Hey there. I'm Darlene Michele. Tired of playing small in your life? Me, too. Wanting to live that large, expansive, juicy life you know is waiting for you to step into? Me, too. This podcast is about making that large, juicy life a reality. Know what? We don't have to wait for permission to do that "thing" we've been wanting to do. We ARE enough to do the work we've been uniquely gifted to do. Time to bust through the noise, those disempowering stories that keep us trapped in that teeny weeny life. The choice is ours. Teeny weeny, boring, painful, ineffective life. Or. Big, expansive, exciting, fulfilling life, where we get to share our unique magic with others and make a real difference in real lives. For me, I choose the juicy, mind-blowing life. Come with me. Let's do this together. One courageous step at a time. We got this! Let's go!
In this final episode of The Defying Gravity Podcast, I share some closing reflections. ❤️

Mentioned in the episode:
Elizabeth Gilbert: The Curiosity-Driven Life
In today's Minisode, I discuss this quote by Rainer Maria Rilke:
“Be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves, like locked rooms and like books that are now written in a very foreign tongue. Do not now seek the answers, which cannot be given you because you would not be able to live them. And the point is, to live everything. Live the questions now. Perhaps you will then gradually, without noticing it, live along some distant day into the answer.”
This quote is exactly where I am currently in my life. Maybe, you are also there in your own life. My hope is that today's episode will bring some comfort and support to you. ❤️

In today's episode I share how my current struggle is another lesson about how to persevere. Nothing worth having comes easily. ❤️

In this weeks's Minisode I discuss this quote by Thich Nhat Hanh:
"The meditator breathes in and says, "Hello my fear, my anger, my despair. I will take good care of you."
This quote gives a lovely picture of how we heal our relationship with ourself. This is what I learned to do with myself. Love and accept every part of me. ❤️

Today I'm sharing my own experience with grief and how I'm moving through it. I also share two pieces of comfort and encouragement I found to help me stay focused on what truly matters. ❤️

Today I discuss this quote from Fred Rogers:
"When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, "Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping." To this day, especially in times of "disaster", I remember my mother's words and I am always comforted by realizing that there are still so many helpers - so many caring people in this world."
There's a reason the words of Mr. Rogers make an appearance during times of challenge and tragedy. I discuss this quote in the context of the current global events, and also in our personal lives.
In today's episode I share more of my experience as I sit in the midst of many questions for myself and my future direction in life.
If you are in such a place, too, my hope is that this episode will help you feel that you are not alone. ❤️
Much Love,
Darlene Michele 🦋
In today's Minisode, I share an incredible poem by John Pavlovitz.
"On the day I die, a lot will happen...."
In today's Minisode, I discuss this quote by Martin Luther King Jr.:
"Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. Hate multiplies hate, violence multiplies violence, and toughness implies toughness in a descending spiral of destruction.”
In light of the recent invasion of Ukraine by Russia, this quote is running through my mind. My heart and prayers are with the Ukrainian people. 🇺🇦

But do at last what I came here for
And waste me heart on fear no more."

If you're a woman in your middle years, like me, you've most likely spent decades believing the message that you must sacrifice yourself for everyone else. That everyone else's needs come first. That you should come last.
Here in our middle years, it's time to finally invest in ourself and our dreams. To allow ourself to begin creating the life we REALLY want to live. To recognize our worth and value. That we deserve to come first sometimes.
It's time to take our power back. To put our stake in the ground and declare that we are going to finally do the "thing" we've been wanting to do for yeeeeaaaars!

Is so easy to think when to get to middle-age, that it's too late to create the life we want to live. That's simply BS.
While some people are able to start living their purpose earlier, most of don't get to that place until later. After we've gained some wisdom from decades of life experiences.
Join me as I sit down and have a heart to heart about all this. It's a message I'm passionate about and the whole reason I even started this podcast.

The beginning of a new year is always so exciting for me!
I have all kinds of goals I want to achieve in the coming year.
I'm sure you do , too.
But, in order to get to the finish line with all our goals, there are some important things we need to be aware of.
And, important things we need to put in place to ensure we hit our goals and finish the year strong.
I've dedicated the month of January to sharing some of my tools and techniques to help set you up for success.
I use these in my own life and they work, IF you do the work to apply them.
Today, I focus on the importance of taking 100% responsibility for your life. Every part of it.
This is the first step to creating a powerful year and a beautiful life.
It starts here.

In today's Minisode, I discuss this quote by Robert Louis Stevenson:
"Don't judge each day by the harvest you reap, but by the seeds that you plant."
At the beginning of any new venture, we aren't going to see results right away. The followers, the customers, the fans, will be few and far between.
We have to stay committed to showing up every day and giving our best to what we're creating. Planting lovely seeds of love and care. Patiently tending our garden every day.
The harvest is really not up to us. That's the domain of the Universe.
What is up to us is making sure we plant good quality seeds, and showing up each day to lovingly care for them.
That's all we can do. And, it's enough.

Happy New Year!!!! 🎊 🎉🍾
Here we are at the goal setting time of year, and it's one of my favorite things to do!
I don't set resolutions. They don't work. They are too easily broken. I have a different approach to setting goals.
So, today I'll be sharing how I set my goals for the year and what I put in place to help me stay committed throughout the year.
It's easy to get bogged down in the middle of the year. We lose steam and it's easy to give up and quit.
Heck, some of us quit in the first week!
What can we do to keep us in the game and committed to completing our goals for 2022?
I discuss how we get stopped and what we can do about it in advance, so we have a waaaay better chance of making it to the finish line.

