Dave Nelson

Presented by Chardon Physical Therapy. This is a show about local entrepreneurs and innovators sharing their stories. Who are the people behind our favorite businesses?

View Details

In this Episode, Dave Nelson sits down with Will Brooks and Jeremy Prokop from Grindstone Jiu Jitsu Training Center, for a conversation that goes deeper than just training. They break down what draws people to jiu jitsu in the first place—and why so many stay. From discipline and resilience to confidence and identity, this episode explores how the grind on the mat translates directly into real life.

They dive into what it takes to build a culture inside a gym, how coaching goes beyond technique, and why accountability is the difference between showing up and actually progressing. You’ll hear how beginners evolve, how setbacks shape growth, and why the right environment can completely change someone’s trajectory.

If you’ve ever felt stuck, lost momentum, or questioned your next step—this conversation connects the dots between physical challenge, mental clarity, and long-term performance.

In this heartfelt episode of Chardon BIZ, Dave Nelson sits down with his brother, Kevin Nelson, for an honest conversation about the journey behind Chardon Performance Therapy.

Dave shares the story of how the business began—from the early vision of creating a better physical therapy experience to the risks, setbacks, and lessons that shaped the company along the way. He reflects on the grind of entrepreneurship, the importance of staying committed during uncertain seasons, and what it took to build trust in the community.

The conversation also explores how the company evolved from a traditional clinic model into what Chardon Performance Therapy is today: a performance-driven practice focused on helping active adults, athletes, and families move better, get stronger, and return confidently to the life they love.

More than a business story, this episode is about family, resilience, and building something meaningful through consistency, care, and a commitment to serving others. It offers listeners a behind-the-scenes look at the mission, mindset, and growth of one of Chardon’s standout local businesses.

On this episode of the Chardon BIZ Podcast, Dave sits down with Kelly Parker from Functional Health Warriors for a deeper conversation around peptides—and what they actually mean for real people trying to take control of their health.

This isn’t a surface-level conversation or a trend-driven take. Most people are stuck in a system where they’re told to “wait and see,” manage symptoms, or guess their way through supplements and recovery. The result? Frustration, lost momentum, and a body that never quite performs the way it should.

Kelly breaks down:

• What peptides are in simple terms—and how they work in the body

• Where they fit (and don’t fit) in a complete health strategy

• The difference between chasing quick fixes vs. building a system that actually moves the needle

• Who should consider peptides—and who shouldn’t

• How peptides connect to bigger drivers like sleep, recovery, inflammation, and metabolic health

This episode ties directly into a bigger idea:

If you’re only looking at one piece of the puzzle—whether it’s training, nutrition, or even peptides—you’re missing the point. Real progress comes from coordination. That’s where the conversation shifts into how performance therapy, functional medicine, and accountability all work together to help people not just feel better—but actually perform at a higher level in their life.

If you’ve been told “everything looks normal” but you still don’t feel like yourself…This episode gives you a clearer path forward.

In this episode of Chardon BIZ, host Dave Nelson sits down with Abbey Blake, from Big Creek Clay, a local clay studio that has become both a creative outlet and a community gathering place in Chardon. The conversation dives into the studio’s origin story—how a passion for pottery evolved into a business model centered on accessibility, creativity, and connection. From offering pottery classes and workshops to supplying materials for both beginners and advanced artists, Big Creek Clay shows how art can be a bridge between individual expression and community spirit.

Listeners will hear how the studio’s founders balance artistry with entrepreneurship, navigating challenges while staying rooted in their mission to foster curiosity and joy in hands-on learning. They share stories of the people who come through their doors—some discovering pottery for the first time, others returning to a long-forgotten passion—and how those experiences ripple outward into the larger Chardon community.

At its heart, this episode reflects how local businesses like Big Creek Clay embody presence and resilience. It’s about more than clay—it’s about shaping spaces where people feel welcomed, supported, and inspired. For business owners, it’s also a reminder that leading with authenticity and creativity can spark growth that extends well beyond the walls of a studio.

Running SLR (Straight leg raise)Runners, our hip flexor muscles are critical to a good run. Strengthening them at this end range can help them to function much better for a proper (aka shorter) stride. Having the strength in your hips to assist with an ideal running gait is critical in injury prevention/recovery.Sitting with your feet out in front of you, lift one leg at a time keeping your knee straight. Repeat as many times as possible while maintaining good form.

*if your hamstrings are super tight or your core is a little weak, you can lean back just a little with your hands to support you.

Your host, Dave Nelson, CEO of Chardon Physical Therapy presents a very special guest, CJ Paterniti. CJ is the owner of D&S automotive located in Chardon and Mentor. He is much more than a business owner so I recommend taking a listen to hear how his success in his business translates to current and future positive community involvement. A key take away as a listener was learning how to continually press forward when some folks try to knock you down by identifying what drives you.
