In this episode, Prina Shah dives into the topic of office gossip—what it is, how it harms workplace culture, and most importantly, how to manage it. Prina shares two powerful quotes to frame the conversation: "Those who gossip to you, gossip about you" and "Loose lips sink ships." She highlights why gossip can be detrimental and provides a three-step framework to evaluate whether or not you should engage in a conversation that may be gossip:

  1. Is it true?
  2. Would you say this to the person directly?
  3. Is it beneficial for you to know this information?

Prina also differentiates between gossip and debriefing, encouraging listeners to reflect on whether their workplace conversations are helpful and constructive or harmful and toxic. This episode is packed with practical insights to help you steer clear of gossip and maintain a healthier, more positive work environment.

Key Takeaways:

  • Gossip erodes trust and damages workplace culture.
  • Evaluate conversations using Prina’s three-step framework.
  • Understand the difference between debriefing (a healthy communication practice) and gossiping.

Prina delves into one of the most crucial, yet often misunderstood, skills for any CEO: how to lead the room with presence and purpose.

Prina breaks down actionable, practical strategies to help you, as a CEO or executive, own the room—not because of your title, but through intentional actions, thoughtful pauses, and inspiring leadership. These are not just theoretical ideas; they’re techniques Prina has successfully used in her work with top executive teams.

Key Takeaways:

  1. Enter Like You Belong There:
    • Command attention with purpose, pausing as you enter to set the tone for the room without arrogance.
  2. Lead With Questions, Not Answers:
    • Avoid the "Hippo Effect" and shift the focus to the collective intelligence of the room. Ask thought-provoking, open-ended questions that challenge assumptions.
  3. Own Your Silences:
    • Silence is a powerful tool that forces deep thinking and enhances the impact of your words. Practice waiting before speaking again to give people the space they need to contribute meaningfully.
  4. Use Stories to Control the Narrative:
    • People remember stories, not data. Craft compelling narratives to illustrate your vision and inspire your team.
  5. Take the Room's Pulse, Then Set the Tone:
    • As a CEO, you’re not just reacting to the room—you control the atmosphere. Whether calming or energising, lead like a thermostat, not a thermometer.
  6. Leave Before You’re Done:
    • Whenever possible, conclude while the energy is high, leaving the room wanting more. This empowers your team to take ownership and continue without your constant presence.

Why This Matters:

If you don’t learn how to lead the room, the room will lead you. You risk losing control of the conversation, decision-making processes, and, ultimately, your organisation’s direction. But if you master these techniques, you’ll not only inspire loyalty and engagement but also create a culture of innovation and strategic thinking that cascades down through every level of your business.

Get In Touch:

If you’re a CEO or executive looking to elevate your leadership and bring your team to new heights, Prina is here to help. These techniques aren’t just theoretical—they’re proven strategies that will transform the way your team responds to your leadership.

Reach out to Prina to develop your executive team into a high-performance, cohesive unit that drives results and creates a legacy. You’ve already got the title—now it’s time to own the room. Find all the details below.

In this insightful episode of the Ways to Change the Workplace podcast, host Prina Shah welcomes back Aadil Abbas, financial planner and co-owner of Own Financial Planning in Sydney. Together, they tackle one of the most significant life events – family planning – and its impact on careers, finances, and emotional well-being.

Adil shares practical financial tips for navigating the costs of starting and raising a family, including budgeting for planned and unplanned expenses, stress-testing your lifestyle on a single income, and understanding the financial implications of reduced income. He also discusses the importance of investment structures like bonds and the value of family support in managing childcare costs.

Prina brings her expertise as a leadership coach, emphasising the importance of resetting workplace expectations, planning for a return to work, and the mental adjustment required after becoming a parent. Together, they stress the importance of financial wellness in the workplace, calling for more open discussions about financial planning as a critical part of employee well-being.

Key Takeaways:

  • Raising a child can cost between $750,000 to $1 million in Australia by the time they turn 18.
  • Plan your finances ahead of starting a family – not just when the baby arrives.
  • Create a budget that includes planned expenses and a buffer for unplanned, emotional purchases.
  • Stress-test your spending plan on a single income to prepare for potential financial changes.
  • Seek family support to manage childcare costs, which can be a significant financial burden.
  • Explore investment options like education and investment bonds to save for big-ticket items like school fees.
  • Financial planning in the workplace should extend beyond basic parental leave discussions to cover employees’ overall financial well-being.

Today, we tackle a crucial topic that may be uncomfortable but essential for creating a thriving work environment - the five ways you might be unintentionally killing your workplace culture.

  1. Micromanagement: We discuss how micromanagement, although seemingly ensuring correctness, can stifle team spirit and erode trust and autonomy. Drawing on sociologist Max Weber's theory of bureaucracy and Patrick Lencioni's concept of trust, we emphasize the importance of empowering teams and fostering trust through autonomy.
  2. Lack of Transparency: We highlight the negative impact of a lack of transparency on creating a culture of uncertainty and mistrust. Referencing David Rock's SCARF model and the Fair Process Effect, we stress the significance of transparency in building fairness and inclusivity within the workplace.
  3. Ignoring Employee Feedback: We explore the consequences of ignoring employee feedback, emphasizing the importance of creating a participative culture where employees feel valued and heard. Drawing on Kurt Lewin's change management model and the Hawthorne studies, we underscore the value of feedback loops for continuous improvement and employee satisfaction.
  4. Promoting the Wrong People: We discuss the detrimental effects of promoting individuals based solely on tenure rather than merit and alignment with company values. Referencing the Peter Principle and Jim Collins' concept of getting the right people on the bus, we advocate for promoting individuals who not only perform well but also champion the organization's culture and values.
  5. Overemphasis on Short-Term Results: We address the risks of prioritizing short-term gains over long-term culture sustainability. Drawing on the collapse of Enron as a case study, we emphasize the importance of balancing short-term results with long-term goals and nurturing team well-being and growth.

