Join Renee in this riveting interview with Trauma Expert Iya Affo, who is the founder of Heal Historical Trauma. As a descendant of spiritual and physical healers, Iya's life has centered around spirituality, #IndigenousHealing and wellness. Her #ancestors hail from the Sacred City of the 41 Mountains in West Africa, as well as Barbados, Jamaica, and the Bahamas.
Iya began to develop an interest in neuroscience at a young age, which was fostered through experiments in the rat lab at Columbia University during her mother’s doctoral research. The first part of Iya's life was focused on physical healing, and she pursued education in Nutrition, Massage Therapy and eventually Chiropractic, all the while participating in a variety of indigenous healing practices.
Iya has worked with clients seeking healing for 35 years. Today, she is a Culturalist and Historical #Trauma Specialist who earned Western Certification as a Trauma Specialist. Iya is certified to facilitate Dr. Bruce Perry's Neurosequential Model for Caregiving and the Trust-Based Relational Intervention (TBRI) model. She is a Certified Trauma & Resilience Life Coach, a Certified Adverse Childhood Experiences Trainer and has completed Certification for the Native American-based Fatherhood is Sacred/Motherhood is Sacred program.

Paul Selig is a channel of literature and has many books, including trilogies with messages from his Guides, whom he simply calls the Guides. They include I Am the Word, The Book of Love and Creation, The Book of Knowing and Worth, The Book of Mastery, The Book of Truth, The Book of Freedom, and the Beyond the Known Trilogy: Realization, Alchemy, and The Kingdom. Paul received his master's degree from Yale and a spiritual experience in 1987 left him clairvoyant. Described as "a medium for the living," He has the unique ability to step-into and "become" the people his clients ask about, often taking on their personalities and physical characteristics as he "hears" them telepathically. Dr. Eben Alexnader is a Harvard trained American neurosurgeon and author. In 2008, he went under a medically-induced coma while being treated for meningitis. While in coma, he had a near-death experience (NDE), which he describes in his book: Proof of Heaven: A Neurosurgeon's Journey into the Afterlife. He asserts that the coma resulted in brain death, and that consciousness is not only a product of the brain, but it lives on in the afterlife. His latest book brings more science into the mix: Living in a Mindful Universe. Renee chats with Eben about his experiences, his views on how and why consciousness lives beyond life as we know it and why understanding this is fundamental to understanding our very existence.

Jai Uttal is an American musician, a Grammy-nominated singer and a pioneer in the world music community with his eclectic East-Meets-West sound. We talk about his life, his path to living a spiritual life and ultimately becoming a Kirtan singer. At 19, Uttal moved to California and studied under Sarod player, Ali Akbar Khan. He later began making regular trips to India, where he spent time with practitioners from both Buddhist and Hindu traditions, wandering Bengali street musicians, and singing with the kirtan wallahs in the temple of his Hindu guru Neem Karoli Baba. Uttal adopted the spiritual practice of kirtan, the ancient bhakti yoga of chanting the names of God.

Acharya Shunya is an author, speaker, and ecclesiastical head of Vedika Global, who is dedicated to sharing ancient Vedic wisdom with the modern world. Zainab Salbi acts as a humanitarian, a writer and a social entrepreneur who has dedicated her life to women's rights and freedom. She is the co-founder of Daughters for Earth, a fund and a movement of Daughters rising up worldwide with climate solutions to protect and restore Mother Earth. She has frequently been named as one of the women changing the world by leading publications ranging from Newsweek to The Guardian. Oprah Winfrey identified her as one of the women changing the world to People Magazine and President Bill Clinton identified her as one of the 21st-century heroes to Harper's Bazaar. In this episode, we talk about her early beginnings, her life in Iran and how she made it to the United States. Her resilience brought her voice to the limelight, where she became a host and executive editor of several shows including #MeToo Now What? on PBS. We also talk about spiritual awakening and the environment - what it means for us individually and together, as a collective consciousness rising to do the best thing for humanity as a whole.
At the age of 23, Zainab founded Women for Women International, a humanitarian organization dedicated to women survivors of wars. Mirabai says that she lives for beauty and that writing fills her cup as does reading literary fiction and poetry. The Sacred Feminine and the wisdom of the mystics across the spiritual traditions infuse her life with clarity and meaning. We talk about her work as a modern mystic, former professor, speaker, leader and author across traditions. We explore the teachings in her book Wild Mercy and at the end of our interview, we include a snippet from her book signing and reading at Book Passage in Corte Madera where she spoke about her latest book Ordinary Mysticism.
She is a daughter of the counter-culture, born in New York to secular Jewish parents who rejected the patriarchy of institutionalized religion. Intellectual artists and advocates of social justice and environmental responsibility, her family was active in the anti-war protest movement of the Vietnam era. Her life changed after a childhood road trip through the jungles of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, where they lived for many months on an isolated Caribbean beach, and ended in the mountains of Taos, New Mexico where she lives to this day.
She was an adjunct professor of Philosophy and World Religions at the University of New Mexico-Taos for 20 years. Her emphasis has always been on making connections between the perennial teachings found at the heart of all the world's spiritual paths, in an effort to promote peace and justice. Mirabai speaks and teaches nationally and internationally on the teachings of the mystics and contemplative practice, and the transformational power of grief and loss.

