Episode 51 of The Manic Metallic Podcast is a marathon interview with BB Babes founder Mindy Solkin. We discuss too much to mention in a description, but some of our topics were:

  • Mindy’s Northeast Philadelphia childhood, and how it influenced her desire to work in fashion
  • Whether online stores’ continued dominance correlate with a loss of respect for fashion
  • How engaging in creative hobbies could foster a genuine enjoyment of fashion
  • How fashion will always have an element of selfishness and why that is
  • A post-mortem of the Philadelphia Center City Macy’s debacle — and problems with Macy’s as a whole
  • Mindy’s new venture, BB Babes, and how she’s looking to connect with her fellow Baby Boomer women
  • Her thoughts on the style of Gen Z
  • And a lot more!

BB Babes https://bbbabes.net/

Mindy’s Bio:Mindy Solkin has four key passions: Fashion, Fitness, Entrepreneurship, and Giving Back. She holds a degree in fashion design from Drexel University, which led her to design apparel for various garment manufacturers. This included managing a design department at a major bridal manufacturer for four years, culminating in the creation of her own business focused on designing formal dresses.

Born and raised in Philadelphia, a trip to a running camp in Vermont profoundly influenced her life. Having been a runner since 1978, and with the fitness trend gaining momentum in the early 1990s, she relocated to New York City and founded The Running Center in Manhattan, a specialty training studio for runners.

Over a span of 25 years, she coached thousands of individuals to achieve their dream of running a marathon, while personally completing six marathons and earning age-group awards in distances ranging from 5K to half-marathon.

In 2016, Mindy returned to her hometown and re-ignited her fashion career, serving as the personal stylist at Macy's in Center City Philadelphia for five years.

But her entrepreneurial spirit remained strong, and with nearly five decades of creative work and business experience, she launched BB Babes, The Fashion, Fitness, and Health Network for Baby Boomer Women. BB Babes pays tribute to women born between 1946 and 1964 who are still gainfully employed, or own businesses, or have retired but continue to engage in various pursuits whether business-oriented or civic-minded.

Mindy aims to share her knowledge, experiences, and lifelong interests in fashion, fitness, and health with women of her generation through BB Babes. Because to Mindy, nothing beats the feeling of making a positive impact on someone’s life.

Episode 50 of The Manic Metallic Podcast sees us interviewing Guzangs founder Idelle Taye, a rising star in the fashion space and a passionate advocate for the African fashion scene.

In this episode, we discuss a wide variety of topics, including:

  • The Guzangs mission, and how Idelle came up with the idea for the company
  • Misconceptions that Westerners have about the African fashion scene
  • The challenges of entering the industry for people without a fashion background and that, consequently, have zero connections — and advice for those in this situation
  • The company's recent partnership with Marist University on a very successful fashion exhibition
  • How sustainability is baked into the African way of life and, therefore, into African fashion
  • And so much more!

IDELLE’S BIOIdelle Taye is the founder and style director at GUZANGS. Guzangs is considered to be the "Vogue/BOF of Africa,” tirelessly championing African fashion and design and art in unprecedented ways. Idelle is a trailblazer in discovering and celebrating talent from the African continent on a global platform.

Across fields, biennials, fairs, and fashion weeks, there is a clear and growing sense that we are entering into an era that is Africa’s time – and Idelle has been a foundational part of growing, developing, supporting, and promoting the talents making that happen. She recently produced the 'Alternative Realities' fashion exhibitions in the U.S., spotlighting over 200 works from 14 designers across Africa –including Lagos Space Programme and Nkwo –to capture the energy, culture, and unique purview of African designers.

As Guzangs continues to grow, it’s followed by notable figures including Alicia Keys, Channing Tatum, Ava DuVernay, and Stefano Pilati, emphasizing the breadth and scope of its influence. It's also a testament to how this amazing content and stories from the continent are resonating with such a diverse audience, including Hollywood.

Idelle is deeply immersed in the continent’s fashion ecosystem and champions its role in global culture and sustainable fashion.

Welcome to Season 4 of The Manic Metallic Podcast!

We're kicking off the season by doing a last word on New York Fashion Week's SS24 collections (and we will try to do the same for London, Milan, and Paris, time-dependent, of course).