It's never too late to course correct and make intentional changes to enhance your workplace culture. If you found this episode valuable, share it with your colleagues, leave a review, and continue the conversation with me on social media or via email. Are you a culprit of Destination Addiction?

I wanna talk to you about a concept called destination addiction, and destination addiction is exactly that.

We are destined for something, and we're addicted to get there no matter what cost.

Now I see that happening very much so in the workplace, and it's a difficult thing that happens because of the fact that you have your strategic plans.

You've got all of your work plans for the year ready to go and to achieve all of the things that you want to.

But once you've achieved something, you jump on to the next goal, to the next project, to the next milestone, you don't stop. You don't take stock of what has been.

One really big risk for organizations that often happens is not stopping to pause to learn from the lessons of the project that has just been, to document it, and then to move on to the next thing.

So my question to you is: Are you a culprit of destination addiction?

If you are, what are you gonna do about it?

Let me know!

Is your performance and management system really serving you well?

Is your performance and management system enabling or disabling conversations to happen between managers and employees?

Is your performance and management system optmising your culture?

Truth is, many performance and management systems are not filling the needs of all of the above and are often a system that is placed by human resources in order for them to:

  • Track the completion rates of your performance plans.
  • Track the development plans to link in to their learning and development.
  • Report to the Executive on areas which are not complying.

Instead of such an honourous tool, why not consider another way?

Listen in to what I have to share and let me know what you think...

Clocking in or outcomes focused?

Here's a thought for you. Implement a results only work environment where employees are evaluated based on the work that they produce rather than that time that they have spent in the office.

Another fun fact for you, did you know that the 8 hour workday was in fact created during the industrial revolution.

And during the industrial revolution, there was a lot of factory working
and manufacturing kind of work.

So the idea about the eight hour work day was the fact that you'd work during the day for eight hours, you'd have eight hours of personal time and eight hours of sleep
long gone are those days.

So consider reviewing your workplace policy as to how many hours people should be working because really - should it not be about the results that people deliver rather than the hours that they put in?

Food for thought...

And the reason I ask this is because when I led a huge HR team of, you know, HR professionals, We're the worst people to develop ourselves, I tell you, and I love learning.

So it was really difficult for me to be in a team that didn't really value learning for themselves.

So what I did, as a result, in our team meetings, we used to have, one little agenda item ten minutes, and everybody used to take turns in taking this agenda item.

And what it was was what is a cool new thing happening beyond our organization, beyond our little bubble, in our industry or within our specialism that we work in, that we truly to know about. And the person, whoever was presenting or reporting back, would be creative. They might bring a white paper for us to read, or might present to us on this wonderful novel thing happening in the HR world in my world that I was in, or that share whatever else.

So my question to you is, how are you staying on top of All of the things that out there? Of the contemporary knowledge that you truly do need to be aware of, if not for now, then definitely for the future.

Try this example of having just a ten minute agenda item within your team meeting for people to bring some cool new to the conversation. Oh my gosh, your team meeting will be much better for it as well!

Let me know how you go.

Welcome back to another insightful episode of Ways to Change your Workplace, where we strive to create meaningful discussions around improving our professional environments. This week, listen in as I'm joined by Jamie Lee, an Executive Coach from New York, who brings a wealth of knowledge on the complex dynamics women face in office politics.

Together, we unpack the subtleties of navigating workplace hierarchies and the often unspoken rules that govern our career trajectories, especially poignant during International Women's Week.

In our sometimes hilarious and genuinely heartfelt exchange, Jamie and I tackle the reality of being the only woman in high-pressure, male-dominated fields, like hedge fund trading desks and startup leadership teams.

The psychological toll of such environments can't be overstressed, and we discuss how hyper-vigilance affects creativity and presence at work.

We also delve into the exhausting need to conform to masculine behaviors, and the profound importance of maintaining one's integrity amidst the inauthenticity that office politics may demand.

Finally, we address the elephant in the room: workplace toxicity and the quest for parity.

The conversation moves beyond just identifying the issues, as we also share personal experiences and reflect on the larger systemic changes necessary for creating equitable workspaces.

The importance of personal space, the freedom of self-expression, and the impact of leadership on team dynamics are all explored, leaving you with a deeper understanding of the challenges and potential solutions for fostering a fair and supportive professional environment. Join us in this crucial conversation and if it resonates with you, be sure to subscribe for more empowering discussions.

Are you stuck in the middle as a leader or or a manager? ...

...In the middle of the board, the executive decisions, and then everything that your team and the people that report to you are telling you, and you are stuck in the middle.

So a bit of a piggy in the middle situation is what you may well be in.

And when you such a situation when there's change happening in an organization,
especially, you as the manager or the leader have to relay the messaging from the top.

Now, you might not believe in it. You might think it's a bucket of crap.

However, you still have to tow the corporate line, and that's where a lot of internal conflict happens for such people.

So I've got some tips for you in that respect. If you do have in or conflict, and you do disagree with whatever changes, you know, the powers that beer making, but you have to relay it to the rest of your team...

Remain factual. Listen, allow your team to ask questions and respond to those
questions without being emotive.

Truth is you are there to be the messenger of whatever news it is, allowing your motions to get into the mix and, disagreeing with whatever changes have been made, may be career suicide for you.

If you are able to disagree and you have valid reasons and solutions for anti the change,
then absolutely go forth and share. But often, it is the case that the powers that be
in their wonderful ivory towers who often have no idea of what's happening on the ground level, make wonderful decisions. Sometimes they are brain farts (!) sometimes they are really good decisions, that you have to relay back to the rest of the team,
and it puts you in a tough situation.

So relay the information back without being emotive.

Listen, allow your team to ask you questions.

