grief is so messy. Sometimes it makes you feel crazy. Nobody seems to have a handle on if you're on the path or not.

When Micah died I really wanted to "grieve well." I did a lot of therapy, body work, life coaching and self reflection. I hoped that if I grieved "best practices," I could shorten the process. I mean, I'm a trauma therapist! I knew all the right things.

But despite my best efforts, I haven't been able to short change the process. Normal grief adaptation is three to five years. I HATED when people told me that. But here I am, 3 years out, feeling the beginnings of rhythm and consistency.

Complex bereavement is a therapeutic name for a diagnosis that means that you've gotten stuck. Grief is crazy. Grief is unpredictable. There's no easy path. But there are some markers that you're not progressing that you've gotten stuck.

If you or a friend or family member have stopped in the healing process, this episode will help you break through and make strides to keep going on your healing journey.

This week’s episode centered around the conflicts and guilt and self sabotage that happen when we live in depletion. Staying in bad relationships. Expecting our spouse to recharge us. Feeling bad that we don’t have more to give.
.
This week with #DearRach, I have some insights on how to refill that heart cup all of us have. And now I’m practicing what I preach. Doing things to restore and refill in anticipation of the hurt that will come in remembering and honoring my hero.
.
Go listen. And then go care for your heart too.

Blended family question: How to help your 12 year old step son adapt from Bio mom's house to Bio dad's house. Going from punitive to positive discipline. Reparenting to your household expectations. Marriage is hard. It's messy. There's no part of your life that a spouse doesn't see when the two become one. And all of that is just what normal, mutually committed couples experience! But what happens in a marriage when one partner regrets their commitment and stops doing the hard work of investing in the marriage? What recourse does someone have when their spouse decides to opt out, without actually leaving? Tracey Lynn Russell came face to face with this difficult conflict, when the man of her dreams decided he wished he hadn't married her.  After consulting seven counselors, with a one year old baby, Tracey made the gut wrenching decision to employ some tough boundaries in her marriage and allow her husband to walk away. Tracey read "Love Must Be Tough" by Dr. James Dobson, and acted to end the dysfunctional pleaser and avoider attachment style. When Tracey learned of Mark's unfaithfulness in their marriage, she became resolute in her desire for divorce. Now, she and Mark are remarried with four children and have celebrated more than 20 years of marriage with each other. Listen to this episode to hear how God softened their hearts, led them through healing and brought them back together.