We've broken down the shows into five categories:

  • Initial Thoughts (shows that, for better or worse, we wanted to elaborate on a bit more)
  • Perennially Chic (shows by brands/designers that are, well, perennially chic)
  • Collections That Were Nice, But Not Groundbreaking (self-explanatory)
  • Honorable Mentions (shows that were fine, but I didn't feel compelled to elaborate further on them)
  • Keep An Eye On (Design brands that are young/youngish and that have a bright future in the industry)

We elaborate where necessary and we don't when we don't feel that it is warranted.

If we get to have this format of episode for the fashion weeks in the other three cities mentioned above, this same format will hold true.

What did you think about NYFW this past season? DM us at Manic Metallic, and let's talk!

JEN’S BIO:

As a chief merchant and seasoned e-Commerce expert specializing in luxury fashion, Jen Sidary has led and implemented partnerships between brands and established retailers from around the world, with a career spanning more than three decades.

As an industry veteran and spending much of her time in Ukraine since the end of 2020, Sidary founded ANGELFORFASHION.com in April 2022 a multi-brand fashion eCommerce website to support Ukrainian designers and their companies survive the war. With the mission of nurturing the fashion industry there she also worked across several ambitious projects with USAID Competitive Economy Program as a fashion industry expert showcasing Ukrainian brands at New York and Paris Fashion Weeks.

In 2017, following her role as the President of Sales at Vivienne Westwood America, Sidary founded Ms. Luxe Link, a fashion-consulting agency. As the Chief Executive Officer and Founder for her agency and Angel for Fashion, she mentors emerging and established fashion companies by providing insights into retail trends and refocuses brand KPIs.

Her career first escalated when she became the Head of Zappos Couture in 2009, now an Amazon subsidiary. In this role, Sidary directed marketing, site redesign and supervised all product categories ranging across RTW, accessories, jewelry, and beauty. Under her direction, sales increased from $15 million to $100 million in her seven-year tenure.

Other achievements include the launch of a strategic alliance for Zappos Couture with the late André Leon Talley, the former Creative Director, and Editor-at-Large of Vogue magazine.

Born and raised in Kansas City, Missouri, Sidary moved to Los Angeles to attend FIDM and later returned to Kansas City where she then began her career as a retail buyer for Halls’ department stores.

In the second episode of Season 3, we talk to one of my favorite Gen. Z people today - Tina Dimkovska, better known as @theotherlagerfeld on her popular Instagram account.

Our conversation is broad; some of our chosen topics include:

  • How she feels about many of the most prominent online fashion commentators being male
  • How the late Vivienne Westwood inspired her to begin writing her fashion critiques
  • The current state of omnipresent fashion houses Gucci and Dior
  • How she has become a part of the Skopje fashion scene
  • And more!

TINA'S BIO:

Tina is a Gen. Z fashion critic from Macedonia that uses her Instagram account to write in-depth critiques that center around reviewing both current and past fashion collections and reviewing individual iconic looks. You can count on her assessments to be honest, but never unnecessarily vicious.

At Manic Metallic, we believe that fashion is an art, discipline, and societal force for change. I (Liberty), your host, have been pondering recently how Manic Metallic can help others in a more direct and tangible way.

In other words, how can Manic Metallic use fashion as a force for societal change aside from being part of the fashion discourse with our unique voice (which is very important in its own right)?

Listen to this episode to see what we've got in mind to help both those that currently own a fashion company and those hoping to own one.

This week, we're piloting a new structure for the podcast where our typical three podcast episodes per week are wrapped into the same weekly episode. We’d have three separate segments of the show, with our usual topics represented.

The first segment would cover the three things that we’re excited or curious about this week, the second segment would cover whatever present-focused topic that I want to discuss (whether that be our current article, a news story, etc.), and the third segment would be our popular “Who Is….?” series.

This week, we're excited/curious about these three things:

  • Sarabande Foundation's upcoming showroom in Paris
  • The photo app BeReal
  • The Pinterest app Shuffles

We're going to be discussing Manic Metallic's latest article, “How Did We Get To The Point Of Naming Every Fashion Trend ‘-Core’?”.

And for our "Who Is....?" segment, we're going to be discussing fashion designer Byron Lars.

Let us know what you think of the new format!

Today is the first installment of our Thursday series "What Was....?".

This series will elevate the stories of past places and events that have been important to the fashion story since the industry began. This includes topics such as shopping locations, awards shows, geographic locations, runway shows, exhibits, leisure spots, and so on. We will explain why each topic was relevant to the fashion industry in the past, and why it is important to remember its influence on fashion today.

Our first "What Was....?" feature is more accurately a "What Were....?". We are discussing the Coty Awards.

We look at the awards show's history and what led to its demise.
