Our Good Friday service reflects a historic church service order known as tenebrae. Tenebrae is a Latin word translated as “darkness”. As we worship through the readings of sections of Matthew’s gospel and respond in song, notice the progression of shadows and darkness in our setting at Mobile Bay. This growing darkness serves as a symbol of the growing sense of hopelessness that surrounded the death of Jesus. We may end this service with a more somber note of praise, but look forward to Sunday, when we will celebrate the resurrection of our Savior, Jesus!
