Friends of Vienna is an all-volunteer non-profit formed to support the efforts of the Tree and Beautification Commission in mission and fund-raising endeavors. Through projects and events, they are helping the residents of Vienna develop and care for their community. They are presenting a 4-day Freedom Festival in Vienna. On June 28th and 29th, they will be at the Grand Central Mall, ending with a drone display and fireworks. On July 5th and 6th, they will be at Spencer’s Landing with a rodeo and tethered hot air balloon rides. Tonight, Jack talks all about the fabulous talent and events that will be part of this Celebration of America.

A friend of mine asked me, “What happened? Why are you running for city council?” The answer is simple. I have lived here since 1999, and other than houses burning down or being torn down, there has not been any improvement in our district. In fact, it is steadily declining. Unfortunately, our district has taken a back seat to other districts and doesn’t get the attention it deserves. That’s because we don't have a voice. When you run a business, it’s a common habit for the people running it to put all their efforts into the areas that are easy to manage and ignore the problem areas. This is exactly what happens in city government as well. If given the opportunity, I will spend my time and energy collaborating with city officials to focus on fixing our issues in District 4. You are going to hear that these problems cannot be fixed. You are also going to hear that no one else can do better. You will hear excuses from elected leaders who sit on multiple different outside committees about why things aren’t getting better while being cheered on by people outside our district. This is my promise to you. I will actually be the voice of the people who actually live in our district. I will make noise, and District 4 will be heard! District 4 Deserves More! Restore District 4!

A staunch Conservative and proud January 6 Patriot, Derrick Evans is a lifelong West Virginian. He was born in Huntington, WV, and raised in Wayne County, WV. Derrick received a Bachelor of Arts from West Liberty University, where he earned NCAA First Team All-American honors as a captain of the football team while also being a contributing member of the men's track team. After graduating college, Derrick returned to Wayne County where he began his teaching and football coaching career. After four years in the education system, Derrick stepped away from teaching to pursue his passion for real estate investing and property management. Before politics, Derrick was a conservative and pro-life activist whose passion for ending abortion led to numerous unborn lives being saved. Derrick also helped to secure legal support for the adoption of each child whose mother chose adoption. Derrick was first elected to the West Virginia House of Delegates in 2020, as he became the first Republican to win his District in over 98 years. Tonight’s Spotlight MOV is on Phelps-Tavenner House located at 2401 Camden Avenue in South Parkersburg just off the Depot Street bridge and behind the Fire Department’s training facility. Constructed at the end of the 18th century, this is the oldest home in Wood County, West Virginia, and was continuously used as a private residence from its construction up until 2014, when it was acquired by the Wood County Historical and Preservation Society. Known as the Phelps-Tavenner House, the building has played important roles in the area’s rich history and stands today as a nod to the events, families, and traditions of its time. Tonight’s Spotlight MOV is on The Blennerhassett Hotel and Spa in downtown Parkersburg at the corner of 4th and Market streets. We want to thank their Digital Marketing Manager, Travis Stephens, for meeting us and giving us an extended tour of their beautiful building.HistoryThe Historic Blennerhassett Hotel was built and constructed by Colonel William Nelson Chancellor. Construction on the original part of the hotel began in 1883, and after six years of construction, the doors were officially opened to the world on Monday, May 6, 1889. Chancellor wanted a hotel grand for its time, and second to no other hotel in the state of West Virginia, which the Blennerhassett was. The Blennerhassett was built for the millionaires of the day.In the 1880s, Parkersburg was in the middle of the oil and gas boom era, and Chancellor wanted his hotel to reflect the wealth of the day. The city of Parkersburg first received electricity in 1888 for the streetlights on the main streets in the town. It was electricity that was generated by natural gas. The hotel had both gas and electricity at the time that it opened. Local Parkersburg companies wired the hotel for electricity, plumbed it, and fitted it throughout with gas lighting, and steam heating.The first proprietor to lease the new hotel from Chancellor and run and operate it was a man by the name of George C. Campbell. He was given the task, before the hotel was to be opened, to name Chancellor’s new hotel. He decided that it was going to be called the “Hotel Argyle”, not sure what significance this name had, but he eventually decided on “The Hotel Blennerhassett”. The name derived from Harmon Blennerhassett, an Irish aristocrat who settled on an island in the Ohio River a few miles from Parkersburg with his family in the late eighteenth century. Blennerhassett Island shares his namesake and is now a West Virginia State Park.The Bentley and Gerwig furniture company helped to furnish the hotel with some of its new furnishings before its new grand opening. Chancellor had two different companies from Cincinnati, Ohio come in and do all of the original window treatments throughout the hotel, as well as all of the frescoing works, which would have been seen in different parts of the lobby area, as well as in the restaurant. There was an electric elevator, as well as an electric service elevator, that were located in the hotel at the time of its opening, something new for the day.Blennerhassett Circa 1900The restaurant was located on the second floor and could seat up to 80 guests at one time. The kitchen was located on the fifth floor of the new hotel. This was done in case a fire in the kitchen were to start, it would start on the top of the building and work its way down. This was a common safety precaution for the day. The common area was located on the second floor and had two double parlors, with one housing an upright piano. The grand mirror in the lobby had a wire cage built around it, to protect it from stray bullets that could possibly have come through the windows due to unruly crowds and people on the street. There was a central staircase in the lobby which led up five stories. There were public bathrooms on every floor, and bathrooms in all of the 50 new guest rooms.

