A podcast about the logical, ethical, and emotional flaws in Christianity for Exvangelicals, current believers, and anyone in between.
In this episode, Phil and Susie catch up and discuss the US election results and what went wrong for Democrats, how religious beliefs are correlated with being susceptible to disinformation, Project 2025, how we both felt upon learning the results, and how we move forward over the next 4 years.
The main part of the episode is Susie's conversation with our favorite expert on everything, Lars and his family. She got the chance to sit down with them at her home over the summer on their way back from picking up their kids from camp, and they have a very interesting conversation, with a special focus on how their family is adjusting to the recent revelation that their son, Alex was trans. They talk a bit about how their still Xtian parents have responded to that revelation and how they responded to Lars and Christie's deconversion, along with some other family member's responses. It's a fascinating and engaging conversation with Lars, Christie, and Alex along with special appearance from Susie's daughter, Audrey, who talks about her perceptions about what she thinks about trans questions and her views on therapy. The conversation concludes with a conversation with a few of the kids about their lives in a non-religious family, and it's truly refreshing! It's a wide ranging conversation that covers a wide variety of subjects. We hope you enjoy. In this episode, Phil and Susie talk with Laura, a nurse, originally from WV who now lives in CA with her husband, 3 cats and a special needs stepson. She has taken a circuitous journey from Catholic, Presbyterian, Methodist, and Southern Baptist to eventual agnostic, humanistic atheism.
She has a Bachelor’s in Marketing from Johnson & Wales University in Providence and did advertising stuff for a few years. She switched gears after her mom’s death and went to nursing school. She has Associates and Master's Degrees in Nursing. She current works in an ICU step down unit in Pasadena. She enjoys reading, hiking, triathaloning (poorly and slowly), traveling, Braves baseball, Steelers and WVU Mountaineer football, cats, and craft beer. She is a published author and is adopted. In this episode, Phil and Susie explore the topic of prophecy. We discuss what prophecy is, what criteria something needs to meet in order to be considered "fulfilled" prophecy, examples of "fulfilled" prophecy from the bible and determining if they meet the criteria, modern false prophets, and how the gift of prophecy has changed over the centuries. Be warned, there is a lot of bible in this episode and we compare the biblical text to historical data to help us determine if the bible really does have fulfilled prophecy. In this episode, airing on Mother's Day (which we didn't realize at the time of recording), Phil and Suzie chat with Diane, who is a long-time Virginia resident, a mom to a brilliant nearly-25-year-old, and completely owned by a big, goofy black lab and two cats – one perfect angel and one complete ass. She adores them all. She also loves to swim, write, and travel, and she’s fascinated by architecture, especially old churches. Some have said that’s God reaching out to her, but that just makes her snort. An agnostic atheist since her late teens (but a doubter since childhood), she was indoctrinated and raised in the Methodist church. She enjoys hearing about others’ spiritual journeys, even when she doesn’t understand them.
We have a fascinating conversation about her upbringing, her transition from indoctrination to atheism, and the freedom, hope, and joy that she has found outside of religion and faith. Diane is the ultimate example of what many people strive for while deconstructing, namely the desire to be free, be herself, and connect with people on her own terms.

In this episode, Phil and Suzie talk with Helen Greene, Ambassador and Fundraising Coordinator for Recovering from Religion. In this wide-ranging conversation, Helen talks with us about her interesting journey away from faith from her Catholic upbringing, discovery of paganism, and eventual deconstruction to skepticism and atheism.
Helen comes from a diverse background of beliefs. Raised Roman Catholic, then rejecting the church to move into paganism, she was a pagan high priestess for 10 years during her time in that faith (which was 13 years). Eventually realizing through education and skeptical inquiry into herself, she came to the conclusion she had no solid evidence for her beliefs – which brought her to a more humanistic and realistic worldview. Still studying psychology even out of college, she spends her time trying to understand human behavior, the emotional and psychological understandings of ourselves, and what forms our perspectives and why. She is an ambassador for Recovering from Religion, head of their fundraising team, and one of the co-hosts of their Monday night podcast RfRx. She also volunteers at the Atheist Community of Austin, a rotating co-host of the podcast the Non Prophets, hosts a TikTok live The Queerly Godless Feminist via the ACA,and one Women Atheist Unload and Global Atheists at the Skeptic Haven YouTube channel. For fun, she enjoys horror (esp cosmic horror) and sci-fi movies, video gaming, and diving deep into made-up world-building stories such as the Lord of the Rings.

As deconstruction and deconversion are becoming more prevalent in our world, the institutions of Xtianity are flailing to craft a response that will attempt to stem the tide of people leaving the faith, the church, and god himself. The “explanations” of why people are leaving, of course, they are not based in reality or facts, because most have never spoken with anyone who’s actually left to find out their real reasons. In this episode, Phil and Suzie debunk many of these common “myths” that the church attempts to sell as the real reasons for deconstruction.

Stacie Grahn was raised in a charismatic born-again Christian environment. In 2019, she began questioning her beliefs, which eventually led her to embrace atheism by 2021. - 30:11: My question is how to cope with stress after leaving religion? A lot of people pray when things are going bad because they feel that faith will relieve stress. I think it would be good if you shared strategies for dealing with emotions like fear and anxiety without religion.

- 59.16: Why are women "second class" and why do they accept that? The whole serve your master, obey your husband is swallowed by so many SMART women. Religion is just so highly macho and being told from birth that you are there to serve must be so hard to recover from. For those who managed to escape, when was the seed planted that women are people too and what was the last straw that allowed them to get out?
- 1:09: Given that evidence suggests humans have no soul and therefore no free will, how should we change the way we treat others or hold them responsible for the harm they do?

In this episode, Phil and Susie attempt to tackle a really broad subject, the historical Jesus. We want to be clear that we are not biblical scholars and that there is no way in the course of this episode that we are going to provide definitive answers to the questions we will be asking today. Biblical scholars have dedicated their whole lives to this topic and we hope to spark your interest in the topic, just as we have been fascinated by it. In this episode, Phil and Susie "dig" into the power of music. Harlan Howard in the 50’s used the phrase “3 chords and the truth” to describe his genre of country music and many other artists have used this phrase and allowed it to be their philosophy of songwriting. This phrase is funny because most worship songs are 3 chords and purports to be truth, but what is the truth that is actually being conveyed? How does music actually work to affect our emotions and how is this exploited in worship/Xtian music and sold as the “Spirit”? Can “secular” music do the same thing that Xtian music does? We will talk (and even sing) about some of the tactics that are used and even how chord structures and musical formulas can elicit certain responses.

One of the most challenging aspects of deconversion for many of us was the decision to reveal our leaving the faith to our family and close friends and making it public, etc. Since many of us come from Xtian households and have still believing parents, there can be some serious anxiety around the decision to tell our parents that we can’t believe what they brought us up to believe.

In today's episode, Phil and Susie delve into some of the early childhood objections that Susie had to Christianity. We will discuss the objections, how Christians might respond to these objections, and how we view these objections now as adults who've left the faith. Asking these questions and exploring these objections would be viewed a heresy in our previous lives, so we named this episode "The One with the Heretical Objections" to poke the idea of heresy in the eye a bit, since the real heresy is Christianity.