I wish you well in being the piggy in the middle.

It's a tough one, but it can be done!

Growth will also feel like loss...

Growth will also feel like loss.
Remember that.
I'm gonna say it again.
Growth will also feel like loss.
Completely so, as we change,
as we go up to new levels, sometimes we shed people It's like,
you know, the analogy of the snake shedding its skin.
There's a loss there. Every time something changes,
we gain something, but we also lose something.
So consider that from your perspective,
growth will also feel like loss,
and that's okay because you're growing.

Keep growing!

Do not self reject!

The amount of friends I have who say, oh, no. no.

I can't apply for this job or that job because I don't meet a hundred percent of the criteria.

Fuck that. Who cares? It does not matter.

Your skills are transferrable, and the whole point of applying for a new job or a new opportunity is that you're gonna learn new things!

You're not gonna be that fully perfect person that's just going to know everything and go there from day one and, you know, begin working as if you know everything about the organization.

No. That is not what is expected of you either!

So please do not self reject.

There's no need for it.

There's far more to you, and remember your skills are transferable.

So please do not self reject.

Never have I had a guest on my podcast who I love as much as I do Saanvi.

I first met her when she was 6 months old. She was an inquisitive baby, full of wonder of the world around her and full of questions.

Now as a 16 year old, I was flattered when Saanvi asked if she could do work experience with me!

The week she had with me was jam packed. I didn't hold back, I wanted to show her the real life of being your own boss, and in this episode we unpacked the week.

Listen to Saanvi melt my heart and guaranteed she will leave you with a spring in your step and hope for our future leaders!

Saanvi is one of many teens I have had the opportunity to support. I have been a facilitator on the Future Female Leaders Program which you need to support if you do not already.

The world needs more future leaders like Saanvi!

You are the greatest project you will work on!

I heard this line and it just changed my perspective on my own development. “You are the greatest project that you will ever work on.”

Let me say that again. “You are the greatest project that you will ever work on.”

When you look at yourself that way, you're gonna look at yourself from a workplace perspective.

That's what I'm really talking to… and what are you taking in?

And what you're regurgitating as well?

With that statement, once you hear it, consider: what you want to do.

“You are the greatest project that you will ever work on.”

When I heard it, I decided that I wanted to quit my corporate job and start my own business, and start a podcast, and start a ways to change a workplace movement. And here I am (!!) doing exactly that.

So “you are the greatest project that you will ever work on.”

What are you gonna do about it?

Let me know your aha moments.

That, which is in front of you is your teacher is one of my most cherished sayings. Why?

Because it holds true in both good and tough times, especially in the workplace (and life, yo!)

When faced with a lousy manager, a toxic team, or a dreadful company culture, what lies ahead of you becomes your teacher.

You become aware of what is wrong and what you are willing to tolerate.

You also gain clarity on what you won't tolerate and what actions you need to take in the future.

It is crucial to view negative experiences as opportunities for learning and to ask ourselves, "What can I learn from this?"

Because everything that lies ahead of us has something to teach us, if only we look at it from the right perspective.

What do you reckon?

Poor Work Cultures and Trauma Bonding With Your Colleagues

If you have uttered any of these statements, you may have a trauma bond with your workplace and your colleagues…

  • "I know the workplace is toxic, but I can't imagine leaving. We've been through so much together."
  • "I keep hoping things will get better, that they'll appreciate my dedication and hard work eventually."
  • "I can't speak up about the issues because I'm afraid of the consequences. It's like we're all in this together."
  • "Despite the stress, I can't envision myself anywhere else. We've become a sort of dysfunctional family."
  • "I know I'm not happy, but leaving would feel like abandoning ship. We've weathered so much together."
  • "There's a strange camaraderie here, even if it's born out of shared misery. It's hard to let that go."

In today's fast-paced and competitive work environments, it is common for individuals to spend more time with their colleagues than with their own families. This can create a unique dynamic where employees form deep connections with their coworkers, often referred to as "workplace families."

While a positive work culture can foster a sense of belonging and support, a toxic work environment can lead to trauma bonding among colleagues. In this episode, we will explore the concept of trauma bonding in the context of poor work cultures and discuss its impact on individuals and organizations (and I will provide practical ideas to address said issues.)

I have had many people talk to me about this so here is a podcast episode covering:

  • The Impact of Poor Work Cultures
  • Understanding Trauma Bonding
  • Shared experiences of adversity
  • Signs of Trauma Bonding
  • The Cycle of Trauma Bonding
  • The Consequences of Trauma Bonding
  • Breaking Free from Trauma Bonding
  • Recognizing the Signs

I have helped many individuals and workplaces to optimise their organisaitonal culture, to create healthier teams and to create the right sub culture if your overall culture is untouchable.

Here’s to a world without crappy work cultures, without lousy leaders and without toxic teams. It can be done!

**You don’t have to suffer at work. You don’t deserve it.

When you start turning over rocks, you're going to find worms!

Then you need to be strategic with how to address said worms!

When you start turning over rocks, you're gonna find worms.

You are then therefore going to be the problem...

And, ideally, you should be the solution as well.

So in a workplace, often is the case that we will uncover issues.

And, oh my gosh, there will be issues and often people just go to their manager with issues without providing any solutions.

So my recommendation to you is, or my question to you is when you uncover those rocks, you find those worms, are you going to be a part of the problem or are you going to be a part of the solution?

Every time I used to go to my manager with an issue, I'd also have a bit of a solution, at least one or two solutions in my pocket ready to say, hey, I thought about this strategically, and while we have this problem, here are the associated risks with it, here are the potential costs, and this is my solution therefore.

Try it and see how you go!

My friend Yoke van Dam all the way from South Africa has been called the Kintsugi Queen because of her ability to join, repair and transform teams into something quite wonderful.