Marianne Williamson has been has been a leader of spiritually progressive circles for more than four decades. She is the author of 16 books, four of which have been #1 New York Times best sellers. Her other bestsellers have included A Woman's Worth, The Law of Divine Compensation, Tears to Triumph and The Gift of Change. With her books and online classes she has taught millions of people the universal spiritual principles at the heart of miracle-minded thinking. He brings the context of the story to our understanding of the 13.7 billion-year trajectory of cosmogenesis. He is co-author of The Universe Story, which is the result of a 10-year collaboration with the cultural historian Thomas Berry. Jill’s latest book Whole Brain Living: The Anatomy of Choice and the Four Characters That Drive Our Life may just change how you show up in the world. Harvard-trained and published neuroanatomist, her research specialized in understanding how our brain creates our perception of reality. She was interested in this subject because she has a brother who is diagnosed with the brain disorder schizophrenia. Renee chats with Dr. Dean Ornish about Heart Health, Prevention to most diseases and their program at PMRI Lifestyle Changes has even reversed diseases in many cases. For over 44 years, Dean has directed clinical research demonstrating, for the first time, that comprehensive lifestyle changes may begin to reverse even severe coronary heart disease, without drugs or surgery. Medicare created a new benefit category, “intensive cardiac rehabilitation,” to provide coverage for this program. His research showed that comprehensive lifestyle changes affect gene expression, “turning on” disease-preventing genes and “turning off” genes that promote cancer and heart disease, as well as the first controlled study showing that these lifestyle changes may begin to reverse cellular aging by lengthening telomeres, the ends of our chromosomes which regulate aging (in collaboration with Dr. Elizabeth Blackburn, Nobel Laureate in Medicine & Physiology).

Who were the Seraphim? And how do they relate to angelic energies if at all? Indigenous wisdom is something we’ve been cut off from as a species for far too long now. Regardless of what culture you hail from, you’ve had an indigenous ancestor (actually thousands) and there’s an innate part of you who knows this incredible wisdom and yearns for it but doesn’t know quite how to reconnect to “it.” You see, we all have the memories and knowledge of indigenous wisdom – we simply need to embrace it, or rather re-embrace it. How many of us realize that we are all energy. Ping Fu’s great book Bend, Not Break also speaks to this from a business perspective as she weaves in her wisdom from the East. Ahhh yes, Abundance and Prosperity – we all want a bit more of both don’t we? Many associate these words with financial wealth when from a spiritual perspective, they mean so much more – abundance of love, joy, peace, community, connection, creativity, freedom – you get the idea. People think that financial abundance gives them all of these things and yet we can have them with or without financial abundance. This doesn’t mean that the Universe wants you to be poor – you know, that belief system that come us grew up with – you can be spiritual or wealthy but not both? This is so far from the “truth”. When we follow the Universal Laws of All That Is, then abundance and flow of all things we desire in our lives come to us with ease and grace. But, we must activate that field of prosperity and abundance in a way that “it” understands. In other words, if you approach the field of resonance with an energy of “lack” or “longing,” then that’s precisely what you’ll get more of. There’s that word again: resonance. When we think of DNA, we tend to think of it in linear terms – aka our physical DNA that the human eye can see under a microscope. We all have an opportunity to choose each and every day whether we plug into the “fear” grid of life and let that control our decisions, emotions, feelings and “realities” or the “love” grid. While this may sound trite, we simply mean this: we choose how we want to perceive and experience life. It doesn’t mean that traumas and events that occur in our lives may not affect our emotions negatively or make us feel sad, aka the loss of a loved one or when a situation turns our life upside down to a point where it impacts our family, i.e., loss of a job or a child being diagnosed with cancer. We are not suggesting that a life of this nature isn’t real nor sad, but how we manage the triggers which come up around it, are something we can control. To dance with fear, we need to not try to conquer it but merely rise above it and move with the flow of it, like the best martial artists and spiritual masters of our time teach. Suffering as we experience it in our daily lives isn’t reality yet we perceive it to be reality. In other words, suffering becomes suffering when we decide or perceive it to be real. This is a very linear way of thinking and looking at the world. From a spiritual perspective, there is nothing but NOW, nothing but the present moment. When we look at we do have rather than where we “feel” or “perceive” suffering, then the suffering dissipates. This is of course supportive of some of the most ancient Buddhist teachings as well as that of other esoteric wisdom.
