Don’t let the tv shows and movies fool you; there’s a big difference in how you take care of yourself in your college days vs. your post-college days. As a matter of fact, let us be the ones to tell you that you should start prioritizing your health in your twenties. Those same late nights you had in college don’t always translate well after you graduate. For example, making sure you’re exercising, eating in a balanced way, and taking care of your mental health in your twenties, can go a long way down the road. In this episode, we’re talking about the reality check of health and wellness and how we’re learning to prioritize our health and self-care.

There are a lot of things we learn in terms of education, but there's not really a manual for preparing to be an adult (whatever that means lol!). If only we would've listened when our parents told us not to spend all of our money or don't hang out with that group or to learn about 401k accounts. Maybe we listened to some things and could've listened better to others. Becoming an adult can be daunting, but having a community and asking the right questions can make it a smoother transition. In this episode we're sharing our experiences with coming into adulthood, things we could've done better and ways we're making it work now.

You've probably heard the quote by Theodore Roosevelt, "comparison is the thief of joy". We all walk through different seasons of life at different times. Our lives won't mimic someone else's. Not comparing ourselves can be easier said than done, especially when you see your peers land jobs before graduation or you see someone reach a goal that you set for yourself. The list goes on and on. Remember that you are where you are for a reason. In this episode, we share our experiences with comparison and provide our advice on how we are learning to combat this struggle.

A lot of times people hear financial aid and they think student loan debt. That can be a part of it, but financial aid and the FAFSA doesn't have to be overwhelming. The important thing with financial aid is to educate yourself on what types of aid are out there. You can be eligible for grants and scholarships (free money!) and loans. Drowning in student loan debt doesn't have to be in your future and financial aid doesn't have to be scary. In this episode, we're joined by Megan Speth, who holds multiple roles, but is sharing her expertise as a Director of Financial Aid. Megan gives great inside on how to make the financial aid process a manageable part of the college enrollment process.

Working in student support roles can bring its highs and lows. There are days when the students we serve are cooperative, understanding and motivated. And there are other days when we have to handle student situations that are challenging. There is no one way to walk through these times. However, we thought it would be helpful to discuss actionable responses that can be used when the session isn't going as planned or is getting out of hand. It takes practice and patience to deal with certain situations, but that's why we all have to guide and support each other. The response guide that we discussed is linked in the show notes, and is a great resource for all student support staff.

Think back...when you got your first credit card or took out a car loan or student loans, did you really understand the terms and conditions? Did you understand the consequences of credit and how to use it wisely? If you answered no, you are absolutely not alone. This lack of understanding was certainly a learning experience, but landed a lot of us in a lot of debt. We always hear that money isn't everything, which is true; but the thought of paying off debt in order to achieve certain goals, can be crippling. With the right support systems, mindset and positive habit changes, financial freedom is attainable. In this episode we are joined by Tyrice Johnson, who shares his journey to paying off over $126,000 in debt in two years, and how intentional changes made a huge impact in his life.