Her work is like Kintsugi, the Japanese art form that mends broken pottery with gold.. Her tried and tested high-performance processes have seen even the most under-performing and fractured teams join together and become stronger and more remarkable.

How to heal a fractured team is what we discuss and here are some questions I posed...

  • What are some common signs or indicators that a team is toxic, and how can these be identified and addressed proactively?
  • How can a team development specialist help cultivate a culture of open communication and psychological safety within a toxic team?
  • What strategies or interventions can be employed to address interpersonal conflicts and toxic behavior within a team while maintaining productivity and focus on goals?
  • In your experience, what are some effective techniques for building trust and repairing damaged relationships within a toxic team environment?
  • How can team development specialists foster accountability and ownership among team members, particularly in toxic teams where blame-shifting or finger-pointing is prevalent?
  • What role does leadership play in optimizing toxic teams, and how can team development specialists collaborate with leaders to bring about positive change?
  • Can you share a success story or case study where a toxic team was transformed into a high-performing and harmonious unit? What were the key steps and strategies employed in the transformation process?
  • One way Yoke would change the way of the workplace is a great answer!

When will you step down to lift someone up?
The reason I ask that is because often in a corporation or when we work in a hierarchy, we are set in our ways in this is my role, and that your role.

When I used to work in corporate land, I didn't give a crap about hierarchy.
My people that reported to me were very welcome to go and attend meetings on my behalf.

However, it went down with a little bit of iffiness initially, until I started to change the culture, slowly, and explain to people that I am stepping down so the rest of my team can step up because you can't rely solely on me you have to rely on the wider team.
So my question to you is, for this week, consider how you are going to step down to allow others to step up. It's a brilliant thing to do. Try it and see how you go.

Networking Tip: Be Interested, Not Interesting

Here is a really good networking tip for you.

Be interested, not interesting.

Being interested puts that perspective on others.

Being interesting puts pressure on yourself to be this cool kid in the party or the networking event, whatever it might be.

So by being interested, that means that you're there. You're curious.

You've got the right kind of questions to engage with people, to truly connect with people.

And if you ever stuck in a networking event, one good question I always ask people is what brought you here?

If it's someone that's hosting the event, how do you know the host?

Those kind of questions to open up further conversation are great.

So it's always good to ask open questions in a networking situation.

And remember, be interested, not interesting.

Let me know how you go.

Eight people you need in your professional network to unlock your full potential

In today’s market having a strong, dynamic, and diverse network to draw on is pivotal to scaling your professional success. I cannot emphasise enough the importance of social capital, whether you’re a solopreneur, an executive, a professional or a CEO - drawing on divergent relationships that nurture new ways of thinking by foregrounding viewpoints, lived experiences and resources could be the gamechanger you need to level up and unlock your full career potential.

Identifying and connecting with these people will not only help you build an expansive network but challenge the unconscious parameters of your own ways of thinking. As a result of these collaborative networks, I've seen many clients and peers attract more frequent, and more valuable and rewarding personal and professional opportunities.

There are eight people I believe add the most value to your network, in turn helping you scale your full potential as a CEO, entrepreneur or professional.

The Cheerleader

This person keeps you energized and motivated – they have a positive outlook on life and always see the glass half full. You go to them when you need inspiration and encouragement.

The Clarifier

This person is inquisitive and does not take anything at face value. They will probe, and ask you clear, insightful and sometimes uncomfortable questions. They force you to think beyond the superficial level.

The Realist

This person says it like it is, but with compassion. They have your best interests at heart but don’t beat around the bush. They care about you and want to make sure that you do not get in your own way with blind spots or excuses.

The Coach

This person provides strategies to help you show up as the self-actualised version of yourself. They provide tools and ideas to help you navigate through situations and always push for the best outcome.

The Counsellor

This person makes us feel heard and supported. Their role is there to hear you and guide you to find your own solutions and perspectives.

The Controller

This person holds you accountable and does not accept excuses. They will stay on your back until you beat your personal best. They do not accept 50% effort- they want you to give it all!

The Challenger

This person pushes you out of your comfort zone. While the clarifier asks uncomfortable questions, this person pushes you into uncomfortable situations for your personal growth – they make us face our fears.

The Connector

This is the person who has a massive tribe. They walk into a room of strangers and walk out with allies. They have a vast network of people, and they can provide you with connections and resources.

Prina emphasizes the importance of identifying what we are looking for in order to pursue it. She proposes a mission for the next six months: reach out to three new people you would like to connect with.

These individuals could be valuable additions to your professional network, offer opportunities to learn new skills, or simply be wonderful people worth meeting.

In this episode of "Ways to Change Your Workplace," your host, Prina Shah, shares an activity for reflection at the end of the financial year or other milestones.

She discusses the concept of postmortems, where individuals and teams evaluate what worked well and what didn't.

Prina presents a quadrant with achievement versus pride as axes, encouraging listeners to consider their experiences in the past year or project.

The quadrants represent different feelings:

  • "failed this" (low achievement and low pride),
  • "we did this" (high achievement and low pride),
  • "glad it happened" (high pride but low achievement),
  • and "nailed this" (high achievement and high pride).

By engaging in this activity, leaders can gain insights from their team members' perspectives, have open discussions, and plan for the future.

The aim is to create a workplace with better leaders, positive team dynamics, and a healthy culture.

In this episode, I will be discussing the importance of work culture and how to create a subculture within your organization. In episode 60. Brendon talked about Finding the Hidden Influencers in Your Organisation - these are usually people who have created a damn fine subculture! So I am talking subcultures with you...

I start by defining what we mean by work culture and subculture. Work culture refers to the values, beliefs, behaviors, and practices that shape the environment and experience of working within an organization.

A subculture is a group of people within a larger culture that differentiate it from the larger culture.

We'll then delve into the reasons why you might want to create a subculture at work, including the ability to express your identity, connect with others who share similar values and interests, and bring new ideas and behaviors into mainstream society.