In this week's Lift-Off Minisode, I share this quote by Anne Lamott:
"Oh, my God. What if you wake up some day and you're 65, or 75, and you never got your memoir or novel written; you didn't go swimming in warm pools or oceans all those years because your thighs were jiggly and you had a nice big comfortable tummy; and you were just so strung out on perfectionism and people-pleasing that you forgot to have a big juicy creative life of imagination and radical silliness and staring off into space like when you were a kid? It's going to break your heart. Don't let this happen."
This one really grabs me!
As I get older, it is becoming more important to make sure I use the rest of my remaining days doing those things that delight my soul.

Today is the Winter Solstice. The day with the shortest amount of daylight.
It heralds the official beginning of winter.
In the seasons of life, winter symbolizes death.
Something, I’ve been thinking a lot about as I move through my middle years and as I watch my mother progress through her own winter.
Today's episode focuses on death. Not in a morbid way.
This will be a conversation more about life, then death.
You see, embracing our mortality, helps us to be more intentional about how we live our life.
So, contemplating death and our mortality is really about contemplating life, and living life to the fullest.
Listen to hear what I've learned through lots of time spent contemplating death, especially my own.

We tend to let the painful, broken parts of our lives define us.
We think we have nothing of value to contribute to anyone because we are "damaged".
We've made mistakes. We've made bad choices. We've failed in some areas of life.
But, what if we could see, that the broken pieces of our life, are actually beautiful? That they tell a valuable story that can help someone else.
This what I talk about in this week's episode.

In this week's Minisode, I reflect on this quote by Holocaust survivor, Viktor Frankl:
"What is to give light must endure burning."
Holy moly! It takes a minute to really let that sink in.
And, when it does, the implications are undeniable.
I've seen it in my own life. I bet you have, too.
In order to be of service to any one else, we must first begin with ourself.
Dealing with our own "baggage", "demons", "stuff". Right?
We can't give what we don't have. We can't ask others to be or do, what we aren't willing to be and do ourself.
Suffering is the process that Life uses to help us see what is false and what is real in our life.
To burn away all the "dead weight" that keeps our true essence from shining through.

Happy Thanksgiving week!
Of course, I got to thinking about the many blessings I have!
This week, I share my gratitude for two special people in my life who happen to have birthdays this week.
First my daughter, who was in a serious car accident a couple of weeks ago. This event brought up so many emotions. Emotions of gratitude that she is still here, and emotions from the past. I get vulnerable and share some of my personal story in this episode.
Second, a friend, who I met eight months after I left my marriage. I was so lost and confused! He is the one who set me on the path of personal development and transformation. I wouldn't be where I am in my life today, without this person.
So, as I celebrate all the many things I have to be grateful for, I am especially remembering these two blessings in my life.
What are you grateful for? DM me on Instagram and let me know! @iamdarlenemichele

For today's Lift Off Minisode, I share one of my treasured old friends, this quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson:
"Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders and absurdities no doubt crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day. You shall begin it serenely and with too high a spirit to be encumbered with your old nonsense."
This quote has been a staple in my life for about a decade. It has helped me close out the day with a sense of completion.
Sometimes events in our day may need us to take further action to complete, such as a conflict with a friend that needs to be talked through with that person.
Then we can make sure we have a plan to get that complete.
Most things, though, are just things we encountered during the day that just need to complete and clear with ourself.
This quote helps us make sure that we stay on top of our energy. That we don't allow yucky energy to stick to us and take it with us into the next day.
Grab this quote, put it in a place you will see it each night as you head to bed.
Use it to help you complete the day and release all the "stuff", those absurdities.
Then we can enter the new day, while too high a spirit to be encumbered by that old nonsense.

In this week's Minisode, I talk about how this poem by Mary Oliver, was like water to my thirsty soul and became part of my healing journey.
Wild Geese
You do not have to be good.
You do not have to walk on your knees
For a hundred miles through the desert, repenting. You only have to let the soft animal of your body love what it loves.
Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine. Meanwhile the world goes on.
Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain are moving across the landscapes,
over the prairies and the deep trees,
the mountains and the rivers.
Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air, are heading home again.
Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,
the world offers itself to your imagination,
calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting — over and over announcing your place
in the family of things.
– Mary Oliver

Sometimes things don't unfold just as we would like.
When that happens to me, as it did with this week's episode, I ask myself, "Can I be the space for this?" I
In other words, can I accept what life looks like right now, even though it isn't going the way I would like?
Our ability to accept the moment as it is is key to our growth and expansion. It is also a skill that takes years to master.
And, Life gives us many opportunities daily to practice, as you will hear one such situation for me in this episode.

On today's Weekly Lift Off Minisode, I discuss this POWERFUL quote by Marianne Williamson:
“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, 'Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?' Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”
This quote had such an impact on me. No more playing small.
When we play small, we deprive the world of all that we could bring to it.
The world needs us to step into our full power, to be who we are.
No apologies for our brilliance. It is that brilliance that shifts the planet.
And, as we let our light shine, we give others the permission to do the same.
Come with me. Let's do this together.

Do you have that "thing" you dream of doing? Me, too!
Any new undertaking, any time we are creating anything new, it is like embarking on a new journey.
A journey to uncharted places, where there are no maps to show us the destination. We discover the path as we go.
Creating anything new in the world is the same. We are putting something out into the world that doesn't yet exist.
Journeys also stretch us and cause us to become a bigger, more expansive version of ourselves.
How we take each step along the way, also matters. There is a powerful way to take the journey that will create a more effective and successful outcome.
We discuss all of that in this episode! Take a listen!

“The graveyard is the richest place on earth, because it is here that you will find all the hopes and dreams that were never fulfilled, the books that were never written, the songs that were never sung, the inventions that were never shared, the cures that were never discovered, all because someone was too afraid to take that first step, keep with the problem, or determined to carry our their dream.” Les Brown
