When Jesus passed by Jericho, only two individuals—Zacchaeus and Bartimaeus—benefited: Zacchaeus received salvation, while Bartimaeus received both his sight and salvation and became a disciple of Jesus. Yet, a crowd followed Him. How is that so?

As it turned out, this was Jesus' last time passing through Jericho because, on this trip to Jerusalem, He was crucified for the salvation of humanity. If anyone thought they would seize their opportunity on Jesus' return, they were mistaken—they had missed it!

Scripture is replete with those who missed opportunities. In this episode, we discuss "Missed Opportunities" for our eternal benefit.

When Jesus opened Bartimaeus’ eyes, He spoke and that was it! It was not the same way He opened the eyes of others. Indeed, Jesus achieved the same results in diverse ways. Unfortunately, many expend their energies trying to figure out how God will meet their needs and end up as nervous wrecks. And when God does what He had promised, it is usually not as they expected. So, “How will God meet your needs?”

When blind Bartimaeus got to where Jesus was, Jesus asked Him what he wanted Him to do for him. This would have been strange to an onlooker. When a blind man cries persistently for mercy what else would you expect him to ask for? Well, the answer is not as straightforward as one may think. In this episode, we explore why God would ask a question like, “What do you want Me to do for you?”

In asking the Jews in Haggai’s time to consider their ways, God pointed to the scarcity they were facing as a yardstick for evaluating whether they were experiencing the consequence of their wrong actions or inactions. In the same way, God is asking us to use our present experience to evaluate whether we are going through the consequence of abandoning our spiritual growth and development. In this regard, God speaks of a famine in the land and your life, noting that a famine can be in the land and not in your life. If, however, you are experiencing a famine in your life, regardless of whether it is in the land, you need to seek God’s face concerning your situation.

God is asking us to consider our ways in the light of our past actions or inactions. One question then is, “Is what is happening to you now related to my actions or inactions in the past?” God is asking us to do a self-examination/appraisal, and this is what we discuss in this podcast.

What did God mean when He said to the Jews in Haggai’s time to answer their ways? God was telling them to consider their ways based on what they had done contrary to His word in their most recent past when they abandoned the house of God. How does this apply to you? Have you considered your ways vis-a-vis the way you have been living?

While Haggai spoke to the prince and the priest, and through them, to the people, Jesus speaks to us today without any such intermediaries. Indeed, Jesus is our prophet, prince, and priest. And whereas Haggai wrote about the historical event that occurred in Judah after the people returned from exile, Jesus is speaking to us, today’s Christians, about spiritual truth that the historical event in Judah foreshadowed.