Finally, I will provide you with five practical ways to create a subculture at your workplace.

These include:

  1. Establishing shared rules of belonging,
  2. Understanding the issues facing your current culture,
  3. Determining what you will never tolerate,
  4. Learning the rules so you can effectively navigate them,
  5. And regularly reviewing and nurturing your subculture through team development and upskilling.

Join me as I explore the benefits of creating a subculture at work and provide you with the tools to do so!

In this episode of Ways to Change the Workplace, you host, Prina Shah, discusses the issues she has with International Women's Day (IWD) and suggests some solutions.

Prina believes that IWD has become primarily a day for cute selfies and long lunches and breakfast events, which raises awareness but does not address the intersectionality of women's experiences.

She suggests that organizations need to recognize the unique experiences of women from different backgrounds, support the needs of marginalized women, and create opportunities for them to lead and make decisions.

Prina Shah also discusses the issue of toxic masculinity and how harmful societal expectations of what it means to be a man can lead to violence and aggression, negatively affecting women's experiences and safety within the workplace.

She encourages workplaces to address the issue of toxic masculinity and create a culture where showing vulnerability is encouraged.

Overall, Prina Shah challenges listeners to think more deeply about the issues facing women in the workplace and take action to create more equitable workplaces beyond the lip service given to this important topic on International Women’s Day.

Use Your Subcultures to Enable Valuable Change

A lot of organisations overcomplicate change in the workplace.

How can you identify the influencers in your organisation and leverage their subcultures to accelerate effective change?

He has led and guided over $10 Billion in transformative projects and programs across all types of organizations and sectors.

I speak with Brendon about: How to identify internal influencers in your organisation to enable valuable change.

We cover:

  • Why working with volunteers or selecting key stakeholders is not the best approach.
  • The importance of using data to identify internal influencers, and tips on how to collect the data.
  • The different types of change champions that are essential to creating valuable outcomes.
  • Why listening to naysayers, resistors, and objections is essential and helps to avoid group think that can lead to change failure.
  • What it means to decentralise change transformations.
  • Why leaders should take on the role of enablers and supporters, and let the internal influencers be the drivers of change.
  • Creative communication tools to support the change process.
  • And listen in to Brendon’s answer to my question: if you had a magic wand, what is one way you would change the workplace? Hint: he has a surprising perspective on how to enable great ideas in the workplace.

Have you ever been cheated on?

Remember how it stings?

Remember how it was to rebuild trust? Or perhaps you never got to that stage, as often, when trust is broken, it is difficult or near impossible to regain.

Let's think about breaking of trust in a workplace...
I regularly talk about the concept of positional power that you hold in the workplace.

If you break trust of your team, peers, colleagues, leaders, stakeholders +++ it's going to:

  • Impact your professional brand negatively.
  • Leave your team in a potential mess.
  • It's going to take a long time to rebuild trust in you.

In this episode I cover:

  • Reasons for why we feel it so difficult to trust some people at work.
  • How you can genuinely enable people to trust in you.
  • How you can start to trust others at work and why it is important that you should!

No doubt you will enjoy this episode!

Sooooo many people chicken out of giving or asking for feedback due to fear.
It is a tale as old as time.

Why is it that many find it difficult to be assertive in giving and receiving feedback? This is something I have been pondering on for a while. In the workplace, it is because many have not been trained on how to deliver feedback effectively - without the special sh1t sandwich formula...
I have a simple and super effective formula to get you to be bold in giving and seeking constructive feedback. You're going to love it!

Trigger warning for anyone affected by alcoholism or domestic violence. My story is one I haven't told anyone.

Michelle, my client, recently asked me why I do what I do.

She wanted to know what motivates me to work with organisations to develop their people, teams and cultures.

I gave her the most generic response because I didn't know how to articulate my story.

My story begins with finding my Poppa's (Dad's) dead body in January 2000.
**My life has never been the same since.

That event has impacted the way I live, work and love.

Cheer Up: Is Toxic Positivity Ruining Your Culture?

How can you find ways to change the workplace culture if you find yourself in an environment of toxic positivity?

How can you create an environment where depth of conversation can exist in place of toxic positivity, when it comes to emotional intelligence in the workplace?

How can you interpret the value of negative emotions as data in order to achieve your organisation’s ultimate goals during change projects?

About today’s episode:

Today I chat with Dr Maike Neuhaus who is currently based in Brisbane. Dr Neuhaus is a positive psychologist and self-leadership expert who is passionate about helping driven professionals understand what they need in order to flourish and create positive changes in life.

I speak with Dr Maike about: How to identify and navigate an environment of toxic positivity.

Dr Maike talks about how toxic positivity impedes every organisation’s ability to thrive.

  • The difference between toxic positivity and optimism.
  • Interpreting negative emotions as data.
  • How to create deeper, more meaningful conversations around negative emotions in your workplace.
  • How to role model an environment where it’s safe to raise concerns.
  • Strategies for HR professionals who identify toxic positivity in their workplace and how to start bringing in awareness.
  • Reasons why toxic positivity may be exhibited by the best intentioned people in a workplace and how this often relates to boundaries and effective communication.
  • What happens when negative emotions are dismissed at and outside of the workplace, and why they’re valuable data for any organization to achieve their goals.
  • I share perspective on RU Okay Day and ways to approach the conversation so that it is backed by emotional safety.
  • And listen in to Dr Maike’s answer to my question: if you had a magic wand, what is one way you would change the workplace? Hint: it has to do with what she refers to as a flourishing meter.

About today’s guest: Dr Maike Neuhaus is a positive psychologist and self-leadership expert who is passionate about helping driven professionals understand what they need in order to flourish and create positive change in life. She is a Researcher and Lecturer at a top 50 university and builds her work on knowledge and tools that have been proven to work. 4 ways to benefit from the great resignationSubscribe to Prina’s monthly-ish newsletter to get practical tips, tools and more!