In this episode, Rick and Bob discuss vandalism that is occurring in the area, especially in Parkersburg. Their new segment, “Spotlight On,” focuses on Mary B’s Diner.
Bob and Rick, along with Mrs. Bob (Amanda), plus daughter Jessica and granddaughter Aubrey, spent last evening hosting trunks at the annual Trunk or Treat event at the Humane Society of Parkersburg. The video podcast contained a few videos which would make no sense at all in an audio-only format, so they have been edited out.
Our planned guest this evening was Teresa Racer, better known in the community as “Momma T.” She was unable to get her smartphone to cooperate and connect her to our studio feed, so we will absolutely have her back on as soon as we can figure out why she was unable to connect. “Momma T” leads a street ministry in one of the poorest neighborhoods in Parkersburg. Every week numerous trucks pull up to Lynn Street filled with tables to erect, hot home-cooked food, and bags of clothes to distribute. Volunteers wearing purple “Momma T and the Warriors” sweatshirts set up warming plates, lay out clothing and blankets, and look for directions from a smiling lady the locals call Momma T. As of 2018, the ministry was feeding around 350 people per week. Donations for the food, which cost around $800 weekly, come from many sources, including passersby who stop at the site to contribute. Teresa and a few helpers cook the food at their homes, then truck-driving volunteers transport the meals and clothing donations.

Our guest this week is Roger Conley, Delegate for West Virginia House District 10. He discusses a number of issues that are before a current special session of the state legislature and summarizes three proposed amendments to the state constitution that will be placed before the people in the November elections.

Tonight's special guests are Chief Mike Pifer of Vienna (WV) Police Department and Chief Shawn Graham of Williamstown (WV) Police Department. The topic of discussion is the state of policing in their two communities, their successes, and their challenges. One issue that has come up each time we have spoken with law enforcement is the challenge of recruiting, training, and retaining qualified, professional officers. Both men also expressed strong interest in the Parkersburg and Wood County Neighborhood Watch Co-op helping them establish Neighborhood Watch in their communities.
Tonight's guest is Lisa Doyle-Parsons, Director of the Circles® Campaign of the Mid-Ohio Valley, Inc., a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. They are a community-based initiative that assists families in poverty to achieve their goal of self-sufficiency through education and supportive friendships with mentors, or “Allies”. True to their mission, They "build circles of support that strengthen our community by inspiring and equipping families in their effort to transition out of poverty." Their local initiative uses a national model developed by Move the Mountain Leadership Campaign. The Circles model started in 2000 as a way to increase the capacity of communities to address poverty. The approach combines best practices in several disciplines including community organizing, coaching, grassroots leadership, SMART goal setting, financial literacy, mentoring, peer-to-peer counseling and learning, and child/youth development. On Monday, August 8, at 5:30 pm at St Joseph's landing (the old St Joe hospital) they're hosting an open-to-the-public meeting on recognizing and talking to someone about suicide.
This evening’s guest is Jason Bailey, MBA, Director of Rehabilitation Services at SW Resources, located at 1024 7th Street, Parkersburg, West Virginia. SW Resources was founded in 1964 by an organization now known as The Arc and the Junior League of Parkersburg, West Virginia. From a modest beginning in a converted storefront building, and growing through several rocky and unsuccessful years, SW Resources now occupies three buildings, including an 18,000-square-foot warehouse. Through the years, the organization grew thanks to their commitment to quality services, the help and tremendous support of their volunteers, the generosity of our local community, and the dedication of both their talented staff and client employees.
Our guest this evening is a regional icon, long-time radio personality, and our friend, Mr. Douglas (Doug) Hess, Jr., COO of the Arc of the Mid-Ohio Valley. Since 1955, The Arc of the Mid Ohio Valley has been dedicated to ensuring a satisfying and productive life for children and adults with intellectual, cognitive, and related developmental disabilities by providing programs and services that enable, empower, and encourage them to live, learn, work, worship, and play in their community … along with their peers and neighbors! This evening Doug discusses a few of the many programs the Arc provides here in our region.
Our guest this evening is Aaron Fleenor, Public Information Officer and Administrative Assistant for the Wood/Wirt County (WV) 911 Center. Aaron says that the most important take-away from his interview is “National Number, Local Service.” That means that although 911 is the national emergency number, dispatchers cannot dispatch responders out of their own area. If you live in Parkersburg and you’re talking with your grandmother in Cleveland, and she says she needs an ambulance, you must contact the dispatch center in Cleveland to get help to her. The local dispatchers can do nothing to help you. To schedule a tour of the 911 Center, call the Communications Coordinator, Bill Riffle, at the business office.

WCEC is an all-volunteer non-profit Amateur Radio organization, created to provide backup and overload communications to all Public Safety agencies in Wood County, West Virginia, and the surrounding counties in West Virginia and Ohio. This evening we had planned to have as our guest the Public Information Officer from the Wood/Wirt County 911 Center, Aaron Fleenor. We were plagued with technical difficulties from “Action!” to “Cut!” and Aaron was unable to connect to our studio. During this week we will do our very best to identify and correct those technical problems, and we will reschedule Aaron very soon.

May 15 was national Peace Officers’ Memorial Day, honoring all Peace Officers killed in the Line of Duty. There were 617 human officers and 21 K9 officers killed in the Line of Duty in 2021. This evening we concentrate on a special tribute to our mothers and the other significant women in our lives.
Our guest this evening is Cindy Ware, President of the Parkersburg and Wood County Neighborhood Watch. In this episode, we discuss the Neighborhood Watch in our city and county and its relationship to local law enforcement. We also talk about the makeup and some of the activities of the Watch and how area residents may become involved in the program.