Have people left your workplace?

Have they quit to move on to other things?

Have they been fired because they refused to get vaccinated?

Either way, you’re probably doing more work with fewer people.

You may be in it for the long game. If that is you, this episode speaks to you!

I share 4 ways to benefit from the great resignation

  1. Continue to deliver. It can be easy to drop your productivity to suit the environment that you are in. Continually doing this may inhibit the way you work and it may in fact create a new habit and a new way of working leaving you being potentially less productive.

  2. Continue to learn. That which is in front of you is your teacher. Even learning how not to do things is excellent learning! Learning need not be from a traditional training perspective in this respect; you could learn by observing others, observing the way systems are used and by observing the culture.

  3. Don’t dismiss. It is easy to dismiss others as being not as focused when we you are ready for the next pivot in your career. Often I find with my coachees that they are high achievers. Not everybody is, and there is nothing wrong with that. We are all different with different work and life needs.

  4. Have the conversation. Talk to your manager about your career needs. I find often that this is the step that people feel the most uncomfortable about, which is why I recommend these pointers to guide your conversation.

  5. Discuss your achievements

  6. Discuss your learnings
  7. Ask your manager’s plans for the next quarter
  8. Share your needs: if you want to get involved with projects, stretch assignments etc
  9. Share your career goals: note this can be a tricky one if you have decided to move on. If you are

planning on staying with the organisation, outline where you hope to get to by x months and ask you manager if that is realistic and whether they can support you get there.

I wish you well in your career!

I have supported many organisations with these issues. Do reach out to me if you need help: prina@prinashah.com

This is what I talk to in this episode.

About today’s episode:

5 Problems that Hierarchical Structures Face

  1. Is your leadership pecking order in effect causing your leaders to negatively compete with each other?

  2. Has your organisation got a command-and-control style, like the Milgram experiment? Do people conform without questioning, like a herd of sheep?

  3. Is yours an entitlement culture where people expect the next role to be their god given right?

  4. Has your organisation had cases of corporate fraud which went unseen for a while?

  5. Is your organisation constipated when it comes to decision making?

How can you fit in to a work culture being a migrant woman?

How can workplaces be more open to diverse experiences of their workforce?

Are you ready to move your workplace beyond lip service diversity measures?

About today’s episode:

Today I chat with Sharn Khaira who is the CEO of the Asian Female Entrepreneurs Collective in the UK.

Sharn has a great back story about being a child of migrant parents, how she gave up her corporate career to be her own boss and how she bought her parents a house from her business earnings! She also used to plan big, fat Asian weddings – Bollywood style. Sharn is a go getter with an infectious personality.

I speak with Sharn about: **Breaking Workplace Taboos: For Migrant and Asian Women

We discuss:**

  • Our lived experience in the workplace as a second-generation immigrant (Sharn.)
  • And as a first-generation multiple migrant (Prina.)
  • The common internal barriers that migrant women face.
  • The common external barriers that migrant women face.
  • What workplaces can do to proactively support a migrant workforce – beyond lip service measures.
  • The traditional role of women in Asian cultures - and how that creates a conflict within one’s self when trying to break the mold.
  • Intersectionality within our own Asian cultures!!
  • Traditional views of some Asian men and how Sharn’s clients deal with their setbacks.
  • And listen in to Sharn’s answer to my question: if you had a magic wand, what is one way you would change the workplace?

Subscribe to Prina’s monthly-ish newsletter

About today’s guest: Sharn loves helping female entrepreneurs step into their purpose and she views it as an honour to observe as they discover the best versions of themselves while creating the impact and income they crave. Sharn believes you can build the life you desire because anything is possible. Why? Because she has walked the same path.

HR is an important function, yet still disliked by many…

That is just one (of many) statements I posed to HR Leader, Marija Andacic.

HR practitioners, this one is especially for you!

I ask Marija all the questions that are on the tip of your tongue.

Whether you are a HR veteran or a HR newbie, this episode is going to give you clarity on you, your brand, your career and your network as a HR practitioner.

If you are not in HR, this is a great one to listen to – one of the first pieces of advice I received from a mentor was to have good relationships with Admin and HR people as they hold many keys to the success of your career.

About today’s episode:

Today I chat with Marija Andacic. Marija is a HR Leader with significant experience over many industries. I met her last year and love her style!

I speak with Marija about: The Pleasures and Sorrows of Working in HR.We discuss:

  • HR is an important function in every organisation, yet still disliked by many, why so?
  • Often HR are used for the organisation’s interests vs. the employee’s interests. How can HR practitioners address this issue so they can be the employee advocate too?
  • What to do when you fundamentally disagree with the decision the leader has taken as the HR practitioner.
  • How to establish trust and credibility as a HR practitioner.
  • HR workers tend to put off their own development and working on their professional brand in my experience, what advice would you give to those looking to break the mold?
  • When I worked in HR, I tried my best to be neutral, and be the employee advocate for all – as I think HR should be impartial. Often HR are used for the benefit of the org’s interests vs the employee’s interests – how can one handle this if they are in that situation?
  • We haven’t worked together yet, what is your opinion of working with consultants? Reason I ask if there is often debate going around about using consultants vs HR trying to do it all.
  • How to build and nurture your HR (and beyond) network.
  • Any practical tips you have for up-and-coming HR stars?
  • I ask Marija, what is one way you would change the workplace if you had a magic wand – her answer is fab!

About today’s guest: Marija has significant experience in all things relating to people. She is an energetic and passionate Leader who wants to bring the focus of people back into organisations. She believes that if you don’t focus on your people, your people will not focus on you. She is a game changer, a mentor with WA Police, as well as an active mum of 3 boys and an advisory council treasurer.

This week’s episode is titled: 5 Ways to Communicate to Gain Buy In

One of the recurring issues I have seen with not so great workplace is issues happening because of a lack of communication, mixed communication or just plain poor communication.

  • When people communicate about #change it is dull and generic AF.

  • When people are trying to influence others in the workplace, they find it difficult.
  • When people are trying to improve team or stakeholder engagement, they don’t know how to.

In this episode, I share 5 Modes of Communication that you can apply to help your message stick.

I have been told by many CEOs that they have invested heavily in leadership development and are still not seeing the results. I have supported many CEOs on enhancing their organisational cultures.

These CEOs were not happy with their leaders for some of the reasons I discuss below. There was something amiss. We uncovered there were two factors at play:

  1. The CEOs had not clearly articulated their vision of the culture (and their expectations of leaders.)

  2. The Leaders therefore created their own habits.

I ask CEOs that I work with these Seven Tough Questions to Ask About their Leadership Culture - they will help you determine whether your leadership culture needs a refresh:

1. Do your leaders empower and trust their staff or do they deploy the more directive style where what they say goes?

2. Do your leaders actually get on with each other and work constructively with each other? (A diversity of leaders and a difference of opinions are needed, what I am asking here is do your leaders have a good working relationship with each other?)

3. Do your leaders have the full picture, or are they working in their own patches? In silos?

4. Are your leaders on the same page about the organisation’s strategic direction? Or do they have their own versions of it?

5. Do your leaders share information freely or hold onto it with the mentality that knowledge is power?

6. Do your leaders inspire their teams?

7. Are your leaders emotionally intelligent? Do they have the capacity to be aware of, control, and express their emotions, and can they handle interpersonal relationships judiciously and empathetically?

Fun fact: A study by Deloitte states “More than 80% of the jobs created between now and 2030 will be for knowledge workers, and two-thirds of jobs will be strongly reliant on soft skills.” What are you doing to develop the soft skills of your leaders?

Read the article where I initially wrote about this.

Do you have the best of intentions to time block and get things done, only to FAIL by the end of the week?

You’re not alone!

Many people fail at time blocking for a myriad of reasons, especially when it comes to it at work.

Today I am talking with Ravindra all about Why Time Blocking Fails Leaders on the Ways to Change the Workplace Podcast.

Ravindra offers us a 4-step alternative to time blocking which is sooooo practical. He shows us how to plan for the week, the day and then how we can maintain the focus with less stress!

Ravindra is an expert on time management and productivity. He shares why time blocking tends to fail many in the workplace.

More about Ravindra

My guest today is Ravindra Kondekar, a MTech alumnus of IIT Bombay, who has spent more than 27 years working in the upper echelons of the Indian technology industry.

He has worked in software development for the Department of Space and for many multinational corporations. He has another passion than Software development and that is coaching executives and entrepreneurs on Time Management.

What I really like the sound of is that his time management methodologies are tested through his own career while handling challenging responsibilities and also with his clients of varying needs.

How often is it that workplace culture change is a disaster? We hear more negative stories of change, than we do positive. It need not be the case.

Change can be supported by applying the additional super skill of storytelling!

  • I ask about David’s story: who you are, what you do and why!
  • Storytelling as an important Leadership skill to enlist change and develop the org culture
  • How story telling at work is…
  • a way to build employee engagement,
  • a way to empower change (storytelling through data)
  • a way to build relationships
  • a way to make things stick / make meetings memorable (if we can imagine it in our mind, it sticks better and
  • a way to make things fun!
  • David’s practical tips and takeaways he has in relation to the above
  • And David shares examples of the projects he has worked on
  • And listen in to David’s answer to my question: if you had a magic wand, what is one way you would change the workplace?

About today’s guest: This week I am chatting with David Pullan, he is known as The Story Spotter. He helps his clients do four things:

  • Stand out and be remembered through the stories they spot, shape and share
  • Form deep relationships as they connect to the stories of their stakeholders

You may have had to focus on change management on the fly at times over the past years. As we now focus on recovery, let us not forget the importance of planned change management…

You have probably experienced failed change projects some time in your career.

An ex colleague explained the Japanese concept of Nemawashi to me long ago.

Nemawashi in Japanese means an informal process of quietly laying the foundation for some proposed change or project, by talking to the people concerned, gathering support and feedback, and so forth. It is considered an important element in any major change, before any formal steps are taken, and successful nemawashi enables changes to be carried out with the consent of all sides.

I simplify it to a formula: Meeting Before the Meeting (During and Meeting After the Meeting…)

I have applied this process in many aspects, one of which is in change and culture optimisation projects that I have supported my clients with. Here are some useful pointers from what I have learned. In this episode of Ways to Change the Workplace, I share:

  • What the Nemawashi Process Is Not:
  • What the Nemawashi Process Is:
  • Plus: Bonus Tips on Your Change Engagement

I wish you well in finding Ways to Change Your Workplace!

If Culture eats Strategy for breakfast, I’d say your Values may eat your Vison for brunch.

Values are an integral part of an organisation’s culture. Your Values ideally should be the guiding principles in which everyone in your company behave, serve their customers and achieve your Vision.

The Issue: People either don’t know the company’s values OR don’t like them.

The Potential Reasons:

  • Your staff weren’t included in creation of your Values.
  • Your Values relate to the external facing elements of the company only.
  • Your Values are not in your (the CEO, Leaders and HR Team’s vernacular.) If you’re not living your Values, why should anyone else?
  • Your Values are too wordy or too simple – yes, a dichotomy there.
  • Your Values posters are all over the place but they’re still not being applied.

So, what to do?

8 Ways to Bring Your Company Values to Life: The Success Stories: I have had the pleasure of supporting companies that live, apply and own their Values, and in this episode I share what I have seen work.

Ditch plastering posters of your Values around the place in the hope the message will stick.

  • Live your Values.
  • Apply your Values.
  • Own your Values.

Here’s to happy employees, formidable leaders and good company cultures!

I wish you well in finding Ways to Change Your Workplace!

Menopause is a female leadership issue.

It’s a fact. Did you know:

  • 78% of women in the workplace who are 45-60 years old will face the effects of menopause on their career.
  • By that age, many women are in the peak of their leadership ladder.
  • As more women enter the workplace, this issue is only going to grow.
  • Another fun fact: workplaces which have more females in leadership positions tend to perform better financially.

So why is it that we don’t pay enough attention to this stage of life in the workplace?

About today’s episode:

Today I chat with Thea O’Connor who is a Wellbeing & Productivity Advisor, Presenter, Coach and specialist in helping workplaces to take action in addressing menopause.

I speak with Thea about: Menopause is a Female Leadership Issue. We discuss:

  • Why most HR functions don’t consider menopause.
  • Why we need to change the ways of the workplace to treat menopause like any other significant passage of life such as having children or retiring.
  • The gendered stereotypes women and men have at work.
  • The case for Ways to Change the Workplace address menopause at work.
  • The 9-5 shift and its effect on menopause.
  • The menopause symptoms we don’t know that affect women at work.
  • How YOU as an individual can tackle this in your workplace.
  • How anyone can get rejuvenated in 10 minutes!

About today’s guest: Thea O'Connor who is a Senior Advisor on workplace ell-being, productivity, helping leaders, teams and individuals to improve their workplace engagement and effectiveness through body intelligence and better health. Thea is committed to rehumanizing our work ethic so that it is fashioned around human biological rhythms, rather than around machines. She is a naptivist. Thea promotes the power nap as the new coffee break. Yes. She also promotes life stage approach to worker well-being. So different stages of the lifecycle, such as menopause, can be accommodated.

How to use your positional power for good!

I have spoken to many CEOs and Senior Leaders whom I support about the notion of positional power. Put simply, positional power is the use of your power (of authority) to get things done. This type of power is something you exert over others. It is the use of your authority. Positional power is a preordained source of power given to a person as a result of their position.

Types of positional power:

  1. Your manager can use their positional power to allocate tasks to you

  2. Your coach could use their positional power to hold you accountable to the actions you committed to in your coaching session

  3. It can also be applied in a forced way (dictatorial rulers use their power to ensure their people do as they say)

3 Ways and Tips to Use Your Positional Power for Good.

Here are some points to consider as you lead your organization’s culture.

1. The higher you are in the hierarchy, the further you may be from the grassroots.

2. Now that you are a conductor of the orchestra, you may well feel lonely at the top.

3. A result of the abovementioned points is that you get piecemeal information. You may not always have the full picture. I liken this to the story of “The Emperor’s New Clothes.” A classic tale talking of positional power and the fear the Emperor’s people had of speaking the truth to him. People may not feel they can be completely open with you as a result of your position.

With great responsibility comes great power. How are you using your power?

How can you recover your internal culture and external brand after a workplace scandal?

How can you communicate with impact after losing trust of your people?

How can you find ways to change the workplace culture after bad press?

About today’s episode:

Today I chat with Elaine Bennett all the way in the U.S, in Cape Cod. Elaine is a Strategic Messaging Consultant with years of experience in supporting leaders to communicate the right way.

I speak with Elaine about: How to recover your culture after a workplace scandal.Elaine talks about how she worked at Solomon Brothers during the midst of a fraud scandal.

  • How the new interim CEO, Warren Buffett, turned the internal culture and external brand around.
  • The essence of connecting with people through the framework of communication which Elaine provides.
  • Elaine’s practical tips and takeaways he has in relation to the above
  • And listen in to Elaine’s answer to my question: if you had a magic wand, what is one way you would change the workplace?

About today’s guest: Elaine is a strategic messaging consultant, advising clients from Fortune 50 CEOs to entrepreneurs on their messaging. She also creates and delivers trainings on how to improve the writing of everything from internal communications to speeches. Her 2019 TEDx Talk tackles the topic of how language can change the world. She began her career on Wall Street 25+ years ago, as speechwriter for the CEO of Salomon Brothers. When scandal forced the executive to resign, Warren Buffett stepped in as Interim CEO—and Elaine’s newest client. Mr. Buffett offered Elaine one of his highest compliments: "You have a terrific ear and you turn straight thinking into straight writing.”

What is the best team that you have worked in?

I have a few team related questions for you to consider. We spend more time with our team in the day than we do with our loved ones, it has to be a good team, hey? I have worked in good and bad teams in the past. I got to build my own team culture to suit our team needs. You can too...

  • Why was it so?
  • Who made it so?
  • What behaviours made it so?
  • What were the great ingredients?
  • How could you enhance your current team by adding some of those ingredients and your own new ones?
  • What rituals or traditions did they have? My team had doughnut days, a Friday shared learning session and we also did postmortem learning sessions after projects.

Is your performance cycle one you enjoy, or one which is seen as an imposition from HR?

Is it a good use of your time, or waste?

Is the conversation with your manager an easy one to have, or painful?

If you are feeling your performance planning is a painful experience, fret not, you are not alone!

Today I am talking with Steve McKenna, who is an Associate Professor of Management at Curtin Business School which is based in central Perth, Western Australia.

In this episode of Ways to Change the Workplace, we talk about:

‘Performance Liberation NOT Performance Management’

  • Renaming the performance management process: why?
  • Dangle the carrot less: Detach rewards from evaluations.
  • Strengths development over weakness development. Why?
  • Fairness and subjectivity.
  • Values / Behaviours / Goals / KPIs - which to measure in a meaningful way?
  • The employee experience: Focus on Performance Drivers NOT Performance Management - what are performance drivers?
